Abstract:Polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are highly toxic to humans and wildlife. In the present study, PCDD/Fs were analyzed in the eggs of whiskered terns ( Chlidonias hybrida ), and genetically identified eggs from black-crowned night herons ( Nycticorax nycticorax ) sampled from two lakes in the Yangtze River Delta area, China. The median toxic equivalent (TEQ) of PCDD/Fs were 280 (range: 95–1500) and 400 (range: 220–1100) pg TEQ g −1 lw (WHO, 1998 for birds) in the eggs of black-crowned night heron and whiskered tern, respectively. Compared to known sources, concentrations of PCDDs relative to the sum of PCDD/Fs in bird eggs, demonstrated high abundance of octachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin (OCDD), 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptaCDD and 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexaCDD indicating pentachlorophenol (PCP), and/or sodium pentachlorophenolate (Na-PCP) as significant sources of the PCDD/Fs. The presence of polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs), hydroxylated and methoxylated polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (OH- and MeO-PCDEs, known impurities in PCP products), corroborates this hypothesis. Further, significant correlations were found between the predominant congener CDE-206, 3′-OH-CDE-207, 2′-MeO-CDE-206 and OCDD, indicating a common origin. Eggs from the two lakes are sometimes used for human consumption. The WHO health-based tolerable intake of PCDD/Fs is exceeded if eggs from the two lakes are consumed regularly on a weekly basis, particularly for children. The TEQs extensively exceed maximum levels for PCDD/Fs in hen eggs and egg products according to EU legislation (2.5 pg TEQ g −1 lw). The results suggest immediate action should be taken to manage the contamination, and further studies evaluating the impacts of egg consumption from wild birds in China. Likewise, studies on dioxins and other POPs in common eggs need to be initiated around China.

Abstract:Twenty-one organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured in the muscle of six predominant waterbird species from Jianghan Plain, Hubei Province, Central China. Among OCPs, DDTs were the most prevalent compounds, with average concentration ranging from 31.1 to 1445 ng/g lipid weight. Little egrets (Egretta garzetta) and Chinese pond herons (Ardeola bacchus) showed significantly higher concentrations of OCPs (p < 0.05) due to their dietary habits and migratory patterns. There were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) for most OCPs between sex and age groups. The accumulation profiles of HCHs and DDTs suggested that these OCPs in Jianghan Plain were largely derived from historical usage. Risk assessment indicated that heptachlor could be likely to pose adverse health effects on people consuming ducks in Jianghan Plain.

Abstract:Organohalogen compounds, the pesticides aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, hexachlorobenzene, mirex, Sigma chlordanes, Sigma DDTs, Sigma heptachlors, Sigma toxaphenes, and the industrial chemicals Sigma PCBs and Sigma PBDEs, as well as total dioxin-like equivalents (TEQ(H4IIE-luc), were measured in eggs of two Ardeid species, the little egret (Egretta garzetta) and black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) from three port cities along the South China coast: Hong Kong, Xiamen, and Quanzhou. Sigma DDTs was the predominant and most abundant residue, occurring at concentrations ranging from 2.7 x 10(3) to 8.7 x 10(4) ng/g lipid wt. The greatest concentrations of the studied compounds were observed in eggs collected from Hong Kong, with the exception of Sigma DDTs, which occurred at the greatest concentrations in eggs from Quanzhou Bay and Xiamen Harbor. Concentrations of Sigma PBDEs were greater in eggs from Quanzhou Bay and Xiamen Harbor, possibly because of rapid industrialization in these areas. Total concentrations of dioxin-like PCB toxic equivalents (TEQs), measured as the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)mediated responses of the H4IIE-luc bioassay (TEQ(H4IIE-luc)), were greatest in Hong Kong samples. A risk assessment of the relatively great concentrations of Sigma DDEs and dioxin-like (coplanar) PCBs in the eggs (threshold levels: 2.8 mu g/g wet wt. and 5 pg/g wet wt., respectively) predicted that concentrations of these compounds would be expected to affect some proportion of the Ardeid populations studied.

