Abstract:Seismic records during energetic storms, similar to earthquake signals, carry information about the Earth's interior. However, the utility of these records is rare in seismic imaging, because signal onsets in storm-generated microseisms are difficult to pick. The exciting seismic sources are also unsteady. Here, we present a new method for extracting accurate Rayleigh-wave dispersion curves from broadband seismic recordings made during the pas- sage of hurricanes by incorporating Shen et al. (2012) cross-correlation strategy with Wang et al. (2019) frequency-Bessel transform array stacking technique. We show that surface wave dispersion curves are observed in the seismic recordings made of four hurricanes. Compared with dispersion curves from hurricanes traveling onshore or in the deepwater, dispersion curves have higher signal-to-noise ratios from hurricanes moving near the coast or along the continental shelf. The average dispersion curve obtained from stacked cross correlations of all the four hurricanes agrees closely with that obtained from yearly ambient noise. We utilize the average dispersion curve from hurricanes to obtain a reliable shear-wave velocity (V-s) model. Our V-s model matches that derived from annual ambient seismic noise results with an average difference less than 0.1 km/s in the crust and uppermost mantle. This study suggests that hurricane-based dispersion curves can be an effective supplement to surface-wave tomography.

Abstract:Extracting Empirical Green's Functions (EGFs) by cross-correlating ambient seismic noise or coda, considered as an efficient approach of retrieving new response inside the media of two receivers, has been developed well in the past two decades. However, EGFs emerge with high Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs), which needs us to stack a large number of cross-correlations. Here, we retrieve EGFs with high SNRs from ambient seismic noise released by hurricane Dorian moving along the eastern coast of the United States during 3 days in Sept 2019. We systematically analyze the energy sources of seismic noise records with time-frequency analysis and beam-forming. We find that the energy exhibits very strongly when hurricane Dorian progresses along the coast from 4th to 6th Sept. Our results suggest that EGFs exhibit strong directionality and only emerge in the negative part of cross-correlation time functions due to the noise sources of Dorian. We extract clear multimodal dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves from retrieved EGFs. Our results, indeed, reveal that multimodal dispersion curves pf Rayleigh wave could be extracted from ambient seismic noise excited by Dorian for several days or even a single day, which means that we enlarge the seismic data sets for the future work of investigating shear velocity structures of the Earth's crust and upper mantle and understanding our planet more deeply.

Multimodal surface waves during energetic typhoons

Abstract:<p>Ambient noise tomography is a revolutionary technique in past twenty years, and has many far-reaching applications from exploration, regional and continental to global scales. Recently, surface wave overtones have been efficiently extracted from ambient noise cross-correlations by the frequency-Bessel (F-J) transform method. The excitations of overtones from noise cross-correlations, however, have not be investigated well. Here we collect 16-day continuous seismic data recorded by a seismic array installed in Mongolia during two super typhoons in 2011. Utilizing the F-J transform, we extract daily multimodal dispersion&#160;curves with high signal-to-noise ratios from vertical-vertical (Z-Z) component cross-correlations and transverse-transverse (T-T) component cross-correlations. For both the fundamental mode and overtones, our results show that the cross-coefficients between the wind speeds and the Z-Z dispersion amplitudes over 0.1Hz are over 0.6 in typhoon track regions, which suggests that these two typhoons excite Rayleigh waves over 0.1Hz.&#160; For T-T surface waves, however, typhoons only excite the fundament mode over 0.1Hz, and overtones do not relate to typhoons. Our results indicate that energetic typhoons can efficiently excite multimodal Rayleigh waves while Love waves during this period may not come from the microseisms excited by typhoons, which may help us to deepen our understanding of the coupling system among the atmosphere, oceans and the solid earth.</p>
Study Of Extracting Group Velocities Of Near-Surface Rayleigh Waves From Ambient Noise

