Abstract:Mental health is an important public health issue in China, compounded by a shortage in psychiatric services. Against this backdrop, digital technologies could offer solutions. Digital mental health interventions use technologies, such as smartphone applications, to improve mental health outcomes. Although there has been a drastic increase in mental health mobile apps available in recent years, current evidence-based digital interventions for mental health are scarce and seldom evaluated for effectiveness and implementation in China. In this Viewpoint, we review digital mental health interventions in China and propose a framework that could guide the development of culturally sensitive digital mental health innovations, with the adoption of co-creation and community engagement strategies. We also provide recommendations to address issues related to usage, interventions, and implementation to improve health equity and implementation of digital mental health interventions in the Chinese context.

Abstract:The communication of mental health is an important branch of health communication, and it is also an important factor affecting people's physical and mental health. With the increasing pressure of life, people's mental health problems have huge challenges. Under the enormous pressure of economy and life, people's mental health problems are becoming increasingly prominent. This calls for attention to mental health issues. In the context of new media, knowledge about mental health can be disseminated through the Internet and mobile platforms. This approach will spread awareness of mental health prevention and basic issues. Mental health problems are also a manifestation of the lack of humanistic spirit. Excellent works related to humanistic spirit can promote the relief of mental health problems. Literature can contribute to the development of mental health problems. This research studies the communication of mental health issues in the context of new media using literary works as a carrier. At the same time, it also considers big data-related algorithms to mine the traditional characteristics of mental health problems. The research results show that new media technology can well assist the dissemination of mental health education, and literary works also contribute to the dissemination of mental health education knowledge. Collaborative filtering algorithm and atrous convolution algorithm can better predict the relevant characteristics in the process of mental health communication. For the CF algorithm, its maximum similarity index reached 0.987 when recommending mental health propagation paths using new media technology. For ACNN, the smallest prediction error is only 1.78%.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese people with mental health difficulties faced a major issueof mental health stigma. The pandemic’s constant stress and social isolation intensified the stigma attachedto people suffering from mental illnesses. To address this issue, a study was done in China to investigatemental health stigma in the context of digital media arts. Methods: The study involves randomly distributing1300 questionnaires on a 5-point Likert scale. Only 500 questionnaires, however, were found adequate fordata analysis using partial least squares (PLS). Results: Digital health innovation and adoption are crucial forenhancing mental health. The study’s focus was confined to the adoption of innovation in mental healthcare inChina because this sector received less attention in previous research that sought to establish a link betweendigital health innovation and digital mental healthcare. Conclusion: The study has important theoretical andpractical implications for improving people’s lives by strengthening their mental health systems with digitaltechnologies and raising awareness of digital healthcare tools. The findings are important for policymakersto make people aware of the importance of caring for their mental health by digital healthcare tools.

Empowering or backfiring? The paradoxical effects of digital media skills on depression through (mis)information sharing on social media

Abstract:This study proposed and tested a novel theoretical framework of media empowerment regarding the relationship between digital media skills and mental health as well as the complex mechanism linking the two. This study utilized an online survey of a representative sample of Shanghai residents ( N = 916) to examine the interconnections among digital media skills, (mis)information sharing, and mental health. The findings revealed that the empowerment mechanisms of digital media skills on depression were contradictory at the individual and community levels. For the two dimensions of digital media skills, information skills directly reduced levels of depression but indirectly aggravated depression by promoting misinformation sharing; in contrast, social skills alleviated depression by mitigating misinformation sharing. Furthermore, risk perception positively moderated the relationship between misinformation sharing and depression. This study contributes to the media empowerment literature by empirically demonstrating a linkage between developed digital media skills and media empowerment in the aspect of mental health in the digital age. This study also innovatively highlights specific psychosocial elements of the empowerment processes from a communication perspective.

Abstract:The internet is frequently the first point of contact for people seeking support for their mental health symptoms. Digital interventions designed to be deployed through the internet have significant promise to reach diverse populations who may not have access to, or are not yet engaged in, treatment and deliver evidence-based resources to address symptoms. The liminal nature of online interactions requires designing to prioritize needs detection, intervention potency, and efficiency. Real-world implementation, data privacy and safety are equally important and can involve transparent partnerships with stakeholders in industry and non-profit organizations. This commentary highlights challenges and opportunities for research in this space, grounded in learnings from multiple research projects and teams aligned with this effort.

