Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Nanostructured MnO2 with various morphologies exhibits excellent performance in environmental catalysis owing to its large specific surface area, low density, and adjustable chemical properties. The one-dimensional MnO2 nanowire has been proved to be the dominant morphology among various nanostructures, such as nanorods, nanofibers, nanoflowers, etc. The syntheses and applications of MnO2-based nanowires also have become a research hotspot in environmental catalytic materials over the last two decades. With the continuous deepening of the research, the control of morphology and crystal facet exposure in the synthesis of MnO2 nanowire materials have gradually matured, and the catalytic performance also has been greatly improved. Differences in the crystalline phase structure, preferably exposed crystal facets, and even the length of the MnO2 nanowires will evidently affect the final catalytic performances. Besides, the modifications by doping or loading will also significantly affect their catalytic performances. This review carefully summarizes the synthesis strategies of MnO2 nanowires developed in recent years as well as the influences of the phase structure, crystal facet, morphology, dopant, and loading amount on the catalytic performance. Besides, the cutting-edge applications of MnO2 nanowires in the field of environmental catalysis, such as CO oxidation, the removal of VOCs, denitrification, etc., have been also summarized. The application of MnO2 nanowire in environmental catalysis is still in the early exploratory stage. The gigantic gap between theoretical investigation and industrial application is still a great challenge. Compared with noble metal based traditional environmental catalytic materials, the lower cost of MnO2 has injected new momentum and promising potential into this research field.

Abstract:Heterogeneous periodate (IO 4 - , PI) activation systems have emerged as a promising technology alternative for organic wastewater decontamination, with activator choice being crucial. Although effective, conventional synthesis of transition metal materials can be restricted by complex preparation methods, low yields, and poor reproducibility. Herein, four commercially available manganese oxides (Mn x O y ) were directly selected to activate PI for contaminant removal. Manganese tetraoxide (Mn 3 O 4 ) effectively activated PI, producing reactive species of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and iodyl radicals (IO 3 • ). The reaction rate of the Mn 3 O 4 + PI system (0.22 min −1 , near-neutral conditions) was 3.67, 1.29, and 2.00 times higher than those of the MnO + PI, MnO 2 + PI, and Mn 2 O 3 + PI systems, respectively. Moreover, the Mn 3 O 4 + PI system demonstrated good resistance to co-existing environmental ions and natural organic matter, rapid removal of various refractory pollutants, and applicability confirmed by multiple reproducibility experiments and continuous flow operations. Differences in active species and intrinsic catalytic mechanisms were uncovered using capture experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analyses, probes, and theoretical calculations. The distinct degradation product pathways of various oxidants and pollutants in different Mn x O y systems were also thoroughly examined. This work provides a new perspective on selecting scalable production catalysts for oxidant-activated systems, while validating the versatile applications of commercial materials for further exploration.

Abstract:Manganese(III/IV) oxide minerals are known to spontaneously degrade organic pollutants in nature. However, the kinetics are too slow to be useful for engineered water treatment processes. Herein, we demonstrate that nanoscale Mn3O4 particles under nanoscale spatial confinement (down to 3-5 nm) can significantly accelerate the kinetics of pollutant degradation, nearly 3 orders of magnitude faster compared to the same reaction in the unconfined bulk phase. We first employed an anodized aluminum oxide scaffold with uniform channel dimensions for experimental and computational studies. We found that the observed kinetic enhancement resulted from the increased surface area of catalysts exposed to the reaction, as well as the increased local proton concentration at the Mn3O4 surface and subsequent acceleration of acid-catalyzed reactions even at neutral pH in bulk. We further demonstrate that a reactive Mn3O4-functionalized ceramic ultrafiltration membrane, a more suitable scaffold for realistic water treatment, achieved nearly complete removal of various phenolic and aniline pollutants, operated under a common ultrafiltration water flux. Our findings mark an important advance toward the development of catalytic membranes that can degrade pollutants in addition to their intrinsic function as a physical separation barrier, especially since they are based on accelerating natural catalytic pathways that do not require any chemical addition.

