Abstract:Binuclear transition metal carbonyl clusters serve as the simplest models in understanding metal-metal and ligand bonding that are important organometallic chemistry catalysis. Binuclear first row transition metal carbonyl ions are produced via a pulsed laser vaporization/supersonic expansion cluster ion source in the gas phase. These ions are studied by mass-selected infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. Density functional theory calculations have been performed on the geometric structures and vibrational spectra of the carbonyl ions. Their geometric and electronic structures are determined by comparison of the experimental IR spectra with the simulated spectra. The structure and the metal-metal and metal-CO bonding of both saturated and unsaturated homonuclear as well as heteronuclear carbonyl cluster cations and anions are discussed.

Abstract:Laser-ablated copper atoms, cations, and electrons react with CO molecules to give binary copper carbony neutral complexes as well as cation and anion complexes, which are isolated in solid neon and argon matrices. Based on isotopic substitution as well as density functional calculations of isotopic frequencies, absorptions at 2234.4, 2230.4, 2211.3, and 2202.1 cm−1 in neon are assigned to C–O stretching vibrations of the linear CuCO+ and Cu(CO)2+, trigonal planar Cu(CO)3+, and tetrahedral Cu(CO)4+ cations. The absorptions at 1746.2, 1793.9, and 1838.9 cm−1 in neon and at 1733.4, 1780.8, and 1829.7 cm−1 in argon are assigned to the linear CuCO− and Cu(CO)2−, and trigonal planar Cu(CO)3− anions, respectively. The solid neon observations of Cu(CO)1–3 are 20–9 cm−1 blue shifted from the argon matrix counterparts, which are in agreement with previous thermal copper atom matrix isolation studies. This work provides the first vibrational spectra of Cu(CO)1–4+ and Cu(CO)1–3−.

Abstract:In this article we presented a scalar-relativistic + spin–orbit coupling local-density electronic calculation on magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) for Heusler alloys Co2TiSn and Co2ZrSn. Though both alloys have very similar electronic band structures, the MOKE spectra exhibit quite different features. Kerr rotation spectrum of Co2TiSn showed two strong peaks near 3.8 and 6.7eV while Co2ZrSn had four smaller Kerr rotations in the Kerr spectra. The calculated maximum Kerr angles of Co2TiSn were estimated about -0.94∘ and -0.59∘ with Lotentzian δ=0.1 and 0.2eV, respectively. It is concluded that the contribution from Ti (or Zr) site to the optical conductivity is quite crucial in Heusler alloys.

Abstract:Laser ablation of transition metal targets with concurrent 4 K codeposition of CO2/Ne mixtures produces metal independent infrared absorptions at 1658.2 and 1421.6 cm(-1) due to CO2- and CO2+. Additional metal independent absorptions at 2130.8 and 1274.4 cm(-1), and at 1852.4, 1189.2, and 679.2 cm(-1) increase on annealing to 8 K. Isotopic substitution shows that both band sets involve two equivalent CO2 subunits. Based on density functional theory calculations of structures and vibrational frequencies, the 2130.8 and 1274.4 cm(-1) bands are assigned to the C2O4+ cation with C-2h symmetry, and the 1852.4, 1189.2, and 679.2 cm(-1) bands are assigned to the C2O4+ anion with D-2d symmetry. Evidence is also obtained for (CO2-)(CO2)(x)(x = 1,2) anion complexes. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Vibrational spectra have been calculated for the first time for dinuclear transition-metal compounds containing metal−metal bonds. The calculations were carried out by employing different forms of density functional theory (DFT) and basis functions of different sizes at fully optimized molecular geometry. The calculated frequencies essentially reproduced fundamentals observed in experimental infrared and Raman spectra. It is shown that DFT frequency calculations can be a very important and valuable tool to assist in analyzing and assigning measured infrared and Raman spectra and to predict vibrational frequencies for large transition-metal compounds with metal−metal bonds. The molecules included in this study were M2(O2CH)4 (M = Mo, Rh), Rh2(O2CH)4(H2O)2, and M2(O2CCH3)4 (M = Mo, Rh). Significant differences are found between the formate and acetate molecules.

