Abstract:In order to explore the possible impact of nutrient decrease on microplankton community under high eutrophication stress, rotifer, protozoa and algae samples were collected during a nutrient control from July to August, 2008 in Taihu Lake in China, and examined by both species and phylogenetic patterns. A total of 10 rotifer, 40 protozoal and 24 algal taxa were detected before the nutrient control in July, 2008. After the nutrient control (August, 2008), a total of 23, 16 and 9 taxa were detected for rotifer, protozoa and algae, respectively. By comparing samples to those before the control, the average Shannon-Wiener indexes, Simpson indexes and Pielou evenness indexes increased 197%, 101% and 73%, respectively. The average phylogenetic species variability (PSV) and phylogenetic species evenness (PSE) decreased 63% and 1%, respectively. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of interactions between environmental variables and microplankton communities indicated that most of the microplankton species found in August were negatively correlated with nutrient level (e.g. total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and orthophosphate), with both species and phylogenetic patterns. This study showed that the lower diversity and closer species relatedness of microplankton under high eutrophication stress could get mended when the nutrient got down. In addition, the results revealed that phylogenetic diversity patterns could effectively help community research when predicting community and species responses to disturbance.
Impact of Effective Microorganisms and Chlorella vulgaris on Eriocheir sinensis and Water Microbiota in Ponds Experiencing Cyanobacterial Blooms

Abstract:Cyanobacterial blooms threaten the quality and safety of the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis. A combination of microalgae and probiotics seems a promising way to prevent and control cyanobacterial blooms in aquaculture ponds. In E. sinensis cultivation, however, a related strategy is still lacking. To assess the potential combined effects of effective microorganisms (EM) and Chlorella vulgaris on regulating cyanobacterial blooms, in this study, we detected the alterations in the physiology of E. sinensis, as well as water quality and microbial compositions of E. sinensis culture ponds with cyanobacterial blooms. As a result, supplementary EM and C. vulgaris had no adverse effects on the growth or digestive or antioxidant ability of E. sinensis but improved the water quality of the pond by reducing total ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen levels. We found an increase in bacterial diversity and evenness, while a decrease in the diversity of fungal and phytoplankton communities was related to supplementary EM and C. vulgaris. Interestingly, EM coupling C. vulgaris promoted the restoration of the bacterial and fungal community composition in cyanobacterial blooms ponds, particularly the increase of Mychonastes abundance and the decrease of Cyclotella. This study laid the foundation for the prevention and control of potential risks in aquaculture.

Response of Freshwater Algae to Water Quality in Qinshan Lake Within Taihu Watershed, China

Abstract:Although frequent algal blooms in Taihu Lake in China have become major environmental problems and have drawn national and international attention, little is understood about the relationship between algal blooms and water quality. The goal of this study was to assess the growth and species responses of freshwater algae to variation in water quality in Qinshan Lake, located in headwaters of the Taihu watershed. Water samples were collected monthly from ten study sites in the Qinshan Lake and were analyzed for species distribution of freshwater algae and physiochemical parameters such as total nitrogen (TN), NH4+–N, NO3-–N, total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) and Chl-a. The results showed that average TN was 4.47mg/L, with 92.2% of values greater than the TN standard set by the Chinese Environmental Protection Agency; average TP was 0.051mg/L, with 37.9% of values above the TP national standard; and average trophic level index (TLI) was 53, the lower end of eutrophic condition. Average Chl-a concentration was 12.83mg/m3. Green algae and diatom far outweighed other freshwater algae and were dominant most time of the year, with the highest relative abundances of 96% and 99%, respectively. Blue-green algae, composed mainly toxic strains like Microcystis sp., Nostoc sp. and Oscillatoria sp., became most dominant in the summer with the maximum relative abundance of 69%. The blue-green algae sank to the lake bottom to overwinter, and then dinoflagellates became the dominant species in the winter, with highest relative abundance of 89%. Analysis indicated that nutrients, especially control of ammonia and co-varying nutrients were the major restrictive factor of population growth of blue-green algae, suggesting that control in nutrient enrichments is the major preventive measure of algal blooms in Qinshan Lake.

