Abstract:This work focuses on a comprehensive investigation of three types of lignocellulosic biochar for post-combustion carbon capture technology, i.e., bamboo charcoal biochar, wood pellet biochar, and coconut shell biochar. Each biochar is structurally enhanced through physical (H2O, CO2) and chemical (ZnCl2, KOH, H3PO4) activation, thus making the biochar more conducive to adsorption carbon capture. Three methods (CO2 adsorption isotherms, CO2 fixed-bed adsorption, and thermogravimetric analysis) are used to determine CO2 adsorption capacity, in which the capacity of biochar samples was more significant than 2.35 mmolÂ·g-1 (1 bar, 298K). The results showed that the efficiency of CO2 capture by lignocellulosic biochar not only depends on the single nature of the microporous structure but also has a positive correlation with biochar textural properties (surface area and pore volume). Furthermore, the O*/C ratio and pore width show a negative correlation with the CO2 capture capacity of biochars. Therefore, the comprehensive analysis of CO2 adsorption properties of different biochar under various activation conditions provides the direction for selecting biochar activation methods and accurately achieving biochar pore generation.

Abstract:Nano biochar, a carbon-rich material, is increasingly recognized for its pivotal role in sustainable agriculture and environmental management. It is produced through the pyrolysis of biomass under controlled conditions, converting organic matter into a stable form of carbon. This process effectively sequesters carbon and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions while yielding a valuable soil amendment. In agriculture, biochar offers multifaceted benefits. Its porous structure enhances soil fertility and water retention, fostering optimal conditions for plant growth. By serving as a reservoir for nutrients, biochar promotes their slow release, reducing the risk of leaching and nutrient runoff. Moreover, its neutral pH and high organic carbon content contribute to soil health and microbial activity. Some key features of nano biochar are enhancing surface area and porosity, improved soil fertility, nutrient retention and recycling, slow-release fertilizer, enhanced microbial population, carbon sequestration etc. Furthermore, biochar aids in waste management by utilizing agricultural residues as feedstock. However, despite its promising advantages, biochar application requires careful consideration. Variations in feedstock and production methods can influence its efficacy and environmental impact. Moreover, its long-term effects on soil health and crop productivity warrant further research and field trials. It presents a sustainable solution for enhancing agricultural productivity, mitigating climate change, and managing organic waste. However, its optimal utilization necessitates comprehensive understanding, integrated management practices, and ongoing scientific inquiry.

With its small particle size, large specific surface area, abundant functional groups and tunable pore structure, nano-biochar stands out due to its distinct physical and chemical properties compared to conventional biochar. This paper aims to provide an in-depth exploration of nano-biochar, covering its sources, transformation mechanisms, properties, applications, and areas requiring further research. The discussion begins with an overview of biomass sources for nano-biochar production and the conversion processes involved. Subsequently, primary synthesis methods and strategies for functionalization enhancement are examined. Furthermore, the applications of nano-biochar in catalysis, energy storage, and pollutant adsorption and degradation are explored and enhanced in various fields.

Abstract:Biochar is a carbonaceous by-product of lignocellulosic biomass developed by various thermochemical processes. Biochar can be transformed into "nano-biochar" by size reduction to nano-meters level. Nano-biochar presents remarkable physico-chemical behavior in comparison to macro-biochar including; higher stability, unique nanostructure, higher catalytic ability, larger specific surface area, higher porosity, improved surface functionality, and surface active sites. Nano-biochar efficiently regulates the transport and absorption of vital micro-and macro-nutrients, in addition to toxic contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, antibiotics). However an extensive understanding of the recent nano-biochar studies is essential for large scale implementations, including development, physico-chemical properties and targeted use. Nano-biochar toxicity on different organisms and its in-direct effect on humans is an important issue of concern and needs to be extensively evaluated for large scale applications. This review provides a detailed insight on nanobiochar research for (1) development methodologies, (2) compositions and properties, (3) characterization methods, (4) potentiality as emerging sorbent, photocatalyst, enzyme carrier for environmental application, and (5) environmental concerns.

