Abstract:There has an increasing demand on the fabrication of flexible, light-weight, robust, cost-effective, and eco-friendly freestanding paper-like materials in view of their promising applications in energy devices, sensors, actuators, and chemical filters. With the unique planar structure and outstanding properties, graphene has been recognized as the most promising building block for the development of freestanding paper-like materials for various specific applications. Here, we highlight recent progress of graphene-based freestanding paper-like materials for sensing applications. The fabrication methods for graphene-based freestanding paper-like materials are introduced completely. Three main characteristics of graphene-based freestanding paper-like materials, including mechanical performance, electrical conductivity, and biological property, are also present. The sensing applications of graphene-based freestanding paper-like materials such as electrochemical sensors, resistance sensors, and deformation sensors are discussed in details.

Abstract:Graphene and graphene-like two-dimensional nanomaterials have aroused tremendous research interest in recent years due to their unique electronic, optical, and mechanical properties associated with their planar structure. Aptamers have exhibited many advantages as molecular recognition elements for sensing devices compared to traditional antibodies. The marriage of two-dimensional nanomaterials and aptamers has emerged many ingenious aptasensing strategies for applications in the fields of clinical diagnosis and food safety. This review highlights current advances in the development and application of two-dimensional nanomaterials-based aptasensors with the focus on two main signal-transducing mechanisms, i.e. electrochemical and optical. A special attention is paid to graphene, a one-atom thick layer of graphite with exceptional properties, representing a fastgrowing field of research. In view of the unique properties of two-dimensional nanostructures and their inherent advantages of synthetic aptamers, we expect that high-performance two-dimensional nanomaterials-based aptasensing devices will find extensive applications in environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and food safety.

Abstract:Physical sensors form the fundamental building blocks of a multitude of advanced applications that detect and monitor the surroundings and communicate the acquired physical data. The everlasting need for more compliant, low-cost, and energy-efficient sensor solutions has led to considerable interest in enhancing their features and operation limits even further. While graphene has emerged as a promising candidate material, due to its outstanding electrical and mechanical properties, it is still not available in large volumes for practical applications. Meanwhile, Laser-Induced Graphene has opened new perspectives for a versatile, durable, printed physical sensing platform capable of detecting various physical parameters across a range of conditions and subjects. In this review, LIG physical sensors were categorized into four broad types based on their transduction mechanism: mechanical, thermal, magnetic, and electromagnetic. We summaries various design strategies established for preparing reliable physical sensors without the involvement of chemical treatments, synthesis, and multi-step fabrication processes. The review considers the effects of laser choice, lasing environment, and parameters on graphene properties. We also discuss a broad spectrum of applications of LIG physical sensors in fields ranging from healthcare, tactile sensing, environmental monitoring, energy harvesting, and soft robotics to desalination and THz modulation.

Abstract:Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is produced rapidly by directly irradiating carbonaceous precursors, and it naturally exhibits as a three-dimensional porous structure. Due to advantages such as simple preparation, time-saving, environmental friendliness, low cost, and expanding categories of raw materials, LIG and its derivatives have achieved broad applications in sensors. This has been witnessed in various fields such as wearable devices, disease diagnosis, intelligent robots, and pollution detection. However, despite LIG sensors having demonstrated an excellent capability to monitor physical and chemical parameters, the systematic review of synthesis, sensing mechanisms, and applications of them combined with comparison against other preparation approaches of graphene is still lacking. Here, graphene-based sensors for physical, biological, and chemical detection are reviewed first, followed by the introduction of general preparation methods for the laser-induced method to yield graphene. The preparation and advantages of LIG, sensing mechanisms, and the properties of different types of emerging LIG-based sensors are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, possible solutions to the problems and challenges of preparing LIG and LIG-based sensors are proposed. This review may serve as a detailed reference to guide the development of LIG-based sensors that possess properties for future smart sensors in health care, environmental protection, and industrial production.

Abstract:Graphene, due to its unique zero-bandgap, single-layer structure, and outstanding properties, has attracted more than a decade of research interests. In the upstream of graphene research, laser manufacturing with high-energy density, non-contact nature, and efficiency has been extensively investigated by numerous scholars for the purpose of fabricating or manipulating graphene. Downstream in the application domain, graphene demonstrates substantial practical applications across sectors such as energy, heat dissipation, medicine, and sensors. While there exist reviews on both the upstream synthesis and downstream applications of graphene, a comprehensive overview specifically focusing on the interaction between lasers and graphene and their implications in the sensing field is currently lacking. This paper addresses this gap by summarizing various methods of preparing graphene such as laser direct writing, laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition, and laser reduction of graphene oxide and reviews the applications of these methods in the field of sensors. This review presents an outlook on the promising future of graphene-based sensing technology.

