Abstract:Hydroxyl radicals (OH) are a key species in atmospheric photochemistry. In the lower atmosphere, up to ~30% of the primary OH radical production is attributed to the photolysis of nitrous acid (HONO), and field observations suggest a large missing source of HONO. We show that soil nitrite can release HONO and explain the reported strength and diurnal variation of the missing source. Fertilized soils with low pH appear to be particularly strong sources of HONO and OH. Thus, agricultural activities and land-use changes may strongly influence the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere. Because of the widespread occurrence of nitrite-producing microbes, the release of HONO from soil may also be important in natural environments, including forests and boreal regions.

Abstract:Abiotic release of nitrous acid (HONO) in equilibrium with soil nitrite (NO2(-)) was suggested as an important contributor to the missing source of atmospheric HONO and hydroxyl radicals (OH). The role of total soil-derived HONO in the biogeochemical and atmospheric nitrogen cycles, however, has remained unknown. In laboratory experiments, we found that for nonacidic soils from arid and arable areas, reactive nitrogen emitted as HONO is comparable with emissions of nitric oxide (NO). We show that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria can directly release HONO in quantities larger than expected from the acid-base and Henry's law equilibria of the aqueous phase in soil. This component of the nitrogen cycle constitutes an additional loss term for fixed nitrogen in soils and a source for reactive nitrogen in the atmosphere.
Large Contribution of Nitrous Acid to Soil-Emitted Reactive Oxidized Nitrogen and Its Effect on Air Quality.

Abstract:Soil emissions have long been recognized as an important source of nitric oxide (NO), which regulates atmospheric oxidative capacity and the production of air pollutants. Recent research has also indicated that nitrous acid (HONO) can be emitted in significant quantities from soil microbial activities. However, only a few studies have quantified emissions of HONO along with NO from a wide range of soil types. In this study, we measured emissions of HONO and NO from soil samples collected from 48 sites across China and found much higher emissions of HONO than of NO, especially for samples from northern China. We performed a meta-analysis of 52 field studies in China, which revealed that long-term fertilization increased the abundance of nitrite-producing genes much more than the abundance of NO-producing genes. This promotion effect was greater in northern China than in southern China. In simulations using a chemistry transport model with laboratory-derived parametrization, we found that HONO emissions had a greater effect than NO emissions on air quality. Moreover, we determined that with projected continuous reductions in anthropogenic emissions, the contribution from soils to maximum 1 h concentrations of hydroxyl radicals and ozone and daily average concentrations of particulate nitrate in the Northeast Plain will increase to 17%, 4.6%, and 14%, respectively. Our findings highlight the need to consider HONO in the assessment of the loss of reactive oxidized nitrogen from soils to the atmosphere and its effect on air quality.

Abstract:The composition of the atmosphere is influenced both directly and indirectly by biological activity. Evidence is presented here to suggest that nitrification in soil is a potentially significant source of both NO and N2O. Between 0.3 and 10% of the ammonium oxidized by cultures of the soil bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea is converted to these gases. The global source for NO associated with nitrification could be as large as 15×106 tonnes N yr−1, with a source for N2O of 5−10×106 tonnes N yr−1. Nitric oxide has a key role in tropospheric chemistry, participating in a complex set of reactions regulating OH and O3 (refs 1,2). Nitrous oxide is a dominant source of stratospheric NO (refs 3–5) and has a significant influence on climate6.

