Analysis of Health Status and Utilization of Hospitalized Health Services among Africans Living in China

Abstract:Objective: To understand the health status, health behavior and utilization of hospitalized health services of Africans living in China, and to provide evidence for improving health management of Africans in China. Methods: A face-to-face survey was conducted among Africans living in China by using questionnaires, which included demographic characteristics, self-assessment of health status, health behavior and utilization of inpatient health services. Self-rated health status was measured by SRHMS self-rated health rating scale. Results: 76.0% of Africans were male, with an average age of 27.34±6.73, and 87.5% of Africans had high-risk sexual behaviors. The average scores of physiological, psychological and social health of Africans were 159.7, 113.5 and 102.7 respectively, and the total score of self-rated health assessment was 375.9. Only 1% of Africans had hypertension, diabetes and hepatitis C. Among the Africans, the annual hospitalization rate was 6.7%, and the proportion of patients who should be hospitalized but not hospitalized was 3.8%. Conclusions: The health status of Africans living in China is relatively good, but their health behavior is poor, especially sexual behaviors. At the same time, the utilization of hospitalized health services is relatively inadequate. Therefore, we should carry out various educations on sexual health knowledge for Africans in China in order to raise health awareness, change unhealthy sexual behavior, prevent the spread of infectious diseases, and reasonably guide Africans to make effective use of health services.
