Abstract:Solar interfacial evaporation, featured by high energy transfer efficiency, low cost, and environmental compatibility, has been widely regarded as a promising technology for solar desalination. However, the interplay between energy transfer and water transport in the same channels suggests that the tradeoff between high efficiency and long-term stability inherently exists in conventional photothermal nanomaterials. We summarize state-of-the-art research on various anti-salt clogging photothermal microstructures as long-term stable interfacial solar evaporators for solar desalination. The review starts with an overview of the current status and the fundamental limit of photothermal materials for solar desalination. Four representative strategies are analyzed in detail with the most recent experimental demonstrations, including fluid convection enhancement, surface wettability engineering, energy-mass-path decoupling, and surface chemistry engineering. Finally, this article focuses on the challenges in anti-salt clogging solar interfacial evaporators and potential point-of-use applications in the future.

Abstract:Conventional active seawater evaporation technologies, that is, they include components with mechanical moving parts, generally involve large plants with high capital and operating costs. Recently, the passive solar-driven interfacial evaporation (PSDIE) with no active parts is considered as one of the most promising solar energy utilization and freshwater acquisition way. Especially in isolated and impoverished off-grid areas, passive desalination with economic feasibility and reliability has great application prospects. Based on the effective optical-thermal control of evaporator design and reasonable arrangement of deployment scheme, thermal localization in the vapor-liquid interface is conducive to reducing the heat dissipation into the bulk water and significantly improving the efficiency of desalination. Nonetheless, the Achilles' heel of the technology, namely the existence of salt accumulation at the photothermal interface under the condition of high intensity work including concentrated brine water and intense solar irradiation, which inevitably reduces the availability of fresh water resources and the service life of the evaporator. Addressing this issue is of the utmost importance and arduous task to maintain uninterrupted passive evaporator operation. In this review, the outline of the state-of-the-art self-propelling salt-blocking strategies in PSDIE is mainly divided into three categories, i.e. mechanical removal, shielding effect, and force-driven fluid flow. Finally, the challenges and prospects of salt resistance in PSDIE are emphasized, providing a roadmap for the future development of solar evaporation technology.

Abstract:Solar desalination is a promising and sustainable solution for water shortages in the future. Interfacial solar‐to‐heat conversion for desalination has attracted increasing attention in the past decades, due to the heat localization induced high thermal efficiency, simple structure, and low cost. In this review, the authors summarize and analyze the critical processes involved in such a solar desalination system, including the thermal conversion and transport, salt dissipation, and vapor manipulation. Mathematical models of heat transfer and salt dissipation are also built for quantitative analysis of systematic performance relative to properties of employed materials and system designs. Recent efforts devoted to improving the overall thermal efficiency, salt rejection, and water yield are then summarized. Based on the analysis and previous results, opportunities for further interfacial solar desalination development are highlighted.

Abstract:Water scarcity has emerged as an intense global threat to humanity and needs prompt attention from the scientific community. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation and seawater desalination are promising strategies to resolve the primitive water shortage issue using renewable resources. However, the fragile solar thermal devices, complex fabricating techniques, and high cost greatly hinder extensive solar energy utilization in remote locations. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of a cost-effective solar-driven interfacial evaporator and seawater desalination system composed of carbon cloth (CC)-wrapped polyurethane foam (CC@PU). The developed solar evaporator had outstanding photo-thermal conversion efficiency (90%) with a high evaporation rate (1.71 kg m−2 h−1). The interfacial layer of black CC induced multiple incident rays on the surface allowing the excellent solar absorption (92%) and intensifying heat localization (67.37 °C) under 1 kW m−2 with spatially defined hydrophilicity to facilitate the easy vapor escape and validate the efficacious evaporation structure using extensive solar energy exploitation for practical application. More importantly, the long-term evaporation experiments with minimum discrepancy under seawater conditions endowed excellent mass change (15.24 kg m−2 in consecutive 8 h under 1 kW m−2 solar irradiations) and promoted its operational sustainability for multi-media rejection and self-dissolving potential (3.5 g NaCl rejected from CC@PU surface in 210 min). Hence, the low-cost and facile fabrication of CC@PU-based interfacial evaporation structure showcases the potential for enhanced solar-driven interfacial heat accumulation for freshwater production with simultaneous salt rejection.