Digital empowerment in mental health: A meta-analysis of internet-based interventions for enhancing mental health literacy

Abstract:Background: Poor mental health literacy (MHL) in the global population significantly contributes to the treatment gap associated with mental disorders. In the digital age, leveraging Internet-based MHL interventions offers scalability and broader accessibility. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of Internet-based interventions in improving MHL and mental health. Method: Up to Feb 2024, seven databases were searched for Internet-based interventions on MHL (knowledge, stigma, help-seeking attitudes and intentions) and mental disorders (general distress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms). The random-effects meta-analyses at post-intervention and long-term follow-up assessments were performed. Results: Twenty-nine eligible studies involving 11,582 participants were included. Significant positive effects were observed across various domains: knowledge increase (immediate: g = 0.459, 95 %CI: 0.285 to 0.634; follow-up: g = 0.487, 95 %CI: 0.348 to 0.626), immediate stigma reduction (g = -0.332, 95 %CI: -0.479 to -0.186), immediate enhancement of help-seeking attitudes (g = 0.168, 95 %CI: 0.046 to 0.3291) and help-seeking intentions (g = 0.135, 95 %CI: 0.072 to 0.198), as well as immediate mental health improvements (g = -0.074, 95 %CI: -0.115 to -0.033). Conclusion: Overall, these findings underscore the promising effects of internet-based interventions in improving MHL and mental health, while maintaining these effects over time remains challenging, particularly in reducing stigma and promoting long-term help-seeking behaviors. Addressing methodological limitations, adopting a more interactive approach, and implementing targeted interventions are crucial to maximizing the effectiveness and advancing mental health care worldwide.

Abstract:Digital innovations in mental health offer great potential, but present unique challenges. Using a consensus development panel approach, an expert, international, cross-disciplinary panel met to provide a framework to conceptualise digital mental health innovations, research into mechanisms and effectiveness and approaches for clinical implementation. Key questions and outputs from the group were agreed by consensus, and are presented and discussed in the text and supported by case examples in an accompanying appendix. A number of key themes emerged. (1) Digital approaches may work best across traditional diagnostic systems: we do not have effective ontologies of mental illness and transdiagnostic/symptom-based approaches may be more fruitful. (2) Approaches in clinical implementation of digital tools/interventions need to be creative and require organisational change: not only do clinicians and patients need training and education to be more confident and skilled in using digital technologies to support shared care decision-making, but traditional roles need to be extended, with clinicians working alongside digital navigators and non-clinicians who are delivering protocolised treatments. (3) Designing appropriate studies to measure the effectiveness of implementation is also key: including digital data raises unique ethical issues, and measurement of potential harms is only just beginning. (4) Accessibility and codesign are needed to ensure innovations are long lasting. (5) Standardised guidelines for reporting would ensure effective synthesis of the evidence to inform clinical implementation. COVID-19 and the transition to virtual consultations have shown us the potential for digital innovations to improve access and quality of care in mental health: now is the ideal time to act.

Public health messages during a global emergency through an online community: a discourse and sentiment analysis

Abstract:The growing popularity of social media and its ubiquitous presence in our lives brings associated risks such as the spread of mis- and disinformation, particularly when these may be unregulated in times of global crises. Online communities are able to provide support by enabling connection with others and also provide great potential for dynamic interaction and timely dissemination of information compared with more traditional methods. This study evaluates interactions within the Essex Coronavirus Action/Support Facebook private group, which set out to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection by informing Essex residents of guidance and helping vulnerable individuals. At the outset, 18 community administrators oversaw the group, which attracted approximately 37,900 members. Longitudinal Facebook group interactions across five periods spanning the UK lockdowns 2020–2021 were analysed using psychological discourse analysis and supplementary computed-mediated analysis to further explore sentiment and linguistic features. The findings endorsed that the group provided a protected space for residents to express their feelings in times of crises and an opportunity to address confusion and concern. The effective communication of public health messages was facilitated by promoting desired interaction and the construction of group identities. Administrators worked with group members to achieve a shared understanding of others' perspectives and the COVID-19 evidence base, which led to a mobilisation of the provision of support in the community. This was accomplished through the application of rhetorical and interactional devices. This study demonstrates how online groups can employ discursive strategies to engage audiences, build cohesion, provide support, and encourage health protective behaviours. This has implications for public health teams in terms of designing, implementing, or evaluating such interventions.
Digital technology and mental health: Chinese university students' perspectives on the impact of social media

Abstract:Background: To address the growing concerns about mental health issues among Chinese university students, our study investigates the impact of social media on their mental health. This study intends to shed light on how these students' use of social media platforms contributes to these mental health issues, given that it has been estimated that up to 30% of university students in China suffer from mental health issues. Methods: We investigate the extent of this issue by looking at how Chinese social media platforms like WeChat, Weibo, and QQ impact students' mental health. To gain a comprehensive insight into students' perspectives, this study's sole methodology is qualitative semi-structured interviews. Our core claim asserts that social media considerably affects Chinese university students' mental health, with both positive and negative consequences. Results: The findings show how closely social media use and Chinese university students' mental health are related. These networks let people connect and get support but also encourage social comparison and stigma towards mental illness. Students use a variety of coping skills, such as self-regulation techniques, digital detoxification techniques, and looking for emotional support in online networks. These results highlight the need for a complex understanding of social media's effects on mental health. Our study also recognizes students' capacity for adaptation and resilience as they traverse the digital world, offering theoretical and practical applications for successfully juggling online and offline lives. Conclusion: In the end, our study contributes to a thorough and culturally sensitive understanding of how social media affects the mental health of Chinese university students.
Health Communication through Positive and Solidarity Messages Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: Automated Content Analysis of Facebook Uses

