Abstract:The grand "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI), comprising various routes by land and by sea, is a globally oriented outreach strategy intended to connect China with the world. Essentially, the BRI is about global outreach, connecting the world with China as the core hub. The initiative is known in Chinese as "Yi Dai Yi Lu" ("One Belt, One Road") but in practice, it encompasses multiple routes along the BRI, connecting various specific countries and regions, transportation modes and industrial sectors. China has the financial resources, the technology, the manpower, and most importantly, the political will and strategic vision to support infrastructure development in developing countries. Nevertheless, the BRI is currently at a crossroads. The tremendous enthusiasm for the promise of increased infrastructure connectivity and trade promotion under this initiative has begun to subside. Indeed, the implementation of the BRI has faced various practical issues and serious challenges.

Abstract:<p>Much larger than the U.S. Marshall Plan, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), with over $5 trillion global infrastructure projects, is a major undertaking by the international communities, proposed by the Chinese government. Adopting a multimethod approach of employing textual analysis, participant observation, and framing analysis, this article uncovers that Chinese government and state‐run media promote BRI with proper rhetorical frames and institutional facilitators. The six frames are "Development," "Mutual respect and mutual trust," "Ancient Silk Road Story," "Action Speaks Louder than Words," "China is a Partner, not a Colonialist," and "Win‐Win." Since 1949 and especially in the past two decades, China has cultivated a global ecosystem with at least nine facilitators that support BRI. These facilitators are Chinese Soft Power, South–South Cooperation, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China & ASEAN FTA, RCEP, 16+1, AIIB, Silk Road Fund, and The New Development Bank. With BRI, China leads a new wave of globalization: Globalization 5.0. This article proposes a three‐step strategy for Western companies to benefit from the China‐led Belt and Road Initiative: from rising above pre‐existing frames in your mind (stereotypes), to be open minded for new frames (new thinking), to participate in BRI for win–win outcomes (opportunities).</p>

Abstract:Since the Belt and Road Initiative was brought up in 2013, a wide variety of mechanisms and platforms under its framework have sprung up, which actively led the initiative to a deeper and more practical fashion. OECD, WEF and other mechanisms and platforms with long-accumulated experience can inspire the initiative in building its cooperation system. In order to promote the system, we need to highlight the leading, professional, practical, popularity and justice-based characteristics of those mechanisms and platforms, to connect with which advanced ideas and institutions should be integrated dynamically into the process.

Abstract:China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a call for an open and inclusive (mutually beneficial) model of cooperative economic, political and cultural exchange (globalization) that draws on the deep-seated meanings of the ancient Silk Roads. While it reflects China’s rise as a global power, and its industrial redeployment, increased outward investment and need to diversify energy sources and routes, the BRI involves the establishment of a framework for open cooperation and new multilateral financial instruments designed to lay the infrastructural and industrial foundations to secure and solidify China’s relations with countries along the Silk Roads and to extend the march of modernization and poverty reduction to emerging countries.

Abstract:<p>The primary objective of this study is to present the background and overview of the Chinese belt and road initiative (BRI) project while exploring views, opinions, skepticisms, and challenges related to this initiative. President Xi Jinping initiated the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the 21st‐century Maritime Silk Road (MSR) to boost regional cooperation, which was later officially named as the One Built One Road (OBOR) or BRI. To this date, more than 65 nations from Asia, Europe, and Northeast Africa have joined the "BRI," to revive the old silk road. In an official document, "the Vision and Action of the OBOR," China plans to realize five cooperation and development plans, comprising of six intercontinental economic corridors. These projects are expected to bring collective economic growth in BRI member economies while keeping China at the heart of such development. The five main facets of "OBOR" cooperation include infrastructure connectivity, policy communications, finance, trade, and people‐to‐people bonds to encourage regional cooperation and mutual growth.</p>

Abstract:China's outbound investment exceeded inbound investment for the first time in 2015. In years leading up this transition, a maturing demographic transition alongside slowing internal migration and diminishing returns to physical capital investment, all had a role in China's diminished competitiveness in low‐wage manufactured exports and the fading of the related growth model. In that context, the 2013 launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) took place in two stages in two developing countries, Kazakhstan and Indonesia. These launch choices, and the BRI in general are herein elaborated in terms of economic history, geography, and demography. The BRI in turn is considered to be aiming to foster the ongoing development of China, and in doing so also seeks to instigate new era development opportunity for other developing countries. One facilitation channel for the latter is China's concept of “patient capital,” essentially concessional capital, or foreign aid. For China that offers a means via which to internationalise the financial sector and also the Renminbi. Lessons from China's own use of foreign aid and economic development hence serve as an important reference for ongoing scoping of the shape and trajectory of the BRI. To that end, this article sheds light on what is in the BRI for China.

