Abstract:The oxy-substituted alkoxy radicals have attracted wide attention due to the increasing application of oxygenated volatile organic compounds as fuel additives and solvents. Direct detection of these intermediate radicals is desired for measuring the reaction rate and investigating the oxidation mechanism of organic compounds in the atmosphere. A charge-transfer excited state induced by CH3O substitution was identified in our previous study of 3-methoxy-1-propoxy radical [Xue, J. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2021, 23, 2586]. As the C-C bonds of chain alkoxy radicals can freely rotate, further studies are needed to understand the mechanism of this long-range charge-transfer effect. In this work, vibrational-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra of 3- and 4-methoxycyclohexoxy radicals were obtained under jet-cooled conditions. A large red-shift of ∼454 cm-1 of the origin band was observed when the CH3O substituent moved from the δ site to the γ site of the cyclohexoxy radical. The LIF spectra are assigned to 3-cis (e, e) and 4-trans (e, e) conformers, respectively, with the assistance of structural optimization and electron excitation studies conducted at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Natural transition orbital analysis reveals that the intramolecular charge transfer from the C-O-C p orbital to the radical O p orbital in 3-methoxycyclohexoxy has a strong effect on the radical CO σ → O p excitation and hence results in a spectral change. On the other hand, the spectral effect of CH3O substitution almost vanishes at δ carbon. The results propose a through-bond interaction between CH3O and radical CO groups.

Abstract:We present here a synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization study of the simplest alkoxy radical, CH3O, a key reaction intermediate in atmospheric and combustion chemistry. A microwave discharge fast flow tube connected to a molecular beam sampling system is employed as a chemical reactor to initiate reactions and generate radicals. The CH3O+ cation from direct ionization of the CH3O radical is detected successfully in the photoionization mass spectrum close to its ionization threshold. In addition, after identifying and removing the contribution of the 13C-isotopic formaldehyde H213CO with the same isobaric mass m/z = 31, the high-resolution threshold photoelectron spectrum of CH3O is obtained and assigned with the aid of calculated Franck-Condon factors. The adiabatic ionization energy of CH3O is determined at 10.701 eV with an accuracy of 0.005 eV.
Measurement of OH Radicals Using Off-Axis Integrated Output Spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) at 2.8 &Amp;#181;m

Abstract:The hydroxyl (OH) free radical plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry due to its high reactivity with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and trace species (CH4, CO, SO2, etc) [1]. Due to its very short lifetime (~1 s or less) and very low concentration in the atmosphere (in the order of 106 cm-3), in situ and direct measurement of OH concentration in the atmosphere is challenging [2]. We report in this paper our recent work on developing a compact spectroscopic instrument based on off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) [3] for optical monitoring of OH radicals. In the present work, OH radicals of ~1012 OH radicals/cm3 were generated from continue micro-wave discharge at 2.45 GHz of water vapor at low pressure (0.2-1 mbar), and were used as sample for validation of the developed OA-ICOS approaches. Two experimental approaches are designed for the measurements of OH radicals: (1) OA-ICOS [4] and wavelength modulation enhanced OA-ICOS (WM OA-ICOS) [5]. A distributed feedback (DFB) laser operating at 2.8 µm was employed for probing the Q (1.5e) and Q (1.5f) double-line transitions of the 2Π3/2state at 3568.52382 and 3568.41693 cm-1, respectively. A 1s detection limit of ~2.7×1010 cm-3 was obtained for an averaging time of 125 s using a simple OA-ICOS scheme. This limit of detection is further improved by a factor of 3.4 using a WM OA-ICOS approach. The experimental detail and the preliminary results will be presented and discussed. Acknowledgments. Abstract:The reaction mechanism for o-xylene with OH radical and 0, was studied by density functional theory (DFT) method. The geometries of the reactants, intermediates, transition states, and products were optimized at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The corresponding vibration frequencies were calculated at the same level. The single-point calculations for all the stationary points were carried out at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,2pd) level using the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) optimized geometries. Reaction energies for the formation of the aromatic intermediate radicals have been obtained to determine their relative stability and reversibility, and their activation barriers have been analyzed to assess the energetically favorable pathways to propagate the o-xylene oxidation. The results of the theoretical study indicate that OH addition to o-xylene forms ipso, meta, and para isomers of o-xylene-OH adducts, and the ipso o-xylene adduct is the most stable among these isomers. Oxygen is expected to add to the oxylene-OH adducts forming o-xylene peroxy radicals. And subsequent ring closure of the peroxyl radicals to form bicyclic radicals. With relatively low barriers, isomerization of the o-xylene bicyclic radicals to more stable epoxide radicals likely occurs, competing with O-2 addition to form bicyclic peroxy radicals. The study provides thermochemical data for assessment of the photochemical production potential of ozone and formation of toxic products and secondary organic aerosol from o-xylene photooxidation. Abstract:Criegee intermediates, derived from ozonolysis of alkenes and recognized as key species in the production of nonphotolytic free radicals, play a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry. Here, we present a spectrometer based on synchronized two-color time-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy, enabling simultaneous spectral acquisitions in two molecular fingerprint regions near 2.9 and 7.8 μm. Upon flash photolysis of CH2I2/O2/N2 gas mixtures, multiple reaction species, involving the simplest Criegee intermediates (CH2OO), formaldehyde (CH2O), hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxy (HO2) radicals are simultaneously detected with microsecond time resolution. The concentration of each molecule can be determined based on high-resolution rovibrational absorption spectroscopy. With quantitative detection and simulation of temporal concentration profiles of the targeted molecules at various conditions, the underlying reaction mechanisms and pathways related to the formation of the HOx radicals, which can be generated from decomposition of initially energized and vibrationally excited Criegee intermediates, are explored. Abstract:We present a study of the self-reaction of C2H5O2 and its cross-reaction with HO2 with VUV photoionization mass spectrometry. Hefei synchrotron radiation and a krypton discharge lamp are combined to ionize species. Key products including CH3CHO, C2H5OH, C2H5O and C2H5OOH formed from the reactions are directly observed and confirmed. In particular, the radical product C2H5O from the self-reaction is detected for the first time. The ionization energies of C2H5O and C2H5OOH are determined and the Franck-Condon factors are calculated to fit the photoionization spectra. Moreover, kinetic experiments are performed to confirm the products' assignment and provide detailed reaction mechanism.

