Abstract:Software defined networking (SDN) is a style of computer networking that separates the control plane from the data plane,shifting the control plane to a centralized controller in order to achieve network flexibility and openness.The controller placement is a key prerequisite to successful SDN.The current study examines the hierarchically distributed control plane controller placement problem,utilizing a multi-level k-way switch partition algorithm to divide large scale network topology.We also fix the traditional SDN controller placement problem,changing zoning and intra-domain controller placement by reducing the edge-cut in order to lower the number of inter-domain flows.Simulation results show that the multilevel k-way switch partition algorithm can effectively reduce control flow overhead and flow set-up time,compared with the other traditional algorithms.

Abstract:In the Software-defined networking（SDN）,when multiple control domains are used in control services,the transient state problem can occur causing the service flow interruption when border switches are updated asynchronously. We analyze the uniqueness of this problem for SDN, and propose a light-weight protocol for safe reconfiguration of the border switches in order to improve the availability of the services running in SDN. Our solution is designed as a generic supervision layer added in the control plane to support different types of services. To demonstrate the benefits, we implement a prototype of Informationcentric networks（ICN） with the protocol, and conduct experiments using Planet Lab. The results show the ICN service can continuously serve high volume requests for contents despite the congestions built by the heavy background traffic. The performance gains in terms of the mean and standard deviation of the content retrieve delay are40.5% and 21.56%.

Abstract:In order to improve the scalability and reliability of Software Defined Networking (SDN), many studies use multiple controllers to constitute logically centralized control plane to provide load balancing and fail over. In this paper, we develop a flexible dormant multi-controller model based on the centralized multi-controller architecture. The dormant multi-controller model allows part of controllers to enter the dormant state under light traffic condition for saving system cost. Meanwhile, through queueing analysis, various performance measures of the system can be obtained. Moreover, we analyze the real traffic of China Education Network and use the results as the parameters of computer simulation and verify the effects of parameters on the system characteristics. Finally, a total expected cost function is established, and genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal values of various parameters to minimize system cost for the deployment decision making.
On the Cascading Failures of Multi-Controllers in Software Defined Networks

Abstract:In this paper, a potential threat to reliability of Software Defined Networking (SDN) is disclosed: the cascading failures of controllers. Current SDN designs have widely utilized multiple controllers and the load of a failed controller can be redistributed to the other controllers. However, simply utilizing multiple controllers cannot protect SDN networks from a single point of failure: the load of the controllers which carry the load of the failed controller can exceed the capacity of them, and then cascading failures of controllers will happen. In this article, at first we propose a model for such failures and present simulation results based on the model. Strategies for initial load balance and load redistribution after failure are designed to prevent such failures. The simulation result shows the strategies can significantly increase the resistance of SDN networks to cascading failures.

Abstract:Software defined networking is a new paradigm that separates the control plane from the data plane. To provide high scalability and reduce the controller load in a large-scale software defined network (SDN), a natural way is to deploy a cluster of distributed controllers so as to cooperatively manage the network. However, since each controller just manages a set of the connected (or associated) switches and usually holds the information of these switches (and connected links), it may result in controller load imbalance and link load imbalance. Thus, both controller load and link load should be optimized to achieve better QoS in SDNs. To this end, this paper tries to answer the following question: how to perform both controller load balancing and link load balancing in an SDN?We formulate the load-balancing routing for both links and controllers (LBR-LC) problem in an SDN, and prove its NP-hardness. A rounding-based algorithm is proposed to solve this problem, and the approximation performance is also analyzed. Moreover, we discuss the efficient mechanism for network status maintenance among distributed controllers. The extensive simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can reduce the maximum controller response time by 70% compared with the previous solution, while only increasing the maximum link load by 3%.