Abstract:Manganese oxides of octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2) type have important applications in oxidation catalysis, adsorption, and as battery materials. The synthesis methods employed determine their morphology and textural properties which markedly affect their catalytic activity. In this work, a room temperature ultrasonic atomization assisted synthesis of OMS-2 type materials is demonstrated. This synthesis differs from previously reported methods in that it is a simple, no-heat application that leads to a striking morphological characteristic of uniformly sized OMS-2 fibers and their self-assembly into dense as well as hollow spheres. Control of various parameters in the ultrasonic atomization assisted synthesis led to OMS-2 with high surface areas (between 136-160 m2 g-1) and mesoporosity. Catalytically these materials have higher activities in the oxidation of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a bio-based chemical, (65% conversion of HMF vs. 14% with conventional OMS-2 catalyst) and a higher adsorption of lead from aqueous solutions (70% vs. 12% in conventional OMS-2 materials).

Abstract:Developing efficient, low-cost and environmental-friendly catalysts is of great significance for heterogeneous activation of persulfates toward strategic purification of wastewater with powerful sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). In this study, a three-dimensional and hierarchical nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon (Co@N-C) was developed via a facile one-pot carbonization of ZIF-67 with a green precursor of urea. Acid treatment was applied to remove the surface unstable cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) to avoid the potential leaching of toxic Co ions. Benefited from the rationally structural design of the carbon precursor and post-treatment with surface engineering, the derived Co@N-C can efficiently activate PMS for fast decomposition of bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution, achieving high removal of total organic carbon (TOC) with trace cobalt leaching. The impacts of diverse reaction parameters on BPA degradation were systematically investigated. More importantly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the entrapped Co NPs can impressively modulate the electronic states of the interacted carbon regions, giving rise to enhanced carbocatalysis with synergistic promotion of N-doping. The embedded Co NPs also afford the carbocatalysts to be magnetic for an easy recycling. Additionally, comprehensive investigations of the evolution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the carbonaceous materials by competitive radical scavenging tests and in situ radical trapping with advanced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed the singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as the dominant ROS rather than sulfate radicals. This study proposed a facile strategy for fabricating novel hybrid nanocarbon catalysts with N-doping and magnetic property and enables new mechanistic insights into carbocatalysis in AOPs, providing a promising system for green wastewater remediation.

Abstract:As emerging micro/nano-scale devices, micro/nanomotors have been innovatively applied in the environmental and biomedical applications. In this paper, the recent advances of Mn-based micro/nanomotors (Mn-micro/nanomotors) in catalytic oxidation of organic contaminants and the mechanisms in decomposition of H2O2 (e.g., the generation of O2 bubbles and reactive oxygen species) are reviewed. The intrinsic characteristics and synthetic strategies of Mn-based materials are discussed, aiming to gain comprehensive understandings on the asymmetric design of micro/nanomotors. Mn-micro/nanomotors have many advantages such as flexible structures, biocompatibility, powerful motion, long lifetime, and low-cost as compared to noble-metal micro/nanomotors. These merits fulfil Mn-micro/nanomotors great promises from proof-of-concept studies to realistic applications, including pollutant decomposition, trace detection of heavy metal ions, oil removal, drug delivery, isolation of biological targets, and killing bacteria and cancer cells. The great flexibility in fabrication enables diverse and innovative strategies to address challenges for Mn-micro/nanomotors, including high consumption of H2O2 and non-directional motion. Meanwhile, a perspective of Mn-micro/nanomotors in water remediation by coupling the motors with other Fenton/Fenton-like systems to enhance the catalytic activity and to yield more reactive oxygen species is presented. Directions to the design of on-demand H2O2-fueled Mn-micro/nanomotors for advanced purification of organic contaminants in aquatic systems are also proposed.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide new opportunities for the simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation. Enhanced oxygen reduction capacity of cost-effective metal-based catalysts in an air cathode is essential for the scale-up and commercialization of MFCs in the field of wastewater treatment. We demonstrated that a nano-structured MnO(x) material, prepared by an electrochemically deposition method, could be an effective catalyst for oxygen reduction in an MFC to generate electricity with the maximum power density of 772.8 mW/m(3) and remove organics when the MFC was fed with an acetate-laden synthetic wastewater. The nano-structured MnO(x) with the controllable size and morphology could be readily obtained with the electrochemical deposition method. Both morphology and manganese oxidation state of the nano-scale catalyst were largely dependent on the electrochemical preparation process, and they governed its catalytic activity and the cathodic oxygen reduction performance of the MFC accordingly. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry (CV) performed on each nano-structured material suggests that the MnO(x) nanorods had an electrochemical activity towards oxygen reduction reaction via a four-electron pathway in a neutral pH solution. This work provides useful information on the facile preparation of cost-effective cathodic catalysts in a controllable way for the single-chamber air-cathode MFC for wastewater treatment.
Nanostructured Co-Mn Containing Perovskites for Degradation of Pollutants: Insight into the Activity and Stability.

