Abstract:The outbreak of highly pathogenic microorganisms such as coronavirus-19 and Bacillus anthracis (a common biological warfare agent) continues to be a major global concern. Photocatalytic disinfection is increasingly expected to meet the critical demand for human living environment biodecontamination in a safe and sustainable way. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring bandstructure diversity as well as shortened bulk-to-surface migration distance, are an emerging class of photoresponsive disinfectants. Different from currently popularized building blocks optimization in single photoactive MOF phase, in this study the concept of complementary MOF implementation was applied for biocidal efficiency and broad-spectrum sensitivity enhancement. Thanks to the broadband light absorption, cascade catalytic Fenton reaction and additional photothermal effect, the core-shell arranged MOFs (prussian blue and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) demonstrate superiority over its individual building elements and anatase TiO 2 in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria inactivation. Significantly, the infectivity of Bacillus anthracis and murine coronavirus in droplets on surface of MOF composite-coated filter could be greatly reduced within few minutes of solar exposure, indicative of the great potential of MOF composites toward life-threatening microbial infection prevention.
