Abstract:AbstractFire safety is a significant concern for fiber-reinforced-polymer (FRP)–strengthened RC structures, particularly for indoor applications. To satisfy fire resistance requirements, fire insulation layers may be provided to protect FRP-strengthened RC members. This paper presents a simple, design-oriented method for predicting temperatures in insulated FRP-strengthened RC members under standard fire exposure. The proposed method consists of two sets of formulas: one set for predicting temperatures in unprotected FRP-strengthened RC members exposed to a standard fire; and another set to convert a fire insulation layer into an equivalent concrete layer. Abstract:In performance-based fire safety design, the fire performance of a structure needs to be accurately evaluated, which requires the accurate prediction of temperatures in the structure. While a finite-element or a finite-difference analysis may be carried out for this purpose, structural engineers generally prefer a simpler method. This paper therefore presents a simple, design-oriented method for predicting temperatures in RC beams under a standard fire exposure. Results from finite element heat transfer analysis are first examined to identify the key parameters that determine temperature distributions in RC beams. On the basis of this knowledge, a simple method in the form of handy formulae and diagrams is derived from regression analysis of finite element temperature data, with due consideration of the effects of beam geometry and fire exposure duration. The accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing its predictions with temperature data from both finite element analysis and laboratory tests. The proposed method is believed to be attractive to practicing engineers for use in the fire resistance evaluation of RC beams exposed to a standard fire because of its simplicity and accuracy.

Abstract:This paper presents finite element (FE) modeling of unprotected/insulated FRP-strengthened RC beams subjected to standard fire exposure. In the FE model, the temperature-dependent properties of concrete, steel and FRP as well as the FRP-to-concrete and the steel-to-concrete interfaces are properly considered. Comparisons between the FE predictions and the existing test data are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed FE model. Further parametric analyses revealed that, unless a very thick insulation layer is used (i. e., usually an impractical solution), the critical role of the insulation layer in FRP-strengthened RC beams is to protect the original RC beams by delaying the temperature increase of the internal steel reinforcement rather than to protect the FRP strengthening system. Therefore, the fire performance design of an insulated FRP-strengthened RC beam can be conservatively and closely approximated by that of an insulated un-strengthened RC beam.

Abstract:The fire performances of FRSCCB at both steady and transient state were analyzed based on the high-temperature mechanical properties of the Q345 fire-resistant steel produced by the Wuyang Iron and Steel Co.Ltd.in order to analyze the fire resistance time and the bending bearing capacity of fire-resistant steel-concrete composite beams (FRSCCB).The effects of the section size of concrete slab and steel beam,the load-ratio and the fire-insulation thickness of the steel beam on both the fire resistance time and the bending bearing capacity were analyzed.The simplified calculation formulas for predicting the bending bearing capacity and the fire resistance time were deduced with high accuracy compared with the finite element (FE) results.The FE results were compared with the bending bearing capacity predicted by Chinese code CECS200:2006.The code method is over conservative when the fire duration time is long.The temperature of the web is suggested to be calculated separately from that of the bottom flange.It is more reasonable to analyze the fire resistance of the FRSCCB by the improved method.

Abstract:External bonding of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites has become a popular technique for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures all over the world. So far, very little information is available on the fire performance of FRP-strengthened concrete members. The analysis presented here aims to develop a nonlinear finite element (FE) model of FRP-strengthened RC beams exposed to fire. The analysis consists of two portions: the initial portion is the calculation of the transient temperature distribution and the second portion is the structural response analysis due to the effect of thermal and mechanical load. The proposed numerical analysis is validated against proving fire tests. The results indicate that the predicted temperatures and deformations are shown to agree to the tests satisfactorily.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars are increasingly used as a substitute for steel reinforcements in the construction of concrete structures, mainly due to their excellent durability characteristics. When FRP bar-reinforced concrete (referred to as FRP-RC for simplicity) members are used in indoor applications (e.g., in buildings), the fire performance of FRP-RC members needs to be appropriately designed to satisfy safety requirements. The bond behavior between the FRP bar and the surrounding concrete governs the composite action between the two materials and the related structural performance of the FRP-RC flexural member that will be affected when exposed to fire. However, there is a lack of reliable numerical models in the literature to quantify the effect of bond degradations of the FRP bar-to-concrete interface at high temperatures on the fire performance of FRP-RC flexural members. This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of FRP-RC flexural members exposed to fire and appropriately considers the temperature-dependent bond degradations of the FRP bar-to-concrete interface at high temperatures. In addition, the thermal properties of concrete and FRP bars are considered in the heat transfer analysis to predict the cross-sectional temperatures of the FRP-RC members under fire exposure. In the FE model, the mechanical properties and constitutive laws of concrete and FRP bars at high temperatures in addition to the bond degradations between them have been properly defined, thereby accurately predicting the global and local structural responses of the FRP-RC members under fire exposure. The proposed FE model has been validated by comparing the FE predictions (both temperature and midspan deflection responses during fire exposure) and the full-scale fire test results reported in the literature. The validated FE model is then used to study the effects of bond degradations on the global and local structural responses of the FRP-RC members under fire exposure. It is proved that the temperature-dependent bond degradations need to be considered to achieve accurate predictions of the failure mode and deflection responses.

