Abstract:In the recent past, there has been an increase in the use of semiconductor nanostructures that convert solar energy to electrical energy. This has encouraged the development of better and more efficient solar cells (SCs). Numerous investigations have been conducted into synthesizing novel semiconductor materials and tuning the electronic properties based on the shape, size, composition, and assembly of the quantum dots to improve hybrid assemblies. Recent studies that are determining the prospects of quantum dot SCs can form the basis for improving photovoltaic efficiency. Here, we have reviewed studies that investigated the sensitization methods for fabricating highly efficient SCs. We also discussed some examples that would help other researchers who want to sensitize quantum dot (QD) SCs. Thereafter, we analyzed the main and popular strategies that can be used for sensitizing the QD SCs within the limitations, advantages, and prospects of fabricating high-efficiency and stable QDs. During this work, we offered strong technical support and a theoretical basis for improving the industrial applications of QD. In addition, we provide a reference that can inspire other researchers who aim to improve the performance of SCs.

Abstract:Silicon quantum dot (Si QD) solar cells offer the potential to tune the effective band gap through quantum confinement and hence allow fabrication of optimised tandem devices in one growth run in a thin film process. Previous work in our group has shown how such cells can be fabricated by sputtering of thin layers of silicon rich oxide sandwiched between a stoichiometric oxide that on annealing crystallise to form Si QDs of uniform and controllable size. Doping multilayers with P and B allows formation of a rectifying junction with an effective band gap of 1.8 eV, which can give an open circuit voltage (V(OC)) of almost 500 mV. However, the doping behaviour of P and B in these QD materials is not well understood. In addition P and B have big but opposite effects on QD crystallisation, with P(B) forming larger (smaller) QDs than for undoped material. Two possible models for the doping mechanisms in these materials are explored: one relying on doping of a sub-oxide region around the Si QDs and the other based on the differing nucleation effects of P and B. In addition initial results on hetero-interfaces in the QD superstructure are assessed as a means to improve vertical current transport, and the effects of hydrogenation on improving V(OC) by passivating defects. Routes to incorporating these explanations for doping and other structural improvements are discussed as means of optimising the performance of these Si QD cells. Abstract:In quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), optimized quantum dot (QD) loading mode and high QD loading amount are prerequisites for great device performance. Capping ligand-induced self-assembly (CLIS) mode represents the mainstream QD loading strategy in the fabrication of high-efficiency QDSCs. However, there remain limitations in CLIS that constrain further enhancement of QD loading levels. This review illustrates the development of various QD loading methods in QDSCs, with an emphasis on the outstanding merits and bottlenecks of CLIS. Subsequently, thermodynamic and kinetic factors dominating QD loading behaviors in CLIS are analyzed theoretically. Upon understanding driving forces, resistances and energy effects in a QD assembly process, various novel strategies for improving QD loading amount in CLIS are summarized, and the related functional mechanism is established. Finally, the article concludes and outlooks some remaining academic issues to be solved, so that higher QD loading amount and efficiencies of QDSCs can be anticipated in the future.

Boosting the Performance of Environmentally Friendly Quantum Dot‐Sensitized Solar Cells over 13% Efficiency by Dual Sensitizers with Cascade Energy Structure

Abstract:<p>Generally, high light‐harvesting efficiency, electron‐injection efficiency, and charge‐collection efficiency are the prerequisites for high‐efficiency quantum‐dot‐sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). However, it is fairly difficult for a single QD sensitizer to meet these three requirements simultaneously. It is demonstrated that these parameters can be felicitously balanced by a cosensitization strategy through the adoption of environmental‐friendly Zn–Cu–In–Se and Zn–Cu–In–S dual QD sensitizers with cascade energy structure. Experimental results indicate that: i) the combination of the dual QDs can improve the light‐harvesting capability of the cells, especially in the visible light window; ii) the cosensitization approach can facilitate electron injection, benefitting from the cascade energy structure of the two QD sensitizers employed; iii) the charge‐collection efficiency can be remarkably enhanced by the suppressed charge‐recombination process due to the improved QD coverage on TiO<sub>2</sub>. Consequently, this cosensitization strategy delivers a new certified efficiency record of 12.98% for liquid‐junction QDSCs under AM 1.5G 1 sun irradiation. Moreover, the constructed cells exhibit good stability in a high‐humidity environment.</p>