Abstract:This article is written for a general audience of economists, including those who have a novice understanding of this subject. China continues to become more important in the community of nations. In order\to promote further internationalization of China’s influence, major strategies are being pursued. The focus of this article is the implementation of the ambitious program of the Belt Road Initiative (BRI). Within China, this program is called One Belt One Road (Chinese: 一带一路; pinyin: Yīdài Yīlù) or OBOR for short. This is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to invest in more than 150 countries and international organizations (World Bank, 2019). This article states that China benefits from the BRI and it was found that lower- and middle-income countries are more inclined to join the BRI, in comparison to high income countries This tendency is not 100 percent true. Simultaneously, there is the effort to increase the use of Chinese Renminbi (RMB) in transactions between all nations. (Chinese yuan is another phrase for RMB.) The Chinese RMB already has attained the status of reserve currency (Gentle, 2016). Of course, there is a lot of synergy between the implementation of the BRI and other means for increasing the international presence of China. This article asks the research question of does the BRI increase China’s international presence in the BRI? The answer is yes, considering the many countries, organizations and projects involved in the BRI. Tables in this article convey this information. This article may serve as a broad introduction to the BRI. The reader can thus move on to explore what other researchers have done on this issue.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a potentially transformational geopolitical development initiative, launched by China, which encompasses 65 countries, accounting for roughly 32 percent of global GDP, 39 percent of global merchandize trade, and 63 percent of the world’s population. The BRI, also referred to as the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the twenty-first century Maritime Silk Road (MSR), is a geopolitical initiative put forth by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which goes well beyond building infrastructure along the ancient “silk road.” The initiative seeks to develop a wide network of connectivity and cooperation spanning the entire Eurasian land mass and parts of Africa, including Central Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North and East Africa. The magnitude of investments anticipated under the BRI is massive. According to the Chinese government, US$890 billion worth of investments have already been disbursed under the BRI umbrella, with an expected total Chinese investment of US$4 trillion over the course of the initiative. Developments suggest that BRI could ultimately evolve beyond a mere Chinese-financed initiative. However, the bulk of BRI-related investments still appear to be conceived, driven, and primarily financed by China and financial institutions controlled by Beijing. This could change, however, as national governments that host BRI projects, multilateral institutions, and private sector gets more actively involved.

Africa has unique advantages such as abundant strategic resources and considerable market potential, and has become the focus of major countries. Strengthening China-Africa cooperation is of great significance to building a new type of international relations and building a community with a shared future for mankind. In recent years, China has become a major force in promoting Africa’s development. With its huge size and increasing strategic influence, China is playing an increasingly important role in global development with global development initiatives and the Belt and Road Initiative as its starting point. This is especially true in Africa: activities such as Chinese investment in Africa, as well as cooperation with other countries such as the United States, will enhance the capacity of low-income African countries to achieve sustainable development.