Abstract:The COVID-19 outbreak has caused significant stress in our lives, which potentially increases frustration, fear, and resentful emotions. Managing stress is complex, but helps to alleviate negative psychological effects. In order to understand how the public coped with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic, we used Macao as a case study and collected 104,827 COVID-19 related posts from Facebook through data mining, from 1 January to 31 December 2020. Divominer, a big-data analysis tool supported by computational algorithm, was employed to identify themes and facilitate machine coding and analysis. A total of 60,875 positive messages were identified, with 24,790 covering positive psychological themes, such as "anti-epidemic", "solidarity", "hope", "gratitude", "optimism", and "grit". Messages that mentioned "anti-epidemic", "solidarity", and "hope" were the most prevalent, while different crisis stages, key themes and media elements had various impacts on public involvement. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first-ever study in the Chinese context that uses social media to clarify the awareness of solidarity. Positive messages are needed to empower social media users to shoulder their shared responsibility to tackle the crisis. The findings provide insights into users' needs for improving their subjective well-being to mitigate the negative psychological impact of the pandemic.
Mental Health Problems among COVID‐19 Survivors in Wuhan, China

Abstract:139 medium-wide commitment shortage present across online platforms and pursuits. In that sense, online information-seeking may not be fundamentally different from online befriending. From “blocking” to “unfollowing”, “unfriending” and “ghosting”, the abundance and popularity of online relationship-terminating functions and behaviors speak to this phenomenon. Relatedly, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is very commonly diagnosed in individuals with pathological Internet use, variably defined. However, with the pace of online life, competition from countless sites, visual and auditory stimuli meant to drive traffic, and difficult-to-ignore “alerts” and “notifications”, one need not suffer from pathological Internet use to appreciate an Internet-inattention link that seems like an intrinsic characteristic of online psychology. The difficulty sustaining attention online, the weakness of online bonds and the weak commitment to online content suggest an environment-wide retention challenge that would be crucial to address in two activities where focus and commitment are indispensable: psychotherapy and education. To that end, various mitigating factors that have been proposed in the mental health and education literature to enhance retention would seem very relevant in the COVID-19 era. These include nurturing a medium-defying bond between patient/student and therapist/teacher; participative goal-setting that views users as collaborative partners; a hybrid or blended approach that integrates some in-person contact into remote delivery; underscoring the credentials of remote therapists/ teachers so they may be taken more seriously by users; inclusive design elements that reflect the diversity of platform users; and “gamification”, which borrows from video game development to increase platform engagement. Moving therapy and education out of their traditional, timehonored settings in response to the pandemic has allowed the continued provision of mental health care and saved the academic year. But our knowledge of Internet psychology, as well as data from studies into digital self-help platforms and MOOCs, suggest that online mental health treatment and teaching cannot yet be considered an interchangeable, quality-assured alternative to conventional practice. Well-documented challenges with retention highlight this as a real obstacle to be fully investigated and addressed before online therapy and education can be embraced as reliable long-term solutions.
How do digital lives affect resident mental health in the digital era? Empirical evidence based on Chinese general social survey

Abstract:Having good mental health means we are better able to connect, function, cope and thrive. The widespread application of digital technology in daily life provides new ways and promising tools for residents to maintain their mental health. Given the importance of mental health for everyone, and the fact that mental health problems are prevalent worldwide, this study discusses how digital lives affects the mental health of residents. The results suggest that digital lives are significantly and positively associated with mental health. Mechanisms analysis identifies personal perceptions (self-rated physical exercise and subjective wellbeing) as the important paths for digital lives to promote mental health, while social perceptions (social trust and social fairness) play a suppressing effect on the relationship between them. The results of further discussion show that the degree of the influence of digital lives on mental health of individuals is heterogeneous among different regions. Due to the difference in development level, the positive impact of digital lives is greater in urban areas than in rural areas, and it is stronger in western regions than in eastern and central regions. This study enriches the nascent research stream of digitalization, explores new paths of harnessing digital technologies for mental health, and offers useful insights for the government to guide them in formulating digital development strategies and achieving the Healthy China Strategy.
Initial Communication Media and Patient Revisit: Evidence from an Online Mental Healthcare Platform