Abstract:Nitrous acid (HONO) is a precursor of the hydroxyl radical (OH), a key oxidant in the degradation of most air pollutants. Field measurements indicate a large unknown source of HONO during the day time. Release of nitrous acid (HONO) from soil has been suggested as a major source of atmospheric HONO. We hypothesize that nitrite produced by biological nitrate reduction in oxygen-limited microzones in wet soils is a source of such HONO. Indeed, we found that various contrasting soil samples emitted HONO at high water-holding capacity (75–140%), demonstrating this to be a widespread phenomenon. Supplemental nitrate stimulated HONO emissions, whereas ethanol (70% v/v) treatment to minimize microbial activities reduced HONO emissions by 80%, suggesting that nitrate-dependent biotic processes are the sources of HONO. High-throughput Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA as well as functional gene transcripts associated with nitrate and nitrite reduction indicated that HONO emissions from soil samples were associated with nitrate reduction activities of diverse Proteobacteria. Incubation of pure cultures of bacterial nitrate reducers and gene-expression analyses, as well as the analyses of mutant strains deficient in nitrite reductases, showed positive correlations of HONO emissions with the capability of microbes to reduce nitrate to nitrite. Thus, we suggest biological nitrate reduction in oxygen-limited microzones as a hitherto unknown source of atmospheric HONO, affecting biogeochemical nitrogen cycling, atmospheric chemistry, and global modeling.

Abstract:Abiotic and biotic releases of nitrous acid (HONO) from soils contribute substantially to the missing source of tropospheric HONO and hydroxyl radicals (OH). However, global and regional patterns of soil HONO emissions are rarely quantified, and the contributions of such emissions to atmospheric oxidization capacity are unclear. Here, we present that the best estimate of global soil HONO emissions in 2017 was 9.67 with a range of 7.36–11.99 Tg N yr−1, and cropland soils accounting for ∼79%. The analyses also indicate that regional soil HONO emissions enhanced ground OH concentrations by 10%–60% and ozone concentrations by 0.5–1.5 ppb in daytime in the ambient area of Shanghai, China. The impact of soil HONO emissions on OH budgets was more significant in rural than urban areas. These findings suggest that the soil HONO emissions, especially from cropland, could quicken photochemical reactions, and aggravate air pollution in rural areas.

Abstract:Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important precursor of the hydroxyl radical (OH), the atmosphere´s primary oxidant. An unknown strong daytime source of HONO is required to explain measurements in ambient air. Emissions from soils are one of the potential sources. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) have been identified as possible producers of these HONO soil emissions. However, the mechanisms for production and release of HONO in soils are not fully understood. In this study, we used a dynamic soil-chamber system to provide direct evidence that gaseous emissions from nitrifying pure cultures contain hydroxylamine (NH2OH), which is subsequently converted to HONO in a heterogeneous reaction with water vapor on glass bead surfaces. In addition to different AOB species, we found release of HONO also in ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), suggesting that these globally abundant microbes may also contribute to the formation of atmospheric HONO and consequently OH. Since biogenic NH2OH is formed by diverse organisms, such as AOB, AOA, methane-oxidizing bacteria, heterotrophic nitrifiers, and fungi, we argue that HONO emission from soil is not restricted to the nitrifying bacteria, but is also promoted by nitrifying members of the domains Archaea and Eukarya.

Abstract:Nitrous acid (HONO) significantly contributes to atmospheric hydroxyl radical (OH·) and also influences atmos-pheric oxidation capacity and air quality. Comparison of HONO concentrations measured in a field campaign and by modeling showed a large unknown HONO source during daytime. Studies have shown that the unknown HONO source can be attributed to soil emissions, a major source of atmospheric HONO. The mechanisms may be taking the form of chemical equilibrium between soil nitrite and H+, reactive uptake and displacement by soil, emissions by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and other micro-organisms, or surface reaction between hydroxylamine and H2O. Therefore, HONO flux from soils is controlled by soil nitrite concentration, pH, AOB abundance, soil minerals, soil moisture and C/N ratio. The mechanism of HONO emissions from soil has remained a point of hot discussion and few results have been reported from China. Here, we introduced the background of HONO emissions from soil, reviewed studies on the mechanisms of HONO emissions from soil and the related driving factors. This review was a relevant support for research on reducing nitrogen loss, enhancing nitrogen use efficiency,and evaluating the effects of nitrogen fertilization on environmental and urban air quality.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the most important stratospheric ozone-depleting agent based on current emissions and the third largest contributor to increased net radiative forcing. Increases in atmospheric N2O have been attributed primarily to enhanced soil N2O emissions. Critically, contributions from soils in the Northern High Latitudes (NHL, >50°N) remain poorly quantified despite their vulnerability to permafrost thawing induced by climate change. An ensemble of six terrestrial biosphere models suggests NHL soil N2O emissions doubled since the preindustrial 1860s, increasing on average by 2.0±1.0 Gg N yr-1 (p<0.01). This trend reversed after the 1980s because of reduced nitrogen fertilizer application in non-permafrost regions and increased plant growth due to CO2 fertilization suppressed emissions. However, permafrost soil N2O emissions continued increasing attributable to climate warming; the interaction of climate warming and increasing CO2 concentrations on nitrogen and carbon cycling will determine future trends in NHL soil N2O emissions.
Nitrite stimulates HONO and NOx but not N2O emissions in Chinese agricultural soils during nitrification