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials for polymer-nanocrystal hybrid solar cells (HSCs). The aim of this review article is to present a comprehensive and current overview of inorganic QDs and their applications in HSCs. Fundamental properties of QDs are first illustrated. And then recent studies that have been done to elucidate charge dynamics of QDs and improve hybrid device performance are summarised and discussed in detail. Finally, an outlook is presented considering current existing challenges in HSCs.

Abstract:Novel type-II core/shell structure quantum dos have been synthesized for solar cell photoelectrode material. Cd0.64Zn0.36Te and CdS were chosen as a core and shell, respectively, to generate type-II core/shell structure quantum dos (QDs). Density functional theory was employed to explore the energy structure of Cd1-xZnxTe/CdS core/shell QDs, revealing that introduction of Zn element is a feasible strategy to prepare CdTe/CdS based QDs with type-II core/shell structure. Then, Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs were synthesized by aqueous phase method. Microscopic measurements showed that Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs have high crystalline quality. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy together with optical spectra indicated an upward shift of the Cd0.64Zn0.36Te conduction band edge compared with CdTe, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first principle calculation. Photoluminescence decay measurement also indicated the enhanced electron injection rate and decreased charge recombination of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QD sensitized TiO2 films. In addition, by optimizing the deposition cycles of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QDs sensitized solar cells was enhanced.

Abstract:At present, quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) still exhibit moderate power conversion efficiency (with record efficiency of 6-7%), limited primarily by charge recombination. Therefore, suppressing recombination processes is a mandatory requirement to boost the performance of QDSCs. Herein, we demonstrate the ability of a novel sequential inorganic ZnS/SiO2 double layer treatment onto the QD-sensitized photoanode for strongly inhibiting interfacial recombination processes in QDSCs while providing improved cell stability. Theoretical modeling and impedance spectroscopy reveal that the combined ZnS/SiO2 treatment reduces interfacial recombination and increases charge collection efficiency when compared with conventional ZnS treatment alone. In line with those results, subpicosecond THz spectroscopy demonstrates that while QD to TiO2 electron-transfer rates and yields are insensitive to inorganic photoanode overcoating, back recombination at the oxide surface is strongly suppressed by subsequent inorganic treatments. By exploiting this approach, CdSe(x)Te(1-x) QDSCs exhibit a certified record efficiency of 8.21% (8.55% for a champion cell), an improvement of 20% over the previous record high efficiency of 6.8%, together with an additional beneficial effect of improved cell stability.
Enhancing Loading Amount And Performance Of Quantum-Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells Based On Direct Adsorption Of Quantum Dots From Bicomponent Solvents

Abstract:Intrinsically weak interaction between oil-soluble quantum dots (QDs) and TiO2 in a direct adsorption process limits QD loading and the performance of QD-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). Herein, the underlying chemistry and mechanisms governing QD adsorption on TiO2 were studied to improve QD loading and cell performance. Experimental results indicate that solvent polarity plays the crucial role in determining QD loading. Compared with single-component solvents, substantially greater QD loading can be realized at the critical point (CP) of bicomponent solvents, where QDs become metastable and start to precipitate. Through this strategy, average efficiency of 12.24% was obtained for ZCISe QDSCs, which is comparable to those based on the capping ligand induced self-assembly route. This report demonstrates the great potential of bicomponent solvents at the CP for high QD loading and excellent cell performance and presents a platform for assembling functional composites with the use of different nanocrystals and substrates.

