Abstract:When considering a bacterial population as a multicellular community,it is imperative to elucidate how the population main-tains homeostasis and viability in response to environmental fac-tors.Coordinated cell death plays a critical role in the development and maintenance of multicellular populations, which depends on population differentiation[1,2].Cannibalism,fratri-cide,and programmed cell death(PCD)are three major mecha-nisms of bacterial coordinated cell death[3-6].Gonzales-Pastor et al.[7]reported that Bacillus subtilis performs cannibalism to con-tend with nutrient deficiency in the environment.A subfraction of cells differentiate into cannibal cells to secrete extracellular killing factors, including sporulation delaying protein(SdpC)and an antimicrobial peptide called sporulation killing factor(SkfA),to kill their siblings.Lysed cells serve as nutrients to feed the cannibal cells and help the B.subtilis population survive.Although cannibal-ism has been well investigated in B.subtilis, the model Bacillus spe-cies,its mechanism remains unknown in other Bacillus species.
