Abstract:The La(2)LiSbO(6): xCr^(3+) phosphors were synthesized by means of a high-temperature solid-phase method. Based on the differences in ionic radius, valence state, and formation energy, the substitution sites of Cr^(3+) ions are discussed in detail. Abstract:With the increasing demand for highly efficient and easily valuable near-infrared (NIR) illumination in many fields, such as night vision, agriculture and medical sectors, it is of great importance to develop new NIR light sources. Here, we have successfully synthesized a novel broadband NIR phosphor by incorporating Cr3+ ions into the CaY2ScZrAl3O12 (CYSZA) matrix. Under excitation at 455 nm, CYSZA:0.11Cr3+ exhibits a broad emission ranging from 650 to 1150 nm and has excellent thermal stability (98%@375 K). Time-resolved spectroscopy (77 K) and peak fitting analysis reveal that the broad NIR emission is attributed to the Cr3+ ions occupying the [ScO6] and [ZrO6] sites and forming two luminescent centers. The incorporation of Ce3+ ions into the CYSZA:0.11Cr3+ phopshor further improves the luminescence efficiency, resulting in a significant increase in internal quantum efficiency (IQE) from 66% to 88%. The outstanding properties of CYSZA:Cr3+, Ce3+ phosphors make them promising candidates when combined with blue chips for applications in night vision and non-destructive testing technology.

Abstract:Short-wave infrared emitting phosphors have extensive applications for spectroscopy technology. The near-infrared phosphor NaScP2O7:Cr3+ that we present in this work has a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of approximately 196 nm, which ranges from 700 to 1200 nm. To achieve efficient short-wave infrared, Yb3+ ions were co-doped. The NaScP2O7:Cr3+,Yb3+ material emitted infrared bands with peaks at 970 and 1003 nm upon excitation at450 nm. Benefitting from energy transfer (ET), the light in the 900-1200 nm from Yb3+ is effectively enhanced. Photoluminescence spectra, thermal quenching, and decay curves of Cr3+/Yb3+ single and codoped NaScP2O7 were investigated. An internal quantum yield of 29.6 % wasdemonstrated by the optimized phosphor NaScP2O7:Cr3+,Yb3+. Furthermore, The final fabrication of the short-wave infrared pc-LED was done through the combination of a blue-emitting chip and NaScP2O7:Cr3+,Yb3+ phosphor, thereby showing great promise for real implementations.

Abstract:The broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor converted light emitting diode (NIR pc-LED) has garnered unprecedented attention due to its crucial role in NIR applications. However, there remains a scarcity of efficient broadband NIR luminescence materials capable of emitting NIR light with wavelengths greater than 800 nm. This study reports the synthesis, crystal structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties for double perovskite Sr2ScTaO6:Cr3+ phosphors which exhibit a broadband NIR emission in the 650–1250 nm range, peaking at∼815 nm with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 161 nm. The observed broadband emission arises from two distinct Cr3+ centers, namely Sc3+ and Ta5+ octahedral sites within the Sr2ScTaO6 structure, as demonstrated by luminescence and decay kinetic analysis. A significant enhancement of the thermal stability and a remarkable broadening of the FWHM (from 161 to 275 nm) are achieved by employing Yb3+ co-doping strategy. The efficient energy transfer from Cr3+ to Yb3+ was confirmed through emission and excitation spectra, as well as luminescence decay measurements. Finally, Sr2ScTaO6:Cr3+-Yb3+ phosphor was integrated with a 470 nm blue LED chip to fabricate a NIR pc-LED device, and its potential application in night vision was evaluated.

Abstract:Ultra‐broadband near‐infrared (NIR) emission in the range of 800–1200 nm is achieved by incorporating Cr3+ into a Cs2NaScCl6 single‐crystal matrix. The Cs2NaScCl6:Cr phosphor with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 64.2% and excellent environmental stability shows unique advantages as the NIR light source in applications such as biomedical imaging, non‐destructive testing, and night‐vision devices. Ultra‐broadband near‐infrared (NIR) phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diodes (pc‐LEDs) have great application prospects in research and industrial fields. However, simultaneously achieving highly efficient and ultra‐broad NIR emission in phosphor material remains a challenge. Herein, an ultra‐broadband NIR emission in the range of 800–1200 nm with ultra‐high emission efficiency of up to 64.2% is first achieved by substituting the Sc3+ site in Cs2NaScCl6 perovskite single‐crystal with a Cr3+ ion. By combining the experimental results with first‐principles calculations, an efficient charge transfer sensitization process from host to Cr3+ is found to be the fundamental reason for the ultra‐high NIR emission efficiency. Benefiting from the excellent efficiency and superior chemical resistance to heat and UV radiation, an ultra‐broadband NIR pc‐LED made of this phosphor demonstrates great potential in biomedical imaging, nondestructive testing, and night‐vision devices.