Abstract:Online mental healthcare platforms have flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the media choice in online physician-patient interactions has still been a conundrum for all stakeholders. As an essential service design element, communication media could affect patient revisit, which in turn helps manage chronic diseases. Yet this media effect is little understood in research and practice. Using data from a leading online mental healthcare platform in China, we classify service media into synchronous (audio, video) and asynchronous (text) types and study their relative effects. First, we observe disproportionately more patient revisits after initial healthcare services via synchronous media. The effect is consistent across different empirical methods, such as matching and regression discontinuity design. Second, synchronous media improve both the health conditions of patients and the revenue of physicians and the platform. Third, we explore the underlying mechanisms and present evidence suggesting that the cue multiplicity (more likely than feedback immediacy) of synchronous media communication explains its positive effect. Finally, we examine the effect heterogeneity across overt and covert patient attributes and find that: (i) The media effect is significant for most mental conditions but not schizophrenia, suggesting that synchronous media are effective when online consultation matters in therapy; and (ii) the effect is more pronounced for patients at a higher risk of health deterioration, as predicted and ranked using machine learning techniques. We discuss the implications of these findings for understanding the interplay between communication media and telehealth service engagement and designing sustainable online platforms for all healthcare stakeholders.

Abstract:Digital media has affected various aspects of life, including in the field of mental health. Mental health services are an important part of efforts to improve the quality of life of individuals and society as a whole. By analyzing the use of digital media as a means of public communication in mental health services, it is hoped that useful insights and recommendations can be found to improve access, quality, and the positive impact of mental health services in this digital era. This research is qualitative research that explores and describes in detail a situation or phenomenon of the research object studied by developing concepts and gathering existing facts. Raw data is analyzed and organized by data collection date, data source, data type, data description, and data nature. All data must be read in order to find out what data has been obtained, the source of the data, and its meaning. Through this platform, individuals can access information about various mental disorders, stress management, relaxation techniques, and other resources that can help them deal with mental health problems. In addition, digital media can also provide discussion forums and community support for individuals experiencing mental health problems. Through online discussion groups, community forums, or social media channels, individuals can share experiences, get emotional support, and feel that they are not alone in their struggles. Interaction with others who are experiencing similar problems can increase self-understanding, strengthen a sense of hope, and provide inspiration for recovery.

Social Media Use, Health Literacy, and Preventive Behaviors in COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study on Chinese Netizens (Preprint)

Abstract:<sec> <title>BACKGROUND</title> Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has quickly spread around the world and led to a novel pandemic since its outbreak from December 2019. Social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram etc.) had been recognized as the important strategies for health-promoting practice in public health. While social media use is widespread in the general population, but little is known about the effect of social media use on health promotion during pandemic outbreak. </sec> <sec> <title>OBJECTIVE</title> This study aimed to explore whether and how social media use and health literacy predicted public preventive behaviors during COVID-19 outbreak in Chinese contexts. </sec> <sec> <title>METHODS</title> A national online cross-sectional survey was conducted by proportionate probability sampling method among Chinese netizens in February 2020. Two hierarchical multiple regression models were executed to explore the underlying mechanism of the relationship among all variables. </sec> <sec> <title>RESULTS</title> Among the 802 participants, 51.9% (N = 416) were male, average age was 32.65 years old. High education (above bachelor, N = 624, 77.7%), high-income (above ¥5,000, N = 525, 65.3%), “Married “(N = 496, 61.8%) and “Good health” (N = 486, 60.6%) were the significant characteristics of the participants. The average time of social use (M = 2.34, SD = 1.12) was about 2-3 hours per day, public social media and aggravated social media were the most used media type. Respondents had high level of disease knowledge (M = 8.15, SD = 1.43), and eHealth literacy (M = 3.79, SD = .59). Frequency of social media use (β = .04, t = 5.97, p<.001), disease knowledge (β = 5.97, t = 3.42, p<.001), and eHealth literacy (β = .19, t = 7.69, p<.001) significantly and positively predicted preventive behaviors, respectively. eHealth literacy (β = .018, t = 2.051, p < .05) did positively and significantly moderate the relationship between frequency of SM use and preventive behaviors, disease knowledge (β = -.01, t = -1.07, p> .05) negatively moderated above relationship, but not significantly. Professional SM (β = .041, t = 3.005, p < .01), public SM (β = .077, t = 4.103, p < .001) and aggregated SM (β =.092, t =6.433, p <.001) positively predicted preventive behaviors, while “official SM” (β = .013, t = 1.012, p > .05) was excluded. </sec> <sec> <title>CONCLUSIONS</title> This article was an original research to explore the relationship among one’s SM use, health literacy and preventive behaviors during COVID-19 outbreak in China. We found that social media use really influenced individual’s preventive behaviors and aggregated SM deserved attention in future. Health literacy was essential to health promotion in pandemic outbreak. These results not only enriched the theoretical paradigm of public health management and health communication, but also had practical implications in pandemic control both for China and other countries. </sec>
