Abstract:Nonlinear refraction and scattering effect properties of C-60/toluene solution were studied by using the Z-scan technique and 532 nm laser delivering 4 nanosecond (ns) pulses. With single ns pulse, reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and negative nonlinear refraction were observed, and the nonlinear scattering effect in the solution could not be ignored when the pulse energy was large enough. The refraction cross-section of the singlet and triplet excited-state were calculated as eta(S1) = 8.02x10(-28) m(2), eta(T1) = 8.52x10(-28) m(2), respectively. The nonlinear scattering coefficient was also obtained.

Abstract:Excited state nonlinear refraction of the C-60/toluene solution is studied using a picosecond time-resolved pump-probe system based on a 4f nonlinear imaging technique with the phase object. Negative nonlinear refraction of the C-60/toluene solution is observed after zero-delay time besides normal nonlinear absorption. By using a five-energy-band model, both the change of refraction index per unit density of the first singlet excited state and the first triplet excited state of the C-60 molecule having a negative sign are determined. The nonlinear refraction, as well as the dynamics of neat toluene and its excited state contribution to the solution, is also investigated.

Abstract:Triplet state nonlinearity of C60 in toluene is studied using the Z-scan technique with 8 ns, 532 nm pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Compared with the Z-scan results of C60 in toluene and iodine in toluene with proper concentration, the solvent instantaneous nonlinearity and the thermal nonlinearity resulting from the C60 intersystem crossing and excited state absorption are estimated. The real part of the C60 triplet state molecular polarizability is obtained.

Abstract:The nonlinear refraction property of excited-state nonlinear optical materials was studied based on rate-equation theory. The effects of the ratios of excited-state absorption cross section and refrangibility to those of ground state upon their nonlinear refraction properties were analyzed. The nonlinear optical properties of (m-MeC6H4)5C60H-toluene solution were investigated by using Z-scan method with 8 ns 532 nm laser pulses. The solution was proved to possess strong nonlinear absorption and weak nonlinear refraction.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity of phthalocyanine zinc dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide was investigated using a Z-scan technique. The sample demonstrated strong reverse saturable absorption and an overall self-focusing effect. The physical mechanism of nonlinear refraction was attributed to the competition between excited-state refraction and excited-state absorption-induced thermal refraction. The effect of excited-state absorption-induced thermal refraction on the nonlinear refraction of the sample was described and analysed in a transient regime as the input energy varied.

Abstract:The method of steady state reverse saturable absorption was proposed and the triple first excited state absorption cross sections of C60 (at 488 nm wavelength and 514.5 nm wavelength respectively) were measured using this method. Owing to that only one modulated quasi-continuous Ar+ laser is used, this method is simpler than other methods and the requirements of light source and detector are significantly reduced.

Abstract:Using the Z-scan technique with 532 nm 16 picosecond laser pulses, we observe reverse saturable absorption and positive nonlinear refraction of toluene solutions of both C(60) and C(70). By deducting the positive Kerr nonlinear refraction of the solvent, we notice that the solute molecules contribute to nonlinear refraction of opposite signs: positive for C(60) and negative for C(70). Attributing nonlinear absorption and refraction of both solutes to cascading one-photon excitations, we illustrate that they satisfy the Kramers-Kronig relation. Accordingly, we attest the signs and magnitudes of nonlinear refraction for both solutes at 532 nm by Kramers-Kronig transform of the corresponding nonlinear absorption spectra.

Abstract:By using the Gaussian Z-scan technique, a transition from the self-focusing property to the self-defocusing property with a decrease in concentration under 11 ns pulse excitation in tetrasulfonated copper phthalocyanine (CuPcTs) dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is observed, which is due to the coexistence of excited-state refraction and transient thermal-lens effect. The nonlinear optical properties of a CuPcTs/DMSO solution are investigated by using the top-hat Z-scan technique under different laser pulse excitations with the same fluence at 532 nm. The mechanism of the optical nonlinearities for the solution is studied by using an improved picosecond time-resolved pump-probe technique which can simultaneously measure the dynamic nonlinear absorption and refraction conveniently. The experimental results are described very well by using a simple three-level model and the theory of the transient thermal refraction in liquids. The values for the excited-state absorption and refraction cross section are also obtained.