Abstract:<span>Biochar is produced as a charred material with high surface area and abundant functional groups by pyrolysis, which refers to the process of thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen. The carbon component in biochar is relatively stable, and, hence, biochar was originally proposed as a soil amendment to store carbon in the soil. Biochar has multifunctional values that include the use of it for the following purposes: soil amendment to improve soil health, nutrient and microbial carrier, immobilising agent for remediation of toxic metals and organic contaminants in soil and water, catalyst for industrial applications, porous material for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and odorous compounds, and feed supplement to improve animal health and nutrient intake efficiency and, thus, productivity. This article provides for the first time an overview of the multifunctional values and unintended consequences of biochar applications.</span>

Abstract:Biochar is a carbonaceous material that can be amplified into nano-biochar (N-BC) using different physicochemical techniques. Contrary to bulk biochar, nano-biochar, and have better physicochemical characteristics, including a large specific surface area, pore properties, distinctive nanostructure, and high catalytic activity. The spotlight of this review is to contribute up-to-date information on the scaling up of biochar into nano-biochar through various sustainable techniques. This review paper is a compilation of research on nano-biochar from biochar including preparation, distinctive characteristics, and intended applications in the environmental and agricultural sectors, along with some other cutting-edge applications, which are all covered in detail in this review paper and also provides the knowledge gap that will be useful for future investigation and development.

Abstract:Biochar is an extremely valuable carbon black material used since the Pre‐Columbian Era and is known for its properties to promote soil fertility and sustain crop production. Modern civilization has followed the footsteps of ancient civilizations and has prepared nano‐sized biochar (nano‐BC). The synthesis of nano‐BC can be achieved using different feedstock materials via pyrolysis, yielding bulk‐BCs which are mechanical transformed into the nano‐BCs, the final value‐added product. This review provides insights into structural, functional, and elemental properties concerning synthesis, surface properties including functional groups, and carbon stability. Moreover, the prospects of improving soil physicochemical properties including CEC, nutrient availability, soil water retention, and buffering capacity are discussed with agricultural implications. Mechanistic insights have been provided regarding how nano‐BC can improve soil health and could promote plant growth and physio‐biochemical properties, which further pave the way for its application to improve plant resilience to abiotic stress factors. Lastly, limited studies have been conducted that elucidate potential negative effects including contaminant mobilization and residual effects and these are also critically discussed. Above all, nano‐BC could be used as a beneficial soil amendment to boost crop production and enhance soil fertilities.

Abstract:Currently, the applications of biochar (BC) in agricultural practices and for environmental remediation purposes have demonstrated multifaceted advantages despite a few limitations. Nano-BC offers considerable opportunities especially for the remediation of hazardous contaminants as well as the improvement of crop productivity. Positive outcomes of nano-BC on soil physico-chemical and biological characteristics have indicated its suitability for agricultural applications. Nano-BC may effectively regulate the mobilization and sorption of important micro- and macro-nutrients, along with the hazardous contaminants including potentially toxic metals, pesticides, etc. Additionally, the sorption characteristics of nano-BC depends substantially on feedstock materials and pyrolysis temperatures. Nevertheless, the conducted investigations regarding nano-BC are in infant stages, requiring extensive field investigations. The nano-enhanced properties of BC on one hand dramatically improve its effectiveness and sustainability, on the other hand, there may be associated with toxicity development in diverse aquatic and/or terrestrial environments. Therefore, risk assessment on soil organisms and its indirect impact on human health is another area of concern linked with the field application of nano-BC. The present review delineates the potentiality of nano-BC as an emerging sorbent for sustainable agriculture and environmental applications.

