Abstract:This study focuses on increasingly competitive Chinese e-commerce enterprises and explores the impact of logistics outsourcing partnerships on service expansion and logistics outcomes in supply chain strategy. The research results show that among the determining factors of logistics outsourcing, reducing costs will affect the improvement of service levels in addition to traditional functions, as well as considerations for the use and compatibility of information systems (+). Among the determining factors of logistics outsourcing, the improvement of service level and the utilization and compatibility of information systems have a positive (+) impact on the level of logistics outsourcing. In addition, besides traditional functions, all other functions in the outsourcing level have a meaningful impact on logistics efficiency and effectiveness. In the context of logistics outsourcing decisions, cost reduction has been confirmed as an extremely critical factor. Companies should focus not only on outsourcing traditional logistics functions but also on improving service levels and enhancing the utilization and compatibility of information systems to achieve cost savings. The effective utilization of information systems and compatibility are key elements in elevating the level of outsourcing. Companies need to develop and enhance their ability to effectively use information systems while maintaining compatibility with other systems, which contributes to increased efficiency in logistics management. Furthermore, this underscores the importance of viewing outsourcing as a strategic tool rather than just a means for cost reduction, allowing companies to gain a competitive edge. To achieve the best results, a comprehensive approach that considers both traditional functions and service-related aspects, along with information system functionalities, is necessary. Such an integrated approach is expected to enhance the level of logistics outsourcing and optimize logistics performance.

Abstract:We consider a supply chain in which a producer supplies a fresh product, through a third-party logistics (3PL) provider, to a distant market where a distributor purchases and sells it to end customers. The product is perishable, both the quantity and quality of which may deteriorate during the process of transportation. The market demand is random, sensitive to the selling price as well as the freshness of the product. We derive the optimal decisions for the three supply chain members, including the 3PL provider's transportation fee, the producer's shipping quantity and wholesale price, and the distributor's purchasing quantity and retail price. We find that the presence of the 3PL provider in the supply chain has a significant impact on its performance. We propose an incentive scheme to coordinate the supply chain. The scheme consists of two contracts, including a wholesale-market clearance (WMC) contract between the producer and the distributor, and a wholesale-price-discount sharing (WDS) contract between the producer and the 3PL provider. We show that the proposed contracts can eliminate the two sources of “double marginalization” that exist in the three-tier supply chain, and induce the three parties to act in a coordinated way.

Abstract:Abstract The 3PL industry has grown rapidly over the past few years, and its emission reduction behavior is gaining attention. This paper considers a supply chain system composed of a manufacturer, a retailer, and a third-party logistics provider (3PL), in which both the manufacturer and the 3PL make the low-carbon investment. 3PL is a leader in the low-carbon supply chain. To promote emission reduction in logistics, the manufacturer and the retailer separately share the logistics emission reduction costs of the 3PL. Through comparing the no-sharing, manufacturer-sharing, and retailer-sharing models, we discuss the cost-sharing strategy preference of each participant and analyze the impact on environmental benefit and social welfare. The results show that cost-sharing can effectively improve product demand, which also supports society in obtaining higher benefits. Moreover, the 3PL tends to be shared by the retailer when the low-carbon investment cost of logistics is high and the investment cost of production is low. Both the manufacturer and the retailer prefer the other party to share the cost, but sharing it together can effectively alleviate free-rider behavior.

Abstract:Reducing carbon emissions is one of the key goals of contemporary supply chains and logistics. This paper aims to formulate a novel three-echelon (supplier-3PL-retailer) supply chain model comprising green technology investment, variable demand, variable lead time, a dynamic shipping strategy, and an option for vehicle selection. The demand function considers the product's freshness index and maximum lifetime, along with the availability of stocks. Besides, the delivery from the 3 PL to the retailer is dynamically determined based on previous shipment information. A green vehicle is selected using a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique based on q-alternatives with n-characteristics for the transportation process and mathematically we linked this selection process to traditional three echelon supply chain optimization problem. The results show that combining green investment with an appropriate dynamic shipping strategy by using a selected green vehicle reduces the supply chain's emissions and total integrated cost. Furthermore, reducing lead time without compromising other supply chain factors stimulates demand of customers and produces fewer emissions with a significant reduction in the total integrated cost. A real-case-based study shows the performance of the proposed model and method, followed by sensitivity analyses. The study illustrates that 47.744% of the carbon emissions in Scenario 1 and 47.53% in Scenario 2 are reduced when an emission reduction strategy is implemented and in terms of total integrated cost our proposed model could save 4.85% cost in Scenario 1 while 4.96% for Scenario 2, which is significant.