Abstract:Building on the tradition, promises, and advances brought by the historical Silk Road, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by the Chinese government in 2013, has a profound impact on international business and the established forms of international collaboration. Exploiting the advantages of liberalization of trade in goods, services, capital, and public procurement, BRI will benefit the Chinese economy. At the same time, it will prompt substantial changes in the field of international business, e.g., by means of fostering business to business (B2B) and peer to peer (P2P) collaboration. It will also influence patterns of Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI). Geography plays a role in BRI; geopolitics is also in the cards. Given the profound implications BRI is likely to generate in the fields of businesses, economy, society, and politics, it is imperative to frame and streamline the discussion to identify the key mechanisms and causal relationships that it induces. This is precisely what this Special Issue sought to do.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative（BRI） has effectively promoted the connectivity of countries along the route andinjected vitality into their economic growth. This article summarizes the achievements of the BRI over the pastdecade, analyzes the existing problems, clarifies the challenges faced in the domestic and foreign environmentalchanges, and provides suggestions for promoting the initiative under the new development pattern. It emphasizesthe construction principles of openness, greenness, and integrity, as well as high standards, people-centeredness,and sustainability. These principles are the guarantee of effectively dealing with external interference, improvingrisk prevention ability and the project construction benefits. The article suggests the establishment of mechanismsfor facilitating and liberalizing trade and investment, and clarifies key countries and sectors for the BRI in thenew situation and new pattern. The authors also propose enhancing domestic foundations of the initiative throughhigher-level independent and institutional opening up.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to assess the effect of strategies of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on sustainable economic development of member countries. This study is based on qualitative approach and secondary data. A number of documents such as journal article s , government reports, book s , book chapters and working papers have been consulted to substantiate the arguments. The article explores that there is a potential effect of BRI on the sustainable economic development of its member countries. Some of the member countries are getting direct benefit s from it and other countries are in the way of getting benefit s through infrastructure development, trading, cultural exchanges and mutual political agreements. It is empowering a number of developing countries through economic development by linking economic corridors, seaport, roads and railway networks. This article also finds that so many economic zones are planned to open in member countries to get benefit s from BRI initiative by promoting infrastructure, energy, gas, oil and electricity, roads, railways and other related projects.

Abstract:China, a rising global power, proposed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013 as a development cooperation framework to fulfill its responsibility for assisting other developing countries. The initiative, based on China's experiences and strength, focuses on infrastructure and is enthusiastically received by both developing countries and multilateral development institutions as infrastructure is the bottleneck for growth in most developing countries. Abstract:Despite the prosperity and long continuity in history, the ancient Silk Road was weakened in recent centuries. Only with the end of the Cold War, there come the chances for its revival. The launch of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013 by the Chinese coincided with the development strategy change of China, but the Initiative has just still been an initiative open to be substantiated by future policies and changes in China and overseas. The early focus has been on infrastructure investments. On the basis of existing railways, China has developed with European and Central Asian cities an ever-intensifying network of scheduled freight trains to carry out and promote long-distance trade along the old Silk Road routes. Lately, the overland routes have developed intermodal services to revive the traditional linkages between overland Silk Road and maritime Silk Road. Also, a new transport connectivity facilitated by China-funded railway investments has evolved, for example, in Eastern Europe and East Africa and China investment agreements on the development of economic corridors in Pakistan and Myanmar. There have been and could be criticisms and skepticisms about the Belt and Road Initiative. The infrastructure facilities built under the Initiative would definitely enhance local and regional connectivity of the host countries, and when combined with attempts at local industrialization, facilitated by the new opportunities of trade and exchanges, and funded by China or otherwise, it would offer the best chance for lifting the local populations out of the trap of isolation, poverty, and marginalization.

Abstract:China’s project of the century- Belt and Road Initiative - is a signature foreign policy project of President Xi Jinping. Launched in 2013, BRI contains two components- overland belt connecting China with Central Asia, Russia, South Asia and Europe, and Maritime Silk Road for enhancing connectivity, and maritime cooperation linking Chinese ports with Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. BRI wraps up these two initiatives in it and intends to cover the number of countries along the route that happens to be the biggest market in the world with enormous potentials for trade and investment cooperation. BRI has both economic and strategic messages behind a massive infrastructure plan covering a vast network of connectivity linking 60 countries. BRI has sparked a variety of responses, some welcoming and supporting it, some expressing reservations, some willing to participate “for shaping the outcome from within”, and some wanting it to firmly match the international standards of transparency, openness, and the fiscal soundness of the country. Nepal formally became a part of BRI by signing a Memorandum of Understanding on Framework Agreement in May 2017 for enhancing more connectivity and integration, though Nepal is not included in any of the six economic corridors unveiled by China. China recently suggesting Nepal to trim projects from 35 to 9 reflects the standard of the work done by the Nepali government and its lack of preparedness and seriousness. Infrastructure development is key to progress and prosperity. As China remains engaged in improving connectivity in the neighborhood, there is a great optimism about BRI in Nepal. Against this background, this article looks at the significance of BRI, examines past attempts made at connectivity, responses to BRI and Nepal's participation in it.

