Abstract:Advanced functional materials, drives and transmissions, sensors and mechanisms provide solid foundations for developing intelligent robots, for which modelling and simulation tools have contributed greatly to these developments, and facilitated deployments and applications of intelligent robots. Motivated by rapid developments of sensor fusion, intelligent control and machine learning tools and their widely availability at low cost, this special issue aims at disseminating new modelling and simulation methods for developing intelligent robotic systems and their applications. With the emerging applications to robotics, this focused section competitively selects the 10 research papers covering a spectrum of modeling of novel single robots, human-robot interactive systems, and even robotic automation process, which includes modeling of biped and wearable robots, parallel mechanisms, autonomous robots, and robot-environment interaction, as well as modeling with robot visions.

Abstract:The integration of process design and control (IPDC) has become increasingly important and received considerable academic and practitioner attention over the recent decades. Moreover, some works in the field have utilized advanced controllers into IPDC framework. Considering the fact that the hierarchical control structure which consists of local PID controllers and an advanced process control (APC) as the central controller has been used widely in industrial practice, in this paper, the two-level hierarchical control structure is taken into account within the IPDC framework for the first time. The IPDC problem using hierarchical control structure is formulated as a bi-level optimization problem, which separates the design decisions from the APC decisions and then keeps the problem size manageable. And the APC decisions are incorporated in a superstructure-based dynamic optimization formulation which considers both cost and controllability. A continuous stirred tank reactor is used to test the proposed IPDC methodology.

Abstract:There is a strong trend in modern industrial systems to integrate computation, communication, and control theories into networked control systems (NCSs). This is anticipated to be the next wave in the information technology revolution. From a control perspective, the interdisciplinary relationship between computation, communication and control is illustrated through control loop timing analysis of NCSs. Critical issues in the emerging field of integrated computation, communication and control (ICCC) are discussed. Since it is difficult to analytically quantify the impacts of computation and communication constraints on the quality of control (QoC), a simulation-based approach is proposed. A numerical example of networked DC motor control is utilized in simulations, with different scheduling schemes and communication protocols employed. Results and analysis give valuable suggests for improving the control performance of NCSs which feature the integration of control with computation and communication.

Abstract:Deep research and communicating new trends in the design, control and applications of the real time control of intelligent sensors systems using advanced intelligent control methods and techniques is the main purpose of this research. The innovative multi-sensor fusion techniques, integrated through the Versatile Intelligent Portable (VIP) platforms are developed, combined with computer vision, virtual and augmented reality (VR&AR) and intelligent communication, including remote control, adaptive sensor networks, human-robot (H2R) interaction systems and machine-to-machine (M2M) interfaces. Intelligent decision support systems (IDSS), including remote sensing, and their integration with DSS, GA-based DSS, fuzzy sets DSS, rough sets-based DSS, intelligent agent-assisted DSS, process mining integration into decision support, adaptive DSS, computer vision based DSS, sensory and robotic DSS, are highlighted in the field of advanced intelligent control.

Abstract:This paper systematically introduces the origin, development, and the state-of-the-art of artificial intelligence, and from the viewpoint of control, elaborates the possible problems, challenges, and opportunities when applying artificial intelligence to control systems.We highlight the importance of intelligent algorithms and simulations in intelligent control, and emphasize that the core of intelligent control is the control algorithms constructed via artificial intelligence.We discuss the relations between artificial intelligence and the classic control theory.We further state that classic control and intelligent control do not conflict and thus should cooperate with each other.We should thoroughly investigate the merits, disadvantages, and feasible scenarios of classic control and intelligent control, to ensure that one can complement the other.Finally, we provide some suggestions on presenting novel intelligent control methods, establishing simulation platforms of intelligent control, and setting up multidisciplinary joint research centers.

Abstract:Intelligent micromachines, with dimensions ranging from a few millimeters down to hundreds of nanometers, are miniature systems capable of performing specific tasks autonomously at small scales. Enhancing the intelligence of micromachines to tackle the uncertainty and variability in complex microenvironments has applications in minimally invasive medicine, bioengineering, water cleaning, analytical chemistry, and more. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the construction of intelligent micromachines, evolving from simple micromachines to soft, compound, reconfigurable, encodable, multifunctional, and integrated micromachines, as well as from individual to multiagent, multiscale, hierarchical, self-organizing, and swarm micromachines. The field leverages two important trends in robotics research—the miniaturization and intelligentization of machines—but a compelling combination of these two features has yet to be realized. The core technologies required to make such tiny machines intelligent include information media, transduction, processing, exchange, and energy supply, but embedding all of these functions into a system at the micro- or nanoscale is challenging. This article offers a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art technologies used to create intelligence for micromachines and provides insight into the construction of next-generation intelligent micromachines that can adapt to diverse scenarios for use in emerging fields. A Novel Adaptive Controller for Robot Manipulators based on Active Inference

Abstract:More adaptive controllers for robot manipulators are needed, which can deal with large model uncertainties. This paper presents a novel active inference controller (AIC) as an adaptive control scheme for industrial robots. This scheme is easily scalable to high degrees-of-freedom, and it maintains high performance even in the presence of large unmodeled dynamics. The proposed method is based on active inference, a promising neuroscientific theory of the brain, which describes a biologically plausible algorithm for perception and action. In this work, we formulate active inference from a control perspective, deriving a model-free control law which is less sensitive to unmodeled dynamics. The performance and the adaptive properties of the algorithm are compared to a state-of-the-art model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) in an experimental setup with a real 7-DOF robot arm. The results showed that the AIC outperformed the MRAC in terms of adaptability, providing a more general control law. This confirmed the relevance of active inference for robot control.

