Abstract:Advanced functional materials, drives and transmissions, sensors and mechanisms provide solid foundations for developing intelligent robots, for which modelling and simulation tools have contributed greatly to these developments, and facilitated deployments and applications of intelligent robots. Motivated by rapid developments of sensor fusion, intelligent control and machine learning tools and their widely availability at low cost, this special issue aims at disseminating new modelling and simulation methods for developing intelligent robotic systems and their applications. With the emerging applications to robotics, this focused section competitively selects the 10 research papers covering a spectrum of modeling of novel single robots, human-robot interactive systems, and even robotic automation process, which includes modeling of biped and wearable robots, parallel mechanisms, autonomous robots, and robot-environment interaction, as well as modeling with robot visions.

Abstract:Marine information gathering, transmission, processing, and fusion play an important role in many areas, such as marine science research, environmental expedition, resource exploitation, and security and defense. Owing to its specific application environment, it has also become a popular information science research area. Like other branches of information science, the development of marine information technology over the last thirty years has benefited significantly from advances and achievements in general information theory. However, the manner in which it highlights the close bonding among propagation physics, signal processing, and the marine environment is seldom seen in other areas. This paper first gives a comprehensive overview of the current status of the theory and methods used in surface target acquisition, underwater target recognition, underwater communications and sea-air integrated information transmission, oceanic remote sensing, and data processing and information fusion. Subsequently, with the aim of helping to advance fundamental research on marine information important scientific problems to be addressed are presented.

Abstract:In our continuous exploration and exploitation of the ocean, marine robots are powerful tools for accessing oceanic environments that are sometimes harsh or even too dangerous for humans. Early marine robots acted under human supervision, executing preprogrammed tasks or working under the control of highly trained specialists. In recent years, with the advancements in hardware and software, marine robots have begun to possess the capability to autonomously sense and adapt to the intricate ocean environment, thus working more efficiently and intelligently. By integrating recent advances in science and technology, ranging from biomimetic technology and new materials to advanced artificial intelligence methods, marine robots have the potential to be more powerful in the exploration of the ocean environment and facilitating a broader spectrum of tasks, such as studying marine life in their natural habitats or performing inspections and dexterous manipulation in the deep sea.

Abstract:Utilization and exploitation of marine resources by humans have contributed to the growth of marine research. As technology progresses, artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are progressively being applied to maritime research, complementing traditional marine forecasting models and observation techniques to some degree. This article takes the artificial intelligence algorithmic model as its starting point, references several application trials, and methodically elaborates on the emerging research trend of mixing machine learning and physical modeling concepts. This article discusses the evolution of methodologies for the building of ocean observations, the application of artificial intelligence to remote sensing satellites, smart sensors, and intelligent underwater robots, and the construction of ocean big data. We also cover the method of identifying internal waves (IW), heatwaves, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and sea ice using artificial intelligence algorithms. In addition, we analyze the applications of artificial intelligence models in the prediction of ocean components, including physics-driven numerical models, model-driven statistical models, traditional machine learning models, data-driven deep learning models, and physical models combined with artificial intelligence models. This review shows the growth routes of the application of artificial intelligence in ocean observation, ocean phenomena identification, and ocean elements forecasting, with examples and forecasts of their future development trends from several angles and points of view, by categorizing the various uses of artificial intelligence in the ocean sector.

Abstract:Intensive development today is observed in the areas of data processing and analysis, as well as in the management of robotic systems; Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly used. As the complexity of the tasks facing the Marine Robotic Complex (MRC) increases, the need for the use of AI technologies becomes clear. These technologies provide safe movement and control of marine objects, navigation of MRC in maritime space, development of behavior logic in unknown environments and planning of their movement, as well as optimization of data processing. The development of MRC currently covers various areas for which there is no single solution yet. This article outlines the development process of a simulation complex designed to model an intelligent system (IS) for strategizing the motion of a collective of marine robotic systems. It includes an in-depth exposition of individual modules and the mathematical modeling of the employed algorithms.