Abstract:Allelochemicals have been shown to inhibit cyanobacterial blooms for several years. In view of the disadvantages of "direct-added" mode, natural and pollution-free tea polyphenolic allelochemicals with good inhibitory effect on cyanobacteria were selected to prepare sustained-release particles by microcapsule technology. Results showed that the encapsulation efficiency of tea polyphenols sustained-release particles (TPSPs) was 50.6% and the particle size ranged from 700 to 970 nm, which reached the nanoscale under optimum preparation condition. Physical and chemical properties of TPSPs were characterized to prove that tea polyphenols were well encapsulated and the particles had good thermal stability. The optimal dosage of TPSPs was determined to be 0.3 g/L, at which the inhibition rate on Microcystis aeruginosa in logarithmic growth period could be maintained above 95%. Simultaneous decrease in algal density and chlorophyll-a content indicated that the photosynthesis of algal cells was affected leading to cell death. Significant changes of antioxidant enzyme activities suggested that Microcystis aeruginosa 's antioxidant systems had been disrupted. Furthermore, TPSPs increased the concentration of O 2− which led to lipid peroxidation of cell membrane and a subsequent increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Meanwhile, the protein content, nucleic acid content, and electrical conductivity in culture medium rose significantly indicating the cell membrane was irreversibly damaged. This work can provide a basis for the utilization of environmentally friendly algal suppressants.

Algal bloom investigation and control evaluation through algaecides in recreational water bodies supplemented by reclaimed water

Abstract:Combined site investigation and laboratory test,the algal bloom and its dominant alga species were analyzed in recreational or ornamental water use that the makeup water is from reclaimed water.Conducting two year site investigation,the results showed that the recreational or ornamental pond break out algal bloom easily when the favorable conditions are available such as light,temperature and nutrient,etc,and the dominant alga is Chlorella vugaris.For further verifying the results in site investigation,the competitive growth test was made between Chlorella vugaris and Microcystis aeruginosa through the algal growth potential under different TN and TP concentrations that coined with the scope of reclaimed water effluent.The lab test showed that the propagation speed of Chlorella vugaris was faster than Microcystis aeruginosa's,which is same as the results in site investigation.To inhibit algal bloom with dominant Chlorella vugaris,four different chemical algaecides were selected,i.e.S1,S2,S3 and S4.The inhibiting abilities of the four algaecides were evaluated in the initial algal bloom outbreak(algal density: 107 cells/L or so) and after algal bloom outbreak(algal density: 109 cells/L or so).It is found that the four algaecides all had a certain inhibition on algal bloom with different dosage levels.After acute toxicity tests of four algaecides,S2 showed better inhibiting algal bloom in initial algal bloom outbreak with safe level.
Study on the Algae Lysis Method of White Rot Fungi Algae Control System

Abstract:At present, there are few studies on known bacterial species and even less on fungi in biological algae control technology. In this paper, the green eutrophic shallow water lake Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turpin) was used as the research object, and white rot fungi, which has a high removal effect on water pollutants, algae and biological toxins, was used for algae control. The extent of the removal effect, physiological characteristics and the internal functional groups of the algae cells in the white rot fungi solution, the supernatant of the white rot fungi solution after centrifugation and the sterilized white rot fungi solution were investigated. The results showed that the best algae solubilization effect of the algae control system was achieved at 250 mg/L, with 8 mg/L of dissolved oxygen and a hydraulic retention time of 48 h. The average algae lysis rate was 85.48%, the average dehydrogenase activity reduction rate was 59.23%, the average soluble protein reduction rate was 65.16% and the average malondialdehyde content increased to 0.128 umol/L. After treatment with the white rot algae control system, the spatial structure of the Turpin cells was severely disrupted, and significant lysis occurred within the algal cells, forcing the release of intracellularly soluble substances, and reducing the dehydrogenase activity of the Turpin cells, thus inhibiting the growth activity of the algae cells. A further reduction in the soluble protein content reduces the nutrients required for the growth of Turpin, exacerbating the rate of reduction in the physiological metabolic activity of the Turpin cells and, ultimately, the inhibition or killing of the algal cells. The results of this research may provide theoretical guidance for the microbial control of water eutrophication; however, whether there will be secondary pollution after the algae dissolution of this process is worthy of further study.