Abstract:The long-lived greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) and short-lived reactive nitrogen (Nr) gases such as ammonia (NH3), nitrous acid (HONO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are produced and emitted from fertilized soils and play a critical role for climate warming and air quality. However, only few studies have quantified the production and emission potentials for long- and short-lived gaseous nitrogen (N) species simultaneously in agricultural soils. To link the gaseous N species to intermediate N compounds [ammonium (NH4+), hydroxylamine (NH2OH), and nitrite (NO2-)] and estimate their temperature change potential, ex-situ dry-out experiments were conducted with three Chinese agricultural soils. We found that HONO and NOx (NO + NO2) emissions mainly depend on NO2-, while NH3 and N2O emissions are stimulated by NH4+ and NH2OH, respectively. Addition of 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) and acetylene significantly reduced HONO and NOx emissions, while NH3 emissions were significantly enhanced in an alkaline Fluvo-aquic soil. These results suggested that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and complete ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (comammox Nitrospira) dominate HONO and NOx emissions in the alkaline Fluvo-aquic soil, while ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) are dominant in the acidic Mollisol. DMPP effectively mitigated the warming effect in the Fluvo-aquic soil and the Ultisol. In conclusion, our findings highlight NO2- significantly stimulates HONO and NOx emissions from dryland agricultural soils, dominated by nitrification. In addition, subtle differences of soil NH3, N2O, HONO, and NOx emissions indicated different N turnover processes, and should be considered in biogeochemical and atmospheric chemistry models.

Abstract:Nitrite is an intermediary compound formed during nitrification as well as denitrifiication. It occasionally accumulates in soils and drainage water. The nitrite can then undergo transformations to gaseous nitrogen compounds such as NO and NO2. Soil pH controls the abiotic nitrite decomposition to a large extent. Under acidic conditions(pH <5.5), nitrous acid spontaneously decomposes preferentially to NO and NO2. Nitrite also undergoes reactions with metallic cations (especially ferrous iron) and with organic matter. As a result of these reactions gaseous compounds such as NO, NO2, N2O and CH3ONO can be formed. Through reaction of nitrite with phenolic compounds nitroand nitrosocompounds can be formed, building up organic N. With normal agricultural practices on slightly acidic soils, the nitrite instability usually does not lead to economically important N losses from soils. However, the compounds formed through its degradation or interaction with other soil constituents are linked to environmental problems such as tropospheric ozone formation, acid rain, the greenhouse effect and the destruction of the stratospheric ozone.

Abstract:Abstract Global potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from soil are accelerating, with increases in the proportion of reactive nitrogen emitted as N 2 O, i.e., N 2 O emission factor (EF). Yet, the primary controls and underlying mechanisms of EFs remain unresolved. Based on two independent but complementary global syntheses, and three field studies determining effects of acidity on N 2 O EFs and soil denitrifying microorganisms, we show that soil pH predominantly controls N 2 O EFs and emissions by affecting the denitrifier community composition. Analysis of 5438 paired data points of N 2 O emission fluxes revealed a hump-shaped relationship between soil pH and EFs, with the highest EFs occurring in moderately acidic soils that favored N 2 O-producing over N 2 O-consuming microorganisms, and induced high N 2 O emissions. Our results illustrate that soil pH has a unimodal relationship with soil denitrifiers and EFs, and the net N 2 O emission depends on both the N 2 O/(N 2 O + N 2 ) ratio and overall denitrification rate. These findings can inform strategies to predict and mitigate soil N 2 O emissions under future nitrogen input scenarios.