Abstract:Solar‐driven interfacial desalination (SDID), which is based on localized heating and interfacial evaporation, provides an opportunity for developing environmentally friendly and cost‐effective seawater thermal desalination. However, localized heating and rapidly generated interfacial steam may cause salt to accumulate on the evaporator's surface and block the channel of steam evaporation. Salt accumulation inevitably reduces the light absorption and service period of the solar absorber, resulting in a significant decrease in evaporation efficiency over time. Salt accumulation makes it difficult to produce SDID devices with high energy efficiency and long‐term stability for large‐scale use in remote poverty‐stricken areas. Therefore, the exploration of novel and effective strategies for addressing salt accumulation through both material design and structural engineering has attracted more attention in recent years. This review presents an overview of the state‐of‐the‐art advancements in salt‐resistant photothermal evaporation and discusses the critical issues for achieving salt mitigation SDID, focusing on the classification of salt mitigation strategies based on photothermal evaporation configurations, the basic mechanism of salt mitigation, and the architectural design of photothermal materials. Finally, the important challenges and prospects of SDID are discussed to providing a meaningful roadmap to efficient salt mitigation SDID.

Abstract:Localized heating-based solar distillation has recently emerged as an efficient and facile way to generate freshwater out of saline water. Salt fouling, however, remains a fundamental challenge to stable operation of the desalination system, in particular for high-salinity brine. Here we demonstrate a solar-driven interfacial evaporation-based desalination structure, which achieves localized surface salt precipitation through mediating the horizontal salt concentration gradient within the printed paper-based solar absorber, to minimize salt fouling while maintaining heat localization. With optimized design, such desalination system achieves a stable evaporation efficiency of ~78% under 1100 W m−2 solar illumination, and simultaneously generates drinkable water out of 10 wt% brine with a solar-to-water conversion efficiency more than 40% and NaCl salts with higher productivity over conventional bulk heating-based salt farm technology. This low-cost, environmentally-friendly, bifunctional desalination technology not only helps solve the salt fouling issue but also holds the potential to offer a new way to extract minerals from seawater.

Abstract:Abstract The rising demand for freshwater and the challenge of energy scarcity have fueled interest in solar interfacial water evaporation technology, which harnesses solar energy to produce clean water. Attaining high performance with this technology necessitates the development of highly efficient photothermal materials, heat management optimization, and the resolution of salt deposition issues to ensure equipment longevity. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess large specific surface areas and high porosity, making them ideal for various water treatment applications. In recent years, MOFs have been extensively employed for solar-driven desalination. Here, we review recent developments in the functionalization of MOFs thin films, composites and MOFs-based derivatives and strategies for achieving efficient seawater desalination with MOFs while preventing salt deposition. Furthermore, desalination systems that integrate pollutant degradation and power generation are discussed, which further expand the application scenarios of solar-driven interfacial water evaporation desalination technologies.

Abstract:Interfacial-heating solar desalination (IHSD), a sustainable and efficient method of harnessing solar energy to generate clean water, will contribute a meaningful technology to the ongoing freshwater scarcity. However, the salt management toward highly salinity brine (>10 wt%) and water production are still the bottlenecks of this technology. With the rapid development of this important field, many new strategies and designs have been developed most recently. Nevertheless, a comprehensive overview of the important progress on salt management of high-salinity brine and enhanced water production is yet lacking. In this review, we focus on the interfacial-heating solar desalination of high-salinity brine (>10 wt%) and the drinking water production. The representative strategies for salt management during solar desalination of high-salinity brine are highlighted and categorized into seven categories. The principles, comparative analysis and comparison for these different strategies are discussed. Subsequently, how to optimize the evaporator and condenser to boost water production is summarized. Finally, the challenges and future research opportunities for interfacial-heating solar desalination are described and proposed.