Abstract:This paper introduces three successful engineering cases of algal bloom control in lakes and reservoirs conducted by a research group from Fudan University based on the theory of biomanipulation. The related knowledge and technological innovations, involving the concept of the inner-outer symbiosis pollution source and its amplifying effects, the significance of algal bloom control to treatment of eutrophic water in lakes and reservoirs, the synergies of the traditional and non-traditional biomanipulation technologies, the effects of sustainable bio-control of algae beginning from winter on the algal bloom control of eutrophic lakes and reservoirs, the suitable modes of stocking algivores, and control of the secondary pollution from manure of filter-feeding fish, are described.
Multiple Effects of Environmental Factors on Algal Growth and Nutrient Thresholds for Harmful Algal Blooms: Application of Response Surface Methodology

Abstract:Systematic understanding of the co-effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton proliferation can enable more effective control of harmful algal blooms in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs. A batch of statistically designed experiments using response surface methodology was recently conducted on mixed algae samples collected from Changtan Reservoir. The central composite designed response surface model was established to evaluate multiple effects of various physical and chemical factors (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, temperature, and light intensity) on algal density and chlorophyll a content. Analysis of variance indicated an excellent correlation between modeling results and experimental responses. Among the selected environmental variables, promotion of the interactive effects of nitrogen and phosphorus together with the optimum total nitrogen/phosphorus mass ratio (between 7.9 and 10.1) was determined to be the most significant stimulating parameter associated with algal blooming development dominated by non-nitrogen-fixing species. The favorable effects of strong illumination were shown to be greater than those of high temperature. The border values of total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations leading to a critical value of algal density under different water temperatures and light intensities could be predicted as nutrient loading thresholds for harmful algal blooms by our second-order polynomial regression model.

In-situ algal control by two-stage nanobubble technology in Taihu Lake: Efficacy and ecological impact

Abstract:Hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone nanobubble-coupled hydrodynamic cavitation have demonstrated effective algae control in laboratories, but their in-situ potential, especially impact on nutrient salt degradation and microbial communities remain unclear. This study applied two-stage nanobubble technology, combining hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone nanobubbles, in a 3300 m2 semi-enclosed area of Taihu Lake to address these gaps. Results show that the technology efficiently controls algae, reduces odors, improves anaerobic conditions, and lowers ammonia nitrogen. Over 20 days, chlorophyll-a concentration reduced by 77.46% and cyanobacterial phycocyanin by 89.47%. Additionally, the concentrations of 2-MIB, GSM, and DMTS fell below threshold values. Notably, the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria in sediment dropped from 8.53% in the control area to only 1.59%-3.65% in the experimental area. The technology also achieved a significant reduction in ammonia nitrogen, with removal efficiencies of 78.53% in the water column and 39.17% in sediments, though the removal of total phosphorus was limited. Furthermore, the two-stage nanobubble system enhanced the abundance of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms and genes in the water, while promoting nitrogen- and phosphorus-related microbial communities in sediments and inhibiting the cyanobacteria-associated genus Cyanobium PCC-6307. Thus, Two-stage nanobubble technology can be employed for in-situ algal control in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Eutrophication in lakes or reservoirs can lead to blue-green algae(BGA) bloom that is detrimental to the aquatic ecosystems and often pose a potentially serious health threat to people having access to the impaired waters.Since 1990s,Lake Dianchi has been experiencing BGA bloom almost on an annual basis,raising ever increasing levels of concerns from the public and governments.To control the eutrophication and reduce the outbreak frequency of BGA bloom in Lake Dianchi,it is necessary to identify the responsive relationship between the BGA bloom and the influencing factors including nutrient loadings,weather conditions,among others.However,to fulfill this task is very difficult in practice since there exist no,and it is impossible to obtain,a complete dataset that simultaneously covers the occurrence of BGA bloom and the influencing factors due to the transient and heterogeneous nature of the Lake Dianchi system.Even though the remote sensing technology offers a cost-effective way to acquire data about the occurrence of BGA bloom,it still far from sufficient to provide a complete dataset due to the data gap from lack of observations or interruption by clouds. To overcome the data limitation in deriving reliable relationship between BGA blooms and the main influencing factors,this study applied a robust EMB algorithm to reconstruct a complete dataset from the available dataset with missing data,hence forming a basis for quantitatively relating the BGA bloom to its contributing factors.The analysis starts with discovering the general trend of BGA bloom in Lake Dianch through using boxplots of chlorophyll-a data in the lake,which shows that the area represented by monitoring station Huiwanzhong appears to be the most likely place for BGA bloom.As for temporal trend,it was found that the chlorophyll-a concentration doesn′t have as much variability inter-annually as intra-annually.In general,chlorophyll-a concentrations increase from February to August,and then decrease thereafter until the next February.Subsequently,a multiple imputation based EMB algorithm was employed to re-construct the entire basic datasets from month April to October from 2004 through 2008 for the Waihai of Lake Dianchi based on the available incomplete datasets of weather condition and BGA bloom.With the complete datasets,the relationship between chlorophyll-a and outbreak probability of BGA bloom was established using conditional probability curves for two time ranges,i.e.,from April to October and June to September,respectively.The analysis suggests that there is a threshold concentration of chlorophyll-a determining whether a BGA bloom would occur.However,the same method was found to be invalid for analyzing the relationship between outbreak frequency and nutrient concentrations.The scatter plots of TN vs.TP along with labels of BGA bloom occurrence indicate that 1) there might not be a threshold exists for TN or TP to control BGA;2) it seems more efficient to reduce concentration of TN than TP;3) it is necessary to control concentration of TN and TP at a reasonable and realistic range,while pursuing a higher water quality standard in short term might not be necessary. The results of this study suggest that it is critical to reduce TN and TP under water quality standard level V by all means,while at the same time,supplemental measures such as water volume control,water quality and hydrodynamic condition adjustment and aquatic ecosystem restoration should be taken to direct the lake ecological system to evolve from the phytoplankton dominant regime to the macrophyte dominant regime.
Double effects of mitigating cyanobacterial blooms using modified clay technology: regulation and optimization of the microbial community structure

