Abstract:The lack of viable means to simultaneously address intrinsic activity, density of active sites and electronic conductivity issues remains a grand challenge restricting the development of earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report a boride-mediated synthesis method to address these issues. Our study found that the cobalt boride catalyst prepared by chemical reduction method is actually an amorphous mixture of CoBx, CoO and B-containing impurities. Annealing treatment of this composite initiates the solid reaction between CoBx and CoO, leading to the formation of tiny Co nanoparticles on the surface of amorphous CoO/B2O3 nanosheets. Besides the creation of abundant accessible Co/CoO active sites for the alkaline HER, the annealing treatment can also help to increase the specific surface area and to improve the electrical conductivity. Benefiting from these favorable attributes, the post-annealed Co/CoO/B2O3/CF catalyst exhibited outstanding HER performance in an alkaline electrolyte. It required overpotentials of 16 and 100 mV to afford 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and showed good stability in the long-term operation, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C.

Abstract:Developing durable and efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of great significance for hydrogen production. By reasonably doping nonmetallic elements, the electronic configuration of transition metal electrocatalysts can be effectively adjusted, and the activity of the catalysts can be improved. Herein, B-doped CoP/nitrogen-doped carbon (B-CoP/NC) was constructed by phosphiding B-doped Co-Prussian blue analogue pretreated with NaBH 4 . Benefiting from the enhanced electrochemical active area, conductivity, and suitable electron distribution caused by the introduction of B, the defective nanocubes of B-CoP/NC catalyst only need overpotentials of 158 and 234 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm -2 and a low Tafel slope of 67 mV dec -1 . This work supplies a general route of introducing B into transition metal phosphide by NaBH4 pretreatment and offers a method to design the HER catalyst.

Abstract:It is highly desired to design and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions. Herein, we report the development of ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticle decorated one-dimensional Co nanowires grown on Ti mesh (PtCo-Co/TiM). Owing to its favorable composition and structure, the PtCo-Co/TiM can deliver an ultrahigh current density of 46.5 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 70 mV in 1.0 M KOH, superior to recently reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. This catalyst also provides excellent long-term electrochemical durability with its catalytic activity being maintained for at least 50 h.

Abstract:The production of clean hydrogen fuel by the electrolysis of water requires highly active, low-cost and facilely prepared electrocatalyst that minimizes energy consumption. Here we report an active cobalt boride (CoB)-derived electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The CoB catalyst can be readily deposed on 3D nickel foam (NF) using a simple electroless plating method. A comprehensive analysis of the CoB catalyst with scanning electron microscopy transmission (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques revealed that CoOOH is formed on the surface of CoB catalyst during the OER process and Co(OH)(2) is formed in the HER process. The catalyst derived from CoB/NF exhibits low over potentials towards both OER and HER in alkaline solution. The electrolysis cell using the CoB-derived catalyst couple requires a cell voltage of 1.69 V to afford a current density of 10 mA/cm(2), which compares favorably with most non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts. The favorable combination of high-performance, low cost and facile preparation suggests that transition metal borides may act as promising electrocatalyst for water splitting. Carbon-protected bimetallic carbide nanoparticles for a highly efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the two important half reactions in current water-alkali and chlor-alkali electrolyzers. To make this reaction energy-efficient, development of highly active and durable catalytic materials in an alkaline environment is required. Herein we report the synthesis of carbon-coated cobalt-tungsten carbide nanoparticles that have proven to be efficient noble metal-free electrocatalysts for alkaline HER. The catalyst affords a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of 73 mV, which is close to that (33 mV) required by Pt/C to obtain the same current density. In addition, this catalyst operates stably at large current densities (>30 mA cm(-1)) for as long as 18 h, and gives nearly 100% Faradaic yield during alkaline HER. The excellent catalytic performance (activity and stability) of this nanocomposite material is attributed to the cooperative effect between nanosized bimetallic carbide and the carbon protection layer outside the metal carbide. The results presented herein offer the exciting possibility of using carbon-armoured metal carbides for an efficient alkaline HER, although pristine metal carbides are not, generally, chemically stable enough under such strong alkaline conditions.

Abstract:The preparation of renewable hydrogen via electrocatalytic water splitting is a burgeoning strategy in developing sustainable energy. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare an efficient non-precious metal based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution in alkaline electrolysis. Herein, we describe a functional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst by the combination of soaking metal ions in covalent organic framework (COF) and high temperature calcination. Especially, the 2Co-NC-700 catalyst possesses large specific surface area, appropriate defective nature and structural distortion, thus it embodies outstanding HER catalytic activity with only an overpotential of 303 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the solution of 1.0 M KOH. Moreover, the kinetics and durability are also confirmed. Theoretical calculations not only indicates that the stable configuration combined small-sized cobalt nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon but also reveals the synergistic effect of multiple active sites, while the optimal active location that shows the lowest hydrogen adsorption free energy is a major contributor for excellent HER. This work not only offers a highly efficient HER catalyst in alkaline environment but also provides a novel approach to develop non-precious metal nitrogen-doped carbon materials derived from COF as HER electrocatalysts in alkaline media.