A Separation and Desalination Process for Farmland Saline-Alkaline Water

Abstract:Salination poses serious hazards to farmland soil. For the purpose of solving soil salination, desalination of water sources, and other problems faced by arid areas, a separation and desalination process for farmland saline-alkaline water is proposed; a separation and desalination device based on this process is also presented and tested. Results indicate that water associated with the pretreatment device satisfied the working conditions of the composite nanofiltration (NF)-reverse osmosis (RO) membrane system. The composite NF-RO membrane system produced a better filtering effect than either the NF membrane or the RO membrane. When used for filtering saline-alkaline water, the composite NF-RO membrane system achieved a desalination rate of 96.06%, a total hardness removal rate of 98.93%, and a Cl- removal rate of 99.32%, adhering to the standard for irrigation water quality. The flashing-condensation process realized a fresh water recovery rate greater than 70%. During brine evaporation using solar salt making processes, the primary compound of crystals precipitated was NaCl (with a relative content of 93%), suggesting that the precipitates have the potential values of industrial salts. These findings offer new technical references for solving the problem of farmland irrigation water faced by saline-alkaline areas worldwide.

Abstract:Amid the gradual global issue of freshwater resources scarcity, solar interfacial distillation has shown immense potential in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. As the central component of this technology, photothermal materials have been extensively studied for highly efficient solar-vapor conversion. In this review, we present recent advancements in natural and natural-inspired photothermal materials for solar interfacial evaporation. Diverse processing techniques such as carbonization, physical coating, and chemical reactions, etc. used to convert natural materials into photothermal materials are summarized. Moreover, the synthesis of various natural-inspired photothermal materials that mimic natural structures to increase the rate of evaporation and resist salt crystallization were reported. Finally, we highlight the theoretical and practical implications of the current photothermal materials and discuss their further challenges and prospects.

Abstract:In recent years, solar-driven interfacial desalination (SDID) has emerged as an effective, environmentally friendly and promising strategy to address the shortage of freshwater resources. However, during the evaporation process, salt crystals will precipitate at the photothermal interface, which will hinder the water transfer and light absorption problems of the evaporator and seriously affect the long-term stability and large-scale practical application of SDID system. To solve the salt accumulation problem and improve the evaporation performance, various advanced photothermal materials and novel structural designs have been reported for the preparation of high-performance solar evaporators. This review begins with a brief introduction to salt accumulation, which is currently the main challenge hindering the stable operation of solar evaporators. The second part focuses on five current state-of-the-art salt resistance strategies: diffusion and convection, Marangoni effect, Janus structure, salt ion repulsion effect and localized salt crystallization. For each strategy its application and mechanism in the evaporation process is described in detail, and the advantages and limitations are compared. We conclude by aiming to provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities facing SDID technology, thus stimulating new ideas for future evaporator design and providing guidance for future research.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is a highly efficient and ecofriendly technology for producing freshwater. Herein, self-floating plasmon Ag/black TiO2/carbon porous layered foams (Ag-BTCFs) were demonstrated as efficient solar-thermal convectors using freeze-drying cast-molding and high-temperature surface hydrogenation strategies. This all-in-one three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked self-floating porous layered foam material with full-spectrum absorption can fully harvest sunlight (∼95.45%) and effectively block heat transfer to its sublayer. The synergy of sufficient utilization of absorbed ultraviolet radiation by black TiO2 (b-TiO2), visible light absorption by Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via localized surface plasmon resonance, and near-infrared absorption by layered-amorphous carbon can achieve full-solar-spectrum absorption to concentrate thermal energy. In addition to their synergistic effect, they are conducive to the relaxation of hot electrons when utilizing photogenerated holes to degrade pollutants in domestic wastewater. The steam generation efficiency of Ag-BTCFs is up to 1.79 kg m-2h-1 due to their solar energy conversion efficiency of 81.74% under 1 sun irradiation, which is five times higher than the evaporation rate of pure water. Notably, the material's efficient ion removal rate of 99.80% for solar desalination indicates its high potential for various applications. This strategy provides new insights for fabricating recyclable heat-blocking layer systems against thermal loss to enhance solar steam generation.