Abstract:The paper presents the design and fabrication of a low-cost and easy-to-fabricate laser-induced graphene sensor together with its implementation for multi-sensing applications. Laser-irradiation of commercial polymer film was applied for photo-thermal generation of graphene. The graphene patterned in an interdigitated shape was transferred onto Kapton sticky tape to form the electrodes of a capacitive sensor. The functionality of the sensor was validated by employing them in electrochemical and strain-sensing scenarios. Impedance spectroscopy was applied to investigate the response of the sensor. For the electrochemical sensing, different concentrations of sodium sulfate were prepared, and the fabricated sensor was used to detect the concentration differences. For the strain sensing, the sensor was deployed for monitoring of human joint movements and tactile sensing. The promising sensing results validating the applicability of the fabricated sensor for multiple sensing purposes are presented.

Abstract:The rising global population and improved living standards have led to an alarming increase in non-communicable diseases, notably cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, posing a severe threat to human health. Wearable sensing devices, utilizing micro-sensing technology for real-time monitoring, have emerged as promising tools for disease prevention. Among various sensing platforms, graphene-based sensors have shown exceptional performance in the field of micro-sensing. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) technology, a cost-effective and facile method for graphene preparation, has gained particular attention. By converting polymer films directly into patterned graphene materials at ambient temperature and pressure, LIG offers a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods, opening up innovative possibilities for electronic device fabrication. Integrating LIG-based sensors into health monitoring systems holds the potential to revolutionize health management. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the discovery of LIG, this work provides a comprehensive overview of LIG's evolution and the progress of LIG-based sensors. Delving into the diverse sensing mechanisms of LIG-based sensors, recent research advances in the domain of health monitoring are explored. Abstract:Laser-induced graphene (LIG) and Laser-scribed graphene (LSG) are both advanced materials with significant potential in various applications, particularly in the field of sustainable sensors. The practical uses of LIG (LSG), which include gas detection, biological process monitoring, strain assessment, and environmental variable tracking, are thoroughly examined in this review paper. Its tunable characteristics distinguish LIG (LSG), which is developed from accurate laser beam modulation on polymeric substrates, and they are essential in advancing sensing technologies in many applications. The recent advances in LIG (LSG) applications include energy storage, biosensing, and electronics by steadily advancing efficiency and versatility. The remarkable flexibility of LIG (LSG) and its transformative potential in regard to sensor manufacturing and utilization are highlighted in this manuscript. Moreover, it thoroughly examines the various fabrication methods used in LIG (LSG) production, highlighting precision and adaptability. Abstract:Graphene, as an emerging 2D material, has been playing an important role in flexible electronics since its discovery in 2004. The representative fabrication methods of graphene include mechanical exfoliation, liquid-phase exfoliation, chemical vapor deposition, redox reaction, etc. Based on its excellent mechanical, electrical, thermo-acoustical, optical, and other properties, graphene has made a great progress in the development of mechanical sensors, microphone, sound source, electrophysiological detection, solar cells, synaptic transistors, light-emitting devices, and so on. In different application fields, large-scale, low-cost, high-quality, and excellent performance are important factors that limit the industrialization development of graphene. Therefore, laser scribing technology, roll-to-roll technology is used to reduce the cost. High-quality graphene can be obtained through chemical vapor deposition processes. The performance can be improved through the design of structure of the devices, and the homogeneity and stability of devices can be achieved by mechanized machining means. In total, graphene devices show promising prospect for the practical fields of sports monitoring, health detection, voice recognition, energy, etc. There is a hot issue for industry to create and maintain the market competitiveness of graphene products through increasing its versatility and killer application fields.
Laser-patterned multifunctional sensor array with graphene nanosheets as a smart biomonitoring fashion accessory

Abstract:Biomonitoring wearable sensors based on two-dimensional nanomaterials have lately elicited keen research interest and potential for a new range of flexible nanoelectronic devices. Practical nanomaterial-based devices suited for real-world service, which have first-rate performance while being an attractive accessory, are still distant. We report a multifunctional flexible wearable sensor fabricated using an ultra-thin percolative layer of microwave exfoliated graphene nanosheets on laser-patterned gold circular inter-digitated electrodes for monitoring vital human physiological parameters. This Graphene on Laser-patterned Electrodes (GLE) sensor displays an ultra-high strain resolution of 0.024% and a record gauge factor of 6.3e7 and exceptional stability and repeatability in its operating range. The sensor was subjected to biomonitoring experiments like measurement of heart rate, breathing rate, body temperature, and hydration level, which are vital health parameters, especially considering the current pandemic scenario. The sensor also served in applications such as a pedometer, limb movement tracking, and control switch for human interaction. The innovative laser-etch process used to pattern gold thin-film electrodes and shapes, with the multifunctional incognizable graphene layer, provides a technique for integrating multiple sensors in a wearable fashion accessory. The reported work marks a giant leap from the conventional banal devices to a highly marketable multifunctional sensor array as a biomonitoring fashion accessory.