Abstract:Given the increase in global threats to the environment and the growth in energy demand, there is great interest in developing renewable and green biochar-based materials. This article investigated ball-milled cellulosic biochar-based composites incorporating minerals (montmorillonite, calcite, or quartz) synthesized by an in situ carbon-bed pyrolysis method. The synthesized samples were examined using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), Raman spectroscopy, and organic dyes adsorption analysis. It was shown that the mineral components incorporated during ball-milling modified the microstructure, morphology, and surface properties of biochar composites. Synergistic effects of oxygen functional groups and mesoporous layered structure contributed to the functionalization and surface modification of biochar-based montmorillonite composites, as reflected by a remarkably enhanced adsorption performance of organic dyes. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were found to provide an accurate description of the chemical adsorption of MB onto the heterogeneous surface of the biochar-based montmorillonite composite via cation exchange.

Abstract:This study investigated the characteristics of nanoscale bamboo charcoal (NBC), and made a comparison with microscale bamboo charcoal (MBC) on how they impact on the sorption abilities of different soils. The two charcoals contained similar elemental contents (e.g., high C, low H and low N) and various functional groups on their surfaces (e.g., aromatic structure, carboxyl, and hydroxyl). However, NBC had a larger total pore volume than that of MBC and was more likely to generate multi-layer sorption of phenanthrene. Controlled by van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces, NBC formed meso-and macropores (intra-particle porosity) and a more intricate pore structure. The performance of NBC in aqueous and soil-water systems was conspicuous and impressing. In aqueous system, by virtue of its larger pore volume, surface area and nonprotonated aromatic carbon, the Kd (sorption coefficient) of NBC reached up to 1.24×106, almost 10 times higher than that of MBC. In soil-water systems, although it could aggregate and react with compounds in soil, the performance of NBC was not weakened by the complicated soil properties, and was still more capable of phenanthrene sorption than MBC, even at an extremely low addition rate 0.2% in soils. Additionally, in comparison with some other common biochars, NBC still showed a promising capacity for phenanthrene sorption in two systems. This finding increases our knowledge of NBC for the remediation of organic pollutants in soil and indicates that the addition rate of charcoals in soils could be reduced by lessening the particle size. Therefore, NBC provides a new possibility for soil pollutant remediation and deserves further research.

Abstract:Nano-biochar presents superior physicochemical properties over bulk biochar such as highly stable and unique nanostructure, high catalytic activity and large specific surface area. A comprehensive understanding of the current nano-biochar research is required while progressing to real-world implementations, including preparation, characteristic properties and targeted applications. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on nano-biochar research for (1) definition and production methodologies, (2) compositions and properties, (3) high-value applications and performances, (4) environmental concerns, and (5) implications to conventional biorefineries and perspectives. Following a sequence of biochar preparation, size reduction and screening, nano-biochar can be obtained for high-value applications such as a high-performance adsorbent, a carrier of biocatalysts, electrodes in electrochemistry and additives. Compared with bulk biochar, nano-biochar performs better in general uses such as wastewater treatment and soil amendment and promises high-value applications in emerging areas such as electrochemistry and biocatalysis. This review highlights that the preparation of nano-biochar from conventional bioenergy and biorefinery technologies such as thermochemical liquefaction and gasification is promising to generate adding values, contributing to enhanced techno-economic feasibility. Integrating nano-biochar preparation and application with conventional biofuel production is thus highly recommended as a future research endeavour.

Abstract:Biochar (BC), a carbon‐dense substance created through the pyrolysis of organic biomass, has garnered considerable interest as a promising option for sustainable mitigation methods. A comprehensive examination of the diverse attributes of BC and its implications for addressing contemporary environmental issues while fostering sustainable practices is compiled in this review. The synthesis techniques and structural attributes of BC are scrutinized initially, emphasizing its remarkable features such as broad surface area, porosity, and active sites. These characteristics of BC are conducive to myriad environmental applications, including pollutant remediation, soil health enhancement, and carbon sequestration. Subsequently, this review delves into the mechanisms underlying BC's effectiveness in environmental remediation. BC exhibits augmented adsorption capacities, catalytic functionalities, and interactions with microorganisms, facilitating the removal of contaminants from different matrices of the environment. Recently, BC and their products such as nano‐BC have gained widespread recognition as a feasible option for sustainable carbon material. Fabrication, characterization, modification, and diverse applications of BC were also discussed in detail. Its integration into agriculture holds promise for enhancing soil organic matter, augmenting production, and mitigating gas emissions, thereby contributing to food security and climate change mitigation. In conclusion, BC and nano‐BC emerge as a promising avenue for addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable development objectives. However, further research is warranted to optimize synthesis methodologies, elucidate long‐term environmental implications, and facilitate scalable production for widespread adoption.