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are global hazards under global climate change and eutrophication conditions. Modified clay (MC) method is widely used to control HABs in Asian and American coastal waters. However, little research has been conducted on the underlying mechanisms by which MC controls blooms in freshwater environments. Herein, experiments and bioinformatics analyses were conducted for MC-based control of freshwater blooms in a closed water body with an area of approximately 240 m 2 in the Fuchun River, China. Results revealed that the dominant bloom species were Microcystis , and an 87.68–97.01% removal efficiency of whole algal biomass was achieved after 3 h of MC treatment. The weaker zeta potentials of Microcystis species and hydrophilic groups such as O-H and P-O-P in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) surrounding Microcystis cells made them easier to be flocculated and removed by MC particles, and the relative abundance of Microcystis decreased to 29.12% and that of Cyanobium increased to 40.97%. Therefore, MC changes the cyanobacterial community structure, which is accompanied by the elimination of Microcystis sp. apical dominance and enhanced competition between Cyanobium and Microcystis in the phytoplankton community, increasing cyanobacterial community diversity. Under MC treatment, residual microorganisms, including cyanobacteria, had a high potential for DNA damage repair and were more likely to survive after being subjected to oxidative stress. In the meanwhile, the abundance of genes involved in genetic information processing, signal transduction, and photosynthesis was decreased indicating that the residual microbiome was week in proliferation and light energy harvesting. Therefore, accompanied with the destruction of Microcystis colonies, MC changes the function of cyanobacteria and phycosphere microbiome, further hindering bloom development. These findings illustrate that MC can regulate and optimize the microbial community structure through which MC controls cyanobacterial blooms in ecosystems. Graphical .

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewThe aim of this review is to summarize the inactivation and removal technologies used for algal-bloom control and to serve the development of theories and technologies for algal bloom prevention and control in the future.Recent FindingsThe efficiency of inactivation and removal of algal blooms largely depends on the density of bloom-forming microalgae faced when the control measures are adopted. Locally enhanced electric field treatment technology has shown the most potential for low-density algal-bloom control, which could effectively inactivate algal cells with low energy consumption. Magnetic capture technology has outstanding advantages for the separation and capture of high-density algae blooms owing to its high efficiency, easy separation, and low cost.SummaryThis article reviews the physical, chemical, physicochemical, biological, and ecological methods of algal-bloom prevention and control. The key to effective prevention of algal blooms is to select the appropriate method based on the difference in microalgae density. For example, under low-density stages, if the inactivation of algae cells can be realized, the occurrence and development of high-density algal blooms may be prevented, and under high-density stages, if the capture of algae cells can be done effectively, the subsequent environmental hazards brought by algal blooms will be reduced or even eliminated. This paper will help in choosing appropriate methods of algal-bloom prevention and control based on the difference in microalgae density and providing suggestions for future research on algal-bloom control.