Abstract:The SDN architecture decouples the control plane and data plane, and multiple controllers are adopted to solve the scalability and reliability problem in SDN. However, most of the researches are focused on the control architecture and ignore the controller placement problem. Moreover, the mapping between the switches and controllers are static in current proposals, which will lead to the load unbalance of controllers under dynamic flow variations. In this paper, we define a new controller placement metric considering the node weight for a single domain at first, and then propose a dynamic switch migration algorithm to adapt to the flow dynamics and realize controller load balance in multiple SDN domains. Finally, a simple simulation platform is built to verify the proposed scheme.

Abstract:For the problem of multi-controller’s consensus in SDN,a quantitative approach was proposed,which provided a more accurate and effective method of sharing network view for the control layer's east-west extension.Firstly,the metrics of consensus,performance and availability between the controllers with the feature of SDN was provided,establishing the common model for quantitative research.Secondly,for the three typical questions in the research of multi-controller’s consensus,the condition to achieve its optimal value was explicated,which provided a reference for the configuration of consensus.Finally,to verify the validity of the quantitative approach by simulation,experimental results show that this approach can improve the performance and availability of the control layer in SDN effectively.

Abstract:Software-Defined Network (SDN) has emerged as an innovation framework with a separated control and data layer running upon Openflow protocol, and simplifies the deployment of the network. Though Software-Defined Network surely solves the specific problems that exist in traditional network, the evaluation on it is necessary. Currently, SDN-enable devices are rare and expensive. Existing simulators show a good performance in several aspects: realism, fidelity, arbitrary topology designing, and tools for debugging. So using software to simulate, monitor, and debug SDN is a relatively better and more economical approach. But the limitations on software are also noticeable when the focus shifts to a large-scale network designing, networks with multiple controllers, load simulation, and flexibility of testbed. Apart from those limitations, the debug information is still far from details expected. All those confine SDN experiments into a tiny space. To solve problems above, in this paper, we propose a scalable testbed framework for SDN simulations with multiple controllers, namely SFMC. Different from existing simulators, SFMC encompasses six modules. It ameliorates many functions as providing a clear structure, supporting several link types (including wireless link), extending the topology scalability into infinitive, enabling multiple controllers, and combining virtual and physical devices. We verify the performance of this testbed and show our experimental results from different scenarios, such as the flow simulation, WiFi environment, and multiple controllers.

Abstract:We consider a distributed Software Defined Networking (SDN) architecture adopting a cluster of multiple controllers to improve network performance and reliability. Differently from previous work, we focus on the control traffic exchanged among the controllers, in addition to the Openflow control traffic exchanged between controllers and switches. We develop an analytical model to estimate the reaction time perceived at the switches due to the inter-controller communications, based on the data-ownership model adopted in the cluster. We advocate a careful placement of the controllers, taking into account the two above kinds of control traffic. We evaluate, for some real ISP network topologies, the possible delay tradeoffs for the controllers placement problem.
Performance Modelling and Optimization of Controller Cluster Deployments in Software-Defined WAN

Abstract:As a novel network paradigm, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) decouples control logic from data forwarding devices, and introduces a separate control plane to manipulate substrate switches via southbound interface typically OpenFlow. This paradigm offers numerous benefits for wide area networks (WAN), like promoting application performance and reducing deployment costs, but gives rise to severe performance bottlenecks of logically centralized control plane. This paper is motivated to propose an accurate performance model of controller clusters in software-defined WAN. In particular, we model the packet-in message processing of a controller cluster as an M/M/n queue based on investigations into its packet-in message arrival process. Subsequently, we build an optimization model of controller cluster deployments, and solve the optimal number of controllers in the cluster based on the proof of the convexity of its objective function. Finally, our proposed queueing model is evaluated with the prevalent controller benchmark OFsuite_Performance by experiments. Experimental results indicate that our proposed model provides a more accurate approximation of controller cluster performance. Moreover, we obtain the optimal number of controllers in the cluster for different varying parameters, which offers guidelines for controller cluster deployments in software-defined WAN.