Abstract:This paper presents a finite element (FE) model for the thermo-mechanical analysis of insulated FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams exposed to fire. In the model, the effects of loading, thermal expansion of materials, and degradations in both the mechanical properties of materials and the bond behavior at FRP-to-concrete and steel-to-concrete interfaces due to elevated temperatures are all considered. The validity of the FE model is demonstrated through comparisons of FE predictions with results from existing standard fire tests on insulated FRP-strengthened RC beams.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of experimental studies conducted to investigate the fire behavior of insulated full-scale carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP)-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams is presented. Four CFRP-strengthened RC beams, respectively insulated with a thick coating system, ultrathin coating system and calcium silicate board system, were tested under ISO834 standard fire exposure. The test results revealed that satisfactory fire endurance for CFRP-strengthened concrete beams can be obtained with the protection of the three systems. The major role of fire insulation materials is to delay the failure of adhesive in the early stage and reduce the performance degradation of concrete and internal reinforced bars after the bond failure of the CFRP-concrete interface. In addition, it was indicated that effective anchorages of CFRP and reasonable anchoring constructions of the insulation system played important roles in ensuring the fire-resistant capability of CFRP-strengthened concrete beams. Further, a detailed finite element model was developed as an alternative to the standard fire test. The predicted temperature and deflection results were in good agreement with the measured ones. Based on the case studies, insulation thickness, insulation thermal conductivity, CFRP amount and load ratio were proven to be the main influences of the fire resistance of insulated CFRP-strengthened beams.

Abstract:This paper proposes three distinct fire-resistance criteria of FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete members,including temperature fire-resistance,deformation fire-resistance and load-bearing capacity fire-resistance.Then the paper presents the results of parametric studies conducted using a previously presented and partially validated numerical temperature distribution simulation model to investigate the effects of a number of parameters,such as the insulation layer thickness,thermal conductivity,specific heat,density and glass transition temperature,on the temperature fire-resistance criteria of insulated FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete beams.It is demonstrated that the insulation layer thickness,thermal conductivity and glass transition temperature are primary factors for the temperature fire-resistance of strengthened concrete beams.In addition,the calculated temperature fire-resistance results are compared with the fire test data and it is shown that the temperature fire-resistance criterion is indeed overly conservative,provided that the strengthened beam has certain residual bearing capacity.

Abstract:Concrete columns reinforced with Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebar have been increasingly used in civil engineering applications, while the research on fire resistance of such structural members is still very limited. In this paper, attempts are made to predict temperature distribution and mechanical performance of FRP rebar reinforced concrete columns in fire. The effect of concrete cover and section size on fire resistance time is studied by the finite element method. Based on a parametric study, a simple empirical formula to predict fire resistance time is proposed for possible adoption in fire resistance design.

Abstract:In the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, fire resistance design is an important issue. If fire insulation is not provided, the fire resistance of an FRP-strengthened RC beam can be approximated as that of an equivalent bare RC beam with a much higher load ratio as the mechanical resistance of the unprotected FRP strengthening system disappears within minutes of fire initiation. Due to this difference in load ratio, existing fire resistance design methods for conventional RC beams cannot be used in the fire resistance design of these equivalent bare RC beams. This paper aims to address this deficiency in existing research by presenting a reliable design method for the fire resistance of bare RC beams that provides close predictions for a wide range of load ratios, particularly those of high load ratios. Numerical results obtained using an advanced finite element approach developed by the authors are presented to examine the effects of various parameters on the fire resistance of bare RC beams, including the load ratio, the concrete cover depth, the reinforcement ratio of tension steel rebars, the distribution ratio of tension steel rebars, the cross-sectional dimensions, and the aggregate type of concrete. A design equation for predicting the fire resistance period of bare RC beams under standard fire exposure, formulated on the basis of the numerical results, is proposed. It is demonstrated that the proposed equation provides reasonably close fire resistance predictions for bare RC beams with a wide range of load ratios.