Abstract:Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have captured a host of researchers' attention due to their unique properties, which have been introduced to lots of optoelectronics areas, such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and solar cells. Herein, the authors aim at reviewing the achievements of PQDs applied to solar cells in recent years. The engineering concerning surface ligands, additives, and hybrid composition for PQDSCs is outlined first, followed by analyzing the reasons of undesired performance of PQDSCs. Subsequently, a novel overview that PQDs are utilized to improve the photovoltaic performance of various kinds of solar cells, is provided. Finally, this review is summarized and some challenges and perspectives concerning PQDs are also discussed.

This work provides a brief overview of PQDSCs, including the synthesis of PQDs, the characteristics and preparation methods of PQDs, the photoelectric properties as the light absorption layer and optimization methods for PQDSCs with high efficiency. Future directions and potential applications are also highlighted.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) offers an efficient and easily implemented technology for future energy supply. Compared to conventional silicon solar cells, it provides comparable power conversion efficiency (PCE) at low material and manufacturing costs. DSSC materials such as titanium oxide (TiO2) are inexpensive, abundant and innocuous to the environment. Since DSSC materials are less prone to contamination and processable at ambient temperature, a roll-to-roll process could be utilized to print DSSCs on the mass production line. DSSCs perform better under lower light intensities, which makes them an excellent choice for indoor applications. Due to the advancement of molecular engineering, colored and transparent thin films have been introduced to enhance the aesthetic values. Up to now, such benefits have attracted considerable research interests and commercialization effort. Here, this review examines advanced techniques and research trends of this promising technology from the perspective of device modeling, state-of-art techniques, and novel device structures.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are nanocrystals with three-dimensional confined excitons, showing size/shape/ composition-dependent optical properties with broadband absorption from ultraviolet to near infrared, high quantum yield, large Stokes shift and good photo/chemical stability, which have been widely applied in solar energy conversion applications such as solar cells (SCs), luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. However, most of the high-performance QDs-solar energy conversion devices are still based on QDs containing highly toxic heavy metals (such as Pb, Cd, Hg-based chalcogenides), which can inevitably induce the human health and environmental pollution issues, thus hindering their future commercialization Developing high-efficiency solar energy conversion devices based on environmentally friendly QDs is a promising research direction to promote the practical application. Towards this effort, a new generation of environment-friendly semiconductor QDs (such as carbon QDs, silicon QDs, III-V compound QDs, I-III-VI compound QDs and lead-free perovskite QDs) has recently attracted extensive research interests. Here, notable advances and developments of solar cells, luminescent solar concentrators and photoelectrochemical cells based on these environmentally friendly QDs are summarized. Various strategies including band gap engineering, core/shell structure construction, doping, defect states tuning and alloying of these eco-friendly QDs as well as relevant QDs-based device performance are discussed in detail. Specifically, growing core/shell structure can effectively passivate the surface defect states, inhibit the non-radiative recombination and improve the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as well as photo-/chemical-stability of QDs. The optical absorption and PL spectra of QDs can be precisely tuned by altering the concentration of dopants and chemical compositions of QDs to match the solar spectrum for high-efficiency utilization of solar energy. Alloying strategy also enables the realization of optimized intrinsic and surface defects. tailored band structure and improved photo-/chemical-stability of QDs, thus enhancing the performance of corresponding QDs-solar conversion devices. Furthermore, the current existing challenges and drawbacks are analyzed, providing guidelines for future developments of eco-friendly QDs-based solar energy conversion devices. In summary, the rational design and synthesis of eco-friendly QDs with broad light absorption, highly efficient charge separation/transfer and outstanding photo-/chemical-stability are beneficial to improve the performance of "green" QDs-solar energy conversion devices. For QD's synthesis, low-temperature, less toxic and large-scale synthetic technology with reduced energy consumption and eliminated toxic organic solvents/surfactants should be developed to achieve future cost-effective and high quality QDs. For QDs-SCs, the best reported power conversion efficiency of state-of-the-art QDs-SCs is still much lower than that of the commercialized silicon SCs. It is of great significance to explore more SCs device performance and stability optimization strategies. For QDs-LSCs, the balance between reabsorption loss and PLQY should be further studied and the standard measurement methodology needs to be refined. For QDs-PEC devices, the long-term durability of QDs under device operation needs to be largely improved for real-life application. Besides, the electrolyte used in most of the current QDs-PEC systems contains sacrificial agents (e.g., Na2S/Na2SO3) with highly corrosive feature, which may induce environmental issues and should be properly replaced by neutral solution for future commercial perspectives.