Abstract:Flexible wearable sensors are expected to be the future generation of personal health monitoring devices with large‐area, multimodal, multipoint sensing, and complicated data analysis. However, multimaterial interfacial coalescence and mechanical matching critically challenge the advancement of flexible devices and multifunction integration. Graphene, with characteristic carbon sheet 2D material, is endowed with good transparency, stability, superior electron mobility, heat conductivity, excellent flexibility, and mechanical performance. A summary of the progresses of flexible graphene‐based sensors in terms of material processing, sensor configuration, and property is presented. Various assembly structures could perform different electrical behaviors with unitary graphene material. The diversity of graphene‐based temperature, humidity, pressure, strain, and integrated multifunctional sensors developed in recent years is detailed. Benefitting from the commendable flexible mechanical performance and high durability, flexible graphene‐based sensors promote practical applications in body temperature monitoring, voice recognition, pulse‐beating, motion, and respiration detection. Finally, future research following the development trends and challenges of integrated graphene‐based sensors to develop their potential in human health monitoring and human–machine interfaces are discussed. The progresses of flexible graphene‐based temperature, humidity, pressure, strain, and integrated multifunctional sensors in terms of material processing, sensor configuration and properties are summarized. Abstract:Graphene is a highly promising material for biosensors due to its excellent physical and chemical properties which facilitate electron transfer between the active locales of enzymes or other biomaterials and a transducer surface. Printing technology has recently emerged as a low-cost and practical method for fabrication of flexible and disposable electronics devices. The combination of these technologies is promising for the production and commercialization of low cost sensors. In this review, recent developments in organo-functionalized graphene and printed biosensor technologies are comprehensively covered. Firstly, various methods for printing graphene-based fluids on different substrates are discussed. Secondly, different graphene-based ink materials and preparation methods are described. Lastly, biosensing performances of printed or printable graphene-based electrochemical and field effect transistor sensors for some important analytes are elaborated. The reported printed graphene based sensors exhibit promising properties with good reliability suitable for commercial applications. Among most reports, only a few printed graphene-based biosensors including screen-printed oxidase-functionalized graphene biosensor have been demonstrated. The technology is still at early stage but rapidly growing and will earn great attention in the near future due to increasing demand of low-cost and disposable biosensors.

Abstract:<p>Graphene has great potential in wearable sensors. However, the sensing selectivity of graphene‐based sensors is still a big challenge, limiting their application in the multifunctional sensors. Herein, different types and distributions of defects are introduced into graphene by femtosecond laser patterning to realize sensing selectivity for wearable multifunctional sensors. The imperfect graphene with four pattern arrays, circle, square, triangle, and hexagon with none, right, acute, and obtuse angle, is fabricated by laser to control the types and distributions of defects. The graphene with different patterns shows remarkable sensing selectivity, owing to the dangling bonds and vacancies on the edge of patterns. The graphene‐based sensor with the circle pattern array is used to detect the strain variation; the triangle one is for temperature detection; and the hexagon one can collect the information of gas. The gauge factor is demonstrated to be as high as ≈10<sup>4</sup>. The as‐produced sensor with the above‐mentioned four patterns can simultaneously detect body pulse, temperature, and harmful gas by attaching to human body or clothes, offering real‐time health monitoring and protection. The patterned graphene‐based sensors with high sensing selectivity are expected to develop multifunctional sensor platform and versatile artificial electronic skin.</p>

Abstract:Abstract The rise of human–machine interaction and the internet of things technology requires the development of functionalized sensors that are mechanically flexible and fabulously wearable. Therefore, the emergence of new materials and devices is particularly important for technology design and development. Graphene has the atomically level thickness, mechanical flexibility, lightweights, and high conductivity and transparency. Especially, the large specific area of graphene enables the perception of external stimuli with high sensitivity, which is expected to be used in flexible sensor technology. In this review, we will introduce the research progress of graphene in flexible physical signal sensors, including the device structure design and the applications of these devices in wearable technology. We will overview the development of new directions of sensors, such as miniaturization, intelligence, and multi-modal. We will also focus on the latest technical progress of related sensing devices and point out the challenges and directions of future development of wearable sensors.