Abstract:With the increasing utilization of artificial intelligence technologies in manufacturing systems it is increasingly difficult to differentiate the robots from the machine tools. Innovative robot mechanisms with intelligent perception and learning abilities are now a key concern in advanced robotics and manufacturing systems. This special collection aims to disseminate the latest advances in fundamental and applied research work in the area of robotics and manufacturing systems to the international community. The selected papers include theoretical and experimental work on parallel mechanisms with variable workspace; the kinematics and dynamics of a robot; an over-constrained spatial deployable mechanism; a hybrid continuum robot; dimension synthesis of gear train; evaluation on the collaborative tasks between human and robot; analysis and an experiment on a multi-legged robot; and the design of a hydraulic drive in-pipe robot based on a flexible support structure. All papers in this special issue provide original ideas, algorithms and methods, with clear indication of the advances made in problem formulation, methodology and application with respect to existing results. These achievements reflect the latest theory and technology promotion in robotics and manufacturing systems. We hope these papers are helpful to enhance the interest and development in manufacturing technology. Abstract:Intelligent micromachines, with dimensions ranging from a few millimeters down to hundreds of nanometers, are miniature systems capable of performing specific tasks autonomously at small scales. Enhancing the intelligence of micromachines to tackle the uncertainty and variability in complex microenvironments has applications in minimally invasive medicine, bioengineering, water cleaning, analytical chemistry, and more. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the construction of intelligent micromachines, evolving from simple micromachines to soft, compound, reconfigurable, encodable, multifunctional, and integrated micromachines, as well as from individual to multiagent, multiscale, hierarchical, self-organizing, and swarm micromachines. The field leverages two important trends in robotics research—the miniaturization and intelligentization of machines—but a compelling combination of these two features has yet to be realized. The core technologies required to make such tiny machines intelligent include information media, transduction, processing, exchange, and energy supply, but embedding all of these functions into a system at the micro- or nanoscale is challenging. This article offers a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art technologies used to create intelligence for micromachines and provides insight into the construction of next-generation intelligent micromachines that can adapt to diverse scenarios for use in emerging fields. Biomimetic marine robots are at the forefront of this innovation by imitating various structures and behaviours of marine life and utilizing the evolutionary advantages and adaptations these marine organisms have developed over millennia to thrive in harsh conditions. This thorough examination explores current developments and research efforts in biomimetic marine robots based on their propulsion mechanisms. By examining these biomimetic designs, the review aims to solve the mysteries buried in the natural world and provide vital information for marine improvements. In addition to illuminating the complexities of these bio-inspired mechanisms, the investigation helps to steer future research directions and possible obstacles, spurring additional advancements in the field of biomimetic marine robotics. Considering the revolutionary potential of using nature's inventiveness to navigate and thrive in one of the most challenging environments on Earth, the conclusion of the current review urges a multidisciplinary approach by integrating robotics and biology. Abstract:Advanced underwater soft robots are crucial. This article first introduces the development trend and research status of underwater soft robots, and reviews the general underwater wireless communication methods. Works about biomimetic underwater soft robots are summarized. Detailed information on intelligent soft materials, fabrication, actuation, locomotion patterns, power storage, sensing, control, and modeling is provided. Challenges and outlooks are discussed. The ocean environment has enormous uncertainty due to the influence of complex waves and undercurrents. The human beings are limited in their abilities to detect and utilize marine resources without powerful tools. Soft robots employ soft materials to simplify the complex mechanical structures in rigid robots and adapt their morphology to the environment, making them suitable for performing some challenging tasks in place of manual labor. Due to superior flexible and deformable bodies, underwater soft robots have played significant roles in numerous applications in recent decades. Meanwhile, various technical challenges still need to be tackled to ensure the reliability and practical performance of underwater soft robots in complicated ocean environment. Nowadays, some researchers have developed underwater soft robotic systems based on biomimetics and other disciplines, aiming at comprehensive exploration of ocean and appropriate utilization of unexploited resources. This review presents the recent advances of underwater soft robots in the aspects of intelligent soft materials, fabrication, actuation, locomotion patterns, power storage, sensing, control, and modeling; additionally, the existing challenges and perspectives are analyzed as well.

Abstract:The early promise of the impact of machine intelligence did not involve the partitioning of the nascent field of Artificial Intelligence. The founders of AI envisioned the notion of embedded intelligence as being conjoined between perception, reasoning and actuation. Yet over the years the fields of AI and Robotics drifted apart. Practitioners of AI focused on problems and algorithms abstracted from the real world. Roboticists, generally with a background in mechanical and electrical engineering, concentrated on sensori-motor functions. That divergence is slowly being bridged with the maturity of both fields and with the growing interest in autonomous systems. This special issue brings together the state of the art and practice of the emergent field of integrated AI and Robotics, and highlights the key areas along which this current evolution of machine intelligence is heading.