Abstract:Owing to powerful programmability, software defined networking (SDN) is well aligned with the requirements of NFV datacenters. Although the mainstream SDN frameworks can effectively respond to the requests of control plane, the load distribution among controllers is not balanced due to the request dynamics and request diversity. The existing solutions balance the load of control plane by migrating switches between controllers. However, these solutions are based on the binding between switches and controllers, so they are difficult to adapt to the dynamic and diverse requests. In this paper, we propose a new framework to decouple the binding. The new framework performs modular management for request queues. A complete request queue is provided for each type of request between each switch controller pair, so that the assignment between requests is independent of each other. Based on the proposed framework, we transform the request assignment problem into a variant of the scheduling problem in a Stochastic Processing Network (SPN), and propose a Maximum Pressure Policy (MPP) which can provide runtime guarantees on request throughput and response latency. To fit with the constraints inherent to large-scale deployment, we propose a distributed version of MPP, named DMPP. DMPP runs in local state on each switch and performs scheduling logic for batch requests. We implement a protosystem of our solution and evaluate it on the settings representing real-world scenarios. The results show that our solution can provide guarantees on request throughput and response latency, and significantly outperforms state-of-the-art solutions through a more efficient resource usage

Abstract:Controllers play a critical role in software-defined networking (SDN). However, existing single-controller SDN architectures are vulnerable to single-point failures, where a controller’s capacity can be saturated by flooded flow requests. In addition, due to the complicated interactions between applications and controllers, the flow setup latency is relatively large. To address the above security and performance issues of current SDN controllers, we propose distributed rule store (DRS), a new multi-controller architecture for SDNs. In DRS, the controller caches the flow rules calculated by applications, and distributes these rules to multiple controller instances. Each controller instance holds only a subset of all rules, and periodically checks the consistency of flow rules with each other. Requests from switches are distributed among multiple controllers, in order to mitigate controller capacity saturation attack. At the same time, when rules at one controller are maliciously modified, they can be detected and recovered in time. We implement DRS based on Floodlight and evaluate it with extensive emulation. The results show that DRS can effectively maintain a consistently distributed rule store, and at the same time can achieve a shorter flow setup time and a higher processing throughput, compared with ONOS and Floodlight.

Abstract:Software defined network (SDN) proposes the architecture of separating the control logic and forwarding devices in networks,which brings the open API for freely programing and makes the network management more fine.However,while the centralized control of SDN brings innovation and convenience for network applications,it also brings other problems,for example the reliability problem and the scalability problem simultaneously.For the problem of control plane's reliability in SDN,the method that voting deals with the same OpenFlow messages by combing multiple controllers to a quorum view is proposed to tolerate Byzantine faults,which is different from the current OpenFlow protocol.Firstly,we concretely explain the network structure,workflow and exception handling in the application of Byzantine fault-tolerance algorithm with the feature of SDN,and establish the analytical model of multi-controller's deployment.Secondly,we design a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem of multi-controller's deployment.Finally,to verify the fault tolerance method and deploy algorithms by simulation,experimental results show that this method can effectively deal with controllers' faults,improving the reliability of the control layer,but it will sacrifice the system's performance at some level.Meanwhile,the deployment algorithm can effectively reduce the transmission delay of processing OpenFlow request.

Abstract:Software defined network (SDN) is a newly emerging network architecture with the core concept of separating the control plane and data plane. Centralized controller is introduced to manage and configure network equipments to realize flexible control of network traffic and provide a good platform for application-oriented network innovation. It thus be able to improve network resource utilization, simplify network management, reduce operating cost, and promote innovation and evolution. Routing is always a major concern in network management. When SDN devices (e.g., OpenFlow switches) are introduced, routing becomes different. The flow table is usually implemented in expensive and power-hungry Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM), which is thus capacity-limited. How to optimize the network performance in the consideration of limited TCAM capacity is therefore significant. For example, multi-path routing (MPR) has been widely regarded as a promising method to promote the network performance. But MPR is at the expense of additional forwarding rule, imposing burden on the limited flow table. On the other hand, a logical centralized programmable controller manages the whole SDN by installing rules onto switches. It is widely regarded that one controller is restricted on both performance and scalability. To address these limitations, pioneering researchers advocate deploying multiple controllers in SDNs where each controller is in charge of a set of switches. This raises the switch-controller association problem on a switch shall be managed by which controller. In this chapter, we first investigate how to schedule MPR with joint consideration of forwarding rule placement. Then, we study a minimum cost switch-controller association (MC-SCA) problem on how to minimize the number of controllers needed in an SDN while guaranteeing the flow setup time.