Abstract:Transition metal borides (TMBs) are a class of important but less well-explored electrocatalytic materials for water splitting. The lack of an advanced methodology to synthesize complex nanostructured TMBs with tunable surface properties is a major obstacle to the exploration of the full potential of TMBs for electrocatalytic applications. Here, we report the facile fabrication of a cobalt foam (CF)-supported hierarchical nanostructured Co-Mo-B/CoMoO4-x composite using a hydrothermal method, followed by annealing and NaBH4 reduction treatments. Our study found that NaBH4 reduction of CoMoO4 resulted in the concurrent formation of amorphous Co-Mo-B and an O-vacancy-rich CoMoO4-x substrate, which cooperatively catalyzed the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline electrolyte. The hierarchical nanoporous structure derived from the dehydration and partial reduction reactions of the CoMoO4·nH2O precursor could offer ample accessible active sites, as well as interconnected channels for rapid mass transfer. In addition, the in situ growth of electrically conductive Co-Mo-B nanoparticles on the defective structured CoMoO4-x substrate imparted the electrocatalyst with good electrical conductivity. As a result, the Co-Mo-B/CoMoO4-x/CF catalyst showed impressively high activity and outstanding stability for the alkaline HER, outperforming most reported TMB electrocatalysts. For instance, it required an overpotential of 55 mV to afford 10 mA·cm-2 and showed a fluctuation of only ±8 mV in a 100 h constant-current test at 100 mA·cm-2.
Amorphous‐crystalline Co−B−P Catalyst for Synergistically Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The development of highly practical and stable catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains challenging to accomplish continuous H-2 production through water electrolysis. In this work, the porous network Co-B-P amorphous-crystalline catalyst was synthesized through a hydrothermal-alternating immersion boronization-phosphidation pathway. The Co-B-P nanocomposite consists of the amorphous Co-B-O and crystalline Co2P2O7 compositions. The Co-B-P catalyst shows highly effective HER electrochemical performance with low overpotential of 51 mV at current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and Tafel slope of 44 mV dec(-1) in alkaline solution (pH=14). After 1000 cycles of CV scanning, the catalyst shows no significant reduction in HER performance. Such superior HER performance can be ascribed to (1) the amorphous Co-B-O structure accelerating charge transfer between active sites and intermediates and (2) the formed P-O bonds of crystalline Co2P2O7 promoting the dissociation course of water molecules. The combination of crystalline and amorphous substances provides prospects for the design of HER catalyst structures in the future.

Abstract:Transition metal carbide (TMC) nanomaterials are promising alternatives to Pt, and are widely used as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, a bromide-induced wet-chemistry strategy to synthesize Co 2 C nanoparticles (NPs) was developed. Such NPs exhibited high electrocatalytic activity ( η = 181 mV for j = −10 mA·cm −2 ) and long-term stability (no obvious performance decrease after 4,000 cycles) for the HER. This study will pave the way for the design and fabrication of TMC NPs via a wet-chemistry method, and will have significant impacts on broader areas such as nanocatalysis and energy conversion.

Abstract:The effective advancement of skilled transition metal electrocatalysts is crucial for promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the process of water splitting. In this context, the integration of nickel (Ni) transition metal atoms into cobalt boride (CoB) is achieved through an electrochemical deposition approach, yielding a remarkably active electrocatalyst termed Ni@CoB for HER. At 10 mA cm−2, the HER overpotential is 63 mV with a Tafel slope of 64.73 mV dec-1. After 50 h of stability testing, there was no significant current decay observed. By employing material characterization techniques and DFT calculations, it has been shown that the incorporation of Ni leads to a surface reconstruction of CoB, thereby decreasing surface aggregation. The catalyst exhibits a uniform spherical porous structure, facilitating enhanced electron transfer. The doped Ni atoms form a bimetallic synergistic effect with Co atoms, not only increasing the stability of interatomic covalent bonds but also enhancing reaction kinetics. This study illuminates the influence of incorporating transition metal atoms into CoB on the activity of HER, presenting a promising strategy for designing high-performance catalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy as a promising renewable and sustainable energy has attracted growing attentions in recent years, in searching of low-cost electrocatalysts with high efficiency as alternatives of non-noble metals for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein we report an in-situ cobalt and nitrogen co-doped mesoporous graphitic carbon catalysts by directly pyrolyzing hyperbranched cobalt phthalocyanine (H-CoPc), which can efficiently catalyze HER in acidic, alkaline or neutral electrolytes. With only 0.62 at% of cobalt dopants, the outstanding Co@NG-800 catalyst exhibits excellent durability and HER activities with the overpotential as low as 286 mV in acid, 290 mV in alkaline and 480 mV in neutral, achieved at 10 mA cm−2 current density. These activities indicate that the Co@NG-800 catalyst can couple with the best available oxygen-evolving catalysts in the overall water-splitting. Meanwhile, the mesoporous structure derived from H-CoPc provides more active sites than un-hyperbranched precursor. This work may provide a novel organic metal complexes and simple route in designing highly active and durable transition metal and nitride co-doped carbonaceous electrocatalysts for HER.

