Abstract:We report the fractional second-harmonic Talbot effect associating with the χ(2) in periodically-poled LiTaO3 (PPLT) crystals. Our results show that the images are sensitive to the duty circle and the background of the array.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the superposed second-harmonic Talbot self-image in a z-cut periodically-poled LiTaO3 crystal. The generated second-harmonic (SH) waves in the positive and negative domains have the same intensity but different phases (a phase shift of π) due to the opposite poling directions, i.e. a second-harmonic phase pattern is generated from the crystal. By introducing a reference SH wave, we can selectively study the self-imaging originating from the SH patterns with different phases. In the integer and fractional Talbot planes, the two patterns interfere with each other and form superposed self-imaging patterns.

Abstract:We demonstrate the improved second-harmonic Talbot self-imaging through the quasi-phase-matching technique in a 2D periodically-poled LiTaO(3) crystal. The domain structure not only composes a nonlinear optical grating which is necessary to realize nonlinear Talbot self-imaging, but also provides reciprocal vectors to satisfy the phase-matching condition for second-harmonic generation. Our experimental results show that quasi-phase-matching can improve the intensity of the second-harmonic Talbot self-imaging by a factor of 21.

Abstract:Based on nonlinear Talbot effect, we propose an acousto-optic tunable second-harmonic (SH) array in a one-dimensional periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal. The SH array is the self-imaging of χ(2) in the PPLN crystal. By applying an acoustic wave, we can tune the period, the distribution, and even the dimension of the array. Such a phenomenon has potential applications in tunable high-resolution Talbot illuminators, beam shapers, and image processing.

Abstract:The nonlinear Talbot effect means formation of self-imaging of the periodic structure by utilizing the harmonic wave instead of the fundamental one. Electromagnetically induced optical lattices established in atomic ensembles by optical induction technique have received great attention in recent years. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear four wave mixing (FWM) Talbot effect in the Rubidium medium, where the third-order susceptibility χ(3) has periodic distribution due to the modulation from the incident pump light. Two kinds of periodic structure, the square lattice and hexagonal lattice, are employed to investigate the nonlinear FWM Talbot effect. The integer and fractional Talbot images produced by the FWM field are all obtained. The experimental results are qualitatively consistent with theoretical simulations. Different from the self-imaging of the refractive index in the linear optics, the FWM Talbot effect is the self-imaging of the periodic χ(3) . The results may offer a high-resolution lensless way for imaging various optical periodic structures.

Abstract:We design a fringe-variable Jamin interferometer to detect the reversed domain of a ferroelectric crystal in real time. In contrast to the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, this setup is compact and tunable in fringe frequency. In experiments, we use it to detect the partly reversed domains of Stoichiometric LiTaO3 (SLT). Selecting the proper fringe cycle, we can estimate the average phase shift between the original and reversed domains through eyeballing. Furthermore, in the interferogram processing, we use the FFT methods to reconstruct the phase according to the original fringe and deformed fringe, and obtain the phase variance at the domain wall. The results show that the average phase variance at the domain wall is in good agreement with the theoretical value.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of two-dimensional Talbot effect when a resonance plane wave interacts with a two-dimensional atomic density grating generated by standing wave manipulation of ultracold Bose gases. Clear self-images of the grating and sub-images with reversed phase or fractal patterns are observed. By calculating the autocorrelation functions of the images, the behavior of periodic Talbot images is studied. The Talbot effect with two-dimensional atomic density grating expands the applications of the Talbot effect in a wide variety of research fields.

Abstract:A radio-frequency heating Czochralski technique to obtain LiTaO3 crystals with modulated structure (periodic lamina of ferroelectric domains) is first presented. The alternation of the ferroelectric domains whose half-period nearly corresponds to the coherence length Lc has been achieved. Quasi-phase-matching for the nonlinear coefficient d33 has been first realized using 1.06μm Nd:YAG laser in crystals LiTaO3.

Abstract:The Fresnel diffraction of resonant diffraction grating is studied on the basis of the modal method, and it shows that the conventional fractional Talbot effect can still occur by choosing appropriate parameters. The Fresnel diffraction distributions of the resonant diffraction gratings with periods between λ and 4λ are analyzed, and the diffraction fields exhibit periodicity in both grating direction and the propagating direction. The experiment is carried out to verify the simulation results of the quasi-fractional Talbot effect of the resonant diffraction grating. This effect has potential application in lithography for high-resolution patterning.