Abstract:Traditional estimation of seismic waves velocities in Earth's interior is based on observation of waves imposed by natural earthquakes or human made explosions. The observation of seismic waves is limited in some places, where the probability of occurrence of natural earthquakes is small, the activity of plates is extremely stable or the seismic waves attenuation is too serious. In recent years a new method to measure the group velocities of Rayleigh waves using cross-correlation analysis of ambient noise has been presented, which largely break of the limitation of above, it does not depend on the natural occurrence of the earthquake, and can provide more information of short periods and shallow structure of the earth, and is successfully used in various areas in the world. Velocities tomography of ambient noise has shown strong vitality not only in the applications of large scale, but also in small scale. In this paper, empirical Green's functions(EGF) of Rayleigh surface waves is extracted through the calculation of ambient noise cross-correlation,which used three-components ambient noise experimental data of 12 receivers, that is acquired in October 15, 2009. The group velocities curve of Rayleigh surface wave is gotten and the method of extracting group velocities of near-surface using ambient noise is discussed in small scale within 100 meters.
Ambient sound directionality and rapid estimation of empirical Green’s functions in a coastal ocean

Abstract:Noise interferometry offers an opportunity for passive ocean remote sensing through retrieval of empirical Green’s functions (EGFs) from cross-correlations of ambient sound. At ranges of tens of ocean depths, obtaining stable and accurate EGF estimates usually requires noise averaging periods of hours or days. Decreasing the necessary averaging times without compromising the EGF accuracy is critically important for operational applications. Using data acquired in the Shallow Water 2006 experiment on the continental shelf off New Jersey, it has been found that occasionally averaging periods as short as a few minutes are sufficient. The phenomenon is observed for various receiver pairs but does not occur simultaneously in all azimuthal directions. Short averaging periods give EGFs in a broader frequency band and with a richer mode content. These are better suited to monitor physical processes in the water column. The conditions conducive to rapid EGF emergence are studied using in situ temperature measurements, meteorological information, and the acoustic data acquired with a horizontal line array. Strong intermittency is observed in the horizontal directionality of ambient sound. For various receiver pairs, EGFs are found to emerge rapidly when ambient sound directionality favors propagation in the direction from one receiver to the other.

Abstract:Current developments in signal processing are allowing for enhanced seismic illustrations and investigation of subsurface structures. Recently, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Continuous Wavelet Transformation (CWT) have been introduced to extract various features from a time series dataset. In this investigation, seismic signal with 10% Gaussian noise is transformed into sub-signals by EMD analysis to improve the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Then, CWT is implemented for each sub-signal to identify the exact locations of seismic reflections. The main objective of this study is to utilize the EMD as a noise filter in the time-domain and CWT to recognize the anomalous zone in each sub-signal. Based on the results of EMD and CWT, the true representation of a seismic signal with minimum noise in the time domain has been achieved. The successful integration of EMD and CWT is achieved in terms of the identification of true seismic reflections as localized anomalous zones at 0.8 sec, 1 sec, and 1.07 sec.

Abstract:Empirical Green's function (EGF) retrieval and turning ambient noise into useful signal by crosscorrelation or seismic interferometry (Curtis et al., 2006) has been a popular topic in recent years in the seismological community. Many have discussed how the interstation distance or its equivalent affects the accuracy of the Green's function that can be retrieved by crosscorrelation of long-range noise between two stations (e.g., Snieder, 2004; Bensen et al., 2007; Halliday and Curtis, 2008; Tsai, 2009; Kimman and Trampert, 2010). It is generally accepted that the necessary or optimum interstation distance strongly depends on source distribution, length of records (and, hence, is naturally related to source distribution), and the duration of the Green's function to be retrieved. Noise generated by a surface source can be efficiently used to reconstruct the Green's function of surface waves if we focus on the accuracy of the phase, and not be too concerned with the amplitude accuracy of the retrieved Green's function (Halliday and Curtis, 2008; Kimman and Trampert, 2010). © 2013 © 2013 by The Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

Abstract:Rayleigh waves propagate along the free surface and vanish exponentially in the vertical direction, which suggests that they are strongly influenced by free-surface topography. Since they have strong energy, Rayleigh waves are the most damaging wave during earthquake, and have strong noise in petroleum exploration. Because of their strong energy and the dispersive characteristic in a vertically inhomogeneous earth, however, they are widely utilized in environmental and engineering geophysics. To study how Rayleigh-wave behaves with topographic free surface, we proposed a finite difference scheme incorporating the acoustic/elastic interface approach into a ‘stair-case’ mesh for modeling surface-wave propagation. The effectiveness and accuracy were demonstrated by modeling results of a two-dimensional homogeneous half-space model with a slope free surface. The characteristics of Rayleigh-wave propagation strongly affected by topographic free surface are demonstrated by numerical examples of three simple topographic models. The most important revealed by modeling results is that, the dispersion characteristics are determined by the thicknesses of the underground layers in the direction perpendicular to the slope free surface. The middle of receiver-spread assumption was further verified, which provides a guideline to applying surface-wave methods to near-surface problems.