Abstract:To study the fire performances of the simply supported fire-resistant steel-concrete composite beams ( FRSCCB) , the simply supported FRSCCB with fireproof coating and fire-proof board under standard fire were simulated by the finite element ( FE) software ABAQUS. The effects of the load-ratio, the fire-insulation of the steel beam, the strength of materials, the section profiles and the diameter of longitudinal rebars in the concrete slab on the fire performance of the simply supported FRSCCB were analyzed. It is shown that the two most important factors, which influence the fire resistance for the simply supported FRSCCB, are the load-ratio and the fire-insulation thickness of the steel beam. The thicknesses of the beam plates and the width of the beam flange have favorable effect on the FRSCCB performance, but the strength of materials, the height of the beam, the thickness of the slab and diameter of the rebars have less influence. The fire-proof board has better fire-proof protection effect than the fire-proof coating under the same condition. When load ratio is 0.5~0.7, the fire-resistance limitation is increased by over 35% and the fire-insulation thickness can be decrease by 30% when the FRSCCB is used. The simplified calculation method for predicting the fire resistance limit according to Chinese code ( CECS 200:2006) is conservative compared with the FE results when the load-ratio is small.

Abstract:In the literature, there is a lack of research on the fire performance of RC beams shear- strengthened with FRP laminates. This paper for the first time presents the fire endurance tests of insulated FRP shear-strengthened RC beams. A total of seven rectangular RC beams were constructed: three were tested at ambient temperature to determine their load-bearing capacity while the remaining four were first exposed to ISO 834 standard fire for 2.5 hours. Fire endurance tests indicated that the RC beam without insulation was characterized by shear failure due to the propagation of diagonal cracks. In contrast, the insulated FRP shear-strengthened RC beams could achieve a satisfactory fire resistance of 2.5 hours with small deflection responses under fire exposure. Because the additional fire protection layer provided adequate protection, the temperature responses recorded at the FRP-to-concrete interface were less than 250 °C, while the temperatures of the steel stirrups were around 120 °C during the entire fire exposure.

Abstract:The retrofit of columns by fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) confinement has become a popular technique over the past decade but when this technique is adopted to strengthen reinforced concrete (RC) columns in buildings, the fire resistance of the strengthened column is often a serious design concern. This paper addresses the issue of assessing the fire endurance of FRP-strengthened RC columns. Since the FRP jacket loses its strength rapidly in a fire, the mechanical resistance of the FRP composite is ignored in this study, and instead attention is focused on the ability of the original RC column in resisting the design loads for the fire limit state. The paper first presents a theoretical model for the deformation and strength of RC columns in fire, which, in conjunction with a finite element method for the temperature field analysis of RC columns, can be used to predict the fire resistance of RC columns and FRP-confined RC columns with or without fire protection. Comparisons of results predicted using this model with test results show close agreement in general. The paper also presents the results of a parametric study to examine the effects on the fire endurance of RC columns of the following parameters: material strengths, section size, steel reinforcement ratio, load eccentricity ratio, depth-to-width ratio and slenderness ratio. Based on these results, a design proposal for evaluating the fire resistance of RC columns is presented. Finally, the application of this design proposal in a fire resistance assessment of an FRP-confined RC column is illustrated.