Abstract:This study examines the issue of cutting emissions by reducing shipment frequency within the framework of periodic inventory review system, which is one of the most popular inventory control systems in practice. We first formulate a benchmark model to represent the Business-As-Usual scenario then further develop this model into a carbon emission reduction model by adding a constraint that represents the emission reduction percentage target. Because of the non-convexity of general models, we simplify our two general models into special cases and develop their propositions analytically. We then conduct comprehensive numerical experiments on the general models. Our findings suggest that by reducing shipment frequency and adjusting inventory control decisions in a periodic review system, a firm could meet a moderate emission reduction target with limited impact on total cost. Our results also show that cost associated with emission reduction is related to unit backorder cost and leadtime, while the common belief that a higher unit holding cost would lead to higher cost for emission reduction is not supported. To the best of our knowledge, no prior research has yet addressed carbon reduction considerations within the framework of periodic review inventory systems. This study provides insights in understanding in what ways the adjustment of inventory control decisions could lead to reducing carbon emissions in logistics.

Abstract:In recent years, the rise of e‐commerce has led to the dominance of some platforms in the market. Both these platforms and third‐party logistics providers are now offering online logistics services. Under this context, the brand manufacturers face challenges of deciding whether to outsource their logistics needs to third‐party logistics service providers (LSPs), rely on the e‐commerce platform itself, or establish collaborative partnerships with them. The combination between the decision to outsource or cooperate and the choice of service providers yields four typical scenarios: outsourcing to the platform without cooperation (Case PB), outsourcing to the platform with cooperation (Case P), outsourcing to the LSP without cooperation (Case LB), and outsourcing to the LSP with cooperation (Case L). This paper proposes a game‐theoretic model to investigate the manufacturer's optimal selection of logistics mode. We examine the economic and environmental performances of four logistics modes, with a particular emphasis on the mutual benefits and costs shared between manufacturers and their logistics partners. Our results reveal that collaboration in sustainable logistics improvement leads to higher sustainability levels, augmented logistics fees, and increased sales volumes compared to noncollaborative strategies. Additionally, we find that outsourcing to the e‐commerce platform generally results in higher profits and superior environmental performance for manufacturers, contingent upon the sustainability enhancement being sufficiently effective. Empirical evidence from surveys and interviews with industry experts supports our theoretical findings, underscoring the critical role of collaboration in achieving both economic and environmental sustainability within the supply chain. This study contributes to the literature on logistics outsourcing by evaluating manufacturers' strategic decisions in selecting logistics modes and accentuates the importance of cooperation in advancing sustainable logistics practices.

Abstract:Carbon emission reduction is an important issue for sustainable development. The logistics industry is a key area for carbon emission reduction. The modern logistics supply chain includes logistics parks (fourth-party logistics, 4PL) and small, medium and micro logistics enterprises settled in the parks (third-party logistics, 3PL). Facing the pressure of the need for sustainable development, 3PL enterprises need to invest a lot of money in green transformation. However, 3PL enterprises are subject to serious financial constraints. In order to break the capital constraints, 3PL enterprises can raise funds from banks or from 4PL financing. Under the carbon quota policy, the government can regulate the 4PL or the 3PL. Therefore, this paper uses the Stackelberg game model to build a green financing strategy model of small and medium-sized logistics enterprises considering different supervision methods under carbon quotas, explores the optimal emission reduction decision-making process of small and medium-sized logistics enterprises, and provides solutions to the financing problems of small and medium-sized logistics enterprises in realizing sustainable development. The study found that the decisions of enterprises under different governmental supervision methods are affected by carbon quotas, and the government's supervision of 3PL is more conducive to carbon emission reduction; in this scenario, the 4PL financing strategy is more likely to be adopted compared with bank financing, because 4PL charge lower service fees, thus encouraging 3PL to increase their low-carbon investment. Finally, this paper puts forward two different carbon emission supervision methods and considers the green financing services of 4PL; this provides references for government supervision and the sustainable development strategies of logistics enterprises.