Abstract:Nowadays, more and more person pays the attention to their own healthcare status, and the physiological parameters are further benefit to the medical diagnosis and drug treatment. Thus, the wearable sensors with high performance and comfortability would be desirable candidate for the unique application. Various sensors including pressure sensor, strain sensor, and chemical sensor have been widely developed. With emerge of two-dimensional materials, the graphene material with superior electric and mechanical properties could be active element for the wearable sensors. Therefore, the chemical sensor of alcohol sensor and mechanical sensor of pressure sensor were investigated in this work, which shows promising potential in the healthcare.

Abstract:Recent experimental and industrial advances in the field of nanotechnologies have boosted the development of interdisciplinary research, one of the most constructive and inspiring of human pursuits. Many scientists specialize in manufacturing new forms of nanomaterials that hold promise for various applications such as medical diagnosis and therapy, environmental monitoring, energy production and storage, molecular computing and much more. Graphene, an increasingly important nanosized material reported in 2004, has emerged to become an exciting two-dimensional material with distinct attributes that has attracted great interest in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine, as well as their related interdisciplinarities. The unique nature of graphene makes it stand out and applicable to various technologies. Its photoelectric properties and inherent Raman spectroscopy make it an ideal candidate for the development of new devices and methods in many branches of life sciences and technology. The electronic properties of graphene make it a highly useful nanomaterial. It carries a high charge mobility which allows it to be extensively applied to field effect transistors. Graphene also has unparalleled transparency and conductivity, making it a viable electrode in solar cells. In addition, the specific area of graphene makes energy storage possible. Although these properties are inherent to the compound, graphene can also be modified into a better nanomaterial. Due to its outstanding performance, graphene development shows great promise in several scientific fields. Abstract:The increasing interest in wearable smart healthcare systems has sparked considerable attention toward flexible sensors owing to their high sensitivity and flexibility. However, these sensors still face challenges in terms of performance imbalances and instability. To address these issues, graphene-based conductive materials with exceptional mechanical and electrical properties have been incorporated into flexible sensors. Despite the potential of graphene, a comprehensive understanding of the sensing mechanisms and influence of fabrication methods on the performance of graphene-based flexible sensors is lacking. This article aims to bridge this gap by providing an overview of the latest research progress in flexible graphene sensors. We begin by analyzing the main properties of graphene materials, including tensile strength, specific surface area, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. These properties highlight the superior characteristics of graphene for flexible sensor applications. The sensing mechanisms of strain/pressure, gas, and temperature flexible sensors are reviewed, with a focus on innovations in graphene composites, regular microstructures, and emerging preparation methods that enable an effective balance of the individual properties of a single flexible sensor. Furthermore, the article discusses graphene-based multifunctional flexible sensors that allow for the simultaneous monitoring of multiple stimuli, self-powered performance studies, and wireless communication performance studies. Performance analysis of these sensors in the context of flexible systems is provided. Finally, this article presents a comprehensive summary of flexible graphene sensors and offers an outlook for the future. We aim to provide theoretical guidance and technical support for the realization of individual whole-life physical sign detection using flexible graphene-based sensors.

Abstract:From zero-dimensional fullerene to one-dimensional carbon nanotube and to two-dimensional graphene, nanostructures based on carbon element are always one of the most exciting topics in modern science and technology. The work published in the open literature dealing with the properties, synthesis and sensor applications of graphene is overviewed. The potential techniques to realise optical fibre graphene sensors are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Wearable sensors in healthcare monitoring have recently found widespread applications in biomedical fields for their non- or minimal-invasive, user-friendly and easy-accessible features. Sensing materials is one of the major challenges to achieve these superiorities of wearable sensors for healthcare monitoring, while graphene-based materials with many favorable properties have shown great efficiency in sensing various biochemical and biophysical signals. In this paper, we review state-of-the-art advances in the development and modification of graphene-based materials (i.e., graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide) for fabricating advanced wearable sensors with 1D (fibers), 2D (films) and 3D (foams/aerogels/hydrogels) macroscopic structures. We summarize the structural design guidelines, sensing mechanisms, applications and evolution of the graphene-based materials as wearable sensors for healthcare monitoring of biophysical signals (e.g., mechanical, thermal and electrophysiological signals) and biochemical signals from various body fluids and exhaled gases. Finally, existing challenges and future prospects are presented in this area.
