Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising technology for the treatment of textile industry wastewater and energy recovering. In this work, we proposed an environmentally friendly and convenient approach for Fe-N-PPC synthesis, a non-precious metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst and was applied in single-chamber air cathode MFCs. The reduction peak current, exchange current density, maximum power density and internal resistance were investigated by electrochemical analysis. The results suggested that the Fe-N-PPC with the mass ratio of Fe-N:PPC = 2:1 had the most excellent electricity generation performance. Moreover, the morphology, crystalline structure and elemental composition of Fe-N-PPC were explored and the existence of Fe 3 C nanocrystals, Fe-N x active sites and the rod-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) indicated the superior redox property of Fe-N-PPC. The efficiency of established MFCs in generating electricity, utilizing organic substrates and removing Congo Red (CR) were tested. Meanwhile, the identified decolorized products of CR showed that electrons preferentially break the azo bond (-N=N-) of CR and the intermediates included sodium 4-aminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid, 4,4'-diamino biphenyl and 2-(1-Oxopropyl)-benzoic acid. Furthermore, microbial community analysis showed that more amount of the electrogenic bacteria and decolorizing bacteria in MFCs were generated when Fe-N-PPC was used as the cathode catalyst. In general, this study provides an innovative substitute for cathode catalysts in MFCs and the synthesized Fe-N-PPC could be widely employed in engineering owing to its low price and high power generation efficiency.
