Abstract:The discovery of the Haber-Bosch process in the early 20th century facilitated the industrial synthesis of ammonia, thereby making a substantial contribution to the evolution of human society. Currently, towards a carbon-free economy, the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen (NRR) offers a promising, alternative technology to produce ammonia under mild conditions, given that it is a clean process without discernible environmental impact. However, despite significant efforts to construct superior catalysts and efficient reaction systems, the reaction rate and faraday efficiency for ammonia production remain well below the industrial threshold, primarily due to the difficulty in breaking N = N bonds. Theoretical studies provide important support for fundamental understanding of the catalytic mechanism and electrocatalytic process, so as to carry out more reasonable and orientated design of reaction systems. In the present review, we focus on the theoretical and computational research developments in electrocatalytic NRR systems from a theoretical perspective at multiple scales, including DFT studies at the electronic level, thermodynamics and dynamics at the molecular level and machine learning at the big-data level. Hopefully, the guiding significance for practical applications may help to comprehensively understand the NRR process and accelerate the improvement of NRR production efficiency.

Abstract:Ammonia is one of the most important chemicals due to its enormous applications in fertilizer production and as an energy carrier. The production of ammonia mainly relies on the traditional Haber-Bosch process under high temperature and pressure, leading to massive energy consumption and notable environmental issues. Recently, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic nitrogen (N-2) fixation have emerged for achieving green production of ammonia owing to their features of environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. However, ammonia production through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis is still far away from practical applications. To facilitate the practical applications, a thorough understanding of nitrogen fixation is highly desired for the future design of high-efficiency catalysts. Here, the fundamental investigations on electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are summarized. Based on the fundamental understanding, the current approaches and design strategies for heterogeneous catalysts toward electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are then presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this field are outlined, leveraging the existing understanding on structure-property relationships. It is anticipated that this review sheds some light on the development of advanced catalytic systems for ammonia production through N-2 fixation.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is one of the most widely used chemicals in industry and agriculture, which is very important to the global economy. At present, the Haber Bosch process is adopted for ammonia synthesis in industry. The experimental temperature and pressure used in this process are relatively high, the process energy consumption is high, the one-way conversion of the hydrogen is low, and a large amount of carbon dioxide is discharged into the atmosphere, causing pollution to the environment. To solve its shortcomings, researchers began a new exploration. Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction (NRR), as a clean and sustainable method of ammonia synthesis, has attracted extensive attention. However, the low activity and selectivity of electrocatalysts are one of the important challenges. Therefore, the search for cost-effective electrocatalysts has become one of the research hotspots of electrochemical ammonia synthesis. For enhancing the catalytic performance and selective performance of catalysts, scientists have carried out a lot of research on electrochemical nitrogen fixation catalysts. In this review article, electrolytic experimental devices, common ammonia detection research methods, and the electrocatalytic NRR mechanism are summarized, and then the research progress in electrocatalysts (precious metals, transition metals, and non-precious metals) is summarized. Then, the research progress of metal-based electrocatalysts is introduced, and the relevant theoretical calculations are given. The discussion of different catalytic systems provides ideas for the development and improvement of subsequent NRR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is considered to be a critical chemical feedstock in agriculture, industry, and other fields. However, conventional Haber–Bosch (HB) ammonia (NH3) production suffers from high energy consumption, harsh reaction conditions, and large carbon dioxide emissions. Despite the emergence of electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogenous substances to NH3 under ambient conditions as a new frontier, there are several bottleneck problems that impede the commercialization process. These include low catalytic efficiency, competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction, and difficulties in breaking the N≡N triple bond. In this review, we explore the recent advances in electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis, using nitrogen and nitrate as reactants. We focus on the contribution of the catalyst design, specifically based on molecular–catalyst interaction mechanisms, as well as chemical bond breaking and directional coupling mechanisms, to address the aforementioned problems during electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis. Finally, we discuss the relevant opportunities and challenges in this field.