Abstract:The abnormal reproduction of algae in water worldwide is prominent in the context of human interference and global climate change. This study first thoroughly analyzed the effects of physical factors, such as light, temperature, hydrodynamics, and operational strategies, on algal growth and their mechanisms. Physical control techniques are safe and have great potential for preventing abnormal algal blooms in the absence of chemical reagents. The focus was on the principles and possible engineering applications of physical shading, ultrasound, micro-current, and ultraviolet (UV) technologies, in controlling abnormal algal reproduction. Physical shading can inhibit or weaken photosynthesis in algae, thereby inhibiting their growth. Ultrasound mainly affects the physiological and biochemical activities of cells by destroying the cell walls, air cells, and active enzymes. Micro-currents destroy the algal cell structure through direct and indirect oxidation, leading to algal cell death. UV irradiation can damage DNA, causing organisms to be unable to reproduce or algal cells to die directly. This article comprehensively summarizes and analyzes the advantages of physical prevention and control technologies for the abnormal reproduction of algae, providing a scientific basis for future research. In the future, attempts will be made toward appropriately and comprehensively utilizing various physical technologies to control algal blooms. The establishment of an intelligent, comprehensive physical prevention and control system to achieve environmentally friendly, economical, and effective physical prevention and control of algae, such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China, is of great importance for specific waters.
Effects of Eichhornia Crassipes Allelochemicals on the Growth of Two Mono-and Co-Cultured Algae Microcystis Aeruginosa and Scenedesmus Obliquus

Abstract:To explore the possibility of using allelochemicals in solving the problem of algal blooms in eutrophicated shallow lakes,five allelochemicals found from roots of Eichhornia crassipes（linoleic acid,1-linoleoyl-rac-glycerol,propionamide,N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine and nonanoic acid） were tested with mono-and co-cultured algae Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus.The results showed that components and doses of the allelochemicals,as well as culture modes,affected the growth of the two algae significantly（p 0.001）.The allelochemicals generally promoted the growth of the algae when added at low concentrations（0.1 ～ 1.0 mg.L-1） and during early culture stages,while such effects turned into inhibition when allelochemical concentration was increased（10.0 mg.L-1） and the culture stage was extended.Among the fived allelochemicals tested,nonanoic acid had the strongest effect on both algae,whereas individually,M.aeruginosa was most affected by propionamide,and S.obliquus by linoleic acid.Cell number proportions of S.obliquus in co-cultures were also increased by nonanoic acid at a concentration of 0.1 ～ 1.0 mg.L-1 and the other allelochemicals at 10.0 mg.L-1（p 0.05）.This research indicated a promising potential of the application of Eichhornia crassipes allelochemicals in control of aquatic algae.

Biological control approaches such as screening bacteria with the capability to degrade cyanobacteria are an environment-friendly way. An isolated antialgal strain Streptomyces sp. KY-34, was applied to degrade the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa, and the possible biodegradation mechanism was investigated. The results showed that the fermentation liquor of Streptomyces sp. KY-34 could inhibit the growth of M. aeruginosa by restrained the synthesis of chlorophyll and photosynthetic pigments, and decreasing the contents of cellular protein and non-protein, accordingly led to the increase of malondialdehyde content, and the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase in algae cells. In addition, the variation of the cellular ultrastructure indicated a serious change in algal physiology. It's revealed that the biodegradation mechanism of M. aeruginosa should primarily be that Streptomyces sp. KY-34 caused the damage of algae cell membrane and led to the increases of antioxidant enzymes, and then the growth of M. aeruginosawas inhibited.