Abstract:Excited state lifetimes of C60/toluene solution and C60 films macromolecular were measured by pump-probe method. Relation between optical switching effect of material and pulse width of pumping field is briefly described. It is found that the faster switching speed of light is, the triplet state lifetime is shorter. A He-Ne laser, as a probe, passed through the sample in the pump-probe experiment. All-optical switching effect was realized. Changing the optical power of the pumping field, switching response of the sample and modulation depth were investigated. In certain experimental conditions, relation between transmission through the sample and response were measured by an oscilloscope. Triple state lifetime of the molecule is speculated. The result showed that C60/toluene solution and C60 film have a fast response time. They would be utilized in some applications, such as optical switches, photonic devices.

Abstract:The quantum yield of triplet formation (��ISC) and the triplet lifetime (��t) of C60, as well as the quantum yield of singlet oxygen formation (�ա�) by the quenching of the triplet state of C60 and the singlet lifetime (��O) of oxygen are measured by a time-resolved thermal lensing technique. Both ��ISC and �ա� are nearly unity and the lifetimes of both the triplet C60 and the singlet oxygen are in the range of 8-60 ��s and 20��s respectively.

Abstract:The Z-scan experiments were carried out to investigate the soluble carbon nanotubes. The thickness of sample is changed in order to study “thin” and “thick” sample respectively. The experiments are carried out using 8ns, 10Hz repetition rate laser pulses at 1064nm and 532nm. The transmittance curves of closed-aperture Z-scan show that nonlinear refraction is not the optical limiting mechanism of solubilized carbon nanotubes. The curves of opened-aperture Z-scan indicate that nonlinear absorption exists in this solution obviously, which may be the primary optical limiting mechanism of this material.

Abstract:We report on a method of determining the C60 molecular polarizability αe of the excited singlet state under 23 picosecond excitation at 532 nm using the Z-scan technique. Based on the Clausius–Mossotti equation, the sign and the magnitude of the real part and the imaginary part of αe are respectively measured to be 1.2×10−22 and 7.2×10−23 esu. We also obtain the nonlinear refractive cross section σr of 4.2×10−17 cm2.

Abstract:The absorption properties in excited state and the optical limiting behaviors of organometallic C60-chromium derivatives were studied experimentally by using a double frequency ns/ps Nd:YAG pulse laser system with 532 nm wavelength and 21 ps pulse-width. The experimental results were analyzed by using the singlet excited state absorption theory, and were shown to agree well with the theoretical analysis. Compared with the optical limiting of Fullerene toluene solution, the experimental results show that these new materials have good optical limiting properties.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study on the two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of C60. On the basis of the equilibrium geometry optimized by B3LYP/6-31G method, we employ the ZINDO method combined SOS formula to investigate the second hyperpolarizability and TPA cross section of C60. The calculated result of the real part of the second hyperpolarizability of C60 is in good agreement with the previous calculation and the experimental observation. In the 400–1000 nm range of TPA wavelength, we calculated TPA cross sections corresponding to all two photon allowed states. As a result, we find that there is only a TPA cross section maximum—995.7×10−50cm4s/photon at 518 nm. Another interesting phenomenon is that C60 possesses the distinct TPA process in contrast to other conjugated molecules in terms of three-state approximation. This paper provides a theoretical basis of further studying TPA properties of C60.

Abstract:We present the optical response of solutions of C60 and C70 fullerenes to high-intensity visible laser pulses. A decrease of the transmission with increasing input intensity is observed at different wavelengths. The measurements are compared with simulations using a rate equation model. Excited-state absorption cross sections are evaluated and used to calculate the imaginary part of the resonant nonlinear susceptibility χ(3).