Abstract:Exploration of high-efficiency non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts towards Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for water electrolysis. In this work, we adopt a facile hydrothermal deposition plus hydrogen reduction strategy to fabricate self-supported core/shell nanowire arrays as a high-performance electrocatalyst for HER. The nanowire arrays are firmly anchored on the nickel foam substrate, forming an integrated electrode with excellent stability. The formation mechanism of the unique core/shell nanowire arrays is also explored. By virtue of the superior intrinsic catalytic activity of CoO shell and excellent electrical conductivity of Co core, the electrode exhibits significantly promoted catalytic activity for HER with an ultra-low overpotential (76 mV at 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline solution, which is superior to almost all the reported CoO-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, the electrode also yields superior long-term durability without any significant performance degradation. DFT calculations further verify the underlying mechanisms. Our proposed optimization strategy sheds light on the development of high activity earth-abundant-metal-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:AbstractEven though transition‐metal phosphides (TMPs) have been developed as promising alternatives to Pt catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), further improvement of their performance requires fine regulation of the TMP sites related to their specific electronic structure. Herein, for the first time, boron (B)‐modulated electrocatalytic characteristics in CoP anchored on the carbon nanotubes (B‐CoP/CNT) with impressive HER activities over a wide pH range are reported. The HER performance surpasses commercial Pt/C in both neutral and alkaline media at large current density (>100 mA cm−2). A combined experimental and theoretical study identified that the B dopant could reform the local electronic configuration and atomic arrangement of bonded Co and adjacent P atoms, enhance the electrons’ delocalization capacity of Co atoms for high electrical conductivity, and optimize the free energy of H adsorption and H2 desorption on the active sites for better HER kinetics.
Efficient electrocatalytic water splitting by bimetallic cobalt iron boride nanoparticles with controlled electronic structure

Abstract:Developing an efficient bifunctional catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) in water splitting technology is very attractive for clean energy. Here, a new Co-Fe-B ternary catalyst with improved crystallinity is successfully synthesized by combining the chemical reduction and subsequent solid-state reaction method. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate the electronic structure redistribution is favor for the improved performance. The overpotential is only 129 mV and 280 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline condition, the corresponding Tafel slope is 67.3 mV dec−1 and 38.9 mV dec−1. Density functional theory calculations distinguish that the ternary crystalline Co-Fe-B catalysts are thermodynamically favorable for HER and OER. The actual active species of the ternary catalyst in OER is the CoOOH and FeOOH as indicated in ex situ Raman spectra. The present work may introduce promising crystallinity borides material for the anode and cathode of water splitting device.

Abstract:Cobalt nanocrystals encapsulated in N,O-dual-doped porous carbons as efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are reported. A heteroatom-rich-conjugated microporous polymer is first chemically deposited on a carbon fiber cloth, and after addition of a cobalt salt, pyrolyzed to produce a heteroatom-doped C/Co nanocrystal composite. With this process, the use of additional binders for preparation of electrodes can be avoided. With a trace cobalt loading (0.46 wt%), the electrodes achieve a low Tafel slope of 46 mV dec-1 and overpotential of only 69 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 m H2 SO4 . Experimental and computational studies reveal that the superior HER behavior is due to a decreased free energy of hydrogen adsorption, induced by i) electrons transferred from the cobalt nanocrystals to graphite layers and ii) N,O-dual doping reduced the Fermi level of neighboring C atoms.

Abstract:The versatile cobalt-phosphorus (Co-P) precursor was synthesized on Ni foam (NF) with an electrodeposition method. Simple room-temperature treatment of the precursor with 1 M NaOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 allows for the production of cobalt oxide nanorods (CoxOy/NF) and cobalt phosphate/phosphide (Co-Pi/CoP/NF), respectively. The resulting CoxOy/NF shows a low overpotential (η10) of 80 mV at −10 mA/cm2 in an alkaline electrolyte (pH = 14) for a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) toward electrocatalytic water splitting. The Co-Pi/CoP/NF exhibits a low η10 of 112 mV in an acidic electrolyte (pH = 0), in which the synergy between Co (+2) and Co (+3) may play an important role in the reaction.

Abstract:Electrochemically splitting water to produce clean hydrogen fuel requires high-performance electrocatalysts. Here, we report transition metal-boron alloy Co-W-B is an active electrocatalyst for water electrolysis. The Co-W-B catalyst can be readily deposited on nickle foam (NF) using a simple electroless plating method. A combination of phase/chemical state/microstructural analyses of the Co-W-B electrocatalyst was conducted using XRD, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and XPS techniques. The properly annealed Co-W-B/NF catalyst with an optimal composition exhibits a low overpotential along with a high stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution, which is among the best reported levels for non-noble HER catalysts. In addition, the Co-W-B/NF catalyst also shows moderate activity towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). These study results highlight the potential of transition metal-boron alloys as high-performance and low-cost electrocatalyst for water splitting.