Abstract:The efficient oxidative removal of persistent organic components in wastewater relies on low-cost heterogeneous catalysts that offer high catalytic activity, stability, and recyclability. Here, we designed a series of nanostructured Co-Mn containing perovskite catalysts, LaCo1-xMnO3+delta (LCM, x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0), with over-stoichiometric oxygen (8 > 0) to show superior catalytic activity for the degradation of a variety of persistent aqueous organic pollutants by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The nature of LCM for catalysis was comprehensively investigated. A "volcano-shaped" correlation was observed between the catalytic activity and electron filling (e(g)) of Co in LCM. Among these compounds, LaCo0.5Mn0.5O3+delta (LCM55) exhibited an excellent activity with e(g) = 1.27. The high interstitial oxygen ion diffusion rate (D-O(2-) = 1.58 +/- 0.01 x 10(-13) cm(2)s(-1)) of LCM55 also contributes to its catalytic activity. The enhanced stability of LCM55 can be ascribed to its stronger relative acidity (3.22). Moreover, an increased solution pH (pH >= 7) generated a faster organic degradation rate and a decrease in metal leaching (0.004 mM) for LCM55 perovskite, justifying it as a potential material for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting is a very prospective technique to obtain the green hydrogen fuel. The oxygen evolution reaction becomes a limitation owing to the multiple electron transfer process. Thereby, a lot of attention is paid on the development of noble-metal free electrocatalysts for boosting the water oxidation process. The heterostructure of Mn3O4 nanoparticles on Cu(OH)2 nanowire arrays is fabricated, which exhibits an electrocatalytic activity close to RuO2. Compared with the single (hydro)oxides, the largely improved performance of the heterostructure towards water oxidation can be attributed to the enhanced charge transfer by the electronic interaction across the interface and the increased active sites for the rational combination of different active species. This work can be valuable for highlighting the role of heterostructure in the design and development of novel transition metal-based electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

Abstract:In this study, controlled synthesis of hollow mesoporous silica nanoreactors with small manganese oxide nanoparticles in their cavities (Mn x O y @HMSNs) is reported, and the dye degradation performance in the presence of hydrogen peroxide over Mn x O y @HMSNs is investigated. Specifically, triple ligands (a compound with three dipicolinic acid groups) were used to coordinate manganese ions to form negatively charged coordination complex networks, which further combine with positively charged copolymers to obtain metal ion-containing polymer micelles. Following silica deposition onto micellar coronas and calcinations simultaneously result in hollow mesoporous silica nanoreactors and manganese oxide nanoparticles in their cavities. In this work, the influences of synthetic parameters on the structures are studied in detail. The obtained Mn x O y @HMSNs show greatly enhanced activity and stability for a series of dye degradations. The performance enhancement is ascribed to their unique nanostructures, where mesoporous silica walls provide protection to the inner Mn x O y nanoparticles and the small size of the manganese oxide nanoparticles greatly enhances the dye degradation activity.

Abstract:Electrochemical N-2 reduction reaction (NRR) is an environmentally benign and sustainable approach for NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions, which needs efficient electrocatalyst to meet the enormous challenge of activating the inert N-2 molecule. Recently, TiO2 emerges as an active NRR electrocatalyst with advantages of abundance, nontoxicity, and high thermal stability. Heteroatom doping is an effective oxygen vacancy introduction strategy to manufacture unique electron and structure properties of metal oxides, which will greatly influence the catalysts' activity. In this work, we developed Mn-doped TiO2 nanospheres (Mn-TiO2) for electrochemical NRR. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, Mn-TiO2 shows a large NH3 yield rate of 20.05 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.93%, which are much higher than undoped TiO2. The mechanism of performance improvement is uncovered by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Due to the dimensional confinement, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures have exposed more active atoms, allowing faster electron transport; Furthermore, Doping is widely used to modulate the local electronic structure within the material. In this work, we proposed a strategy for the facile synthesis of ultrathin transition metal-doped nanosheets. The 2D Mn/RuO2 nanosheets prepared by rapid thermal annealing (RTA), required an overpotential of only 185 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 under acidic solution, which was much lower than that of commercial IrO2. This finding provides a promising strategy for the reduction of precious metal content and the preparation of ultrathin nanosheet, and brings inspiration for the design and fabrication of other advanced nano-catalysts.