Abstract:Nitric oxide (NO) is an intra- and intercellular gaseous signaling molecule with a broad spectrum of regulatory functions in biological system. Its emissions are produced by both natural and anthropogenic sources; however, soils are among the most important sources of NO. Nitric oxide plays a decisive role in environmental-atmospheric chemistry by controlling the tropospheric photochemical production of ozone and regulates formation of various oxidizing agents such as hydroxyl radical (OH), which contributes to the formation of acid of precipitates. Consequently, for developing strategies to overcome the deleterious impact of NO on terrestrial ecosystem, it is mandatory to have reliable information about the exact emission mechanism and processes involved in its transformation in soil-atmospheric system. Although the formation process of NO is a complex phenomenon and depends on many physicochemical characteristics, such as organic matter, soil pH, soil moisture, soil temperature, etc., this review provides comprehensive updates about the emission characteristics and biogeochemical transformation mechanism of NO. Moreover, this article will also be helpful to understand the processes involved in the consumption of NO in soils. Further studies describing the functions of NO in biological system are also discussed.

Abstract:Soil bacteria could be one of the important sources for ambient HONO. However, the HONO emission from soil bacteria over North China Plain (NCP) with vast croplands has not yet been evaluated. In this study, high-resolution simulations are created to explore the HONO emission from soil bacteria over NCP and related influences on atmospheric chemistry. Ground measurements of critical air pollutants including O3, HONO, and PM2.5 compositions are incorporated to constrain the model simulations. Results show that abundant HONO is emitted from soil bacteria over NCP during summertime and the emission rate varies dramatically for different areas (about 0.2 kg km−2 d−1 - 2.0 kg km−2 d−1). The HONO emission rate presents clear diurnal cycles with peaks of 1.5 kg km−2 d−1 in the afternoon and valleys of 0.4 kg km−2 d−1 during the early morning hours. The resulting HONO concentration ranges from 0.2 μg m−3 to 1.4 μg m−3, which predominates the total HONO concentration in ambient air, particularly in western NCP. The soil bacteria source can significantly alter the diurnal cycles of ambient HONO and OH concentrations over NCP, but only slightly change O3 and PM2.5 concentrations via participating photochemistry and secondary aerosol formations. These results highlight the pressing need for the involvement of HONO emission from soil bacteria in modeling studies regarding atmospheric chemistry, particularly in rural areas.

Abstract:Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important precursor of the hydroxyl radical (OH) and plays a vital role in atmospheric photochemistry and nitrogen cycling. Soil emissions have been considered as a potential source of HONO. Lately, the HONO emission via soil-atmosphere exchange (E SA-exchange ) from soil nitrite has been validated and quantified through chamber experiments, but has not been assessed in the real atmosphere. We coupled E SA-exchange and the other seven potential sources of HONO (i.e., traffic, indoor and soil bacterial emissions, heterogeneous reactions on ground and aerosol surfaces, nitrate photolysis, and acid displacement) into the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), and found that diurnal variations of the soil emission flux at the Wangdu site were well simulated. During the non-fertilization period, E SA-exchange contributed ∼28 % and ∼35 % of nighttime and daytime HONO, respectively, and enhanced the net ozone (O 3 ) production rate by ∼8 % across the North China Plain (NCP). During the preintensive/intensive fertilization period, the maximum E SA-Exchange contributions attained ∼70 %/83 % of simulated HONO in the afternoon across the NCP, definitely asserting its dominance in HONO production. E SA-Exchange enhanced the OH production rate via HONO photolysis by ∼3.5/7.0 times, and exhibited an increase rate of ∼13 %/20 % in the net O 3 production rate across the NCP. The total enhanced O 3 due to the eight potential HONO sources ranged from ∼2 to 20 ppb, and E SA-exchange produced O 3 enhancements of ∼1 to 6 ppb over the three periods. Remarkably, the average contribution of E SA-exchange to the total O 3 enhancements remained ∼30 %. This study suggests that E SA-exchange should be included in three-dimensional chemical transport models and more field measurements of soil HONO emission fluxes and soil nitrite levels are urgently required.

