Abstract:We propose a general machine learning-based framework for building an accurate and widely applicable energy functional within the framework of generalized Kohn-Sham density functional theory. To this end, we develop a way of training self-consistent models that are capable of taking large datasets from different systems and different kinds of labels. We demonstrate that the functional that results from this training procedure gives chemically accurate predictions on energy, force, dipole, and electron density for a large class of molecules. It can be continuously improved when more and more data are available.

Abstract:There is growing evidence, showing that the widely-used approximate functionals, such as B3LYP, degrade as the system becomes large, underestimate reaction barrier heights and fail to bind van der Waals systems, etc. The success of the Kohn-Sham implementation of density functional theory (DFT) depends on the quality of the exchange-correlation functional. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress on the construction of a new generation functional, namely doubly hybrid density functionals (DHDFs). We pointed out that the theoretical basis of DHDFs lies in Coding-Levy (GL) coupling-constant perturbation theory and adiabatic connection method, and we proposed that the currently available DHDFs can be classified into three groups by their different references used to construct the second order perturbation energy. We systematically examined the performance of various DHDFs. Finally, possible directions for future development of DHDFs are forecasted.

Abstract:Recent progress in density functional theory (DFT) and its numerical methods is briefly reviewed. Finding good approximation for exchange-correlation function is one of the main targets in DFT. With the development of modem functionals, DFT leads to more and more accurate results. In addition, extensions of DFT to the time dependent case and relativistic limit are also active topics. Along with the progress in DFT itself, the development of corresponding numerical methods is also rapid. From the traditional finite difference (FD), finite element (FE) to novel wavelet bases, many techniques are used to pursue efficient and accurate DFT calculations. Meanwhile, the linear scaling algorithms of DFT are getting mature, which makes the application of DFT to large systems such as biological macro molecules become possible. All the progress leads DFT applicable to a broad range of problems. This trend is illustrated by some examples at the end of this article.

The continuing development of density functional theory (DFT) has greatly expanded the size and complexity of molecules amenable to computationally tractable simulation. The conventional metric of success for new functionals has been the accuracy of their calculated energies. Medvedev et al. examined how well these functionals calculate electron density across a series of neutral and cationic atoms (see the Perspective by Hammes-Schiffer). Although historically the accuracies of energy and density have improved in tandem, certain recent functionals have sacrificed fidelity to the true density. Abstract:Density Functional Theory (DFT) is one of the most widely used methods for "ab initio" calculations of the structure of atoms, molecules, crystals, surfaces, and their interactions. Unfortunately, the customary introduction to DFT is often considered too lengthy to be included in various curricula. An alternative introduction to DFT is presented here, drawing on ideas which are well-known from thermodynamics, especially the idea of switching between different independent variables. The central theme of DFT, i.e. the notion that it is possible and beneficial to replace the dependence on the external potential v(r) by a dependence on the density distribution n(r), is presented as a straightforward generalization of the familiar Legendre transform from the chemical potential (\mu) to the number of particles (N). This approach is used here to introduce the Hohenberg-Kohn energy functional and to obtain the corresponding theorems, using classical nonuniform fluids as simple examples. The energy functional for electronic systems is considered next, and the Kohn-Sham equations are derived. The exchange-correlation part of this functional is discussed, including both the local density approximation to it, and its formally exact expression in terms of the exchange-correlation hole. A very brief survey of various applications and extensions is included.

Abstract:The density functional theory is one of the most efficient and promising methods of quantum physics and chemistry. It is a theory of electronic structure formulated in terms of the electron density as the basic unknown function instead of the electron wave function. According to the fundamental theorems of Hohenberg and Kohn, the electron density carries all the information one might need to determine any property of the electron system. However, the way of obtaining it, is not at all trivial. In this report, the recent advances are summarized. After a review of the Hohenberg–Kohn theorems, the method of constrained search and the Kohn–Sham scheme, exact theorems, relations and inequalities are discussed. There are several important concepts of chemistry (e.g. electronegativity, hardness, softness) that have recently obtained a firm foundation in the density functional theory. The optimized potential method and the methods that generate the potential from the electron density are reviewed. The local and nonlocal approximate functionals are compared. Extensions of the ground-state density functional theory (excited states, time-dependent, relativistic and finite temperature) are summarized. A review of the applications to atoms and molecules is presented.

Abstract:DFT calculations have become widespread in both chemistry and materials, because they usually provide useful accuracy at much lower computational cost than wavefunction-based methods. All practical DFT calculations require an approximation to the unknown exchange-correlation energy, which is then used self-consistently in the Kohn-Sham scheme to produce an approximate energy from an approximate density. Density-corrected DFT is simply the study of the relative contributions to the total energy error. In the vast majority of DFT calculations, the error due to the approximate density is negligible. But with certain classes of functionals applied to certain classes of problems, the density error is sufficiently large as to contribute to the energy noticeably, and its removal leads to much better results. These problems include reaction barriers, torsional barriers involving $\pi$-conjugation, halogen bonds, radicals and anions, most stretched bonds, etc. In all such cases, use of a more accurate density significantly improves performance, and often the simple expedient of using the Hartree-Fock density is enough. This article explains what DC-DFT is, where it is likely to improve results, and how DC-DFT can produce more accurate functionals. We also outline challenges and prospects for the field.

