Abstract:In this work, we have used a combination of vibrational spectroscopy (infrared, Raman and inelastic neutron scattering) and periodic density functional theory to investigate the structure of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) in the liquid and solid states. The spectra clearly show that the hydrogen bonding is much stronger in the solid than the liquid state. The structure of MSA is not known; however, mineral acids typically adopt a chain structure in condensed phases. A periodic density functional theory (CASTEP) calculation based on the linear chain structure found in the closely related molecule trifluoromethanesulfonic acid gave good agreement between the observed and calculated spectra, particularly with regard to the methyl and sulfonate groups. The model accounts for the large widths of the asymmetric S-O stretch modes; however, the external mode region is not well described. Together, these observations suggest that the basic model of four molecules in the primitive unit cell, linked by hydrogen bonding into chains, is correct, but that MSA crystallizes in a different space group than that of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.

Abstract:The vibrational overtone band of monodeuterated methane (CH3D) in the region 5900-6100 cm(-1) was recorded by a high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer. Rotational analyses were performed separately for the parallel 2v(4)(A(1)) and perpendicular 2v(4)(E) bands, whose origins were found to be 5980.41 cm(-1) and 6022.21 cm(-1), respectively. The A(l) band displays J-resolved rotational structure while the K structure is resolved only at higher J values. A resonance Hamiltonian with the polyad number P = 2n(1) + 2n(4) + n(5) is derived using the fourth order Canonical Van Vleck Perturbation Theory (CVPT) to show that the 2v(4)(A(1)) and 2v(4)(E) are vibrationally perturbed by Fermi and Darling-Dennison resonances. The observation of rotational l-resonance in the 2v(4)(E) band is a consequence and evidence of the mixing of the vibrational states with different l values.

Abstract:Chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for performing broadband gas-phase rotational spectroscopy, and its applications include discovery of new molecules, complex mixture analysis, and exploration of fundamental molecular physics. Here we report the development of a new K a band (26.5-40 GHz) CP-FTMW spectrometer that is equipped with a pulsed supersonic expansion source and a heated reservoir for low-volatility samples. The spectrometer is built around a 150 W traveling wave tube amplifier and has an instantaneous bandwidth that covers the entire K a band spectral range. To test the performance of the spectrometer, the rotational spectrum of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), a former gasoline additive and environmental pollutant, has been measured for the first time in this spectral range. Over 1000 spectroscopic transitions have been measured and assigned to the vibrational ground state and a newly-identified torsionally excited state; all transitions were fit using the XIAM program to a root-mean-square deviation of 22~kHz. The spectrum displays internal rotation splitting, nominally forbidden transitions, and an intriguing axis-switching effect between the ground and torsionally excited state that is a consequence of MTBE's extreme near-prolate nature. Finally, the sensitivity of the spectrometer enabled detection of all singly-substituted 13 C and 18 O isotopologues in natural abundance. This set of isotopic spectra allowed for a partial r 0 structure involving the heavy atoms to be derived, resolving a structural discrepancy in the literature between previous microwave and electron diffraction measurements.

Abstract:The electronic structure of methane has been studied in detail by the high performance energy multichannel electron momentum spectrometer developed recently. The accurate electron momentum distributions of the 1t(2) and 2a(1) valence orbitals of methane are measured. Excellent agreement can be found between the experimental data and the calculations using the Hartree-Fock method and CI method with the 146-GTO basis functions. In the inner valence region clearly satellite structures of the 2a(1) orbital are observed. The experimental binding energies and pole strengths are compared with the result of 2ph-TDA Green function's calculation. EMS measurements and the 2ph-TDA calculation can give the consistent values of binding energies, while the 2ph-TDA calculation is found to overestimate the main peak intensity of 2a(1) orbital and underestimate the intensity of satallite structures.

Abstract:Raman spectra obtained in conditions of resonance with electronic excitations are often dominated by transitions that are very weak in the normal off-resonance spectrum. These enhanced bands can be used to determine the symmetry of the resonant excited electronic state if this state gives rise to a forbidden transition. In this case the most strongly enhanced bands correspond to binary combinations and overtones of the vibronic promoting modes active in the transition. The use of this method to determine the symmetry of excited states of butadiene and benzene is presented.1,2 The most strongly enhanced vibrations associated with resonance with allowed electronic transitions are those that have large projections along the geometry change associated with excitation. Recent results for a series of substituted ethylene species are presented. Resonance with excitations that have both allowed and induced vibronic character gives rise to characteristic fundamental transitions of the promoting modes. The case of substituted benzene molecules is discussed.