Abstract:The exploration of Venus has received much attention in the past and will keep growing due to the starting of the NASA DAVINCI project. To explain the extremely low O2:CO ratio observed in Venus' atmosphere, a chlorine-initiated CO oxidation catalytic cycle has been proposed. However, relevant studies on the key intermediates, such as the peroxychloroformyl radical (ClC(O)OO), are rare. In this study, the ClC(O)OO radical was observed using Fourier-Transform Microwave (FTMW) spectroscopy under the supersonic expansion condition. Two conformers, trans-ClC(O)OO and cis-ClC(O)OO, and their chlorine isotopologues were detected. The molecular constants including the fine and hyperfine constants, were determined. Based on the experimental and the ab initio calculations, the unpaired electron is mostly located at the terminal oxygen atom, supported by the small magnetic hyperfine constants of chlorine. In addition, the angles between the Cl–C bond and the a-axis of the trans-35ClC(O)OO and trans-37ClC(O)OO are similar, but these angles are different for cis-ClC(O)OO, making the quadrupole coupling tensors in the inertial axes disagree with the ratio of the quadrupole moments of 35Cl and 37Cl. Finally, we concluded that the ClC(O)OO radicals should behave similarly to other peroxyl radicals, as assumed in the current photochemical model of Venus.

Abstract:Organic peroxy radicals (RO2), derived from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation by hydroxyl radical (OH), ozone (O3), and nitrate radical (NO3) etc., play an important role in atmospheric chemistry. Direct measurements of speciated RO2 are challenging but necessary for understanding their atmospheric fate and impact. In this study, we introduce a newly developed Proton Transfer Reaction measurement method (PTR3-TOF) using NH4+ as the ion source to measure the multifunctional complex RO2 and related reactive oxidation products based on the principle of chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS). We establish a calibration system that combines a home-built OH calibration source with various standard VOC gases, enabling to quantify both RO2 radicals and closed-shell species with a detection limit of about 1.6×107 molecule cm-3 (2σ, 60 s) and an uncertainty of 10%. This technique is first applied to study the gas-phase ozonolysis of cyclohexene in our laboratory, with experiments carried out using the O3 OFR mode in a PAM-OFR system under near-real atmosphere conditions. As a consequence, a total of 30 cyclohexene ozonolysis reaction products are detected in the first step of cyclohexene ozonolysis, including 9 types of RO2 radicals and 21 types of closed-shell species, with oxygen atoms ranging from 1 to 8. We also establish a mechanistic model for the first-generation products of ozonolysis of cyclohexene, and the simulation and measurement results agree within a factor of 2-3 for the respective formulas except for some differences in a few species.