Abstract:We develop a self-consistent first-principle method based on the density functional theory. Physical quantities such as the density of states, Fermi energy and electron density are obtained using a time-dependent random state method without diagonalization. The numerical error for calculating either global or local variables always scales as 1 / S N e , where N e is the number of electrons and S is the number of random states, leading to a sublinear computational cost with the system size. In the limit of large systems, one random state could be enough to achieve reasonable accuracy. The accuracy and scaling properties of using the method are derived analytically and verified numerically in different condensed matter systems. Our time-dependent random state approach provides a powerful strategy for large-scale density functional calculations.

It covers three distinct while also related topics: (i) development of a novel scheme to perform self-consistent field (SCF) calculations using a minimal adaptive basis (MAB) that is optimized on-the-fly; (ii) development and assessment of energy decomposition analysis (EDA) methods, including a new EDA scheme that is capable of probing the observable effects of intermolecular interactions, and a thorough discussion on the definition of the charge-transfer term in EDA methods; (iii) application of EDA to the development of potential energy surfaces for molecular simulations, including an assessment of the AMOEBA polarizable force field, and the formulation, implementation, and analysis of a mutually polarizable QM/MM scheme employing AMOEBA.

Abstract:Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) is a standard tool in most branches of chemistry, but accuracies for many molecules are limited to 2-3 kcal/mol with presently-available functionals. Ab initio methods, such as coupled-cluster, routinely produce much higher accuracy, but computational costs limit their application to small molecules. We create density functionals from coupled-cluster energies, based only on DFT densities, via machine learning. These functionals attain quantum chemical accuracy (errors below 1 kcal/mol). Moreover, density-based ∆-learning (learning only the correction to a standard DFT calculation, ∆-DFT) significantly reduces the amount of training data required. We demonstrate these concepts for a single water molecule, and then illustrate how to include molecular symmetries with ethanol. Finally, we highlight the robustness of ∆-DFT by correcting DFT simulations of resorcinol on the fly to obtain molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories with coupled-cluster accuracy. Thus ∆-DFT opens the door to running gas-phase MD simulations with quantum chemical accuracy, even for strained geometries and conformer changes where standard DFT is quantitatively incorrect.

Abstract:The development of better density functional theory (DFT) methods is one of the most active research areas, given the importance of DFT for ubiquitous molecular and materials simulations. However, this research primarily focuses on improving a specific exchange-correlation Kohn–Sham density functional. Here, we propose a robust procedure for constructing transferable ensembles of density functionals that perform superior to any constituent individual density functional. We show that such ensembles built only with the density functionals predating the GMTKN55 benchmark can reach a record-low weighted error of 1.69 kcal/mol on this benchmark compared to 3.08 kcal/mol of the best constituent density functional. We also introduce the DENS24 density functional ensembles as practical DFT methods with consistently accurate performance for various simulations at affordable cost. DENS24 ensembles will be available open-source and for simulations online as described at https://xacs.xmu.edu.cn/docs/mlatom/tutorial_dens.html.

Abstract:Density-corrected density functional theory (DC-DFT) is enjoying substantial success in improving semilocal DFT calculations in a wide variety of chemical problems. This paper provides the formal theoretical framework and assumptions for the analysis of any functional minimization with an approximate functional. We generalize DC-DFT to allow comparison of any two functionals, not just comparison with the exact functional. We introduce a linear interpolation between any two approximations, and use the results to analyze global hybrid density functionals. We define the basins of density-space in which this analysis should apply, and give quantitative criteria for when DC-DFT should apply. We also discuss the effects of strong correlation on density-driven error, utilizing the restricted HF Hubbard dimer as an illustrative example.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) uses a density functional approximation (DFA) to add electron correlation to mean-field electronic structure calculations. Standard strategies (generalized gradient approximations GGAs, meta-GGAs, hybrids, etc.) for building DFAs, no matter whether based on exact constraints or empirical parametrization, all face a zero-sum game between overdelocalization (fractional charge error, FC) and underestimation of covalent bonding (fractional spin error, FS). This work presents an alternative strategy. Practical "Rung 3.5" ingredients are used to implement insights from hyper-GGA DFAs that reduce both FS and FC errors. Prototypes of this strategy qualitatively improve FS and FC error over 40 years of standard DFAs while maintaining low cost and practical evaluation of properties. Numerical results ranging from transition metal thermochemistry to absorbance peaks and excited-state geometry optimizations highlight this strategy's promise and indicate areas requiring further development.