Abstract:Laser-ablated vanadium and titanium atoms were reacted with CO molecules during condensation in excess neon. The V(CO)(x) and Ti(CO)(x) (x = 1-6) molecules are formed during deposition or on annealing and photolysis. The V(CO)(x)(-), Ti(CO)(x)(-) (x = 1-6) anions and TiCO+ cation are also produced and identified on the basis of isotopic substitution and density functional calculations. Selective photolysis and CCl4 doping experiments strongly support the identification of the anions and cation.
Insights into the Anomalous Vibrational Frequency Shifts of Co2 Adsorbed to Metal Sites in Microporous Frameworks

Abstract:Diffuse reflectance infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used to study the structure and dynamics of H2 and CO2 adsorbed within the isostructural metalorganic frameworks M2L (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn; L = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) referred to as M-MOF-74 and CPO-27-M. Cluster models of the primary adsorption site were excised from periodic models that were optimized using plane-wave density functional theory at the PerdewBurkeErnzerhof (PBE) level. Models incorporating an adsorbed H2 or CO2 were optimized using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT), and the anharmonic vibrational frequencies of the adsorbate were calculated using the discrete variable representation method. The calculated vibrational frequency shifts reveal the same trend among the M2L materials as those observed experimentally and provide insight into the origins of these shifts. Our experimental spectra of adsorbed CO2 confirm a unique blue shift of the v(3) mode for molecules adsorbed in Mg2L, while the frameworks assembled from transition metals induce a red shift. By shifting the focus to the CO2 local vibrational modes, a deeper insight into the influence of back bonding (metal d-electron density donation into CO2 pi* orbitals) is revealed; for Mg2L there is a near-complete cancellation of the opposing local mode contributions to the observed frequency shift. Additional spectral features in the CO2 v(3) region are assigned to (1) the v(3) mode of the (CO2)-C-13 isotopologue, (2) a combination mode involving a v(2) excitation, and (3) librational sidebands arising from center-of-mass motion of the adsorbed molecule on the surface. Interestingly, below 100 K we observe the appearance of a new band that is distinct from the primary v(3) band observed at room temperature. This band is attributed to an alternate, localized orientation of CO2 adsorbed to the metal site, which is supported by the DFT model.

Abstract:Laser ablation of transition metal targets with concurrent 11 K deposition of CO2/CO/Ar mixtures produces CO2− anion absorption at 1657.0 cm−1 and two additional metal independent absorptions at 1793.7 and 1701.7 cm−1. Isotopic substitution shows that the 1793.7 cm−1 band is due to a C–O stretching vibration and the 1701.7 cm−1 band an antisymmetric CO2 vibration. The UV photolysis and CCl4 doping experiments strongly suggest an anion identification. Based on density functional theory and ab initio calculations of structure and vibrational frequencies, these two bands are assigned to the C–O and antisymmetric CO2 stretching vibrations of the C2O3− anion coordinated between two C atoms with nonplanar Cs symmetry. Our calculations also show that the C2O3− anion is a covalently bound molecule.

Abstract:Laser-ablated Mn and Re atoms and electrons react with CO upon co-condensation in excess argon and neon to produce carbonyl neutrals and anions. These species are identified through isotopic substitution, CCl4 doping to trap ablated electrons, and density functional theory isotopic frequency calculations. MnCO is identified at 1933.6 cm(-1) in argon and at 1950.7 cm(-1) in neon, which are in agreement with the gas phase 1955 +/- 15 cm(-1) photoelectron measurement. MnCO- is found at 1789.4 cm(-1) in argon and 1807.5 cm(-1) in neon. The Mn(CO)(2) and Re(CO)(2) dicarbonyls are major product absorptions. Annealing to allow further reaction of CO produces higher carbonyls including Mn-2(CO)(10) and Re-2(CO)(10) in solid argon. Argon and neon matrix experiments are compared for both metals.

