Abstract:Ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials, with complex perovskite structures, have experienced wide interest due to their peculiar structure and properties. In this highlight, recent advances of these two types of materials are reviewed, with particular emphasis on piezoelectrics/ferroelectric and antiferroelectric single crystals, owing to their ultra-high electric properties for practical application. Relaxor ferroelectric single crystals, represented by Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) at compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), possess a high piezoelectric constant d(33) (>2000 pC N-1) and electromechanical coupling factors k(33) (90-92%). However, a low ferroelectric phase transition temperature Tr-t, far below the Curie temperature T-c restricts its further application in a broad temperature range. Some work on the design of a new pseudo-ternary system of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbZrO3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PZ-PT) and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PFN-PT) have been demonstrated with emphasis on the composition modification and crystal growth. Moreover, for relaxor antiferroelectrics represented by (Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O-3 (PLZST) it is very difficult to grow bulk and high quality single crystals because of its incongruent melting. Our recent investigations on the flux growth of PLZST single crystals, especially the flux selection, compositions optimization, and defect analysis of as-grown single crystals are also described in this highlight.

Abstract:The year of 2021 is the 100th anniversary of the first publication of ferroelectric behaviour in Rochelle salt, focussing on its piezoelectric properties. Over the past many decades, people witnessed a great impact of ferroelectricity on our everyday life, where numerous ferroelectric materials have been designed and developed to enable the advancement of diverse applications. Now the driving forces for ferroelectric studies stem from regulations on environment, human health and sustainable society development. This leads to the resurgence of lead-free ferroelectric materials for the expectation of replacing the state-of-the-art lead-based counterparts. The next wave of explorations into ferroelectric materials maybe related to the Internet-of-Things, which requires millions of self-powered sensors and memories. This will promote research on ferroelectrics for sensing, energy harvesting and storage, communication and non-volatile memories, from centimetre scale to micro and nanoscale. This review gives a brief discussion from the materials viewpoint, on the challenges and current status of lead-free ferroelectrics based on prospective applications.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:The quest for new 2D ferroelectric materials continues to arouse interest. Based on first-principles calculations, here, 2D ferroelectric properties in lead chalcogenides PbXs (X = S, Se, and Te) with a thickness of two atomic layers via strain engineering is demonstrated. Although these materials are stable in a rocksalt-type cubic structure and are intrinsically nonferroelectric materials, an appropriate mechanical strain can readily activate a paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transition and induce in-plane electric polarization in these atomic layers. The induced polarization magnitude can be as large as 1.90 x 10(-10) C m(-1) at a biaxial strain of epsilon = 4.0%, which is comparable in magnitude to that of ultrathin ferroelectric SnTe. The Curie temperature T-c of the materials is also estimated using effective Hamiltonian simulations. The origin of the emerged ferroelectric phase is attributed to softening of the polar mode with applied strain. In addition, the band gaps of the crystals are found to be tunable with applied strain, which can be adjusted to the ideal value of 1.3 eV for photovoltaic applications. The results not only provide a new route to explore ferroelectricity in 2D materials but also suggest promising semiconducting ferroelectrics for solar applications.

Abstract:Perovskite ferroelectrics (PFs) have been the dominant piezoelectric materials for various electromechanical applications, such as ultrasonic transducers, sensors, and actuators, to name a few. In this review article, the development of PF crystals is introduced, focusing on the crystal growth and piezoelectric activity. The critical factors responsible for the high piezoelectric activity of PFs (i.e., phase transition, monoclinic phase, domain size, relaxor component, dopants, and piezoelectric anisotropy) are surveyed and discussed. A general picture of the present understanding on the high piezoelectricity of PFs is described. At the end of this review, potential approaches to further improve the piezoelectricity of PFs are proposed.