Abstract:The quantum Talbot effect is observed from a domain-engineered nonlinear photonic crystal dispensing with a real grating. We deduce and experimentally verify the quantum self-imaging formula which is related to the crystal's structure parameter and working wavelengths. A two-photon Talbot carpet is captured to characterize the Fresnel diffraction dynamics of entangled photons wherein the quantum fractional Talbot effect is specified. The compact and stable quantum Talbot effect can be considered as the contactless diagnosis of domain's homogeneity and developed for new types of entangled photon source and quantum technologies such as quantum lithography with improved performance.

Abstract:We report that the optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) is conserved in the two-step cascaded nonlinear processes through quasi-phase-matched (QPM) in a dual-structure periodically poled LiTaO!(PPLT) crystal. Because of the different reciprocal vectors provided by the different structures in the crystal, collinear second harmonic (SH) beam with an OAM of l2 and third harmonic (TH) beam with an OAM of l3 are simultaneously generated by the input fundamental beam with an OAM of l1. The OAM conversion law (l2 = 2l1, l3 = 3l1) holds well in this nonlinear process. Our results provide an effective way to obtain three beams (fundamental beam, SH beam, TH beam) with different OAMs at the same time, which can be used to enhance the capacity of optical communication.

Abstract:The study of phonon-polariton Raman scattering continues to be a challenge, in part because of the difficulty of measuring relatively low intensity of scattered signals. This paper reports the experimental results on phonon-polariton Raman scattering in a hexagonally poled LiTaO3 crystal, showing the anti-Stokes and Stokes Raman signal intensities are significantly enhanced by cascading a couple of quasi-phase-matching processes where the coherent polariton fields are driven and the enhanced scattering signals are further amplified.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) conversion by the coupled nonlinear optical processes in a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal. In such a crystal, third-harmonic generation (THG) is realized by the coupled second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) processes, i.e., SHG is dependent on SFG and vice versa. The OAMs of the interacting waves are proved to be conserved in such coupled nonlinear optical processes. As we increase the input OAM in the experiment, the conversion efficiency decreases because of the reduced fundamental power density. Our results provide better understanding for the OAM conversions, which can be used to efficiently produce an optical OAM state at a short wavelength.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) in a two-dimensional periodically poled congruent LiTaO3 crystal was investigated experimentally. Multiple conical and dotted SHG have been observed, which features phase-tuned Cherenkov radiation, elastic scattering quasi-phase matching process, and random phase matching process. These results are closely connecting with the domain structure and can be utilized as characterization methods for practical purposes.

Abstract:We experimentally observed conical third harmonic generation (THG) in a two-dimensional periodically poled LiTaO3 nonlinear photonic crystal. The conical THG was attributed to cascaded quasi-phase matching (QPM) processes assisted by scattering fundamental waves in the nonlinear photonic crystal. The characteristics of the generated conical beam, such as the emit angle and beam size, varied with the fundamental wavelength because it changed the scattering-assisted QPM configuration. Our experimental results demonstrated that scattering light can be effectively involved in a cascade nonlinear optical process through QPM, which provides a possible way to produce short-wavelength conical beams to meet the demands of practical applications.

Abstract:A radio-frequency heated Czochralski technique was first used to obtain LiTa03 crystals with a modulated structure (periodic laminar ferroelectric domains). The alternation of ferroelectric domains whose half-period almost corresponds to the coherence length has been observed in doped LiTa03 crystals. The technological parameters of LiTaO3 crystals grown with a modulated structure by the RF-CZ technique have been studied in detail. Quasi-phase-matching for the nonlinear coefficient d33 has been realized using a 1.06 μ m Nd : YAG laser in LiTa03 crystals. The optical damage threshold of LiTa03 crystals by laser irradiation was measured using a focused pulse Nd :YAG laser, giving an emission at 1.06 μ m of 10 ns duration. When the estimated peak intensity was 15 GW/cm2·s, no surface and volume damage were found on the LiTaO3 crystals.

Abstract:In this letter we report the experimental result on the study of light scattering in a one-dimensional quasiperiodically poled LiTaO3 crystal. The infrared scattering signal in the crystal was upconverted into visible band by sum frequency with incident light, forming a set of coaxial conical second harmonic beam with a quasiperiodic ratio at the radius. The quasi-phase-matching significantly enhanced such a nonlinear interaction. The angular distribution of scattering light in crystal was extracted from the experimental result. This reveals a possible application of quasiperiodic structure on the study of light scattering.