Abstract:Black-crowned night heron ( Nycticorax nycticorax ) eggs have been identified as useful indicators for biomonitoring the environmental pollution in China. In this study, we investigated thirty eggs of black-crowned night heron collected from the upper Yangtze River (Changjiang) Basin, Southwest China, for the occurrence of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Our results showed a general presence of POPs in night heron eggs with OCPs being the dominant contaminants, having a geometric mean concentration of 22.2 ng g −1 wet weight (ww), followed by PCBs (1.36 ng g −1 ww), PBDEs (0.215 ng g −1 ww), and PCDD/Fs (23.0 pg g −1 ww). The concentration levels were found to be significantly higher in night heron eggs than in poultry eggs by one or two magnitude orders. Among OCP congeners, p,p′-DDE was found to be predominant in night heron eggs, with a geometric mean concentration of 15.1 ng g −1 ww. Furthermore, species-specific congener patterns in eggs suggested similar or different sources for different POPs, possibly associated with contaminated soil and parental dietary sources. Additionally, estimated daily intakes (EDIs) were used to evaluate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk associated with consumption of bird eggs. Our results revealed non-negligible non-cancer and cancer risk for humans who consume wild bird eggs as a regular diet instead of poultry eggs.

Abstract:Seventeen organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in the water and sediments from a waterbird-inhabited lake (Yangchaihu Lake) to evaluate their current pollution levels and potential risks. The concentrations of total OCPs in water and sediments were 10.12–59.75 ng/l and 4.25–27.35 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the most abundant OCPs, while HCB and cyclodiene pesticides were detected with low levels. Levels of ∑OCPs (sum of 17 OCPs) at sites highly influenced by waterbirds were significantly higher than the sites with no significant waterbird populations (one-way ANOVA, P < 0.05), suggesting that bird activities were one reason for concentration distribution of these pollutants. Compositional and source analyses of OCPs in water and sediments indicated that there might be fresh introduction of lindane and heptachlor. The partitions of most OCPs were not in equilibrium between water and sediments. The results of an ecological risk assessment showed that residue levels of DDTs in the studied area might pose adverse effects on ecosystems.

Abstract:Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in eggs of eight avian species collected from Dongting Lake of China to assess residue levels, accumulation patterns, and toxic potential in different avian species. Concentrations of total 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs were in the range of 10.8–182pgg−1 lipid weight. Eggs of great egret and lesser pied kingfisher contained higher levels of PCDD/Fs than eggs of other species, indicating the specific exposure and accumulation of PCDD/Fs relating to feeding habits and the life span. PCDD/Fs congener patterns varied among species. The patterns of PCDD/Fs in the eggs may be influenced by feeding habits, specific elimination, and metabolism. In general, concentrations of PCDDs were higher than those of PCDFs in avian eggs. On basis of lipid weight, total 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalents (TEQs) calculated based on the WHO TEFs for birds ranged from 2.04 to 42.0pgg−1; and on basis of wet weight, total WHO-TEQs ranged from 0.19 to 1.59pgg−1. 2,3,7,8-TCDF, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF, 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD were the major contributors to TEQ concentration in most avian eggs, whereas 1,2,3,4,7,8-HxCDD also accounted for a major portion of TEQs in eggs of azure-winged magpie. Values of TEQs in avian eggs were lower than toxic threshold values, implying risk reduction and natural restoration of PCDD/Fs contamination in Dongting Lake region.

Abstract:This was achieved using a PUF passive air sampling system,based on the Guangdong province and Hong Kong in Pear river delta(PRD)between Aug.15 and Oct.14,2005.The results showed residues of OCPs are DDTs(54.5%),HCH and chlordane in Guangdong province,Residues of OCPs are chlordane(51.3%)and DDTs in HK.Using the comparison of isomer and content of compounds bring forward origin of higher residues of OCPs in PRD.Dicofol and tech-DDT is source of higher concentration of DDTs in HK.Source of HCH is usage of hexachloro-cyclohexane in PRD and technique-666 in HK.Concentration of HCB is low in PRD.Residues of HCB in air is from agriculture production and chemosynthesis.
Residue Character of Polychlorinated Biphenyls(pcbs) in Eggs of Night Heron.