Abstract:Based on the reliable models of mechanical properties degradation of concrete,steel reinforement steel and carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) materials with increasing temperature being taken into account,the paper presents a numerical model of insulated CFRP strengthened reinforced concrete beams and a nonlinear finite element method(FEM) program(named NFACCB) of strengthened beams under exposure of fire event with the general-purpose code ANSYS.Moreover,the coupled thermo-mechanical is analyzed.The simulated results show that although CFRPs are sensitive to elevated temperature,satisfactory fire performance behaviour can be achieved by providing reasonably supplemental fire insulation.Fire insulation thickness and fire load ratio have a significant effect on fire performance of strengthened beams;while the influence of longitudinal bar reinforcement,the amount of CFRP strengthening,the thermal conductivity of insulation materials and sectional dimension are moderate;the influence of the mid-span deformations with thermal specific heat and density is the least.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of full-scale fire resistance experiments of three CFRP strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams exposed to the ISO834 standard fire. Two different supplemental fire insulation materials (thick painted fire retardant coatings and calcium silicate board claddings) are examined through standard fire tests. The effects of different fire insulation systems and end anchorage behaviour of CFRP materials on the polymer adhesive temperature,midspan deflection,failure mode,and fire-resistance rating of the strengthened RC beams are investigated. The results suggest that:when insulated with 50mm fire retardant coatings or 40mm calcium silicate board claddings,more than two hours of fire-resistance can be achieved for the loaded CFRP-strengthened RC beams; fire-resistance performance of the strengthened beams can be effectively improved by upgrading the end anchorage behaviour of CFRP materials; and the additional steel wire mesh embedded in the insulated layers can prevent the layers from cracking and dropping in fire. It is demonstrated that,not the CFRP materials,but the RC beams are the emphasis for fire insulation. Through retarding the temperature increases of the steel rebar and core concrete,the insulation materials postpone the time when the strengthened beams reach the ultimate state under fire exposure,so that better fire-resistance performance can be achieved.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of a design approach for predicting the fire resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams exposed to design fire. The proposed method is based on the energy-based time equivalence method in combination with a correction factor that is formulated as a function of concrete cover depth and compartmental characteristics. In the proposed approach, the fire resistance period of an RC beam under design fire exposure can be deduced from that of the same RC beam under standard fire exposure; the latter can be predicted using a set of explicit equations previously developed by the authors. The fire resistance data of RC beams under design fire exposure, which were used to formulate and validate the proposed approach, were generated using a reliable finite-element approach. The proposed design approach is shown to be accurate in predicting the fire resistance of RC beams under design fire exposure.

Abstract:The use of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems in the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) members has become widely accepted in recent years. A significant concern with this technique is the fire resistance of the strengthened member, for which a systematic design procedure that can be easily implemented by practicing engineers is not yet available. This paper for the first time presents such a procedure for the fire resistance design of FRP-strengthened RC beams. The proposed procedure distinguishes three levels (Level I, Level II, and Level III) of fire insulation design to satisfy the specified fire resistance rating. In Level-I design, no fire insulation is provided and the FRP system is completely ignored; the RC beam itself is expected to survive the required fire resistance period. At the other extreme is Level-III design, in which the FRP system and the original RC beam need to be so insulated that they both remain effective during the required fire resistance period. Between the two extremes is Level-II design, in which a moderate level of fire insulation is provided to protect the RC beam rather than the FRP system. Level-I and Level-III design can be realized using appropriate methods proposed by the authors in previous studies. For Level-II design, a simple design method based on the so-called 500 degrees C isotherm method is presented and assessed using numerical data generated by finite-element (FE) analyses. Although the present paper is concerned only with FRP-strengthened RC beams governed by flexural failure, the general framework presented can be readily extended to other FRP-strengthened RC components as well as FRP-strengthened RC structural systems.

Abstract:The fire performance of externally bonded (EB) carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) beams is an important issue in practical strengthening design. The cable mechanism of CFRP sheets in a fire can improve the fire endurance of the strengthened beams. This paper presents a feasible method to activate the cable mechanism of EB CFRP sheets in the strengthened beams by using appropriate insulation schemes and a mechanical anchorage system. Seven beams were constructed: three were tested at room temperature, while the remaining four were subjected to the ISO 834 standard fire. The experimental results showed that the three insulation schemes could provide reasonably good protection for the specimens, and thus all of them achieved a fire endurance of 2.5 h. The combined use of fire insulation and a mechanical anchorage system could reduce the deflection responses, mainly due to the active cable mechanism of the EB CFRP sheets during fire exposure. A finite element (FE) model was then proposed to predict the thermal and structural responses of insulated CFRP-strengthened RC beams. The FE parametric results further indicated that different insulation schemes with various thicknesses and thermal conductivities had significant effects on the fire performance of the strengthened beams.