Abstract:Laser-ablated ruthenium and osmium atoms, cations and electrons have been reacted with CO molecules during condensation in excess neon. The Ru(CO)(x) and Os(CO)(x) (x = 1-5) molecules are formed during sample deposition or on annealing. The Ru(CO)(x)(-) and Os(CO)(x)(-) (x = 1-4) anions are formed by electron capture, and the RuCO+ and OsCO+ cations are produced by metal cation reactions and identified from (CO)-C-13 and (CO)-O-18 isotopic substitution, density functional calculations, and behavior on doping with CCl4 to serve as an electron trap. Density functional calculations predict these frequencies within 1% and the isotopic shifts for different C-O stretching modes within averages of 1 to 2 cm(-1) including vibrational modes for both C-3v and D-2d tetracarbonyl anion structures.

Abstract:Laser-ablated V and Ti atoms react with CO2 molecules to give primarily the insertion products, OMCO and O2M(CO)2, which have been isolated in a solid argon matrix. Photoisomerization of OMCO molecules to form the side-bonded OM−(η2-CO) isomers and photoionization to give the OMCO+ and OMOC+ cations proceed upon mercury arc photolysis. The product absorptions were identified by isotopic substitution and density functional calculations of isotopic frequencies.

Abstract:Infrared spectra of mass-selected homoleptic dinuclear iron carbonyl cluster anions Fe-2(CO)(n)(-) (n = 4-9) are measured via infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. The cluster anions are produced via a laser vaporization supersonic cluster source. Density functional calculations have been performed and the calculated vibrational spectra are compared to the experimental data to identify the gas-phase structures of the cluster anions. The experimentally observed Fe-2(CO)(n)(-) (n = 4-7) cluster anions are characterized to have unusual asymmetric (OC)(4)Fe-Fe(CO)(n-4) structures, which also correspond to the computed lowest energy structures. The experimentally observed Fe-2(CO)(8)(-) cluster anion is determined to have an unbridged structure instead of the previously reported dibridged structure. The Fe-2(CO)(9)(-) cluster anion is determined to involve a Fe-2(CO)(8)(-) core anion that is solvated by an external CO molecule. Bonding analysis indicates that these anions each have a Fe-Fe single bond to satisfy the 18-electron configuration of one iron center. The results provide important new insight into the structure and bonding mechanisms of transition-metal carbonyl clusters.

Abstract:Microwave discharge through CS2 vapor yielded CS which was cocondensed with laser-ablated copper atoms at 12 K in an argon matrix. Binary copper thiocarbonyl complexes: CuCS, Cu(CS)(2), and Cu2CS were formed via the reactions of ground state copper atoms or dimers with CS in solid argon. On the basis of isotopic shifts and splittings as well as density functional calculations, absorptions at 1187.2, 1291.3, and 1353.9 cm(-1) are assigned to the C-S stretching vibrations of the bent CuCS, linear Cu(CS)(2), and end-on bonded Cu2CS molecules, respectively. The calculation results show that these copper thiocarbonyl complexes are more strongly bonded than the corresponding copper carbonyl complexes. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:A combination of IR multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) action spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations was employed to investigate the [M,C,2H]+ (M = Fe and Co) species. These were formed by reacting laser ablated M+ ions with oxirane (ethylene oxide, c-C2H4O) in a room temperature ion trap. IRMPD spectra for the Fe and Co are very similar and exhibit one major band. Comparison with density functional theory (DFT) and coupled cluster with single and double excitations (CCSD) calculations allow assignment of the spectra to MCH2+ carbene structures. For these 3d transition metal systems, experimental IRMPD spectra compare relatively poorly with DFT calculated IR spectra, but CCSD calculated spectra are a much better match primarily because the M-C stretch gains significant intensity. The origins of this behavior are explored in some detail. The present results are also compared to previous results for the 4d and 5d congeners and the periodic trends in these structures are evaluated.

Abstract:Infrared photodissociation spectra are measured for mass selected cation complexes with a chemical formula [MC7O6](+) (M = Fe, Co, Ni) formed via pulsed laser evaporation of metal target in expansions of helium gas seeded by CO. The geometries of the complexes are determined by comparison of the experimental spectra with the simulated spectra from density functional calculations. All of these complexes are identified to have [M(CO)(4)(C3O2)](+) structures involving a carbon suboxide ligand, which binds the metal center in an eta(1) fashion. The antisymmetric CO stretching vibration of C3O2 is slightly red-shifted upon coordination. The donor-acceptor bonding interactions between C3O2 and the metal centers are analyzed using the EDA-NOCV method. The results show that M <- C3O2 sigma donation is stronger than the M -> C3O2 pi back-donation in these cation complexes.