Abstract:This study reports on the first continuous measurements of ambient OH and HO2 radicals at a suburban site in Chengdu, Southwest China, which were collected during 2019 as part of a comprehensive field campaign 'CompreHensive field experiment to explOre the photochemical Ozone formation mechaniSm in summEr - 2019 (CHOOSE-2019)'. The mean concentrations (11:00-15:00) of the observed OH and HO2 radicals were 9.5 x 10(6) and 9.0 x 10(8) cm(3), respectively. To investigate the state-of-the-art chemical mechanism of radical, closure experiments were conducted with a box model, in which the RACM2 mechanism updated with the latest isoprene chemistry (RACM2-LIM1) was used. In the base run, OH radicals were underestimated by the model for the low-NO regime, which was likely due to the missing OH recycling. However, good agreement between the observed and modeled OH concentrations was achieved when an additional species X (equivalent to 0.25 ppb of NO mixing ratio) from one new OH regeneration cycle (RO2 + X -> HO2, HO2 + X -> OH) was added into the model. Additionally, in the base run, the model could reproduce the observed HO2 concentrations. Discrepancies in the observed and modeled HO2 concentrations were found in the sensitivity runs with HO2 heterogeneous uptake, indicating that the impact of the uptake may be less significant in Chengdu because of the relatively low aerosol concentrations. The ROx (= OH - HO2 + RO2) primary source was dominated by photolysis reactions, in which HONO, O-3, and HCHO photolysis accounted for 34%,19%, and 23% during the daytime, respectively. The efficiency of radical cycling was quantified by the radical chain length, which was determined by the NO to NO2 ratio successfully. The parameterization of the radical chain length may be very useful for the further determinations of radical recycling. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Microwave Spectroscopy of Chiral Astrochemical Candidate Vinyloxirane: The Missing Gauche Conformer

Abstract:The recent detection of a chiral molecule, propylene oxide, in the interstellar medium provides impetus for investigation of related analogues as candidates for discovery of a second chiral species. Vinyloxirane (VO) shares many of the characteristics of propylene oxide that favored its remote detection such as modest size, appreciable dipole moment and modest adsorption to water ice. The microwave spectrum of vinyloxirane at room temperature has been studied in the 18 - 26 GHz region. Rotational transitions of the previously undetected gauche-1 conformer have been assigned and fitted. The quantum number range of anti conformer transitions has been greatly expanded, providing improved molecular constants. Vibrational satellite transitions were assigned and fitted for the lowest frequency ν27 torsion mode, for 2ν27, and for the ν26 C=CC bend of anti VO, along with ν27 satellites of gauche-1. The rovibrational analyses were assisted by anharmonic vibrational calculations at B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-PVTZ, B2PLYPD3/cc-pVTZ, and DSDPBEP86/cc-pVTZ levels. Experimental peak intensities provide a population ratio Ngauche-1/Nanti of 0.36 ± 0.06, corresponding to a Gibbs free energy difference of 2.5 ± 0.4 kJ mol-1 in favor of the anti conformer, in agreement with the density functional theory results. In the gauche-1 conformer, the torsional angle between vinyl group and oxirane ring, τC=CCM, is optimized at -35° to favor an intramolecular CvinylH11...O interaction. The gauche-2 conformer with τC=CCM of + 74° suffers from CvinylH11...HCcyclopropyl repulsion so that it is calculated to be 8-9 kJ mol-1 higher than gauche-1. Reinterpretation of earlier Raman spectra suggests that the gauche-2 conformer had not been observed as reported.

Abstract:The absorption spectra and the kinetics of the self-reactions of small organic peroxyl radicals (RO2, with R = CH3, C2H5 and C3H7) have been investigated in aqueous solution. Laser-based radical generation and time-resolved broadband-diode array UV spectroscopy in a flow system were applied in this study. Absolute decadic absorption coefficients for the three radicals are given in intervals of 2 nm and the results of a study of the temperature dependence of their recombination reactions are presented.