Abstract:Global ammonia production reached 175 million metric tons in 2016, 90% of which is produced from high purity N2 and H2 gases at high temperatures and pressures via the Haber-Bosch process. Reliance on natural gas for H2 production results in large energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Concerns of human-induced climate change are spurring an international scientific effort to explore new approaches to ammonia production and reduce its carbon footprint. Electrocatalytic N2 reduction to ammonia is an attractive alternative that can potentially enable ammonia synthesis under milder conditions in small-scale, distributed, and on-site electrolysis cells powered by renewable electricity generated from solar or wind sources. This review provides a comprehensive account of theoretical and experimental studies on electrochemical nitrogen fixation with a focus on the low selectivity for reduction of N2 to ammonia versus protons to H2. A detailed introduction to ammonia detection methods and the execution of control experiments is given as they are crucial to the accurate reporting of experimental findings. The main part of this review focuses on theoretical and experimental progress that has been achieved under a range of conditions. Finally, comments on current challenges and potential opportunities in this field are provided.

Abstract:Natural nitrogen cycle has been severely disrupted by anthropogenic activities. The overuse of N‐containing fertilizers induces the increase of nitrate level in surface and ground waters, and substantial emission of nitrogen oxides causes heavy air pollution. Nitrogen gas, as the main component of air, has been used for mass ammonia production for over a century, providing enough nutrition for agriculture to support world population increase. In the last decade, researchers have made great efforts to develop ammonia processes under ambient conditions to combat the intensive energy consumption and high carbon emission associated with the Haber‐Bosch process. Among different techniques, electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) can achieve nitrate removal and ammonia generation simultaneously using renewable electricity as the power, and there is an exponential growth of studies in this research direction. Here we provide a timely and comprehensive review on the important progresses of electrochemical NO3RR, covering the rational design of electrocatalysts, emerging C‐N coupling reactions, and advanced energy conversion and storage systems. Moreover, future perspectives are proposed to accelerate the industrialized NH3 production and green synthesis of chemicals, leading to a sustainable nitrogen cycle via prosperous N‐based electrochemistry. Abstract:Ammonia is one of the most important chemicals in modern world for food supply, yet its production through nitrogen reduction is mainly relied on the Haber-Bosch process, requiring rigid reaction conditions including high temperature and pressure. Recently, electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation into ammonia has provoked wide attention due to its capability to be performed under mild condition, with the electricity as the only power input. Nevertheless, the conventional metal-based electrocatalysts normally suffers from their difficulty in balancing the competitive reactions of nitrogen adsorption/activation and hydrogen generation, hampering the ammonia production efficiency. Lately, metal-free electrocatalysts have turned up as a promising candidate for such an approach due to their highly controllable surface-structure and relatively sluggish hydrogen generation activity. In this rev iew, we summarize recent progress in electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction using metal-free electrocatalysts, with the particular emphasis on their electronic structure and microstructure modulations for ameliorating N-2 adsorption/activation and electron transfer. Finally, the challenges and future directions of metal-free catalyst for nitrogen reduction reaction are given.

Abstract:The Haber-Bosch process is the most widely used synthetic ammonia technology at present. Since its invention, it has provided an important guarantee for global food security. However, the traditional Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis process consumes a lot of energy and causes serious environmental pollution. Under the serious pressure of energy and environment, a green, clean, and sustainable ammonia synthesis route is urgently needed. Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia is a green and mild new method for preparing ammonia, which can directly convert nitrogen or nitrate into ammonia using electricity driven by solar, wind, or water energy, without greenhouse gas and toxic gas emissions. Herein, the basic mechanism of the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia and nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 − RR) to ammonia were discussed. The representative approaches and major technologies, such as lithium mediated electrolysis and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) electrolysis for NRR, high activity catalyst and advanced electrochemical device fabrication for NO 3 − RR and electrochemical ammonia synthesis were summarized. Based on the above discussion and analysis, the main challenges and development directions for electrochemical ammonia synthesis were further proposed.