Abstract:When averaged over sources or disorder, cross-correlation of diffuse fields yield the Green's function between two passive sensors. This technique is applied to elastic ultrasonic waves in an open scattering slab mimicking seismic waves in the Earth's crust. It appears that the Rayleigh wave reconstruction depends on the scattering properties of the elastic slab. Special attention is paid to the specific role of bulk to Rayleigh wave coupling, which may result in unexpected phenomena like a persistent time-asymmetry in the diffuse regime.
Exploring Source Regions of Single- and Double-Frequency Microseisms Recorded in Eastern North American Margin (ENAM) by Cross-Correlation

Abstract:Summary Strongly asymmetric cross-correlation functions (CCF) of ambient noise indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the noise sources, and can be used to locate these sources. With this premise, a grid-search procedure is applied to explore the frequency dependent source locations of the single- (SF) and double-frequency (DF) microseisms recorded in eastern North American margin (ENAM). The frequency dependent Rayleigh wave group velocities are determined based on CRUST1.0 model and the Preliminary Reference Earth model and then the theoretical travel time differences from each hypothetical source to all station pairs are calculated by the fast marching method. Then a misfit function at each hypothetical source is defined to take the difference between the calculated travel time differences and the time lags observed from CCFs. A factor of reliability is defined considering the Rayleigh wave attenuation, the correlation coefficients between the microseisms and the Wavewatch III hindcasts of ocean wave spectra, and the efficiency of conversion from DF energy in water to seismic Rayleigh waves as a function of water depth and frequency. Together with the correlation analyses of the power spectra densities of the microseisms among stations, the primary source regions of SF and DF microseisms recorded in ENAM are estimated: 1) the sources of SF microseisms are likely distributed in the continental shelf dominantly as well as adjacent deep ocean area in western North Atlantic Ocean, and 2) the long-period and short-period DF microseisms appear generated in deep ocean near the continental slope and in the continental shelf and slope of ENAM, respectively.

Abstract:Rayleigh waves, surface waves that travel along a “free” surface such as the earth-air or the earth-water interface, are usually characterized by relatively low velocity, low frequency, and high amplitude. Rayleigh waves are the result of interfering P and SV waves. Particle motion of the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves in a homogeneous medium moving from left to right is elliptical in a counter-clockwise (retrograde) direction along the free surface. As depth increases, the particle motion becomes prograded and is still elliptical when reaching sufficient depth. The motion is constrained to a vertical plane consistent with the direction of wave propagation.

Abstract:The continuous geomagnetic field survey holds an important potential in future prevention of tsunami damages, and also, it could be used in tsunami forecast. In this work, we were able to detected for the first time Rayleigh and ionospheric acoustic gravity wave propagation in the Z-component of the geomagnetic field due to the Japanese tsunami, 2011 prior to the tsunami arrival. The geomagnetic measurements were obtained in the epicentral near and far-field. Also, these waves were detected within minutes to few hours of the tsunami arrival. For these reasons, these results are very encouraging, and confirmed that the geomagnetic field monitoring could play an important role in the tsunami warning systems, and also, it could provide additional information in the induced ionospheric wave propagation models due to tsunamis.

Abstract:There is one wave which is spread only along the free-surface and produced under the intervene effection of P-wave and SV-wave near the free-surface named Rayleigh-wave. Its existence was strictly proved and its propagation property was studied first by Lord Rayleigh. Since its energy is very strong, in earthquake, it is the most damaging wave. Numerical simulation is one of most important research method of seismic and seismology. There is one key problem of simulating Rayleigh-wave propagating in half-space media with topography, which is how to realize the free-surface condition in seismic numerical modeling. The AEA method which was first given by XU to solve the numerical realizing problem of 2D plane free-surface in his paper in 2007 was used with step approximate method to solve the topography free-surface numerical problem. 2D and 3D half space model with topography was modeling with staggered-grid finite-difference method and the new scheme for topography free-surface realizing. And the effect of the topography for Rayleigh-wave propagation is analyzed based the numerical simulation results.