Abstract:：The residue situation of PCB congeners in eggs of night heron breeding in Wuxi area of Jiangsu and Gongqing City of Jiangxi was analyzed. 6 PCB congeners -PCB 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180- were detected in samples from Wuxi, of which PCB 153, 138, 180 accounted to 85 percents of the ∑PCBs in samples, whilst only 3 PCB congeners -52, 153, 180- were detected in samples from Gongqing, of which PCB 153, 180 accounted to over 95 percents of the ∑PCBs, indicating that PCB congeners with more chlorine were more easily accumulated in organisms. The residue levels of PCBs in samples from Wuxi were higher than those from Gongqing, and the difference of PCB 180 residue amount in samples from these two places was significant -P=0.0030.01-. This difference might be caused by the higher level of industrial development in Wuxi, so the residue amount of PCBs in eggs of night heron can be used to monitor the PCBs contamination in regional environment.

Abstract:In this study, we measured the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 620 foods collected during 2006-2015 from Zhejiang market, a municipal waste incinerator (MWI) and E-waste disassembling areas. For market retail foods, the levels of PCDD/F TEQs, PCDD/F plus dioxin-like PCB (DL-PCB) TEQs, and the concentrations of six indicator PCBs were generally below the EU ML The average TEQvalues for the 13 food groups were 42% of EU ML for PCDD/Fs and 32% for PCDD/Fs + DL-PCBs. Some foods of animal origin were close to the corresponding EU ML: pork (PCDD/F TEQ 79% of ML; PCDD/F + DL-PO TEQ 84% of ML); infant formula (90% of PCDD/F ML) and beef (96% of PCDD/F ML; PCDD/F + DL-PCB TEQ 78% of ML). The estimated dietary intake for the general population was 22.0 pgTEQ(kg body weight (bw))(-1) month(-1), which was below the standard of 70 pgTEQ(kg bw)(-1) month(-1) set by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). For the MWI and E-waste disassembling sites, high concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were measured in all foods tested. The corresponding TEQ in (1) freshwater fish, (2) chicken egg, (3) chicken meat and (4) chicken liver was (1) 1.4-fold (MWI, PCDD/F TEQ), (2) 11.2-fold (MWI,) and 1.6-fold (E-waste disassembling sites), (3) 20.7-fold and (4) 3.3-fold greater than EU ML, respectively. Considering the worst situation (highly polluted foods were consumed), the estimated dietary intake for local residents were 244 (MWI) and 240 pg TEQ (kg bw)(-1) month(-1) (E-waste disassembling sites), approximately 3.5-fold greater compared to the standard 70 pg TEQ (kg bw)(-1) month(-1) set by JECFA, indicating high risk could have been imposed on the health of local residents. Distribution of organochlorine pesticides in the liver of waterbirds from Honghu wetland, Central China

Abstract:Twenty organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured in the liver of six waterbird species from Honghu wetland. Among OCPs, DDTs were the most prevalent compounds (38.3%~93.0%), with average concentration ranging from 2.74 to 121.72ng/g wet weight. The accumulation profiles of HCHs and DDTs suggested that these OCPs in the Honghu wetland were largely derived from historical usage. Significant interspecific differences were observed in the levels of sum OCPs in the liver of all waterbirds (P<0.01). Concentrations of total OCPs in little egrets (Egretta garzetta) and chinese-pond herons (Ardeola bacchus) (37.91~137.22ng/g wet weight) were higher than those in the other birds (5.00~21.49ng/g wet weight), which might be attributed to their different dietary habits. Higher average concentrations of OCPs were observed in males (little egrets:136.90ng/g wet weight;chinese-pond herons:52.41ng/g wet weight) than in females (little egrets: 126.60ng/g wet weight; chinese-pond herons: 49.78ng/g wet weight) for little egrets and chinese-pond herons. Compared with other regions worldwide, concentrations of OCPs in waterbirds from Honghu wetland were at low levels. The analysis of risk assessment indicated that the concentrations of OCPs detected in the present study were not expected to pose any hazard to waterbird populations.
A nationwide characterization of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in livestock and poultry food products across China: Residual levels, origin and the associated health risks

