Abstract:Underwater imaging is a challenging topic in the field of photography due to the absorption and scattering of light by water, which reduces the imaging distance and visibility. In this paper, the effects of seawater on the quality of ghost imaging (GI) are analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Our results indicate that GI technique, to a certain extent, can achieve better imaging quality than conventional imaging, especially under weak light condition in seawater environments. The compressed sensing ghost imaging (CSGI) can further enhance the visibility of ghost images with fewer measurements. Therefore, ghost imaging has the potential of realizing longer-distance underwater imaging, owing to its robustness against seawater environmental disturbance.

Abstract:Underwater ghost imaging is an effective means of underwater detection. In this paper, a theoretical and experimental study of underwater ghost imaging is carried out by combining the description of underwater optical field transmission with the inherent optical parameters of the water body. This paper utilizes the Wells model and the approximate S-S scattering phase function to create a model for optical transmission underwater. The second-order Glauber function of the optical field is then employed to analyze the scattering field's degradation during the transmission process. This analysis is used to evaluate the impact of the water body on ghost imaging. The simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed underwater ghost imaging model can better describe the degradation effect of water bodies on ghost imaging. A series of experiments comparing underwater ghost imaging at different detection distances are also carried out in this paper. In the experiments, cooperative targets can be imaged up to 65.2m (9.3AL, at attenuation coefficient c=0.1426m-1 and the scattering coefficient b=0.052m-1) and non-cooperative targets up to 41.2m (6.4AL, at c=0.1569m-1 and b=0.081m-1) . By equating the experimental maximum imaged attenuation length for cooperative targets to Jerlov-I water (b=0.002m-1 and a=0.046m-1), the system will have a maximum imaging distance of 193m. Underwater ghost imaging is expected to achieve longer-range imaging by optimizing the system emission energy and detection sensitivity.

Abstract:Theoretically, the effect of scattering and absorption in the detected light path on the computational ghost imaging can approximately equal the multiplicative noise, and it can be eliminated. The impulse response function model of the point light source in a smoke screen was established using the Monte Carlo method. The influence of the smoke screen in different states on imaging was analyzed, and the feasibility of penetrating smoke imaging was discussed. Results show that when the intrinsic noise N-i = 0, the effect of the scattering medium on the resulting imaging can be deemed negligible. Moreover, the applicable scene of the computational ghost imaging technology in a smoke medium was summarized. The research has important reference significance for computational correlation imaging applications.

Abstract:The underwater environment is extremely complex and variable, which makes it difficult for underwater robots detecting or recognizing surroundings using images acquired with cameras. Ghost imaging as a new imaging technique has attracted much attention due to its special physical properties and potential for imaging of objects in optically harsh or noisy environments. In this work, we experimentally study three categories of image reconstruction methods of ghost imaging for objects of different transmittance. For high-transmittance objects, the differential ghost imaging is more efficient than traditional ghost imaging. However, for low-transmittance objects, the reconstructed images using traditional ghost imaging and differential ghost imaging algorithms are both exceedingly blurred and cannot be improved by increasing the number of measurements. A compressive sensing method named augmented Lagrangian and alternating direction algorithm (TVAL3) is proposed to reduce the background noise imposed by the low-transmittance. Experimental results show that compressive ghost imaging can dramatically subtract the background noise and enhance the contrast of the image. The relationship between the quality of the reconstructed image and the complexity of object itself is also discussed.

Abstract:Over the past several years, ghost imaging has made remarkable achievements in poor optical conditions, including underwater imaging works. This study describes the interactions between environmental interference and experimental results of ghost imaging applied to underwater scenarios deduced by mathematical processes and related researches findings. In this paper, the causes of notable optical influences: absorption, scattering, and turbulence are firstly presented in the form of statistical mathematics; Sequentially, at the level of complex amplitude in wave optics, the experimental principle: second-order correlation are calculated as a basic for subsequent discussion in physical illustration; further, mainly from existing researches, the text expounds the specific influence of environmental and experimental factors on the imaging quality with above-mentioned models.

Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) is an imaging method that reconstructs object information via light-intensity correlation measurements. The unconventional imaging mechanism of GI makes it suitable for imaging in scattering medium, for instance, turbid liquid, biological tissues, etc. However, the strong background noise in the reconstructed images is still the bottleneck problems. In this paper, we focus on the improvements of the reconstructions in underwater GI and propose a speckle decomposition and fusion method for suppressing the noise. The approach utilized computational ghost imaging framework and dictionary learning to acquire high- and low-frequency components that are better suited for image feature-based reconstruction. Furthermore, once the suitable threshold has been established, the speckles captured from the reference path are decomposed using the Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT). The acquired high- and low-frequency are then correlated with the overall optical intensity that captured by the bucket detectors. Ultimately, a multi-scale inverse NSCT transformation is employed to produce the final fusion-reconstructed image. The quantitative evaluation of the reconstructed image quality was conducted. In contrast to previous methodologies, the proposed method offers significant enhancements of the underwater GI imaging quality.

Abstract:Nowadays the world has entered into the digital age, in which the data analysis and visualization have become more and more important. In analogy to imaging the real object, we demonstrate that the computational ghost imaging can image the digital data to show their characteristics, such as periodicity. Furthermore, our experimental results show that the use of optical imaging methods to analyse data exhibits unique advantages, especially in anti-interference. The data analysis with computational ghost imaging can be well performed against strong noise, random amplitude and phase changes in the binarized signals. Such robust data data analysis and imaging has an important application prospect in big data analysis, meteorology, astronomy, economics and many other fields.

Abstract:Obtaining a clear image of the underwater environment with classical imaging methods is still a challenging task due to the large amounts of noise caused by absorption and scattering nature of water and complex light interactions. By contrast, ghost imaging (GI) is a second-order correlation imaging technique, which has the disturbance-free ability in severe backscattering and high absorption conditions. In this paper, a physical model of three-dimensional ghost imaging (3DGI) through turbid water was set up based on laser detection and ranging (LADAR) and GI system, which considering the light-field transmission, the effects of absorption and scattering of water and the interaction between light field. Then the quality of 3DGI with different turbid water conditions and over different propagation distances was investigated by numerical calculation. The results show that the proposed 3DGI scheme is capable to reconstruct the object of long-distance in highly turbid underwater environments, and the reconstruction quality is closely related to the turbidity of the water and transmission distance. This work provides a reference to underwater 3DGI application, and maybe a better alternative strategy for underwater imaging.

Abstract:In underwater computational ghost imaging, the presence of scattering and absorption introduces significant degradation, leading to blurring and distortion of illuminating patterns. This work proposes an anti-degradation underwater computational ghost imaging (AUGI) method based on the physical degradation model of underwater forward degradation caused by scattering and absorption. Through AUGI, we can enhance the quality of a reconstructed image by about 10% compared to differential ghost imaging (DGI) as measured by peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM), as a result of simulations. We experimentally demonstrate the superior effectiveness of this method in the artificial submarine environment. Additionally, benefitting from its simplicity, this method is expected to be applied across a wide range of underwater ghost imaging applications.

Abstract:Underwater ghost imaging LiDAR is an effective method of underwater detection. In this research, theoretical and experimental investigations were conducted on underwater ghost imaging, combining the underwater optical field transmission model with the inherent optical parameters of a water body. In addition, the Wells model and the approximate Sahu-Shanmugam scattering phase function were used to create a model for underwater optical transmission. The second-order Glauber function of the optical field was then employed to analyze the scattering field degradation during the transmission process. The simulation and experimental results verified that the proposed underwater model could better reveal the degrading effect of a water body on ghost imaging. A further series of experiments comparing underwater ghost imaging at different detection distances was also conducted. In the experimental system, gated photomultiplier tube (PMT) was used to filter out the peak of backscattering, allowing a larger gain to be set for longer-range detection of the target. The laser with a central wavelength of 532 nm was operated at a frequency of 2 KHz, with a single pulse energy of 2 mJ, a pulse width of 10 ns. High-reflective targets were imaged up to 65.2 m (9.3 attenuation lengths (ALs), attenuation coefficient c = 0.1426 m-1, and scattering coefficient b = 0.052 m-1) and diffuse-reflection targets up to 41.2 m (6.4 ALs, c = 0.1569 m-1, and b = 0.081 m-1). For the Jerlov-I (c = 0.048 m-1 and b = 0.002 m-1) water body, the experimentally obtained maximum detection distance of 9.3 ALs can be equivalent to 193.7 m under the same optical system conditions.