Abstract:Nano-Fe0 embedded in N-doped carbon architectures (Fe0@N-C) were used as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for the mineralization of organic pollutants. Fe0@N-C was synthesized through a MOF-mediated recrystallization approach. Fe0@N-C exhibited high activity and reusability, better than that of most conventional metal catalysts. Further, the influences of some representative factors for the PMS activation were comprehensively analyzed and optimized. The enhanced performance of Fe0@N-C was primarily ascribed to abundant reactive oxygen species, especially 1O2, released in the oxidation process at the solid/aqueous interface. Nano-Fe0 wrapped with N-doped graphitic layers could preferentially generate effective Fe0 and Fe-Nx active sites with the electronic structure reconstruction, endowing the outstanding catalytic activity. The unique porous carbon structure not only protected the embedded nano-Fe0 from poisoning or leaching, but also provided suitable mass transfer channels and also promoted electron tunneling efficiency. These outstanding characteristics manifested Fe0@N-C had promising potential for organic pollutant degradation.

Abstract:Electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is an environmentally benign and sustainable approach for NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions, which needs efficient electrocatalyst to meet the enormous challenge of activating the inert N2 molecule. Recently, TiO2 emerges as an active NRR electrocatalyst with advantages of abundance, nontoxicity, and high thermal stability. Heteroatom doping is an effective oxygen vacancy introduction strategy to manufacture unique electron and structure properties of metal oxides, which will greatly influence the catalysts' activity. In this work, we developed Mn-doped TiO2 nanospheres (Mn-TiO2) for electrochemical NRR. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, Mn-TiO2 shows a large NH3 yield rate of 20.05 μg h–1 mgcat.–1 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.93%, which are much higher than undoped TiO2. Abstract:In spite of the superior performance of nanostructured manganese oxides as materials for electrocatalysis, there has been low progress in their theoretical understanding because of the large scale of the required simulation cells. In this work, we have developed a large-scale simulation method for manganese oxides based on the Charge-Transfer Modified Embedded-Atom Method (CT-MEAM), which is not only capable of describing complex atomic bonding in transition metal oxides but also dynamic oxidation states, as those induced by the widely exposed surface area of nanostructures. The reliability of the method is confirmed by comparison with the corresponding ab initio reference results, and afterwards used to investigate the nanostructuring effects on manganese oxide nanorods. We found that nanostructuring introduces surface and edge structural distortions, driven by emerged unsaturated surface ions. These ions are highly mobile, and easily migrate to form new bonds with neighboring ions. Nanostructuring also weakens charge transfer between Mn and O ions located at the outer layers, thus bringing in more reductive Mn ions and enabling oxygen vacancy formation, which ultimately enhances the catalytic activity of manganese oxides. Our results also show that large scale surface defects, such as voids, could produce a similar effect than size reduction in improving the catalytic performance of the nanorod, thus avoiding undesirable amorphization instabilities, which are inevitable at reduced sizes. These findings will help to the optimization of the design and synthesis of nanostructured manganese oxides with enhanced catalytic activity. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:The rapid development of renewable energy technologies such as water splitting, rechargeable metal-air batteries and fuel cells requires highly efficient electrocatalysts capable of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here we report a facile sonication-driven synthesis to deposit the molecular manganese vanadium oxide precursor [Mn4V4O17(OAc)3]3- on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Thermal conversion of this composite at 900 oC gives nanostructured manganese vanadium oxides / carbides which are stably linked to the MWCNTs. The resulting composites show excellent electrochemical reactivity for ORR and OER, and significant reactivity enhancements compared to the precursors and a Pt/C reference are reported. Notably, even under harsh acidic conditions, long-term OER activity at low overpotential is reported. In addition, we report exceptional activity of the composites for the industrially important Cl2 evolution from aqueous HCl electrolyte. The new composite material shows how molecular deposition routes leading to highly active and stable multi-functional electrocatalysts can be developed. The facile design could in principle be extended to multiple catalyst classes by tuning of the molecular metal oxide precursor employed.