Abstract:A nonlocal density functional theory (DFT) method has been applied to the calculations on optimized geometry, Mulliken atomic net charges and interatomic Mulliken bond orders as well as total bonding energies (E) in the binary transition metal carbonyl anions with different reduced states [M(CO)(n)](z-) (M = Cr, n = 5, 4, 3, z = 2, 4, 6; M = Mn, n = 5, 4, 3, z = 1, 3, 5; M = Fe, n = 4, 3, 2, z = 2, 4, 6; M = Co, n = 4, 3, 2, z = 1, 3, 5). For comparison of relative stability, a relative stabilization energy D is defined as D = E([M(CO)(n)](z-))-nE(CO). The calculated C-O distances are lengthened monotonously with the increase of the anionic charge, but the M-C distances are significantly lengthened only in the higher reduced states. The relative stabilization energy calculated is a considerable negative value in the lower reduced states, but a larger positive value in the higher reduced states. The DFT calculations show that with the increase of the anionic charge, the Mulliken net charges on the M, C, and O atoms all increase, however, an excess of the anionic charge is mainly located at the central metal atom. The calculated C-O Mulliken bond orders decrease consistently with the increase of the anionic charge, but the M-C bond orders exhibit an irregular behavior. However, the total bond orders calculated clearly explain the higher reduced states to be considerably unstable. From analysis of the calculated results, it is deduced that the stability of the binary transition metal carbonyl anions [M(CO)(n)](z-) studied are associated with the coordination number n and the anionic charge z, further, it is possible for the anions studied to be stable if n greater than or equal to z, conversely, it is impossible when n < z. Abstract:Heteronuclear transition metal carbonyl cluster cations FeM(CO)8(+) (M = Co, Ni and Cu) and MCu(CO)7(+) (M = Co and Ni) are produced via a laser vaporization supersonic cluster ion source in the gas phase, which are each mass-selected and studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region. Their geometric and electronic structures are established by comparison of the experimental spectra with those derived from density functional theoretical calculations. The FeM(CO)8(+) (M = Co, Ni, Cu) complexes are determined to have eclipsed (CO)5Fe-M(CO)3(+) structures, and the MCu(CO)7(+) (M = Co, Ni) ions are characterized to have staggered (CO)4M-Cu(CO)3(+) structures. Natural bonding orbital analysis indicates that the positive charge is mainly distributed on the M(CO)3 fragment. The metal-metal interaction involves an σ-type (OC)4,5M→M(CO)3(+) dative bonding.

Abstract:Infrared spectra of mass-selected homoleptic dinuclear chromium carbonyl cluster cations Cr-2(CO)(n)(+) with n = 7-9 are measured via infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching frequency region in the gas phase. The structures are established by comparison of the experimental spectra with the simulated spectra derived from density functional calculations. The Cr-2(CO)(n)(+) cluster cations are characterized to have the (OC)(5)Cr-C-O-Cr(CO)(n-6)(+) structures with a linear bridging carbonyl group bonded to one chromium atom through its carbon atom and to the other chromium atom through its oxygen atom. The cluster cations all have a sextet ground state with the positive charge and the unpaired electrons located on the Cr(CO)(n-6) moiety. The formation of the linear bridging structures without Cr-Cr bonding can be rationalized that chromium forms strong Cr-CO bonds but weak Cr-Cr bonds.

Abstract:Laser-ablated cobalt atoms have been reacted with CO molecules during condensation in excess argon. The CoCO molecule is observed after deposition, and Co(CO)2,3,4 are formed on annealing in agreement with earlier matrix work. Cobalt carbonyl anions are also produced and trapped. On the basis of isotopic substitution and density functional calculations, a sharp absorption at 1804.0 cm-1 is assigned to the C−O stretching mode of CoCO-, 1768.9 and 1860.2 cm-1 bands to antisymmetric and symmetric C−O stretching vibrations of bent Co(CO)2-, and 1826.9 and 1890.0 cm-1 absorptions to the antisymmetric stretching modes of Co(CO)3- and Co(CO)4-, respectively.