Abstract:With the increasingly urgent demand for marine research and development, optical imaging technology remains crucial for underwater close-range information detection. However, the inherent obstacles of light transmission in strongly attenuating environments constitute a bottleneck that restricts the development of traditional optical imaging technology. Underwater computational imaging has emerged gradually, leveraging its cross-disciplinary advantages. It deeply couples optical system design with signal calculation and processing and has a high utilization rate of focusing information. It can achieve qualitative breakthroughs in imaging resolution, scale, dimension, and hardware convenience. However, existing work is mostly limited to the extension of free-space computational imaging techniques to underwater environments, lacking systematic research on common needs and key technologies. Therefore, it is essential to refine the connotation and advantages of underwater computational imaging technology, especially in combination with highly complex and nonlinear application scenarios, and to identify potential development space and breakthroughs.

Abstract:Ghost imaging is widely used in underwater active optical imaging because of its simple structure, long distance, and non-local imaging. However, the complexity of the underwater environment will greatly reduce the imaging quality of ghost imaging. To solve this problem, an underwater ghost imaging method based on the generative adversarial networks is proposed in the study. The generator of the proposed network adopts U-Net with the double skip connections and the attention module to improve the reconstruction quality. In the network training process, the total loss function is the sum of the weighted adversarial loss, perceptual loss, and pixel loss. The experiment and simulation results show that the proposed method effectively improves the target reconstruction performance of underwater ghost imaging. The proposed method promotes the further development of active optical imaging of underwater targets based on ghost imaging technology.
An Approach For Sensing Underwater Particles Using Digital Holographic Imaging

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to use digital holographic imaging to capture the hologram of the underwater particles. Digital holography includes two steps: wavefront recording and wavefront reconstruction. In the experiments of the underwater particles, some technique issues, such as the principle of digital holography, zero-order item suppressing and reconstruction algorithm are discussed. The complex amplitude of the underwater particles is reconstructed using numerical methods based on the Kirchhoff-Fresnel integral formula. In this case, it enables reconstruction of the object wavefield in a plane at a distance d from hologram. This novel method for imaging the underwater particles using digital holography is an extremely valuable technique for the study of underwater particles fields as it has many advantages such as large depth of field, no focusing, high resolution and has the ability to record the wavefront information of all particles in the entire volume. Finally, this paper demonstrates it is possible for digital holographic imaging setup with less complexity to image underwater particles according to our laboratory results.
Computational Ghost Imaging in Turbulent Water Based on Self-Supervised Information Extraction Network

Abstract:In this study, we proposed an underwater ghost imaging (GI) method based on a self-supervised information extraction network (IEGI), which comprises two modules: speckle information extraction (SIE) and object information extraction (OIE). The proposed method aims to leverage the strengths of neural networks in extracting information and incorporate it into GI to produce high-quality imaging with a low sampling rate. To achieve this, we employ SIE to extract information that is beneficial to GI from speckles. This module improves the utilization of speckle information and eliminates unnecessary data for GI, consequently reducing the required sampling rate. OIE is then employed to extract object information from the image generated by GI, thus retrieving a final object image that is absent of irrelevant information. The self-supervised network leveraged in our method does not require any training datasets, thereby improving its generalizability across diverse scenes. We also demonstrate the proposed IEGI method through experimental evaluation employing underwater transmitted and reflected GI with significant noise introduced by turbulence. The IEGI method outperforms some other prevalent GI techniques in terms of contrast-to-noise rate, even at extremely low sampling rates.
A simple and robust single-pixel computational ghost imaging

Abstract: A simple and robust experiment demonstrating computational ghost imaging with structured illumination and a single-pixel detector has been performed. Our experimental setup utilizes a general computer for generating pseudo-randomly patterns on the liquid crystal display screen to illuminate a partially-transmissive object. With an incoherent light source, this object is imaged. The effects of light source, light path, and the number of measurements on the reconstruction quality of the object are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. The realization of computational ghost imaging with computer liquid crystal display is a further setup toward the practical application of ghost imaging with ordinary incoherent light.
Underwater Image Restoration Using Color Correction And Non-Local Prior