Abstract:The oxidation mechanism of cyclohexylmethyl radical (cy-C6H11CH2), a prototypical alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl radical, has been investigated by high level quantum chemical calculations, and the chemical kinetics was studied by the variational transition state theory and the Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus/Master-Equation theory. The relationship between molecular structure and reactivity was explored for the cyclohexylmethyl peroxy radical, which was also compared with chain-like alkyl peroxy radicals. It is shown that the 1,5 H-shift reaction is more competitive than the 1,6 H-shift for the cy-C6H11CH2OO radical, and at high temperatures the concerted elimination reaction channel forming HO2 and methylenecyclohexane bimolecular products becomes more important. Comparing with cyclohexane, the presence of a methyl group in cyclic alkanes prompts the 1,5-H shift of the corresponding peroxy radical and accelerates the overall low temperature chain branching reaction rate. The current study extends kinetic data involved in cy-C6H11CH2 oxidation including cy-C6H11CH2 and O2 recombination, subsequent isomerization and dissociation of the cy-C6H11CH2OO radical over wide pressure and temperature range.

However, due to the low concentrations in the atmosphere(similar to 10(6) molecule/cm(3)), high reactivity, and very short lifetime(<1 s), current techniques that can be successfully employed for tropospheric OH measurement are extremely limited. Therefore, there is a strong driving force for the development of new techniques. Off-axis Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy(OA-ICOS) based on Lambert-Beer law can offer an ultra-long optical pathlength on the order of kilometers utilizing a high-finesse optical resonator with a limited optical base length. In addition, the off-axis paths through optical cavity can actively excite higher-order transverse modes and effectively reduce the influence of cavity mode fluctuation. These advantages make it a powerful tool for sensitive measurement of OH radical. We reported the development of a mid-infrared OA-ICOS experimental setup. A room temperature continuous-wave distributed feedback diode laser emitting at 2.8 mu m was used as the probe laser. The Q(1.5e) transition line of OH radical located at 3 568.52 cm(-1) was selected for detection. The integrated cavity consisted of two 25.4-mm diameter high-reflectivity dielectrically coated plano-concave mirrors (1 m radius of curvature) separated by a distance of 35.8 cm. The measured effective reflectivity of the cavity mirrors was 0.999 3, corresponding to the effective optical path of 512 m. In this mid-infrared OA-ICOS system, the amplified spontaneous emission of the distributed feedback laser, which is usually on the order of nanowatts and is a kind of unwanted broadband radiation outside the highly reflective band of the cavity mirrors, directly passed through the cavity without resonating. This amplified spontaneous emission was received by the detector together with the weak valid absorption signal, causing interference in measurement. It was found that the absorption was about 70 times underestimated due to the amplified spontaneous emission, which needs to be effectively avoided. To reduce the 1/ f noise and improve the sensitivity of this system, wavelength modulation spectroscopy was applied. The laser current was swept and modulated by a triangle wave and a sinusoidal wave around the absorption peak to obtain the second harmonic(2f) signals. The sample of OH radical were generated by the reaction of H2O and O(1D) produced by O-3 photolysis. The concentration of OH in the cavity was determined by a reference absorption line of H2O in the same spectral region at 3 568.55 cm(-1) whose concentration could be calculated by direct absorption spectroscopy. The strong linear relationship (correlation coefficient of 0.999 4)between 2f signals and concentrations was exhibited. Based on a typical spectrum measured under an OH concentration of 4.84x109 molecule/cm(3) and 100 s data acquisition time, the noise level was evaluated by standard deviation from the non-absorption wing, giving a signal-to-noise ratio of about 38. From these results, the detection limit of OH radical was determined to be 1.2x 10(8) molecules/cm(3)(1s). The performance of this spectrometer can be further improved by reducing the residual cavity resonances, using higher reflectivity cavity mirrors to increase the absorption path length and signal intensity, re-injecting to the cavity via a third mirror and improving the effective gain of the detector. In particular, the Wavelength Modulation Off-axis Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy (WM-OAICOS) technique in the mid-infrared provides a new direct spectral method for OH radical detection. The successful combination of OA-ICOS and wavelength modulation spectroscopy means that OA-ICOS also can be combined further with other modulation technologies, such as frequency modulation spectroscopy, to achieve shot-noise limited detection.
Mechanistic Insight into Superoxide Radical-Mediated Degradation of Carbon Tetrachloride in Aqueous Solution: an in Situ Spectroscopic and Computational Study