Abstract:<p>Ammonia (NH<sub>3</sub>) is a pivotal precursor in fertilizer production and a potential energy carrier. Currently, ammonia production worldwide relies on the traditional Haber–Bosch process, which consumes massive energy and has a large carbon footprint. Recently, electrochemical dinitrogen reduction to ammonia under ambient conditions has attracted considerable interest owing to its advantages of flexibility and environmental friendliness. However, the biggest challenge in dinitrogen electroreduction, i.e., the low efficiency and selectivity caused by poor specificity of electrocatalysts/electrolytic systems, still needs to be overcome. Although substantial progress has been made in recent years, acquiring most available electrocatalysts still relies on low efficiency trial‐and‐error methods. It is thus imperative to establish some critical guiding principles for nitrogen electroreduction toward a rational design and accelerated development of this field. Herein, a basic understanding of dinitrogen electroreduction processes and the inherent relationships between adsorbates and catalysts from fundamental theory are described, followed by an outline of the crucial principles for designing efficient electrocatalysts/electrocatalytic systems derived from a systematic evaluation of the latest significant achievements. Finally, the future research directions and prospects of this field are given, with a special emphasis on the opportunities available by following the guiding principles.</p>

Abstract:Ammonia (NH 3 ) plays a significant role in fertilizer production to support the ever-increasing population and serves as a renewable energy carrier as well as a zero-carbon emission fuel. Currently, NH 3 is produced by a non-sustainable and highly energy-intensive process. Among the available alternatives, the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR) has attracted attention due to the compact and on-site electrolytic cells that can operate from solar or wind power under ambient conditions but still suffer from relatively low Faraday efficiency and NH 3 yields. For the commercialization of electrocatalytic NRR, a catalytic material demonstrating a FE ∼50% and an NH 3 yield rate of ∼10 −6 mol s −1 cm −2 is suggested. Various strategies, including amorphization, structural engineering, catalyst-support interactions and hydrogen evolution suppression over catalytic materials, have been presented to enhance the electrocatalytic NRR. In this review, the current progress of various identified NRR electrocatalysts (including metal carbides, nitrides, oxides, phosphides, sulfides, selenides, borides, bimetallic materials, metal-organic frameworks, and metal-free materials) is summarized by collectively focusing on both theoretical analysis and experimental investigations. For further development of rational catalysts, a collaboration of theoretical and experimental studies, advanced characterization techniques, understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism, efficient screening systems, and precise detection methods are needed. Specially designed electrocatalysts can improve NRR activity by regulating the cathodic reactions. The challenges and future perspectives have been described with special emphasis on various transition metal-based electrocatalysts for N 2 fixation.

Abstract:Abstract The presence of nitrate in industrial, domestic and agricultural wastewater has a detrimental impact on both ecosystem and human health, as remediation and purification efforts are slow, challenging and difficult, given the high solubility and stability of this pollutant. Taking nitrate into high value‐added ammonia by electrochemical reduction can overcome high pollution and energy consumption limit of Haber‐Bosch process with long‐term significance of environmental protection and energy saving. This review summarized the research progress on the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia, with a focus on the reaction mechanisms, influencing factors, product detection methods, performance evaluation methods and the research status of electrocatalysts up to now. The review reported the latest strategies employed to design efficient electrocatalysts, such as pore structure regulation, alloying, heterostructure construction, defect and interface engineering, crystal surface regulation and microenvironment modulation of single‐atom catalysts. It highlights critical factors that determin the performance in terms of nitrate adsorption, exposed active sites, mass transfer rate, intermediates barrier and side reactions, as well as the stability of electrocatalysts and recovery of ammonia. In addition, the future direction of technology for electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia has also been proposed.

Abstract:2D materials, metal‐free, are considered as potential promising catalysts for ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advanced process in nitrogen fixation on 2D materials from the theoretical and experimental aspects. Especially, the structure–activity correlations are built up from the computational mind, and new data‐driven method is provided to design new catalyst. Environmentally friendly ammonia production is important for addressing the carbon emissions and substantial energy consumption that are currently associated with the chemical industry. In recent decades, many achievements are made in this area; however, low production yield, poor selectivity, and unsatisfactory Faradaic efficiency hinder large‐scale applications. 2D, metal‐free electrocatalysts stand out from other candidates because of their physical, electronic, and chemical properties. In this work, recent developments of 2D‐based electrochemical materials for converting dinitrogen into ammonia in ambient conditions are systematically reviewed. First, recent unique progress and challenges on novel 2D electrocatalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction are summarized. Then, various synthetic strategies for electrochemical materials and the influence of these methods have on the intrinsic material performance are highlighted. Last, by comparing current engineering strategies, electrochemical tests, and computational calculations, the opportunities, critical issues, and scientific challenges for 2D nanomaterials as stable, efficient catalysts, are analyzed. On the basis of this comparison, technology solutions are provided and rational principles for future work are proposed.