Abstract:The ocean covers about two-thirds of the earth and has a great effect on the future existence of all human beings. About 37% of the world’s population lives within 100 km of the ocean. The ocean is generally overlooked as we focus our attention on land and atmospheric issues; we have not been able to explore the full depths of the ocean and its abundant living and non-living resources. For example, it is estimated that there are about 2,000 billion tons of manganese nodules on the floor of the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands. We discovered, by using manned submersibles, that a large amount of carbon dioxide comes from the seafloor and extraordinary groups of organisms live in hydrothermal vent areas. Marine robots including unmanned surface vehicles and unmanned underwater vehicles can help us better understand marine and other environmental issues, protect the ocean resources of the earth from pollution, and efficiently utilize them for human welfare. This paper briefly presents some exemplary models of recent developments in marine robots in different application areas.

Patterns of Bovine Dairy Submissions to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System

Abstract:Dairy cattle submissions to the California Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System (CVDLS) were analyzed to determine submitter statistics. Eligible submissions were those received July 1, 1987 through December 31, 1989 for reasons other than regulatory brucellosis serology. A comprehensive list frame of California dairies was constructed from Brucella Ring Test information and served as the comparison population for the study. Analyses were performed based on geographic location, herd size, proximity to a CVDLS laboratory, and frequency of submission. Thirty-nine percent of the 2,490 California dairies in the reference population had submitted specimens 21 time to the CVDLS during the study period. Twenty-three percent of the reference population had submitted 22 times. Specimens were more likely to be submitted from larger herds than smaller herds. Larger dairies also submitted specimens more frequently. Dairies in the northern part of the state were more likely to submit specimens and submitted more frequently than southern herds when herd size was accounted for in the analysis. Mean submission rate (&SD) for the 970 submitting dairies was 1.4 (± 1.8) submissions/year. Forty-six percent of the dairies accounted for 80% of submissions, whereas only 14% of dairies accounted for 50% of all diagnostic dairy submissions.

Abstract:Ocean observation is the basis for understanding and studying marine science. In recent years, the application of autonomous ships (AS), including Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), in ocean observation has gained significant traction due to their capability to perform maritime autonomous tasks of oceans efficiently and safely in challenging marine environments.Compared with traditional technical means, the unique technical capability of ASs in marine environment observation is the ability to maneuver on demand under the influence of complex marine environments. Therefore, giving full play to its controllable maneuverability and realizing its perception, task decision-making, path planning, control, and perception data analysis is the key to its application. Equipped with advanced sensors and instruments, these vessels can gather critical ocean data over large areas and long durations, providing invaluable insights for marine scientists.This editorial aims to highlight the latest advancements in AS technology and their implications for ocean science, particularly the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). These innovations have the potential to greatly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of ocean observation, transforming the field of marine science.This Research Topic comprises eleven high-quality papers, each contributing to many different aspects of autonomous ships (AS) for ocean observation. In the realm of enhanced data with spatial information from port facilities, they created semantic connections among ships, berths, and waterways. This approach enhances ship identification and berth allocation, improving decision-making for intelligent maritime systems.In summary, these collective efforts underscore a comprehensive approach to advancing maritime research and technology. By leveraging the capabilities of Autonomous Ships (ASs) and integrating sophisticated modeling, autonomous systems, image processing, and data analysis techniques, researchers are addressing complex challenges in marine science. These advancements not only enhance our ability to monitor and understand marine environments more effectively but also improve the efficiency and safety of oceanographic research. Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) for smart ocean is a promising paradigm that will support emerging applications in the areas of maritime transport, emergency search and rescue, security and border surveillance, environmental protection, etc. There has been a surging amount of data acquired from different maritime terminals, such as vessels, buoys, and offshore platforms. As a result, the demand for high-speed, ultrareliable, and low-latency maritime communications and data processing is proliferating. In this context, transmission and processing of maritime data have become a research hotspot. IoT technologies are expected to dramatically enhance the capacity, safety, and efficiency of connected vessels and other maritime terminals. Meanwhile, the unique characteristics of smart ocean applications create heterogeneous challenges in achieving viable, reliable, and secure communications and data processing. Addressing the challenges calls for novel approaches and consideration for the deployment of next-generation maritime communication networks. Therefore, it is essential to pursue research on new theories, architecture, and technologies to fully exploit the capability that is delivered by IoT for smart ocean to form efficient and intelligent maritime communication systems. This special issue aims to create a platform for researchers from both academia and industry to disseminate state-of-the-art results and to advance the applications of IoT for the smart ocean.