Abstract:The near-infrared phosphor converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) have been broadly used in the fields of night vision, biomedicine, nondestructive testing and food analysis. Over the past few years, many Cr3+ doped NIR phosphorus has been reported. However, the realization of ultra-broad band NIR emission with high quantum efficiency remains a great challenge. Here, we report an ultra-broadband NIR emitting phosphor Li3Sc1.92(PO4)3:0.08Cr3+ with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 240 nm. The reason for the ultra-broad emission band is that the host Li3Sc2(PO4)3 provides two different kinds of ScO6 octahedral sites for Cr3+ ions to occupy. This FWHM is better than most NIR emitting phosphors reported so far. Our research indicates that Li3Sc2(PO4)3:Cr3+ phosphors have great potential in night vision and NIR spectroscopy.

Abstract:With the increasing application demand of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in security, agriculture, medical and other fields, people have been pursuing efficient and intelligent NIR light sources. Herein, Cr3+ doped Ca3Sc2Ge3O12 (CSGG) broadband NIR phosphors were successfully synthesized. Under the excitation of 480 nm, the emission peak of CSGG:Cr3+ locates at 785 nm, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) is 106 nm. Low photoluminescence spectra (7 K and 77 K) support the broadband NIR emission comes from two Cr3+ luminescence centers occupying ScO6 and CaO8 sites, respectively. CSGG:Cr3+ shows excellent thermal stability (97%@100 °C), but low internal quantum efficiency (IQE = 22%). The introduction of Ce3+ leads to the enhancement of IQE from 22% to 61% due to the following two reasons: the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Cr3+ and the lattice distortion which improves the parity forbidden transition of Cr3+. The mechanism of excellent luminescence thermal stability is revealed from perspectives: thermal activation energy, Huang-Rhys factor and thermal ionization effect. Benefiting from the excellent performance of CSGG:Cr3+, Ce3+ NIR phosphors, the combination with blue light chips demonstrates its potential applications in night vision, biological imaging, and nondestructive testing.

Abstract:Near-infrared phosphor-converted light emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are considered as desirable NIR light sources to satisfy current needs owing to their numerous remarkable features. Nevertheless, as an essential component, previously reported NIR phosphors with broadband emission often suffer from inferior efficiency or thermal stability, therefore restricting their use and promotion. Herein, a novel Cr3+-doped garnet phosphor Y2CaScAl3GeO12:Cr3+ (YCSAG:Cr3+) is developed via regulating the near-neighbor coordination polyhedron. Under the excitation of blue light, it exhibits a broadband NIR emission peaking near 800 nm with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) exceeding 150 nm, owing to the increased structural distortion of the octahedron. Particularly, due to the enhanced local structural rigidity induced by lattice shrinkage, the optimal sample achieves a balance of high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of approximately 83% and thermal stability of approximately 90% at 393 K, facilitating its practical application as an NIR light source. Eventually, using the typical YCSAG:0.04Cr3+ phosphor and 450 nm blue LED chip, a high-performance NIR pc-LED device has been manufactured, demonstrating potential applications in anticounterfeiting and night vision.
Trivalent Chromium Ions Doped Fluorides with Both Broad Emission Bandwidth and Excellent Luminescence Thermal Stability

Abstract:Recently, trivalent chromium ion doped phosphors have exhibited significant application potential in broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). However, developing an NIR phosphor with both broad emission bandwidth and excellent luminescence thermal stability is still a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate an NIR phosphor, ScF3:Cr3+, which can fulfill both conditions simultaneously. The prepared phosphors show broadband emission in the range of 700 to 1100 nm, with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 140 nm peaking at 853 nm. These phosphors also demonstrate an excellent luminescence thermal stability (the emission intensity of ScF3:Cr3+ keeps 85.5% at 150 °C compared with the value at room temperature). An NIR pc-LED based on blue LED chips was fabricated and tested. The results show that the NIR pc-LED can yield strong broadband NIR emission. This work not only provides a promising phosphor for the application of NIR pc-LEDs but also has important guiding significance for effect of synthesis conditions on the luminescence properties of Cr3+-doped fluorides.

Abstract:Near-infrared light can be widely used in non-destructive testing, sensing, and night vision. Recently, phosphor-converted LED (pc-LED) based on near-infrared (NIR) phosphor have attracted considerable interest. In this work, tetragonal structured K 3 AlF 6 :Cr 3+ phosphors were synthesized using the co-precipitation method. Cr 3+ ions occupy the octahedral position, and its Dq/B value (the parameter describing the crystal field strength) is calculated to be 2.08, suggesting a weak crystal field. Upon blue light excitation (430 nm), a broadband NIR emission is observed in the range of 650–900 nm, corresponding to the spin-allow 4 T 2 → 4 A 2 transition. Increasing Cr 3+ concentration, red-shift is observed in its NIR emission with the maximum emission intensity at 5 mol% Cr 3+ . Its activation energy ΔE is calculated to be 0.14 eV. Combining with blue InGaN chips, the fabricated NIR pc-LEDs based on K 3 AlF 6 :Cr 3+ phosphor exhibit excellent optoelectronic performance, showing potential applications in biological detection.