Abstract:Due to the partly diffuse character of ambient noise, the retrieval of amplitude information and attenuation from noise cross-correlations has been difficult. Here, we apply the temporal reweighting method proposed by Weaver & Yoritomo to seismic data from the USArray in the central-midwest US. The results show considerable improvements in retrieved Green's functions in both symmetry and causality. The reweighting is able to make the effective incident noise field more isotropic (though not yet truly isotropic). It produces more robust amplitude measurements and also makes both the causal and anticausal parts usable. This suggests that it could be widely applicable for retrieval of Green's functions from ambient noise for attenuation study. The results also suggest an alternative measure of signal-to-noise ratio that complements the conventional one.
Study of Irregular Wave Run-Up over Fringing Reefs Based on a Shock-Capturing Boussinesq Model

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a parametric study of irregular wave run-up over fringing reefs using the shock-capturing Boussinesq wave model Funwave-TVD to better understand the role of fringing reefs in the mitigation of wave-driven flooding. Laboratory experiments were newly performed with a typical fringing reef profile and typical hydrodynamic conditions to validate the model. Experimental data shows irregular wave run-ups are dominated by the low-frequency motions and confirms the run-up resonant phenomenon over the back-reef slope, which has been revealed in previous numerical studies. It is demonstrated that irregular wave evolution and run-up over fringing reefs are reasonably reproduced by the present model with a proper grid size. However, the infragravity run-up height and highest 2% run-up height over the back-reef slope are under-predicted due to the underestimation of the infragravity wave height over the reef flat. The validated model was then utilized to model irregular wave transformations and run-ups under different conditions. Through a series of numerical experiments, the effects of key hydrodynamic and reef geometry parameters, including the reef flat width, water depth over the reef flat, fore-reef slope angle and back-reef slope angle, on the irregular wave run-up were investigated. Variations of spectral components of irregular wave run-ups were examined to better understand the physical process underlying the effect of each parameter.
An Analysis of Surface Waves in the Caribbean Sea based on a High-Resolution Numerical Wave Model

Abstract:Surface waves are extremely important in a large variety of oceanographic applications and thus, the study of their spatiotemporal characteristics remains crucial. This study analyzes waves in the Caribbean Sea (CS) and western Atlantic Ocean (AO) using a high-resolution (HR) Simulating WAves Nearshore model validated with buoy observations and paired with a HR bathymetric dataset from 2010 – 2019. Island sheltering effects are examined but special attention is given to these effects under Hurricane Dorian in The Bahamas using observations from the China-France Oceanographic Satellite. Results illustrate that wave heights within the CS fluctuated with Caribbean Low-Level Jet activity, but a different wave regime exists within the AO. While wind waves overwhelmingly dominate the wave field and this is true even in the AO, surprisingly, the contribution of swell in the central CS was equal to one site in the AO. Possibly, due to interaction with the shallow Nicaraguan Rise, wave heights were strongly (depth-induced) refracted nearly 45°, a feature unseen in previous research using coarse bathymetric datasets. Island sheltering effects were pervasive and were naturally most pronounced under hurricane conditions. Crucially, New Providence in The Bahamas is vulnerable to hurricane-forced waves funneled through the Grand Bahama and Northeastern Providence Channels.

Improving Seismic Remote Sensing of Typhoon with a Three-Dimensional Earth Model.

Abstract:Typhoon-induced P-wave microseisms can be observed using seismological arrays and analyzed for the seismic monitoring of ocean storms. This paper presents a frequency-domain beamforming (FB) method that integrates a three-dimensional (3-D) Earth model to better capture the heterogeneities in the subsurface structure, and therefore yield more accurate ray-tracing and travel-time predictions. This method is applied to the Super Typhoon Lupit (2009) using seismological array observations from the Northeast China Extended Seismic Array (NECESSArray) and high-sensitivity seismograph network in Japan (Hi-net). The results show that the localized P-wave microseism source regions based on the 3-D model are in better agreement with the theoretical source regions and typhoon centers than those based on a conventional one-dimensional (1-D) model. The significance of using a 3-D model instead of a 1-D model in the FB method is further investigated by comparing the consistency of the localization results for the two different arrays, with the localized source regions being more mutually concordant when using the 3-D model. The results demonstrate that integrating the 3-D model into the FB method improves the accuracy of locating the typhoon-induced P-wave microseism source regions.
New Developments In Analysis Of High-Frequency Rayleigh Waves