Abstract:Soil is a major source of nitrogen trace gases (NTGs). Microbial denitrification has long been identified as a source of NTGs under reducing conditions, whereas the production of NTGs during nitrification is far from being completely understood. This review updates information about the role of abiotic processes in the formation of gaseous N products in soil and brings attention to the potential interplay of microbial and chemical soil processes that tend to be neglected in research on NTG emissions. Several reactions that involve the nitrification intermediates, nitrite (NO2−) and hydroxylamine (NH2OH), are known to produce the NTGs nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These abiotic reactions are: the self‐decomposition of NO2−, reactions of NO2− with reduced metal cations, nitrosation of soil organic matter (SOM) by NO2−, the reaction between NO2− and NH2OH, and the oxidation of NH2OH by Fe3+ or MnO2. These reactions can occur over a broad range of soil characteristics, but they are disregarded in most current research on NTG studies in favour of biological processes only. Relatively few studies have tried to quantify the contribution of abiotic processes to total NTG emissions, which results in uncertainty in emission models and mitigation strategies. It is difficult to discriminate between biological and abiotic sources because both processes can proceed at the same time in the same soil layer. The potential of stable isotope techniques to disentangle the different processes in soil and to constrain budgets of atmospheric NTGs better are highlighted. Recent advances in stable isotope technologies, such as infrared real‐time laser spectroscopy, provide considerable potential for both natural abundance and tracer studies in this field.

Abstract:Although it is well established that soils are the dominating source for atmospheric nitrous oxide (N 2 O), we are still struggling to fully understand the complexity of the underlying microbial production and consumption processes and the links to biotic (e.g. inter- and intraspecies competition, food webs, plant–microbe interaction) and abiotic (e.g. soil climate, physics and chemistry) factors. Recent work shows that a better understanding of the composition and diversity of the microbial community across a variety of soils in different climates and under different land use, as well as plant–microbe interactions in the rhizosphere, may provide a key to better understand the variability of N 2 O fluxes at the soil–atmosphere interface. Moreover, recent insights into the regulation of the reduction of N 2 O to dinitrogen (N 2 ) have increased our understanding of N 2 O exchange. This improved process understanding, building on the increased use of isotope tracing techniques and metagenomics, needs to go along with improvements in measurement techniques for N 2 O (and N 2 ) emission in order to obtain robust field and laboratory datasets for different ecosystem types. Advances in both fields are currently used to improve process descriptions in biogeochemical models, which may eventually be used not only to test our current process understanding from the microsite to the field level, but also used as tools for up-scaling emissions to landscapes and regions and to explore feedbacks of soil N 2 O emissions to changes in environmental conditions, land management and land use.

Abstract:A prominent source of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), nitrous acid (HONO) plays a key role in tropospheric chemistry. Apart from direct emission, HONO (or its conjugate base nitrite, NO2-) can be formed secondarily in the atmosphere. Yet, how secondary HONO forms requires elucidation, especially for heterogeneous processes involving numerous organic compounds in atmospheric aerosols. We investigated nitrite production from aqueous photolysis of nitrate for a range of conditions (pH, organic compound, nitrate concentration, and cation). Upon adding small oxygenates such as ethanol, n-butanol, or formate as •OH scavengers, the average intrinsic quantum yield of nitrite [Φ(NO2-)] was 0.75 ± 0.15%. With near-UV-light-absorbing vanillic acid (VA), however, the effective Φ(NO2-) was strongly pH-dependent, reaching 8.0 ± 2.1% at a pH of 8 and 1.5 ± 0.39% at a more atmospherically relevant pH of 5. Our results suggest that brown carbon (BrC) may greatly enhance the nitrite production from the aqueous nitrate photolysis through photosensitizing reactions, where the triplet excited state of BrC may generate solvated electrons, which reduce nitrate to NO2 for further conversion to nitrite. This photosensitization process by BrC chromophores during nitrate photolysis under mildly acidic conditions may partly explain the missing HONO in urban environments.