Abstract:Quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) are renowned energy devices known for their distinct qualities, including (i) the ability to harvest sunlight that generates multiple electron–hole pairs, (ii) simplicity in fabrication, and (iii) low cost. The power conversion efficiency (η) rates of many QDSSCs are lower than those of dye-sensitized solar cells, reaching a maximum of 12% as a result of narrow absorption ranges and of the charge recombination occurring at the QD– and TiO2–electrolyte interfaces. New types of sensitizers are necessary to be developed to further increase the η of QDSSCs. Semiconductor QDs are the most applicable material for photosensitization because of their high absorption and the obtained emission spectra that can be manipulated by varying dot sizes.This paper presents an overview of recent studies on QDSSC photosensitization and provides suggestions to improve QDSSCs by explicitly comparing different sensitizers. Particular focus is directed on the behavior of several important types of semiconductor nanomaterials (sensitizers such as CdS, Ag2S, CdSe, CdTe, CdHgTe, InAs, and PbS) and other nanomaterials that are TiO2, ZnO, and carbon-based species. These materials are developed to enhance the electron transfer efficiency of QDSSCs. Understanding the mechanism of various photosensitization processes can provide design guidelines for future successful applications.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite solar cell (PSC) has successfully distinguished itself in optoelectronic field by virtue of the sharp rise in power conversion efficiency over the past decade. The remarkable efficiency breakthrough at such a fast speed can be mainly attributed to the comprehensive study on film deposition techniques, especially the effective management of surface and interfacial defects in recent works. Herein, we summarized the current trends in performance enhancement for PSCs, with a focus on the generally applicable strategies in high-performance works, involving deposition methods, compositional engineering, additive engineering, crystallization manipulation, charge transport material selection, interfacial passivation, optical coupling effect and constructing tandem solar cells. Promising directions and perspectives are also provided.

The QDSCs based on TiO2/QD/BP photoanode achieve a champion efficiency of 15.66%. How to improve the capacity of light‐harvesting is still an important point and essential strategy for the assembling of high‐efficiency quantum dot–sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). A believable approach is to implant new light absorption materials into QDSCs to stimulate the charge transfer. Herein, the few‐layer black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are synthesized by electrochemical intercalation technology using bulk BP as source. Then the obtained BPQDs are deposited onto the surface of Zn–Cu–In–S–Se (ZCISSe) QD‐sensitized TiO2 substrate to serve as another light‐harvesting material for the first time. The experimental results have shown that BPQDs can not only increase the absorption intensity by photoanode but also reduce unnecessary charge recombination processes at the interface of photoanode/electrolyte. Through optimizing the size and deposition process of BPQDs, the champion power conversion efficiency of ZCISSe QDSCs is increased to 15.66% (26.88 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.816 V, fill factor [FF] = 0.714) when compared with the original value of 14.11% (Jsc = 25.41 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.779 V, FF = 0.713).

Abstract:Quantum dot solar cells (QDSCs) have been noted for their exceptional optoelectronic properties, including strong light absorption and a tunable bandgap, which are vital for photovoltaic applications. However, quantum dots (QDs) are limited by their electronic properties and stability owing to the insulating nature of hydrocarbon ligands. The integration of organic conjugated materials (OCMs) into QDSCs has emerged as a promising strategy for overcoming these challenges by exploiting their multiple roles in QDSCs. In this review, we discuss and categorize the synergistic effects between OCMs and QDs in QDSCs, which accentuate crucial performance factors such as charge extraction and interdot conductivity, as well as recent research strategies for incorporating OCMs. Furthermore, we outline the fundamental principles for the efficient design of OCMs in QDSCs and offer strategic guidance for the development of high-performance QDSCs. We believe that this review provides in-depth insights necessary for creating new avenues for the development of advanced QDSCs.