Abstract:Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are still occurring in various foodstuffs after the ban on their use. However, it remains unclear concerning the contamination source of OCPs in livestock and poultry food products and associated health risks. To fill this gap, we characterized the residual levels of 19 OCPs in multiple types of meats and eggs, which were sampled across China within the same period. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were dominant in eggs, with the mean levels being 0.76 and 2.03 μg/kg for chicken eggs and duck eggs, respectively. By contrast, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) were the top one OCP in beef and lamb, with its mean levels being 0.51 and 0.65 μg/kg, respectively. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was rather detected in the poultry products. The componential ratio analysis implicated recent inputs of several banned OCPs including technical HCH and DDT, HCB and aldrin in multiple regions, which may origin from local industrial activities or possible illegal use. Risk assessment based on the risk quotient method suggested that daily consumption of cooked meats and eggs contaminated by dieldrin may pose a carcinogenic risk in adult residents of Jiangsu province. We concluded that OCPs remain present in meats and eggs at levels of health concern regionally in China.

Abstract:Monitoring and evaluating bird exposure to hazardous pollutants in wetlands are receiving considerable attention. In this study, the occurrence of 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the muscle of bean geese ( Anser fabalis ) and common teals ( Anas crecca ) collected from Honghu Lake Wetland (HLW), Central China was studied. Additionally, an exposure risk assessment model was applied to obtain risk levels of OCPs to these birds through three oral routes (food intake, water drinking and soil ingestion). The results suggested that the most abundant OCPs detected in the muscle of waterbirds were DDTs (7.68–602 ng/g lipid weight), followed by HCHs (1.39–89.8 ng/g lipid weight). A significant difference ( p < 0.05) existed between two species, but most of OCPs exhibited no statistically relationship with age or gender ( p > 0.05). The compositional patterns of OCPs combined with ratios of certain metabolites to their parent compounds indicated that all OCPs in the HLW were largely from historical usage except heptachlor. The exposure risk assessment revealed that common teals with lighter weight had greater exposure risks than bean geese. Of the OCPs analyzed, DDTs could probably cause harm to target birds studied here. Exposure via food intake was identified to be significant while soil ingestion and water drinking contributed least, but they should still be concerned.
Levels and Distribution of Organochlorine Pesticides in Shellfish from Qiantang River, China.

Abstract:Various shellfish collected from different locations along the Qiantang River in 2006 were analyzed for the levels of 13 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in order to elucidate the status of OCPs pollution in shellfish for human consumption. Total concentrations of OCPs in shellfish ranged from 16.9 to 78.6ng/g wet weight (ww), with HCHs (α-, β-, γ-, δ-HCH), DDTs (p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDD) and other OCPs (aldrin, diedrin, endrin, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide) in the range of 3.33–13.2, 8.38–40.1 and 2.32–14.3ng/g ww, respectively. The dominant OCPs in shellfish were p,p′-DDE among DDTs, β-HCH among HCHs and heptachlor epoxide among other OCPs. It is noticeable that higher OCPs biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) occurred at site with high concentration of OCPs in sediments. The field bioconcentration factor (BCF) increased exponentially with the increase of Kow (octanol–water partition coefficients) of the OCPs. Concentrations of DDTs and HCHs in shellfish from Qiantang River kept at middle level compared with those from marine environment. The concentrations of DDTs in more than 50% of edible shellfish in this study were higher than the limit of 14.4ng/g ww for human consumption recommended by US EPA (2000).

Abstract:The concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in muscle, liver and brain of ducks from Baiyangdian Lake were determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometer (GC/MS). The results showed that the concentrations of HCHs, DDTs and PBDEs in various tissues of ducks were in the range of 0.9-5.0 ng/g wet weight (WW), 0.3-2.8 ng/g (WW) and 0.03-0.65 ng/g (WW), respectively. Statistical analysis indicated that the accumulation of DDTs and PBDEs in muscle, liver and brain was significantly different (p < 0.05), but not with HCHs (p > 0.05). Liver tissues contained the highest DDTs and PBDEs levels, with average concentrations of 2.3 ng/g (WW) and 0.37 ng/g (WW), respectively. Among the HCH isomers and DDT metabolites, beta-HCH was the predominant isomers in liver and brain tissues, and p,p'-DDE was the dominant metabolites of DDTs in various tissues. Among the PBDE congeners, BDE47 and BDE99 were the predominant in various tissues. The different profiles of persistent organohalogen compounds in various tissues of ducks may reflect that the Baiyangdian Lake still subject to the contamination of historically residue for HCHs and DDTs. In addition, the source of PBDEs was partly attributed to the industrial pollution, chemical plants, and sewage discharging.