Abstract:As more attention is given to climate change and sustainable development in China, enterprises start to care about carbon emissions related to their supply chains. One important issue faced by an enterprise is to select a logistics provider who can provide a high-quality service with low carbon levels. To solve this issue, this paper proposes a selection criterion from the perspective of low carbon levels based on previous studies. The selection criterion consists of comprehensive strength, financial status, market competitiveness, development potential and low carbon level. Next, this paper applies a combined method of information entropy and grey correlation vlsekriterijumska optimizacija i kompromisno resenje (VIKOR) model to evaluate the proposed selection criterion. Subsequently, this paper took company S and its four logistics providers as a case study to check the applicability of our proposed selection method and to illustrate how to use it. Sensitivity analysis and comparative analysis are also conducted. Related managerial insights are also proposed based on the evaluation results. One finding of this paper is to establish a decision-making framework to evaluate logistics suppliers under the new background of 'emission peak and carbon neutrality'.

Abstract:In this study, we examine three approaches on the effects of controlling carbon emissions in transportation and inventory management. A Business-As-Usual Scenario Model (BAUSM), which delineates how carbon footprints from inventory storage and related transportation are captured, is firstly developed as the benchmark model. Based on BAUSM, we then develop three models with different carbon reduction approaches. The first one is constructed by adding a constraint to represent the percentage target of emission reduction. The second one integrates carbon taxes (or cap-and-trade scheme) into inventory management, and the last one takes both reduction target and carbon offset opportunities into account. Our work provides new analytical models, which integrate cost and emissions in transportation and storage under the framework of continuous inventory review (R, Q) policy for stochastic demand. Optimization algorithms are developed for solving models and related properties are investigated to examine the effects of carbon reduction and associated costs of three models. Abstract:In the closed-loop supply chain, many suppliers opt for self-recycling or entrust retailers to recycle. Under both recycling channels, the member responsible for recycling can undertake or outsource logistics services. This paper investigates how consumers’ environmental awareness and recycling cost-saving affect the optimal combination of recycling channel and logistics-service strategy. To this end, we mathematically formulate the supplier-led Stackelberg game theoretical-framework, and apply the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions for constrained optimization. We examine the optimal combination under the impact of consumers’ environmental awareness and recycling cost-saving on profits, environmental impact and social welfare, using numerical analysis. Results demonstrate that as consumers’ environmental awareness and recycling cost-saving remain at a higher level, the supplier and retailer will both achieve maximum profits when the supplier entrusts the retailer to recycle and the retailer undertakes the logistics services. Meanwhile, the third party will choose to be entrusted with services by the supplier, rather than the retailer. To improve supply-chain performance, the retailer should assume social responsibility to recycle and build the logistics-service system.

Abstract:The booming development of e-commerce has brought about rapid growth in the express delivery industry in China. However, urban express distribution is increasingly difficult and seriously affecting the traffic, safety, and environmental conditions of cities due to small, scattered end points, unreasonable allocation of resources, and seriously repeated resource waste. Therefore, there is an urgent need to solve the problems associated with the unreasonable resource allocation of express distribution. In the context of green logistics, a new mode of collaborative distribution based on intelligent end service station (IESS) is proposed. Following the measurement models of carbon emissions, before and after collaborative distributions are provided to prove the environmental benefits of the new mode. The influencing factors considered in the models are the average daily distribution volume, number of distribution sections, vehicle ownership of various types, and their capacity, use, fuel, and power consumption. To verify the models’ validity, we conduct an empirical study of five express enterprises in China and make a comparative analysis on the results, which show that the implementation of collaborative distribution can extremely reduce carbon emissions and improve the overall load rate of vehicles. Specially, the use of new energy vehicles can contribute significantly to energy conservation and emissions reduction.

Abstract:With the rapid evolution of modern information technologies, various advanced logistics distribution modes and strategies have been put forward in the market. All sectors of society, including the government, have begun to focus on energy issues. How to realize an ideal supply-demand matching of logistics resources is one of the common issues and objectives. To facilitate the development of this platform for both academic researchers and industrial practitioners, a green urban closed-loop logistics distribution network model is proposed in this paper by using the supply and demand data of a logistics service consumer to obtain the optimized solution that minimizes the emissions of greenhouse gases and the overall operational cost. This study aims to assist enterprises to effectively reduce carbon emissions in the current logistics distribution process. This paper uses a case study to validate the feasibility and practicality of the proposed green logistics distribution model to help end-users optimize their daily operations. The results show that there is a negative correlation between the cost and carbon emissions under the shortest distribution routes. However, this negative correlation is not absolute, for instance, certain changes in distribution cost may lead to positive correlation between the cost and carbon emissions. The multi-objective Pareto optimization results also show that the combination of vehicles, including electric vehicles and fuel vehicles, is able to effectively achieve a win-win scenario including carbon emissions and distribution costs, which could be ideal for enterprises. Furthermore, the proposed model could also provide guiding significance for enterprises to achieve low carbon distribution and for governments to promote a low carbon agenda in the urban logistics network distribution system.