Abstract:Biofuels and biomaterials are gaining increased attention because of their ecofriendly nature and renewable precursors. Biochar is a recalcitrant carbonaceous product obtained from pyrolysis of biomass and other biogenic wastes. Biochar has found many notable applications in diverse areas because of its versatile physicochemical properties. Some of the promising biochar applications discussed in this paper include char gasification and combustion for energy production, soil remediation, carbon sequestration, catalysis, as well as development of activated carbon and specialty materials with biomedical and industrial uses. The pyrolysis temperature and heating rates are the limiting factors that determine the biochar properties such as fixed carbon, volatile matter, mineral phases, surface area, porosity and pore size distribution, alkalinity, electrical conductivity, cation-exchange capacity, etc. A broad investigation of these properties determining biochar application is rare in literature. With this objective, this paper comprehensively reviews the evolution of biochar from several lignocellulosic biomasses influenced by pyrolysis temperature and heating rate. Lower pyrolysis temperatures produce biochar with higher yields, and greater levels of volatiles, electrical conductivity and cation-exchange capacity. Conversely, higher temperatures generate biochar with a greater extent of aromatic carbon, alkalinity and surface area with microporosity. Nevertheless, this coherent review summarizes the valorization potentials of biochar for various environmental, industrial and biomedical applications.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Biochar, a by-product of biomass pyrolysis, has been suggested as a mean to combat climate change, and at the same time to achieve agricultural and environmental benefits. As one possible source of the components with high aromatic structure in soil humus, biochar is of great importance in increasing soil carbon storage and improving soil nutrient retention and nutrient availability, and in maintaining the balance of soil ecosystem. This paper briefly reviewed and synthesized recent findings and discussions regarding the production and characteristics of biochar, its effects on global climate change and particularly in relation to the environmental effects of biochar in soils. Agronomic benefits of biochar application are critically highlighted because researches show that biochar had varied effects on crop productivity thorough the different bio-physical interactions between the biochar and the soils, which are deserved for further investigations. Potential pitfalls and knowledge gaps were briefly discussed on the environmental behavior and the effects of biochar in agricultural ecosystem.

Abstract:Although research on biochar has received increasing attention for environmental and agricultural applications, the significance of nanobiochar for environmental pollutant remediation is poorly understood. In contrast to bulk biochar, nanobiochar has superior physicochemical properties such as high catalytic activity, unique nanostructure, large specific surface area and high mobility in the soil environment. These unique characteristics make nanobiochar an ideal candidate for pollution remediation. Thus far, the research on nanobiochar is still in its infancy and most of the previous studies have only been conducted for exploring its properties and environmental functions. The lack of in-depth summary of nanobiochar's research direction makes it a challenge for scientists and researchers globally. Hence in this review, we established some key fabrication methods for nanobiochar with a focus on its performance for the removal of pollutants from the environment. We also provided up-to-date information on nanobiochar's role in environmental remediation and insights into different mechanisms involved in the pollutant removal. Although, nanobiochar application is increasing, the associated drawbacks to the soil ecosystem have not received enough research attention. Therefore, further research is warranted to evaluate the potential environmental risks of nanobiochar before large scale application.