Abstract:Honghu Lake in Jianghan Plain, central China is an important habitat for many migratory birds and an important site for freshwater fishery, and Honghu Lake region is also a main area for rice and cotton production in China. To understand the status and changes of organochlorine pesticide (OCP) contamination, and to assess the OCPs' risks for the ecosystem in Honghu Lake, thirty surface water samples, fifteen surface sediments, and a sediment core were collected in January and July, 2005. OCPs, such as DDTs, HCHs and chlordanes, were determined by GC-ECD in all samples. Concentrations of OCPs in surface water collected during the wet season (July 2005) were relatively higher than those collected during the dry season (January 2005), indicating that the increasing land runoff during the summer might bring the chemical residues from soils to Honghu Lake. The relatively low α-HCH/γ-HCH ratio and the relatively high o,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDT ratio indicated the application of lindane on regional agricultural lands in late spring and summer (April–August), which increased the increasing contribution of dicofol to DDT in Honghu Lake, respectively. The levels of ΣHCHs and ΣDDTs in the surface sediments were relatively lower than those from the Yangtze River Delta, but comparable to those from other lakes and rivers in China. The composition of HCHs and DDTs in the surface sediments showed that there was fresh input of lindane (γ-HCH), and DDT residues in Honghu Lake were aged and probably mainly originated from weathered agricultural soils of surrounding Jianghan Plain. Wash out of HCHs and DDTs from soil was the possible process which caused the increasing concentrations of these chemicals in recent years.
Species-specific Accumulation of Halogenated Flame Retardants in Eggs of Terrestrial Birds from an Ecological Station in the Pearl River Delta, South China

Abstract:Little information is available on the bioaccumulation of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in terrestrial ecosystem. Eggs of light-vented bulbul, yellow-bellied prinia, plain prinia, and dark green white-eye were collected from an ecological station in the Pearl River Delta, South China to investigate the occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and several alternative HFRs, including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), dechlorane plus (DP), hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), pentabromotoluene (PBT), and 2,3,5,6-tetrabromo-p-xylene (pTBX). Concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE, DP, HBB, PBEB, BTBPE, PBT, and pTBX ranged from 53–423, 6.1–609, 4.6–268, not detected (nd)-10, nd-1.4, nd-1.7, nd-7.5, and nd-3.2 ng g−1 lw, respectively. Light-vented bulbul exhibited significantly lower levels of PBDEs, DBDPE, DP, and HBB than other three bird species due to its phytophagy and the other three bird species' insectivores. PBDEs were the predominant HFRs in bird eggs, followed by DBDPE and DP. Significant negative relationship between the fraction of anti-DP and DP concentrations was observed in bird eggs, suggesting that DP levels play an important role in determining the isomeric composition. Anti-Cl11-DP, the dechlorinated products of DP, was found in bird eggs with concentrations ranging from nd to 0.86 ng g−1 lw and its source is worth further research.

Abstract:The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides(OCPs) in muscle and liver of waterbirds(including Egrets garzetta and Ardeola bacchus) from Honghu Lake were determined by Gas-chromatography electron capture detector(GC-ECD).The results showed that most organochlorine pesticides such as hexachlorocyclohexane(HCHs),dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDTs),hexachlorobenzene(HCB),aldrin,heptachlor,and heptachlor-epoxide were detectable.The concentrations of HCHs and DDTs in muscle of Egrets garzetta were in the range of 11.3—89.4 ng · g-1 lipid weight(lw) and 162—2149 ng · g-1 lw respectively,and those of HCHs and DDTs in liver of Egrets garzetta were in the range of 3.73—30.6 ng · g-1 lw and 280—957 ng · g-1 lw respectively.The concentrations of HCHs and DDTs of Ardeola bacchus in muscle were in the range of 3.61—25.8 ng · g-1 lw and 68.4—261 ng · g-1 lw,and those in liver were in the range of 6.63—18.9 ng · g-1 lw and 147—13.5 ng · g-1 lw,respectively.No significant differences were found between the levels of HCHs and DDTs in muscle and liver.The profiles of HCHs and DDTs indicated that no new inputs exist in study area for these two contaminants.Honghu wetland could be a potential source of the organochlorine contamination,migratory bird such as ardeola bacchus in the present study could likely transport pollutants from the study site to winter place.Compared with reports in other regions,the levels of OCPs in the present study were low and the risk of OCPs to birds in the study area was also low.