Abstract:In 2013, China launched its ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) as a major effort to enhance international trade and economic development. An important feature of the BRI is that it supports free trade regimes and a world economy based upon open regional cooperation. The concept of BRI involves establishing a transport route between China and participating countries to provide more profitable trade and investment corridors. There are few comprehensive studies examining the social and environmental impact on development in recipient countries. To address this gap, this study gathered empirical evidence on railroad projects in three key countries: Indonesia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The comparative analysis revealed that while political leaders signed agreements that welcomed China’s BRI in support of their national transport development plans, the implementation of these ambitious infrastructure projects faced significant management and operational challenges that had not been foreseen by the Chinese partners. More effective implementation of BRI infrastructure projects in the future will require better understandings of governance, specifically through harmonization with the cultural, institutional and political contexts in partner countries. Social and cultural characteristics of the countries where Chinese firms are working need to be well understood if sustainable and inclusive benefits from the BRI infrastructure projects are to be delivered. Further research on the benefits gained by local people living in the areas affected by the BRI investments is needed.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the largest geostrategic venture ever and promises to connect Asia, Europe and Africa with each other through building rail, road and maritime infrastructure, and through harmonising participating states’ customs, trade regulations and standards. Having most of the member countries of Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) involved in the initiative, it is expected to substantially transform economic and political relations in the region. The BRI is promising to bring Chinese development success achieved at the sub-national levels to other developing states. Based on the discourse analysis of relevant documents and speeches of Chinese leaders, this study shows that the BRI as a multidimensional global initiative pursues geostrategic goals, but economic development remains as its core objective.

Abstract:Introduced by President Xi Jinping in 2013, the Belt and Road is China’s new initiative on international business and foreign affairs, in order to promote mutual political trust, economic integration and cultural inclusion among countries along the Belt and Road by enhancing connectivity, infrastructure and trade. For many of those Asian and European countries, the low economic development levels and backwards infrastructures are impeding their economic growth. This new type of international development corporation, in the short-term, can create jobs and stimulate growth for them, and improve their economic growth potential in the long run. This changes the development assistance by “blood transfusion” from developed countries to the new development cooperation mode of “blood generation”. The infrastructure construction in developing countries also contributes to global economic recovery, which benefits both the developing and developed world, making it a new win-win mode of international development cooperation.

Abstract:Abstract The Chinese Belt and Road Initiative ( bri ) is a state-driven development campaign that promote economic integration and infrastructure building across Eurasia and beyond, aiming to reconnect countries and revive the prosperity of the historical Silk Road region. Since its inception in 2013, there has been a growing literature surrounding the initiative, yet the studies of education within the bri context remain relatively under-researched. This paper aims to explore such connection by undertaking the task through a combination of policy review, semi-structured interviews, and empirical fieldwork data. It adopts a Cultural Political Economy theoretical framework to analyzes how education policy and practice has been positioned, constructed, and coordinated in relation to the wider cultural political economy in assisting the bri planning and development. Against the background of China’s resurgence as a global power and its ambition in reinvigorating the Silk Road, I argue that the strategic positioning of education into the bri represents a constructive force in imagining, empowering, and materializing the New Silk Road Project. This reveals education and its multifaced properties in promoting cultural outreach, fulfilling political obligation, and accelerating economic growth in line with the overall bri building.

Abstract:Whilst China's aid and development model has been traditionally understood as divergent from the dominant post‐1945 liberal development model, scholars are also increasingly exploring convergence between features of the two development models. Recently, scholars from a range of disciplines including development studies, development geography and international (business, environment and legal) studies have explored a process whereby China's Belt and Road Initiative and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals converge ('BRI‐SDG integration'). This paper brings these multidisciplinary strands of scholarship together and places them in dialogue with social sciences convergence theory to understand how BRI‐SDG integration aligns with or challenges previous conceptualisations of Chinese‐dominant development convergence. The paper first demonstrates that BRI‐SDG integration proposes a novel and deliberate convergence process ‐ which the paper names 'complementary convergence'. However, BRI‐SDG integration also underscores the need for more multidirectional frameworks that reject Eurocentricity for evaluating the contemporary Chinese‐dominant relationship, and an enhanced focus on how China is influencing dominant development institutions. Finally, BRI‐SDG integration reiterates the methodological difficulties of delineating between 'development models' in an increasingly interrelated global governance of development.