Abstract:This study presents the synthesis and characterization of coconut biochar (CBA1), groundnut biochar (GBA1), and coconut biochar/CuO–NiO (CBA1/CuO–NiO) and groundnut biochar/CuO–NiO (GBA1/CuO–NiO) nanocomposites (NCs) designed for morphology and size-dependent applications in environmental remediation. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of crystalline cubic and monoclinic structures. At the same time, SEM and TEM images revealed rough, macro-porous, and layered sheet structures with particle sizes ranging from 9 to 80 nm. Notably, the CBA1/CuO–NiO NCs exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity, decomposing 95.15% of 10 ppm methylene blue dye solution. Antibacterial assessments demonstrated efficacy against B. subtilis, S. aureus , and E. coli . These findings underscore the crucial role of morphology in determining the diverse properties of the NCs. Moreover, the CBA1/CuO–NiO NCs displayed improved efficacy compared to previous iterations, highlighting their potential for environmental applications. Future research directions should prioritize scaling up synthesis, enhancing stability, and evaluating environmental implications. This study contributes significant insights into the development of sustainable NCs for environmental remediation, offering promising avenues for addressing environmental challenges.

Abstract:Biochar derived from biomass conversion has gained widespread use in environmental applications due to its cost-effectiveness, environmental benefits, and potential for carbon neutralization. However, due to restricted pore structure and limited surface-active sites of virgin biochar, modification is usually required to improve its performance. But these modifications can increase the costs associated with pretreatment processing for biochar utilization. Algae biomass (such as algae and microalgae) is characterized by its diverse varieties, rapid propagation rate, and excellent stability, making it a highly suitable raw material for adsorbents. Nitrogen doping is one of the most commonly used methods to enhance the catalytic performance of biochar materials. The utilization of algal biomass as a foundational material, in combination with nitrogen doping, has demonstrated superior catalytic performance surpassing that of virgin biochar. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the research progress on algal biomass, analyzing the pyrolysis mechanism of algal biomass and the advantages and limitations of several methods for preparing nitrogen-doped biochar. Furthermore, we explore the practical applications of nitrogen-doped biochar in catalysis, pollutant adsorption, and supercapacitors, offering valuable insights for the ongoing development of algal nitrogen-doped biochar.

Abstract:Biochar, an organic, porous, and carbon-rich material originating from biomass via pyrolysis, showcases compelling attributes and intrinsic performances. Its appeal as a reinforcement material for biocomposites, as well as its auspicious electrical properties, has gained more attention, and makes biochar a versatile candidate for applications ranging from energy storage to catalytic devices. This scientific review undertakes a comprehensive exploration of biochar, spanning production methodologies, physicochemical intricacies, and critical process parameters. The focus of this paper extends to optimization strategies for biochar properties tailored to specific applications, with a dedicated inquiry into diverse production methods and activation strategies. This review’s second phase delves into a meticulous analysis of key properties within biochar-based composites, emphasizing limitations and unique performance characteristics crucial for diverse applications. By synthesizing a substantial body of research, this review aims to catalyze future investigations by pinpointing areas that demand attention in upcoming experiments, ultimately emphasizing the profound potential of biochar-based materials across technical and scientific domains.

Abstract:Biochar refers to the black carbon that is produced by the process of slow pyrolysis and act as a vehicle of carbon sequestration from renewable and sustainable biomass. This review describes the ability of biochar to improve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil and thus increase crop yield and productivity. Benefits of application of biochar also includes lowering of bulk density, improving porosity, aggregation, water infiltration and water holding capacity of soils. It also darkens the soil colour which affects soil surface reflectance and thus helps to moderate soil temperature. Biochar addition enhances cation exchange capacity, increases soil pH, improves the supply and uptake of nutrients, reduces nutrient leaching losses, captures NH3 and leads to reduction in volatilization loss of nitrogen thus improving nutrient availability in soils. Application of biochar can also remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants. It can also facilitate microbial colonisation in soil, enhance soil microbial biomass carbon, enzyme activity and the activity of mycorrhizal fungi.