Abstract:Tissue distribution provides important information regarding the pharmacokinetic behavior of pollutants and is invaluable when analyzing the risk posed to avian species by the exposure to such kind of pollutants. In this study, concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in muscle, liver, spleen, kidney, stomach, gall bladder, skin, heart, pancreas, intestine and lung tissue extracts of cormorants collected from Dongting Lake, China. Tissue distribution results showed preferential accumulation of PCDD/Fs in both liver and skin. The total concentration of PCDD/Fs ranged from 421 to 5696 pg/g lipid weight. Octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) was the predominant congener in all tissues and contributed between 31% and 82% to all 17 PCDD/Fs in different tissues. The liver/muscle ratios progressively increased with the degree of chlorination of PCDDs, except for OCDD. The relative toxic potential of PCDDs and PCDFs in tissues were calculated using the World Health Organization (WHO) Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEFs) for birds. The concentrations of WHO-toxic equivalent in different tissues ranged between 14.8 and 2021 pg/g lipid weight. These results indicated PCDD/Fs may have been bio-accumulated in cormorant via food-web. Furthermore, when compared with studies reported in the literatures, the PCDD/Fs levels in the cormorant collected from Dongting Lake were still relatively high.

Abstract:Thirty-four surface sediment samples were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in order to provide information on levels, distribution and sources of these compounds in the Yellow River Estuary, China. The levels of the organochlorine pesticides in samples were detected by the technique of soxhlet extraction followed by analysis by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with a mass selective detector. Total concentrations of OCPs ranged widely from 0.06 to 53.4 ng g(-1), with a mean value of 44.84 ng g(-1), at the mid level of pesticide concentrations compared to those reported in other regions worldwide. HCHs were the predominant species in the study area. The ratios of alpha-HCH/gamma-HCH indicated that the technical HCH contamination was mainly due to a recent input of lindane in upper reach of Yellow River Estuary. The ratios of (DDD + DDE)/DDTs and DDD/DDE suggested that DDTs in sediments came mainly from the degradation of historical DDT in the environment, and DDT could be much easier to degrade into DDD under anaerobic conditions. Principal component analysis (PCA) could conclude that most of the OCPs came from early input and historical degradation products in the study area. Based on the sediment quality guidelines, gamma-HCH and p'p-DDE would be of more concern for the ecotoxicological risk in this study area.

Abstract:The residual levels of organochlorine pesticides( OCPs) in suspended particulate matter( SPM) of four sampling sites collected from Lake Chaohu( May 2010-April 2011) were measured. The temporal-spatial variation and composition of OCPs were analyzed and potential sources and ecological risks of OCPs were also explored. Results showed that:( 1) Seventeen types of OCPs were detected in the SPM samples of Lake Chaohu,including 4 isomers of HCHs( α-,β-,γ-,δ-HCH),two parent DDT compounds( o,p'-,p,p'-DDT) and their three metabolic products( o,p'-,p,p'-DDE,p,p'-DDD),HCB,Heptachlor,Aldrin,Isodrin,2 isomers of Chlordane( α-,γ-chlordane),Endosulfan I and Mirex.( 2) The annual average concentration of ∑OCPs in the SPM of Lake Chaohu was 172. 7 ± 434. 9 ng / g,and HCHs and DDTs accounted for 15. 1 ± 10. 3 and 138. 8 ± 407. 3 ng /g,respectively. The DDT content reached a maximum value in the summer. Regarding the spatial variability in the degree of pollution,the following trend was observed: eastern lake western lake central lake.( 3) DDTs were the primary constituents of the total OCPs. The proportion of DDTs was the highest in the summer and the lowest in the fall. However,HCHs were the most significant pollutants only in the fall.( 4) Considering possible sources,HCHs were derived from the illegal use of lindane,while DDTs likely originated from the industrial use of DDTs and illegal use in the spring. Moreover,DDTs degraded primarily under aerobic conditions.( 5) In the SPM of Lake Chaohu,residual p,p'-DDT and o,p'-DDT may have adverse impact on the aquatic organisms.