Abstract:The exhaustion of clean water is a rising concern in terms of water scarcity and the water–energy nexus where photothermal desalination could solve the predicament. This review provides cognizance on solar‐to‐thermal conduction mechanisms, as well as water‐pumping and salt‐rejection, which is explained through capillary action. New‐generation nanostructures such as nanomembrane, Janus nanoarchitecture, and reticular materials could enable water purification. Photothermal interfacial evaporation (PTIE) draws the attention of researchers owing to its eco‐friendly approach of obtaining purified potable water from unusable seawater. The salience behind this technology ensures an indispensable commodity highly accessible via implementation of localized heating principles to vaporize seawater at water/air interface, instead of excessive energy consuming bulk‐water evaporating desalination systems. The significance of any technology depends on its component, and photothermal desalination technology lies on its material. In this review, focus on ultramodern nanomembranes, Janus nanoarchitectures, and reticular materials as promising solar–thermal nanostructures is highlighted. This report aims to inspire novel advancements in nanomaterials for photothermal desalination by providing cognizance into the mechanisms of photothermal conversion and principles of capillary action to construct innovative water pathway to continuously pump water with excellent salt‐rejecting feature, thereby enhancing PTIE performance. With desalination as the focus, insights into vapor condensation for the collection of desalinated water are discussed. Furthermore, reports on innovative solar‐driven water purification projects undertaken by different countries to be in action in the near future are incorporated. Eventually, this review sheds light on some practical outlook toward the optimization of judicious nanomaterials for a sustainable tomorrow.

Abstract:In solar desalination, resolving the durability and efficiency losses against salt precipitation has become a long sought-after goal. We showcase a facile, yet high efficiency solar distillation device design that exhibits durable operation in hypersaline brine, where a bifunctional Janus structure is introduced for self-driven salt resistance salt resistance and photothermal conversion. A Janus scaffold is constructed using an acrylate hydrogel and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) for self-driven salt resistance: the polyelectrolyte effect of the gel prevents ion accumulation; and the hydrophobic PVDF suppresses ion diffusion to the evaporative interface. Then, the hydrophobic part is functionalized with a new light absorber, a Ni/C nano-composite, to achieve effective photothermal conversion across full solar spectrum. The evaporator is capable of a 14-day continuous working in hypersaline brine (10 wt% NaCl) at a rate of 1.56 kg m-2/h, which is among the best reported durability approaches the theoretical limit. Hopefully, the new design would greatly expand the freedom of solar desalination for working in extreme environments.

Abstract:The construction of photothermal materials with ideal salt tolerance has been a major subject for efficient solar desalination. Herein, a novel photothermal material based on porous ionic polymers (PIPs) nanowires is synthesized by Sonogashira‐Hagihara cross‐coupling reaction using ionic salt and alkynylbenzene as building blocks. The PIPs nanowires monolith shows abundant porosity with low density, leading a superior thermal insulation. The intrinsic superhydrophilicity of PIPs nanowires endows it with desired water transportation ability. By facile spraying Chinese carbon‐ink on the PIPs nanowires monolith, its light absorption can be enhanced to be 90%. Based on these merits, the PIPs nanowires based photothermal materials show high solar energy conversion efficiency (81% under 1 sun irradiation). More interestingly, its inherently ionic framework can result in an ion–ion interaction between the external ions in water and ionic groups in PIPs framework, thus leading to excellent desalination ability by combing its unique superhydrophilicity, for example, no salt accumulation is observed after 6 h duration at 1 sun irradiation. Compared with the existing salt‐resistant photothermal materials, the method takes the advantage of the intrinsically ionic feature of PIPs without using any artificial process, thus may open a new way for design and fabrication of high‐performance salt‐rejection photothermal materials.