Abstract:Logistics is critical in every company's supply chain (SC), and outsourcing helps businesses concentrate on their core competencies. Third-party logistics (3 PL) or logistics service providers (LSPs) assist businesses in cutting costs while improving performance, sustainability, and revenue. Logistics evaluation and LSPs choice are complicated and critical components of value delivery. This study aims to review logistics outsourcing literature to understand the trends, prospects, factors, and strategies used in logistics companies' outsourcing choices. This work examines the literature on LSPs selection published between 2010 and 2023. This paper uses VOSviewer (version 1.6.19) to visualize the relationships. Pricing, timely shipment, service quality, reliability, agility, technology, and consumer feedback are the most commonly utilized, whereas societal and environmental factors are seldom used. The study comprises journal publications, the year, selection criteria, and assessment methodologies. Numerous scholars have discovered and employed many critical selection criteria. Many investigators have also embraced multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodologies, and their fuzzy form is widely used. In conclusion, recommendations for theorists and managers, limits, and future directions for research are offered.

Abstract:Logistics plays important role in any firm’s supply chain. Outsourcing allows firms to focus on core business. Logistics outsourcing to third party logistics or logistics service providers (LSP) helps the companies to reduce costs, improve performance, sustainability, customer satisfaction and profitability. Logistics assessment and selection of LSP is a complex and important aspect of outsourcing decision. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of logistics outsourcing literature to provide an insight to the trend, opportunities, criteria and techniques adopted in logistics outsourcing decision-making. This paper is based on literature review of 62 research articles published related to LSP evaluation and selection during 2010-2020. The analysis includes publications in journals, year, selection criteria and evaluation methods. It has been found that 44 major selection criteria have been used by different authors but most commonly used are: price, on-time delivery, service quality, reliability, flexibility, equipment and technology, customer relationship, while environmental and social criteria are rarely adopted. It is also observed that multi criteria decision making (MCDM) methods have been adopted by majority of researchers wherein Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and their fuzzy variant are highly applied. Conclusion, implications for researchers and practitioners, limitations, and direction for future research are provided.

Abstract:In order to solve the optimization problem of logistics distribution system for fresh food, this paper provides a low-carbon and environmental protection point of view, based on the characteristics of perishable products, and combines with the overall optimization idea of cold chain logistics distribution network, where the green and low-carbon location-routing problem (LRP) model in cold chain logistics is developed with the minimum total costs as the objective function, which includes carbon emission costs. A hybrid genetic algorithm with heuristic rules is designed to solve the model, and an example is used to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm. Furthermore, the simulation results obtained by a practical numerical example show the applicability of the model while provide green and environmentally friendly location-distribution schemes for the cold chain logistics enterprise. Finally, carbon tax policies are introduced to analyze the impact of carbon tax on the total costs and carbon emissions, which proves that carbon tax policy can effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions in cold chain logistics network.

Low-Carbon Initiatives of Logistics Service Providers: The Perspective of Supply Chain Integration

Abstract:Logistics service providers (LSPs) are under tremendous pressure in the fight against global climate change. While existing research has examined the operational importance of LSPs in decarbonizing supply chains, the strategic perspective of LSPs on low carbon supply chains has not received enough attention. Motivated by the evolving role of LSPs from a service provider to a resource integrator in the supply chain, drawing on the relational view of inter-organizational competitive advantage, this paper focuses on LSPs’ low-carbon supply chain integration (SCI) and empirically investigates its drivers and outcomes. Data from 124 Chinese LSPs shows that LSPs’ corporate environmental responsibility and customer environmental requirement have positive relationships with LSPs’ low-carbon SCI, and that LSPs’ low-carbon SCI is positively related to LSPs’ environmental and financial performance. In addition, LSPs’ environmental performance is found to have a positive relationship with LSPs’ financial performance. These findings not only provide new insights for LSPs’ low-carbon supply chain initiatives, but also highlight the importance of SCI as a strategic approach in low-carbon supply chain management.