Abstract:The shear (S)-wave velocity of near-surface materials (such as soil, rocks, and pavement) and its effect on seismic-wave propagation are of fundamental interest in many ground-water, engineering, and environmental studies. The multichannel analysis of surface waves has been applied to various near-surface problems. Tens near-surface Rayleigh wave application papers have appeared in the literature over last eight years. Surface-wave techniques show their capability of providing accurate S-wave velocities of shallow materials and high potential of providing attenuation properties of near-surface rocks. New developments in surface-wave techniques have been made over the last two years. We developed a scheme using the finite-difference method to model high-frequency Rayleigh-waves in near-surface mediums. This stable and efficient scheme provides a valuable tool in understanding of characteristics of Rayleigh waves in various near-surface geological settings. We have developed an algorithm of estimating S-wave velocities of a compressible Gibson half-space (a non-layered earth model) from Rayleigh waves. This algorithm allows us to estimate S-wave velocities of the non-layered earth model with minimum of three Rayleigh-wave phase velocities. We have also developed an algorithm of generating image of dispersive energy by slant stacking. The real power of the algorithm is its capability to generate an image of dispersive energy from data acquired in an arbitrary acquisition geometry (for example fan configuration), which lays down a foundation for true 3D surface-wave analysis. We have studied feasibility of detecting voids with Rayleigh-wave diffraction. The results of this study are encouraging.
Resolving Shallow Moment Releases of Megathrust Earthquakes by Empirical Green’s Function‐Based Inversions: A New Approach for Tsunami Warning

Abstract:Tsunamis are secondary hazards generated by megathrust earthquakes, which are commonly related to coseismic slips occurring at shallow depths. Various methods were proposed to quickly predict tsunami excitations, while these methods mostly require specific observations or modeling techniques, which limits their application to global subduction zones. In this study, we propose an inversion technique that utilizes the water‐reverberation phases in teleseismic P coda waves to discriminate shallow and deep slips and adopts teleseismic empirical Green’s functions (EGFs) to enable rapid inversions. We developed an EGF extraction and interpolation method to construct Green’s functions. We apply this algorithm to seven megathrust earthquakes, which have been well studied and identified with or without significant shallow slips. In comparison with inversions performed with theoretical Green’s functions, the EGF‐based inversion technique is more effective in discriminating these two types of earthquakes. We propose a threshold to evaluate the percentage of shallow moment releases and found that the EGF‐based inversion result resembles that of joint inversion results. We also analyze the possibility to apply the EGF‐based inversion technique for tsunami warning purposes and infer that it serves as a promising algorithm to enable efficient tsunami early warning.
Green Functions Between Antipodal Station Pairs from Cross-Correlation of Ambient Noises

Abstract:Ambient-noise cross-correlation is widely used to retrieve the Green function between two seismic stations. The Green functions of several body-wave phases between two near antipodal stations can be extracted by cross-correlating the coda waves of large earthquakes. In this study, we cross-correlate the data from Peking University temporary seismic arrays and China provincial seismic network in the Qinling and the data from the GSN (Global Seismographic Network) stations in South America to retrieve body-wave Green functions. The cross-correlation result clearly shows several body-wave phases (e. g., PKIKP, PP, PcPPKP, SKSP). Meanwhile, very similar Green-function waveforms can be retrieved by cross-correlating the synthetic seismograms generated from a 1D Earth model. This result suggests that free oscillations (normal modes) generated by large earthquakes are the most important energy source for the body-wave Green functions. The synthetic test also indicates that focal mechanism can influence the correlation result, e. g. the PKIKP phase cannot be observed if only strike-slip events are stacked. Our results suggest that by rejecting strike-slip events during the processing, we can increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the Green functions and reduce the computation time. Our study provides an example to demonstrate that the body-wave Green function may contain heterogeneity information of the Earth.