A Fairness-Oriented Control Framework for Safety-Critical Multi-Robot Systems: Alternative Authority Control

Abstract:This paper proposes a fair control framework for multi-robot systems, which integrates the newly introduced Alternative Authority Control (AAC) and Flexible Control Barrier Function (F-CBF). Control authority refers to a single robot which can plan its trajectory while considering others as moving obstacles, meaning the other robots do not have authority to plan their own paths. The AAC method dynamically distributes the control authority, enabling fair and coordinated movement across the system. This approach significantly improves computational efficiency, scalability, and robustness in complex environments. The proposed F-CBF extends traditional CBFs by incorporating obstacle shape, velocity, and orientation. F-CBF enhances safety by accurate dynamic obstacle avoidance. The framework is validated through simulations in multi-robot scenarios, demonstrating its safety, robustness and computational efficiency.

Such a hardware configuration enables the control of the overall system to be constructed in the same way as what a human brain normally does - seamless integration of the fast reaction (or instantaneous feedback reaction) to immediate feedback information and the slow learning utilizing large amount of stored past information that is available in the computer based control systems. The theoretically solid nonlinear adaptive robust control (ARC) theory that has been developed recently well reflects such an intuitive integrated design philosophy of human brains, and has been experimentally demonstrated achieving better control performance than existing nonlinear robust controls (e.g., sliding mode controls) or nonlinear adaptive controls in a number of motion control applications. This paper is to expose motion control engineers to the essences of such an advanced nonlinear control design methodology. Some recent ARC research results are discussed as well. The precision motion control of a linear motor driven high-speed/high-acceleration X-Y positioning stage is used as a case study and comparative experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance and practical benefits that can be achieved by the proposed ARC approach in implementation.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly popular tool in more and more areas of technology. New challenges in control systems design and application are related to increased productivity, control flexibility, and processing of big data. Some kinds of systems require autonomy in real-time decision-making, while the other ones may serve as an essential factor in human-robot interaction and human influences on system performance. Naturally, the complex tasks of controlling technical systems require new modern solutions, but there remains an inextricable link between control theory and artificial intelligence. The first part of the present survey is devoted to the main intelligent control methods in technical systems. Among them, modern methods of adaptive and optimal control, fuzzy logic, and machine learning are considered. In its second part, the crucial achievements in intelligent control applications in robotic and mechatronic systems over the past decade are considered. The references are structured according to the type of such common control problems as stabilization, controller tuning, identification, parametric optimization, iterative learning, and prediction. In the conclusion, the main problems and tendencies toward intelligent control methods improvement are outlined.

Abstract:This paper introduces a distributed and intelligent control system suitable for China's discrete manufacturing industry. In this paper, three aspects of “iot” data acquisition, “data fusion” and “field data” are studied and a “multi-source heterogeneous” collaborative manufacturing process system is proposed. The hardware method for robot arm classification is introduced. Then, an implementation scheme based on wireless communication is proposed. A software for processing the data of robot arm classification is developed. The fault condition of the robot arm is judged according to the test results. If there is a fault, the type of fault is displayed in an intuitive way to complete the fault diagnosis of the entire robot arm. The implementation of this project can improve the effectiveness of production site management and control. The two-second fault diagnosis. The error detection rate reached 98.7%. It was significantly better than the control system. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm is effective.

Abstract:AI and machine learning based approaches are becoming ubiquitous in almost all engineering fields. Control engineering cannot escape this trend. In this paper, we explore how AI tools can be useful in control applications. The core tool we focus on is automatic differentiation. Two immediate applications are linearization of system dynamics for local stability analysis or for state estimation using Kalman filters. We also explore other usages such as conversion of differential algebraic equations to ordinary differential equations for control design. In addition, we explore the use of machine learning models for global parameterizations of state vectors and control inputs in model predictive control applications. For each considered use case, we give examples and results.

Bridging Intelligence and Instinct: A New Control Paradigm for Autonomous Robots

Abstract:As the advent of artificial general intelligence (AGI) progresses at a breathtaking pace, the application of large language models (LLMs) as AI Agents in robotics remains in its nascent stage. A significant concern that hampers the seamless integration of these AI Agents into robotics is the unpredictability of the content they generate, a phenomena known as ``hallucination''. Drawing inspiration from biological neural systems, we propose a novel, layered architecture for autonomous robotics, bridging AI agent intelligence and robot instinct. In this context, we define Robot Instinct as the innate or learned set of responses and priorities in an autonomous robotic system that ensures survival-essential tasks, such as safety assurance and obstacle avoidance, are carried out in a timely and effective manner. This paradigm harmoniously combines the intelligence of LLMs with the instinct of robotic behaviors, contributing to a more safe and versatile autonomous robotic system. As a case study, we illustrate this paradigm within the context of a mobile robot, demonstrating its potential to significantly enhance autonomous robotics and enabling a future where robots can operate independently and safely across diverse environments.