Abstract:Compared to Pb(Zr(1-x)Tix)O-3 (PZT) polycrystalline ceramics, relaxor-PT single crystals offer significantly improved performance with extremely high electromechanical coupling and piezoelectric coefficients, making them promising materials for piezoelectric transducers, sensors and actuators. The recent advances in crystal growth and characterization of relaxor-PT-based ferroelectric single crystals are reviewed in this paper with emphases on the following topics: (1) the large crystal growth of binary and ternary relaxor-PT-based ferroelectric crystals for commercialization; (2) the composition segregation in the crystals grown from such a solid-solution system and possible solutions to reduce it; (3) the crystal growth from new binary and ternary compositions to expand the operating temperature and electric field; (4) the crystallographic orientation dependence and anisotropic behaviors of relaxor-PT-based ferroelectriccrystals; and (5) the characterization of the dielectric, elastic and piezoelectric properties of the relaxor-PT-based ferroelectriccrystals under small and large electric fields.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials are essential parts of the electronics and electrical equipment used for consumer and industrial applications, such as ultrasonic piezoelectric transducers, sensors, actuators, transformers, and resonators. In this review, the development of piezoelectric materials and the figures of merit for various electromechanical applications are surveyed, focusing on piezoelectric crystals, i.e., the high-performance relaxor-PbTiO3-based perovskite ferroelectric crystals and nonferroelectric high-temperature piezoelectric crystals. The uniqueness of these crystals is discussed with respect to different usages. Finally, the existing challenges and perspective for the piezoelectric crystals are discussed, with an emphasis on the temperature-dependent properties, from cryogenic temperatures up to the ultrahigh-temperature usage range.

Abstract:Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics (LFPC) have attracted an increasing attention along with the economic development and human environmental consciousness improvement. But,compared with properties of lead piezoelectric ceramics (LPC),poor properties of LFPC restrict its applications seriously. Nevertheless,the appearance and development of nanotechnology offer a good platform to make properties of LFPC reach and even exceed those of LPC. In this paper,the recent progress in nano-powder fabrication of LFPC is reviewed. The properties between LFPC based on nano-powders and LFPC based on ordinary raw material are compared. Finally,the future prospect on the development and applications of LFPC based on nano-powders is proposed. The uniform nano-powders with controllable sizes and shapes can be acquired by varying reaction parameters,using which the performance of LFPC will be enhanced greatly.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ceramics is a functional material which can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. It can find wide applications ranging from our daily life to high?tech techniques and dominates a billion?dollar market. For half a century, the working horse of the field is the polycrystalline PbZr1-xTixO3(PZT), which is now globally resisted for containing the toxic element lead. Thus, the research of lead-free piezoelectric ceramic with high performance has been a hot topic all over the world. It is believed that the morphotropic phase boundary ( MPB) in phase diagram is the key to a?chieve high piezoelectric performance; great efforts have been made to build the MPB in lead?free system and reveal the physical nature of MPB. In the present paper, we review the recent progress, both on the experimental and theoretical, of the most promising lead?free ceramic systems, i?e? BaTiO3 , ( KNa) NbO3 and ( BiNa) TiO3 systems.

Abstract:Since industry‐standard piezoelectric materials, such as lead zirconium titanate ceramics, contain toxic lead, a rapid surge in research on lead‐free piezoelectric materials is occurring due to concerns over environmental safety and human health. A ternary lead‐free (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3‐BaTiO3‐(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 single crystal with a large field induced strain of ≈0.9% and a giant piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 840 pC N−1 at room temperature is reported. It is revealed that the electric‐field‐induced phase transition and phase boundary between energetically comparable polar states (i.e., R3c and P4mm) play an important role in achieving the ultrahigh piezoelectricity. Transmission electron microscopy and scan probe microscopy are employed to verify the weak‐polar ferroelectric R3c and P4bm structure in the ground state. These unprecedentedly high piezoelectric properties make lead‐free ternary single crystals a leading candidate for piezoelectric‐based device applications, especially toward the era of smart homes and implantable medical devices.

Abstract:Relaxor ferroelectric (1−x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3 (PZNT) solid solution crystal exhibits superior piezoelectric properties near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), but applications of PZNT crystals are limited by the lack of a simple and reproducible growth technique. In this paper, 0.93Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.07PbTiO3 (PZNT93/7) piezocrystal had been grown by directional solidification with PbO flux. The growth furnace was designed and large size PZNT boule of 40mm in diameter was obtained. The growth defects, such as striations and inclusions, were observed and the compositions of as-grown PZNT crystals were analyzed.