Abstract:The scarcity of freshwater is becoming more pronounced due to the escalation of global warming and environmental pollution. Considering the enormous availability of seawater resources, maximizing the utilization of marine resources is imperative to address the issue at hand effectively. Solar desalination , with the advantages of safety, environmental preservation and energy efficiency, has become a research hotspot in freshwater acquisition applications. By optimizing light absorption, light-to-thermal conversion, thermal management, and water transport of the photothermal conversion materials, solar desalination configuration has made significant gains in evaporation rate and energy efficiency. However, the collection of clean water, one of the cores of solar desalination configuration, still suffers from significant flaws. In this review, we undertake a comprehensive analysis and detailed description of the prevailing solar evaporators , atypical evaporators, and the accompanying condensate collection mechanisms employed in the configuration of solar desalination. In addition, conventional single-stage solar desalination commonly employs two primary configurations: one-piece interface evaporation and separated interface evaporation. Finally, the unique multi-stage solar desalination configuration mainly revolves around separated photothermal and evaporative interfaces. Based on the aforementioned theoretical framework and extensive research, we further propose design strategies and concepts to enhance the efficiency of solar water purification . It is anticipated that the advancement of effective solar water desalination technology would address the serious situation of water shortage in actual society.

Abstract:Solar desalination, which relies on localized heating for interfacial water evaporation, is regarded as a promising and sustainable approach for freshwater production. Significant progress has been achieved in developing high-performance solar-driven interfacial vapor generators (SIVGs), however, their performance in high-concentration brine remains unsatisfactory. Herein, a novel SIVG is proposed as a candidate with advanced ionization engineering design for solar desalination, which exhibits enhanced desalination performance. The design of ionization engineering can promote salt-blocking effects through electrostatic attraction between salt ions in seawater and polymer chains of hydrogel-based evaporator, and high-continuity porous structures, which also contributes to a high evaporation performance by increasing the production of activated water molecules. Furthermore, the introduction of CuO nanoparticles with excellent localized surface plasmon resonance effect enables the light-absorbing copper-based hydrogel (LACH) to achieve an impressive sunlight absorptance rate of 95 %. The evaporation rate and energy efficiency of LACH reach a remarkable 3.93 kg·m−2·h−1 and 93.5 % in simulated brine (3.5 wt% NaCl solution) under one-sun illumination. The salt-resistant LACH-related SIVG is one of ideal candidates for sustainable freshwater harvesting over extended periods. This study is expected to offer valuable insights for advancing the research and development of next-generation solar desalination devices.

Abstract:Solar desalination separates freshwater and salt from brine by utilizing solar energy, which is an ideal solution to the global water crisis. Among all parts of a solar-evaporator, the brine-solid interface is the central element where major events, including water evaporation, salt crystal nucleation, brine wetting and de-wetting, etc. take place. Surface wettability of solar evaporators plays a leading role in enhancing energy conversion efficiency, as it governs many key factors including water spreading, transport evaporation and salt adhesion, etc. In this review, we establish the correlation between surface wettability and the multiple solar desalination processes, i.e., mobility of the three-phase contact line, salt crystal nucleation and growth dynamics, liquid/salt/vapor transport path, droplet nucleation and growth, etc. Recent highlights on super wettability-empowered highly efficient solar desalination systems are also discussed. Finally, existing challenges and future opportunity in efficient, continuous, and industrial-scale desalination systems based on super wettability are outlooked.

Abstract:Solar interfacial desalination is a potential pathway for freshwater using solar energy and brine. Many recent advances have been extensively studied to high-efficiency solar steam yield, however, the decrease of evaporation performance resulted from salt accumulation at absorbers inevitably hinder their development, especially in high-salinity brine (>10 wt%). Here, we propose a Janus and superhydrophilic designed evaporator for efficient and stable solar interfacial desalination in high-salinity brine. The Janus structure of the absorber, which has an upper layer of very light-absorbing (>95 %) carbon fiber powder and a bottom layer of insulated aramid fiber powder, allows for efficient light absorption and thermal management to promote efficient water evaporation. Furthermore, the impact of carboxylate cellulose ensures that the absorber with an ultra-high-water content and salt ion diffusion rate. Therefore, the Janus and superhydrophilic design can realize an evaporation rate as high as 1.25 kg m−2h−1 with a salinity of 15 wt% brine under 1-sun illumination and achieve salt resistance in outdoor conditions for a long time. Therefore, this technique simply integrates outdated fiber powder with the current solar interfacial evaporators and establishes a new paradigm for very effective and reliable high-salinity brine treatment.
