Abstract:•Autophagy is essential for the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, and there is a strong link between epilepsy and autophagy.•Autophagy dysregulation has an important role in epileptogenesis and autophagy may serve as a new target for anti-epileptic drugs.•Glial cell autophagy, mitochondrial autophagy, and synaptic autophagy, play significant roles in the mechanism of seizure and post-ictal injury.•Some anti-epileptic drugs exert neuroprotective and anti-epileptic effects by promoting protective autophagy or inhibiting excessive autophagy.