Abstract:The field of lead-free piezoceramics, which aims to replace lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and related perovskite materials, has been vibrant for almost 15 years. Once the science in this field attained a certain stage of maturity, materials with properties better than PZT have appeared, and the first products are about to reach the marketplace. This article describes the three most promising lead-free piezoceramics currently under discussion to replace PZT. Each has a pronounced property profile geared for specific applications. Guidelines for directions for fundamental future research on as well as technology transfer to industry of lead-free piezoceramics are provided.

Abstract:Lead-free piezoelectric materials with excellent performance are greatly demanded for the environmental issues. The lead-free ferroelectric single crystals are therefore greatly concerned for their much higher piezoelectricity than the polycrystalline counterparts and the domain-tunable property. However, the growth of large size and high-quality lead-free ferroelectric crystals has always been a great challenge. In this work, a ferroelectric KTa1-xNbxO3 (KTN) single crystal with an extremely large size of 25 x 25 x 37 mm(3) was grown using the modified top-seeded solution growth method. The large size enabled us to carry out comprehensive investigations on the crystal. The complete sets of dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic constants for the [001](C)-poled KTN crystal with quasi single domain state were determined. Results showed that the crystal exhibits high electromechanical coupling coefficients with k(t)similar to 0.642 and k(33)similar to 0.679. Furthermore, the orientation dependence of the piezoelectric, dielectric, and elastic properties was determined by the tensor matrix transformation technique, and the maximum d(33), s33E, and k(33) were found along the polar direction [001](C). This work not only provides important guidance for the growth technology of lead-free ferroelectric crystals but also offers essential datasets of lead-free alkali niobate system, which is of great importance for both theoretical studies and designs of electromechanical devices.

Abstract:Ferroelectrics are essential components in a wide range of applications, including ultrasonic transducers, sensors, and actuators. In the single crystal form, relaxor-PbTiO3 (PT) piezoelectric materials have been extensively studied due to their ultrahigh piezoelectric and electromechanical properties. In this article, a perspective and future development of relaxor-PT crystals are given. Initially, various techniques for the growth of relaxor-PT crystals are reviewed, with crystals up to 100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length being readily achievable using the Bridgman technique. Second, the characterizations of dielectric and electromechanical properties are surveyed. Boundary conditions, including temperature, electric field, and stress, are discussed in relation to device limitations. Third, the physical origins of the high piezoelectric properties and unique loss characteristics in relaxor-PT crystals are discussed with respect to their crystal structure, phase, engineered domain configuration, macrosymmetry, and domain size. Finally, relaxor-PT single crystals are reviewed with respect to specific applications and contrasted to conventional piezoelectric ceramics. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Research on lead-free piezoceramics has dramatically increased over the last years due to stringent legislation demanding to phase out current lead-containing piezoceramics. The use of electrostrictive materials for electric-field induced strain has been largely overlooked. in this paper we demonstrate that electrostrictive materials around a ferroelectric-antiferroelectric transition are capable of providing high strains over a wide temperature regime that was not accessible before.

Abstract:The studies of superlattices in ferroelectric crystals have made a rapid progress since 1980s. A superlattice is composed of modulated domains on the micron scale, controllable with modern techniques. It reveals a number of novel physical properties of optical and acoustic character. In this paper, we review recent advances in developing new techniques for fabrication and characterization of ferroelectric superlattices, and in exploring new physical effects for applications. The outlook for superlattice applications is briefly described.

Abstract:Lead-free electroceramics represent an emerging area of research that has the potential to enable new green advances in electronics. Research has mainly focused on the development of new piezoelectric materials for replacing lead containing oxides exhibiting superior electromechanical behavior. Lead-free BiFeO3-based materials are not only the promising candidates to replace lead-based materials but also show intriguing properties which may inspire innovative material design for the next generation of lead-free piezoceramics. This review aims to highlight the current state of research and overlooked aspects in lead-free BiFeO3-based ceramics, which could be insightful in elucidating certain controversial issues. Current strategies to reduce high conductivity, influence of chemical heterogeneity on both functional properties and crystal structure, effective heat treatment procedures, and the role of pseudo-cubic structures on the enhancement of piezoelectric properties are subjects of highlighted within this review as they have a significant impact on the quality of BiFeO3-based lead-free piezoelectrics (but are often disregarded).