Abstract:Graphical We investigated the effect on water purification and microbial community using effective microorganisms (EM) via in vitro experiments and field tests. There are very few reports about water purification and its influence on indigenous microorganisms by effective microorganisms (EM) in the fields. This study investigated the effect of EM on water purification and microbial community via in vitro and field experiments. In in vitro water purification experiments, we examined values for chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus, and total nitrogen (TN). In systems in which the active EM solutions were at a concentration of less than 1:2000 of the total water sample, the values after 28 days were equal to or lower than those of the control. In systems using 1:200 and 1:100 active EM solutions, COD and TN values were significantly lower in artificial wastewater compared to control. Conversely, they were significantly higher than the control in the pond water. When the active EM solutions were added to the pond water, total microbial plate counts were higher than the control after 28 days for all concentrations of the EM active solutions. Excessive use of EM caused deterioration of water quality and increase of microbial counts. The results of field experiments for 4 years suggested that EM treatment did not purify the pond water, establish introduced EM, or affect indigenous microorganisms.

Abstract:Cyanobacterial bloom has become the focus of all over the world because of its ecological risk and drinking water crisis.There are many reasons contribute to the cyanobacterial bloom in Lake Taihu. The characteristic of cyanobacteria themselves is the internal causes. As a subtropical shallow lake, Lake Taihu provides suitable temperature and hydrodynamic condition for the cyanobacterial bloom due to its geographical and hydrological meteorological characteristics. The shift from grass-shaped to algaeshaped ecosystem and the input of high load nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients are beneficial to the growth of cyanobacteria. In addition, the quadruple cycle of nitrogen and phosphorus intensifies cyanobacterial bloom. Cyanobacterial bloom interacts aqueous nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. In order to control bloom in Lake Taihu, we should increase the output of nutrients based on cutting off the source of nitrogen and phosphorus. Above all, it is the key of ecological restoration of Lake Taihu to sequester and strengthen the recovery of macrophytes so that the macrophytic and algal ecosystems can be reconstructed.
[Effects of EMA on Activities of Algal Antioxidant Enzymes].

Abstract:Using allelochemicals produced by macrophytes to control harmful algae is a novel antialgal method. The present research investigated effects of the species-specific antialgal allelochemical EMA on activities of antioxidant enzymes of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Chlorella vulagaris. The results showed that 0.25 mg/L of EMA increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD)and catalase (CAT) of C. pyrenoidosa and C. vulagaris. With the increase of EMA concentrations, activities of the 3 enzymes of C. pyrenoidosa decreased sharply. The activity of SOD of C. pyrenoidosa decreased to 0 when the EMA were 4 mg/L. With the increase of EMA concentrations, activities of the 3 enzymes of C. vulagaris increased to as higher as 3-4 folders of that of the control set. The results gave hints to elucidate the species-specific antialgal mechanisms of EMA.

Abstract:Algal blooms that occur periodically in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs are associated with the cumulative effects of excess nutrients from industrial and agricultural development. Algicidal bacteria can be used as environmentally friendly biocontrol agents to manage harmful algal blooms in eutrophic water. However, there is still a dearth of studies on the effects of mixed algicidal agents, the persistence of algae removal efficiency, and the impacts on native aquatic microbial communities. Two strains of algicidal bacteria, Cellvibrio sp. G1 and Chitinimonas sp. G2, were previously isolated and purified from reservoir sediment. Herein, G1 and G2 broth cultures, alone and in combination (1:1, V/V), were added to eutrophic water collected from a park at the volume ratio of 5 %. Eutrophic water remediation efficiency under different treatments was monitored for 30 days, and microbial community dynamics in water were analyzed by full-length sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes. The best algae removal efficiency was observed in the water treated with G1 alone, as indicated by the highest algae removal rate of 41.3 %. The total nitrogen removal rates of G1, G2, and their combination were 33.47 %, 23.65 %, and 28.88 %, respectively; ammonia‐nitrogen removal rates were 24.11 %, 25.02 %, and 19.63 %, respectively; total phosphorus removal rates were 24.11 %, 25.02 %, and 19.63 %, respectively; and orthophosphate removal rates were 46.11 %, 44.37 %, and 27.92 %, respectively. In the water treated with G1 and/or G2, the major genera with algicidal capacity (i.e., Cellvibrio and Chitinimonas) were outcompeted by the well adapted genera (e.g., Pseudomonas). At the late stages of treatment, the algicidal genera decreased in relative abundance, leading to decline in algae removal efficiency and increase in chlorophyll concentration. Based on both eutrophic water remediation efficiency and environmental adaptability, G1 alone was superior to G2 alone or in combination with G1, thus having potential practical implications.