Abstract:Decoupling of control and data plane in Software Define Networks (SDN) creates significant flexibility in network management. As networks are evolving into a complex multi-domain multi-layer architecture, traffic engineering across multiple domains and layers entails challenges for the control plane, especially when each separate administrative domain does not disclose their network topology and resource information. In this paper, we present a hierarchical controller design over multidomain and multi-layer networks, by adopting a root controller at the top layer. We allow to aggregate network topology and QoS information into a hierarchical Network Information Base (NIB) for the confidentiality concern. Then, we devise a communication protocol, which enables controllers at different layers and domains to work collaboratively on bandwidth allocation by reading to the hierarchical NIB. We also present an improved traffic engineering algorithm by considering bandwidth and delay simultaneously, to maximize the network utilization while respecting max-min fairness. Experiments on a 717-switches 5-domain network topology demonstrate that our proposal could drive the link utilization ratio to more than 85%.

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of Software defined network (SDN), designing a scalable SDN control plane becomes a critical problem. An effective approach to improving the scalability is to design distributed architecture of SDN control plane. However, how to evaluate the scalability of SDN control planes remains unexplored. In this paper, we propose a metric of scalability for SDN control planes, and study three typical SDN control plane structures, including centralized, decentralized and hierarchical architectures. We build performance models for response time, based on which we evaluate the scalability of these three structures. Furthermore, the comparison between different architectures are analyzed by mathematical methods. Numerical evaluations are also conducted to validate the conclusions drawn in this paper.

Abstract:Hybrid IP networks that use both control paradigms - distributed and centralized - promise the best of two worlds: programmability and agility of SDN, and reliability and fault tolerance of distributed routing protocols like OSPF. The common approaches follow a division of labor concept, where SDN controls prioritized traffic and OSPF assures care-free operation of best effort traffic. We propose SDN Partitioning, which establishes centralized control over the distributed routing protocol by partitioning the topology into sub-domains with SDN-enabled border nodes, such that OSPF's routing updates have to traverse SDN border nodes to reach neighboring sub-domains. This allows the central controller to modify how sub-domains view one another, which in turn allows to steer inter-sub-domain traffic. The degree of dynamic control against simplicity of OSPF can be trade off by adjusting the size of the sub-domains. This paper explains the technical requirements, presents a novel scheme for balanced topology partitioning, and provides the models for common network management tasks. Our performance evaluation shows that - already in its minimum configuration with two sub-domains - SDN Partitioning provides significant improvements in all respects compared to legacy routing protocols, whereas smaller sub-domains provide network control capabilities comparable to full SDN deployment.

Abstract:Current data centers often employ SDNs (Software-Defined Networks) that are layered in most cases. However, information overwhelming has been a limitation to SDN deployment. We present a management model for data center networks. In this approach, regional networks on lower layers will be aggregated and viewed as single switches to upper layers. Management information will be divided into three parts, which can be seen by network managers, regional controllers and tenants, respectively.

Abstract:Software Defined Networking (SDN) provides flexibility and programmability for network management by using a layered structure composed of data plane, control plane, and application plane. A key enabling technique for the sustainability of SDN-based network infrastructure is the modeling of power consumed by SDN control planes. However, power modeling of control planes is not extensively investigated yet, and no generic methods have been developed for performance and power comparison of sustainable SDN control planes. In this paper, we propose analytical performance and power models for different network controllers by using queuing theory, and design a generic framework for performance and power evaluation of different sustainable SDN control planes. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed solution can precisely model the power and performance of the concerned SDN control planes such that different control planes can be benchmarked under a general framework, which enables the identification of suitable control planes for various SDN network applications.