Abstract:Powered by renewable electricity, the electrochemical reduction of nitrogen to ammonia is proposed as a promising alternative to the energy- and capital-intensive Haber-Bosch process, and has thus attracted much attention from the scientific community. However, this process suffers from low NH3 yields and Faradaic efficiency. The development of more effective electrocatalysts is of vital importance for the practical applications of this reaction. Of the reported catalysts, single-atom catalysts (SACs) show the significant advantages of efficient atom utilization and unsaturated coordination configurations, which offer great scope for optimizing their catalytic performance. Herein, progress in state-of-the-art SACs applied in the electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is discussed, and the main advantages and challenges for developing more efficient electrocatalysts are also highlighted.

Abstract:Ammonia is an essential chemical for producing fertilizers and energy carriers. However, the industrial Haber-Bosch process causes huge CO2 emissions and energy waste. As a promising alternative for Haber-Bosch process, electrochemical synthesis of ammonia has drawn much attention. Catalysts, as a vital part of electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), have developed rapidly in recent years. Compared to noble-metal catalysts, noble-metal-free catalysts possess a low-cost advantage. In this review, noble-metal-free catalysts, including metal-based materials, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), MXenes, and metal-free materials, are summarized. In addition, effective design strategies are discussed, along with the main problems and some potential directions of noble-metal-free NRR catalysts.

Abstract:The efficient activation of dinitrogen for the production of ammonia plays a crucial role in our modern society, considering the significant impact of ammonia on food, chemicals, and energy. As an attractive alternative to the century-old Haber-Bosch process which is responsible for 1-2% of global energy consumption, utilization of half the hydrogen produced globally, and similar to 1% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, the ambient electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction has attracted tremendous interest during the past few years. Some achievements have revealed the possibility of this process, but have also identified great challenges. The activity and selectivity of the nitrogen reduction reaction are fundamentally limited by competing hydrogen evolution and nitrogen scaling relations, while low production rates and ubiquitous contaminants plague experimental practices. Aiming toward higher accuracy and reproducibility of claimed results, and more meaningful, impactful, and insightful research, this tutorial review summarizes the present status and challenges in the study of ambient electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction, followed by a thorough discussion of various experimental parameters. We then recommend a series of protocols and best practices for experiments, and also highlight some potential directions for future research in this exciting and important field.

Abstract:The conversion of N 2 to NH 3 holds great importance due to the essential role of NH 3 in fertilizer production, energy storage and the synthesis of key industrial chemicals. Development of novel methods for N 2 transformation is a worthwhile goal and researchers have turned their attention to electrochemical N 2 reduction as a potentially sustainable solution. The development of molecular electrocatalysts has gained considerable momentum over the last decades, and this review focuses on the advances and challenges in the field of molecular electrochemical nitrogen fixation and aims to inspire further research into the realm of nitrogen fixation chemistry from an electrochemical perspective.

Abstract:The excessive enrichment of nitrate in the environment can be converted into ammonia (NH3) through electrochemical processes, offering significant implications for modern agriculture and the potential to reduce the burden of the Haber‐Bosch (HB) process while achieving environmentally‐friendly NH3 production. Emerging research on electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (eNitRR) to NH3 has gained considerable momentum in recent years for efficient NH3 synthesis. However, existing reviews on nitrate reduction have primarily focused on limited aspects, often lacking a comprehensive summary of catalysts, reaction systems, reaction mechanisms, and detection methods employed in nitrate reduction. This review aims to provide a timely and comprehensive analysis of the eNitRR field by integrating existing research progress and identifying current challenges. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the research progress achieved using various materials in electrochemical nitrate reduction, elucidates the underlying theoretical mechanism behind eNitRR, and discusses effective strategies based on numerous case studies to enhance the electrochemical reduction from NO3˗ to NH3. Finally, this review discusses challenges and development prospects in the eNitRR field with an aim to guide design and development of large‐scale sustainable nitrate reduction electrocatalysts.