Abstract:The vibrational spectroscopy of protonated methane and its mixed hydrogen/deuterium isotopologues remains a challenge to both experimental and computational spectroscopy due to the iconic floppiness of CH5+. Here, we compute the finite-temperature broadband infrared spectra of CH5+ and all its isotopologues, i.e. CHnD5-n+ up to CD5+, from path integral molecular dynamics in conjunction with interactions and dipoles computed consistently at CCSD(T) coupled cluster accuracy. The potential energy and dipole moment surfaces have been accurately represented in full dimensionality in terms of high-dimensional neural networks. The resulting computational efficiency allows us to establish CCSD(T) accuracy at the level of converged path integral simulations. For all six isotopologues, the computed broadband spectra compare very favorably to the available experimental broadband spectra obtained from laser induced reactions action vibrational spectroscopy. The current approach is found to consistently and significantly improve on previous calculations of these broadband vibrational spectra and defines the new cutting-edge for what has been dubbed the "enfant terrible" of molecular spectroscopy in view of its pronounced large-amplitude motion that involves all intramolecular degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Benchmark-quality rovibrational data are reported for the methane dimer from variational nuclear motion computations using an ab initio intermolecular potential energy surface reported by [M. P. Metz et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2019, 21, 13504-13525]. A simple polarizability model is used to compute Raman transition moments that may be relevant for future direct observation of the intermolecular dynamics. Non-negligible $\Delta K\neq 0$ transition moments arise in this symmetric top system due to strong rovibrational couplings.

Abstract:We present the carbon and fluorine x-ray emission spectra of methane and the fluoromethanes (CH4-xFx, x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4), measured in high resolution. Relative x-ray emission intensities in dipole velocity and length gauges have been derived from the independent particle approximation using Hartree Fock ground state molecular orbitals. The results of the calculations are compared with the experimental spectra. In the experimental carbon (K-V) emission spectrum of CF4 We observe dipole-forbidden electronic transitions. We suggest that these transitions arise due to vibronic coupling, i.e. intensity is borrowed from the dipole-allowed transitions.

Abstract:The ability to achieve sub-wavenumber resolution (0.6 cm(-1)) and a large signal-to-noise ratio in high-resolution broadband sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (HR-BB-SFG-VS) allows for the detailed SFG spectral lineshapes to be used in the unambiguous determination of fine spectral features. Changes in the structural spectroscopic phase in SFG-VS as a function of beam polarization and experimental geometry proved to be instrumental in the identification of an unexpected 2.78 +/- 0.07 cm(-1) spectral splitting for the two methyl groups at the vapor/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, (CH3)(2)SO) liquid interface as well as in the determination of their orientational angles. Abstract:A data-set of nearly 100,000 symmetry unique multi-configurational ab initio points for methane were generated at the (AE)-MRCI-F12(Q)/CVQZ-F12 level, including energies beyond 30,000 cm(-1) above the minimum and fit into potential energy surfaces (PESs) by several permutation invariant schemes. A multi-expansion interpolative fit combining interpolating moving least squares (IMLS) fitting and permutation invariant polynomials (PIP) was able to fit the complete data-set to a root-mean-square deviation of 1.0 cm(-1) and thus was used to benchmark the other fitting methods. The other fitting methods include a single PIP expansion and two neural network (NN) based approaches, one of which combines NN with PIP. Full-dimensional variational vibrational calculations using a contracted-iterative method (and a Lanczos eigensolver) were used to assess the spectroscopic accuracy of the electronic structure method. The results show that the NN-based fitting approaches are able to fit the data-set remarkably accurately with the PIP-NN method producing levels in remarkably close agreement with the PIP-IMLS benchmark. The (AE)-MRCI-F12(Q)/CVQZ-F12 electronic structure method produces vibrational levels of near spectroscopic accuracy and a superb equilibrium geometry. The levels are systematically slightly too high, beginning at similar to 1-2 cm(-1) above the fundamentals and becoming correspondingly higher for overtones. The PES is therefore suitable for small ab initio or empirical corrections and since it is based on a multi-reference method, can be extended to represent dynamically relevant dissociation channels.

Abstract:Vibrational dynamics and energy transfer were identified by femtosecond time- and frequency-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy. Nitromethane (NM) was selectively and collectively excited in an orderly manner. The beating modes involving vibrations were described and the dephasing time of theses vibrational modes was monitored. The results indicated that intramolecular vibrational energy transfer was governed by vibrational couplings. When the NM/methanol mixed solutions were collectively excited, no evidence for a beat or intermolecular energy transfer was found because hydrogen bonds acted as a molecular damper yielding a faster decay of molecular dynamics.

Abstract:Carbon-hydrogen (C-H) vibration modes serve as key probes in the chemical identification of hydrocarbons and in vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy of hydrocarbons at the liquid/gas interface. Their assignments pose a challenge from a theoretical viewpoint. In this work, we present a detailed study of the C-H stretching region of dimethyl sulfoxide using a new ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) module that we have implemented in NWChem. Through a combination of AIMD simulations and static normal mode analysis, we interpret experimental infrared and Raman spectra and explore the role of anharmonic effects in this system. Comprehensive anharmonic normal mode analysis of the C-H stretching region casts doubt upon previous experimental assignments of the shoulder on the symmetric C-H stretching peak. In addition, our AIMD simulations also show significant broadening of the in-phase symmetric C-H stretching resonance, which suggests that the experimentally observed shoulder is due to thermal broadening of the symmetric stretching resonance.