Abstract:Underwater images often suffer from color and contrast degradation, because the light is absorbed and scattered while traveling in water. Although the physical process of the underwater images seems similar to the outdoor haze images, conventional dehazing methods fail to generate accurate results since colors associated to different wavelengths have different attenuation rates in underwater conditions. To overcome this, we propose a novel underwater image restoration method based on color correction and image dehazing. First, we estimate the global background light using a hierarchical search based on quad-tree subdivision combined with the ocean optical properties. According to the properties of underwater optical imaging, we then introduce an underwater color correction method using depth compensation, in which a multi-channel guided image filter is proposed to refine the depth image. Finally, we adopt the non-local image dehazing algorithm to restore the underwater images. Experimental results demonstrate that the restored images can achieve better visual quality of underwater images when compared with several state-of-the-art methods.
Method of Push-Broom Underwater Ghost Imaging Computation

Abstract:To address the problem of backscattering in underwater optical imaging, a method of push-broom underwater ghost imaging computation is studied. A push-broom computation mode for ghost imaging is introduced. Multiple detection lines are combined to form a joint compressive sensing model by exploiting the inter-line correlation. Iterative shrinkage thresholding method is used to solve the model. An experiment setup of underwater ghost imaging computation is established. The proposed method is experimentally compared with traditional plane-array ghost imaging computation methods under different turbidities. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the backscattering effectively.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of underwater turbulence on computational ghost imaging (CGI) technology, combining theoretical analysis with experimental data. We simulated vehicle-induced turbulence and utilized compressed sensing for image reconstruction to analyze its impact on image quality. Our findings reveal that turbulence, especially flow-aligned with the light beam, significantly degrades image quality, with the most pronounced effects at the signal reception end. As turbulence increases, image quality declines, and turbulence directionality substantially affects image quality, with parallel turbulence causing more wavefront aberrations. CGI shows tolerance to light-perpendicular turbulence, maintaining clarity despite resolution, contrast, and brightness reductions during intense turbulence. We introduced PSNR and SSIM to quantify the impact of turbulence on image quality, confirming CGI's resilience to turbulence interference. Our results imply that optimizing the vehicle platform's propulsion system to minimize turbulence in the signal detection direction can preserve ghost imaging performance. This research lays a scientific groundwork for improving CGI's turbulence resistance in underwater environments, aiding its practical use in complex underwater scenarios.

Abstract:Due to the absorptive and scattering nature of water, the characteristic of underwater image is different with it in the air. Underwater image is characterized by their poor visibility and noise. Getting clear original image and image processing are two important problems to be solved in underwater clear vision area. In this paper a new approach technology is presented to solve these problems. Firstly, an inhomogeneous illumination method is developed to get the clear original image. Normal illumination image system and inhomogeneous illumination image system are used to capture the image in same distance. The result shows that the contrast and definition of processed image is get great improvement by inhomogeneous illumination method. Secondly, based on the theory of photon transmitted in the water and the particularity of underwater target detecting, the characters of laser scattering on underwater target surface and spatial and temporal characters of oceanic optical channel have been studied. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation, we studied how the parameters of water quality and other systemic parameters affect the light transmitting through water at spatial and temporal region and provided the theoretical sustentation of enhancing the SNR and operational distance.

Abstract:Underwater optical imaging is essential for exploring the underwater environment to provide information for planning and regulating underwater activities in various underwater applications, such as aquaculture farm observation, underwater topographical survey, and underwater infrastructure monitoring. Thus, there is a need to investigate the underwater imaging process and propose clear and long-range underwater optical imaging methods to fulfill the demands of academia and industry. In this manuscript, we classify the eighteen most commonly used underwater optical imaging methods into two groups regarding the imaging principle, (1) hardware and (2) software-based methods, each with an explanation of the theory, features, and applications. Furthermore, we also discuss the current challenges and future directions for improving the performance of current methods, such as improving the accuracy of underwater image formation model estimation, enlarging the underwater image dataset, proposing comprehensive underwater imaging evaluation metrics, estimating underwater depth and integrating different methods (e.g., hardware- and software-based methods for computational imaging) to promote the imaging performance not only in the laboratory but also in practical underwater scenarios.