Abstract:There has been a lot of interest in trivalent chromium ion-doped phosphors for near-infrared (NIR) luminescence in recent years. Here, trivalent chromium-doped NIR emitting SrGa2Si2O8 phosphors were synthesized. The electronic structure was calculated via density functional theory. Although only [SrO7], [SiO4], and [GaO4] polyhedra were found in the host, we still observe broadband luminescence of Cr3+ in the region of 650–950 nm from octahedra site. Due to the doping of Cr3+, a transformation from [GaO4] tetrahedron rearrange into [CrO6] octahedron was produced. The experimental results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of Cr3+. A systematic study of the photoluminescence properties of SrGa2Si2O8:Cr3+ was conducted. The luminescent intensity of SrGa2Si2O8:0.005Cr3+ at 420 K can be retained at 83.42% compared to 300 K, indicating its high thermal stability. The electroluminescence of the prepared light emitting diode (LED) based on SrGa2Si2O8:Cr3+ and blue LED chip was measured under various currents. The application as a NIR LED light source was demonstrated in human hands.

Abstract:The broadband near-infrared phosphors are feasible to apply in real-time nondestructive examination. In this work, La3Ga5SiO14:Cr3+ phosphors with the broadband near-infrared emission have been synthesized using a solid state reaction method. Their optical characteristics were investigated via the measurements of ultraviolet–visible diffused reflectance and luminescence spectra. The occupations of Cr3+ ions in La3Ga5SiO14 host were inquired by the X-ray absorption near edge structure and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses. The results indicate that Cr3+ ions substitute octahedral and tetrahedral Ga3+ ions in La3Ga5SiO14 host, which results in a sharp emission band coming from the 2Eg → 4A2g transitions of Cr3+ and a wide emission band coming from the 4T2g → 4A2g transitions of Cr3+. The fabricated NIR pc-LED device by combining the synthesized La3Ga5SiO14:0.10Cr3+ phosphor with a blue LED chip indicates that the La3Ga5SiO14:Cr3+ phosphors have potential applications in nondestructive examination.

Abstract:Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) play an important role in nondestructive testing, medical imaging, food analysis, and so on. Broadband NIR phosphors are needed in order to cover the characteristic wavelengths of various matters. In this paper, a NIR phosphor, Sr0.92Mg0.91Al10.1O17 (SMAO):Cr3+, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 12–102 nm is achieved as a function of Cr3+ concentration. Two Cr3+ sites are observed by means of excitation spectra and fluorescence decay curves. The spectral broadening with the increase of Cr3+ concentration is attributed to the increase of occupation ratio on the weak crystal field site by Cr3+. In addition, the difference in thermal stability between 2E and 4T2 is employed to conduct the temperature measurement with a relative sensitivity of 0.43% K–1 at 270 K. A NIR pc-LED is fabricated using SMAO:0.03Cr3+ phosphor combined with a 395 nm LED chip with radiation flux of 2.2 mW@10 mA and 15 mW@100 mA.

Abstract:Cr3+-activated garnet phosphors with broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission have attracted considerable interest due to their high quantum efficiency (QE) and thermal stability for widespread advanced applications. Nevertheless, how to achieve energy-saving broadband NIR phosphors that possess anti-thermal quenching (anti-TQ) without compromising the high QE has yet to be fully addressed. Herein, we report on site reconstruction within the garnet lattice by strategically positioning Sc and Ga atoms into octahedral B sites with a mole ratio of 1 : 1 to produce Gd3ScGa4O12. A reduction in crystal field strength (CFS) is thus induced, leading to a redshift of Cr3+ broadband NIR emission. The inherent rigidity of the structure and the weak electron-phonon coupling (EPC) effect lay the groundwork for a thermally robust broadband NIR phosphor. The combination of bandgap engineering, finely optimizing the 4T2 excited state population, and precise control over the doping concentration contributes a high-performance broadband NIR emission (IQE = 82.75%) with unprecedented anti-TQ such that the NIR emission of Cr3+ even increases to 198% of its room-temperature intensity at 543 K. A prototype broadband NIR pc-LED is encapsulated to deliver an NIR output power of 125.20 mW@900 mA and a wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of 6.88%@30 mA, enabling night vision, noninvasive imaging, and non-destructive detection applications.