Abstract:Contemporary studies emphasize that superoxide radical (O-2(center dot-)) exhibits the potential to degrade organic contaminants, but practical application of this radical in engineered waters require an in-depth understanding of its kinetic profiles in a quantitative way. Here, we developed, for the first time, a convenient and reliable approach to generate micromolar level O-2(center dot-) in aqueous solution by photolysis of formate and H2O2. The presence of O-2(center dot-) was confirmed by comparing the UV spectra under pulse radiolysis and chromogenic reaction. We then constructed an in situ long-path spectroscopy to investigate the kinetics and mechanisms of O(2)(center dot-)mediated degradation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), a halogenated model contaminant. The rate constant for the reaction of O-2(center dot-) and CCl4 was determined to be 478 M-1 s(-1). In addition, we employed the transition state theory to model the reaction rate constants. Both results show that O center dot-2 exhibited low reactivity towards CCl4 with bimolecular rate constant lower by at least one order of magnitude than those radicals generated in typical advanced oxidation processes such as hydroxyl and sulfate radicals. Our results also indicate that nucleophilic substitution is the major pathway, and the solvation effect plays an important role in the reaction. The complementary experimental and theoretical approaches provide a mechanistic basis for better understanding aqueous-phase O-2(center dot-) chemistry and a holistic evaluation on the application of O-2(center dot-) for the degradation of organic contaminants of emerging concern.
Spectroscopic characterization of two peroxyl radicals during the O2-oxidation of the methylthio radical

Abstract:The atmospheric oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) yields sulfuric acid and methane sulfonic acid (MSA), which are key precursors to new particles formed via homogeneous nucleation and further cluster growth in air masses. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies have suggested that the oxidation of DMS involves the formation of the methylthio radical (CH3S•), followed by its O2-oxidation reaction via the intermediacy of free radicals CH3SOx• (x = 1-4). Therefore, capturing these transient radicals and disclosing their reactivity are of vital importance in understanding the complex mechanism. Here, we report an optimized method for efficient gas-phase generation of CH3S• through flash pyrolysis of S-nitrosothiol CH3SNO, enabling us to study the O2-oxidation of CH3S• by combining matrix-isolation spectroscopy (IR and UV-vis) with quantum chemical computations at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV(X + d)Z (X = D and T) level of theory. As the key intermediate for the initial oxidation of CH3S•, the peroxyl radical CH3SOO• forms by reacting with O2. Upon irradiation at 830 nm, CH3SOO• undergoes isomerization to the sulfonyl radical CH3SO2• in cryogenic matrixes (Ar, Ne, and N2), and the latter can further combine with O2 to yield another peroxyl radical CH3S(O)2OO• upon further irradiation at 440 nm. Subsequent UV-light irradiation (266 nm) causes dissociation of CH3S(O)2OO• to CH3SO2•, CH2O, SO2, and SO3. The IR spectroscopic identification of the two peroxyl radicals CH3SOO• and CH3S(O)2OO• is also supported by 18O- and 13C-isotope labeling experiments.

Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (OClO) is an important indicator for Cl-activation. The monitoring of OClO appears to be crucial for understanding the chemistry of Cl-initialed oxidation and its impact on air quality in polluted coastal regions and industrialized areas. We report the development of a Xe arc lamp based near-ultraviolet (335-375 nm) incoherent broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS) spectrometer for quantitative assessment of OClO in an atmospheric simulation chamber. The important intermediate compound CH2O, and other key atmospheric trace species (NO2) were also simultaneously measured. The instrumental performance shows a strong potential of this kind of IBBCEAS instrument for field and laboratory studies of atmospheric halogen chemistry.

Abstract:The absolute absorption cross-section of the ethyl peroxy radical C2H5O2 in the Ã←X˜ electronic transition with the peak wavelength at 7596 cm−1 has been determined by the method of dual wavelengths time resolved continuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy. C2H5O2 radicals were generated from pulsed 351 nm photolysis of C2H6/Cl2 mixture in presence of 100 Torr O2 at T = 295 K. C2H5O2 radicals were detected on one of the CRDS paths. Two methods have been applied for the determination of the C2H5O2 absorption cross-section: (i) based on Cl-atoms being converted alternatively to either C2H5O2 by adding C2H6 or to hydro peroxy radicals, HO2, by adding CH3OH to the mixture, whereby HO2 was reliably quantified on the second CRDS path in the 2ν1 vibrational overtone at 6638.2 cm−1 (ii) based on the reaction of C2H5O2 with HO2, measured under either excess HO2 or under excess C2H5O2 concentration. Both methods lead to the same peak absorption cross-section for C2H5O2 at 7596 cm−1 of σ = (1.0 ± 0.2) × 10−20 cm2. The rate constant for the cross reaction between of C2H5O2 and HO2 has been measured to be (6.2 ± 1.5) × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1.