Abstract:We investigated the rotational spectrum of 2,5-dimethylfluorobenzene containing coupled large amplitude motions of two methyl groups in the frequency range from 2 to 26.5 GHz using a pulsed molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The internal rotation of two inequivalent methyl groups with low torsional barriers (around 16 and 226 cm−1) causes splittings of all rotational transitions into quintets with separations of up to hundreds of MHz between the torsional components. Spectral analysis and modeling of the observed splittings were performed using the programs XIAM and BELGI-Cs-2Tops, whereby the latter achieved measurement accuracy. The methyl internal rotation can be used to examine the electronic and steric environments around the methyl group because they affect the methyl torsional barrier. Electronic properties play a particularly important role in aromatic molecules in the presence of a π-conjugated double bond system. The experimental results were compared with those of quantum chemistry. Benchmark calculations resulted in the conclusion that the B3LYP-D3BJ/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory can be recommended for predicting rotational constants to guide the microwave spectral assignment of dimethylfluorobenzenes in particular and toluene derivatives in general.

Vibrational spectroscopy of metal methanesulfonates: M = Na, Cs, Cu, Ag, Cd

Abstract:In this work, we have used a combination of vibrational spectroscopy (infrared, Raman and inelastic neutron scattering) and periodic density functional theory to investigate six metal methanesulfonate compounds that exhibit four different modes of complexation of the methanesulfonate ion: ionic, monodentate, bidentate and pentadentate. We found that the transition energies of the modes associated with the methyl group (C-H stretches and deformations, methyl rock and torsion) are essentially independent of the mode of coordination. The SO3 modes in the Raman spectra also show little variation. In the infrared spectra, there is a clear distinction between ionic (i.e. not coordinated) and coordinated forms of the methanesulfonate ion. This is manifested as a splitting of the asymmetric S-O stretch modes of the SO3 moiety. Unfortunately, no further differentiation between the various modes of coordination: unidentate, bidentate etc … is possible with the compounds examined. While it is likely that such a distinction could be made, this will require a much larger dataset of compounds for which both structural and spectroscopic data are available than that available here.

Abstract:This work analyzes the nuclear spin–rotation contribution to the nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation of methyl groups from 10 rigid compounds (eight benzene derivatives with one, two, or three methyl groups and two bicyclic molecules) with internal rotation axes not aligned to the smallest molecular moment of inertia via molecular dynamics simulation and ab initio calculation. The molecular dynamics simulation and ab initio calculation of nuclear spin-rotation coupling constants reproduce the experimental behavior in selected systems. The presented methodology can help in the analysis and interpretation of experimental relaxation data.

Measurement and assignment of J = 5 to 9 rotational energy levels in the 9070-9370 cm$^{-1}$ range of methane using optical frequency comb double-resonance spectroscopy

Abstract:We use optical-optical double-resonance (OODR) spectroscopy with a continuous wave (CW) pump and a cavity-enhanced frequency comb probe to measure high rotational energy levels of methane in the upper part of the triacontad polyad (P6). A high-power CW optical parametric oscillator, tunable around 3000 cm$^{-1}$, is consecutively locked to the P(7, A$_2$), Q(7, A$_2$), R(7, A$_2$), and Q(6, F$_2$) transitions in the ${\nu}$$_3$ band, and a comb covering the 5800-6100 cm$^{-1}$ range probes sub-Doppler ladder-type transitions from the pumped levels with J' = 6 to 8, respectively. We report 118 probe transitions in the 3${\nu}$$_3$ $\leftarrow$ ${\nu}$$_3$ spectral range with uncertainties down to 300 kHz (1 x 10$^{-5}$ cm$^{-1}$), reaching 84 unique final states in the 9070-9370 cm$^{-1}$ range with rotational quantum numbers J between 5 and 9. We assign these states using combination differences and by comparison to theoretical predictions from a new ab initio-based effective Hamiltonian and dipole moment operator. This is the first line-by-line experimental verification of theoretical predictions for these hot-band transitions, and we find a better agreement of transition wavenumbers with the new calculations compared to the TheoReTS/HITEMP and ExoMol databases. We also compare the relative intensities and find an overall good agreement with all three sets of predictions. Finally, we report the wavenumbers of 27 transitions in the 2${\nu}$$_3$ spectral range, observed as V-type transitions from the ground state, and compare them to the new Hamiltonian, HITRAN2020, ExoMol and the WKMLC line lists.

Femtosecond Symmetry Breaking and Coherent Relaxation of Methane Cations at the Carbon K-Edge

Abstract:Understanding the relaxation pathways of photoexcited molecules is essential to gain atomistic level insight into photochemistry. Herein, we perform a time-resolved study of ultrafast molecular symmetry breaking via geometric relaxation (Jahn-Teller distortion) on the methane cation. Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with soft X-rays at the carbon K-edge reveals that the distortion occurs within $10\pm 2$ femtoseconds after few-femtosecond strong-field ionization of methane. The distortion activates coherent oscillations in the scissoring vibrational mode of the symmetry broken cation, which are detected in the X-ray signal. These oscillations are damped within $58\pm13$ femtoseconds, as vibrational coherence is lost with the energy redistributing into lower-frequency vibrational modes. This study completely reconstructs the molecular relaxation dynamics of this prototypical example and opens new avenues for exploring complex systems.
