Abstract:Photocatalytic H-2 production from H2O is promising for solving the energy and environment problems. Zeolites have been widely used in thermocatalysis, but their application in photocatalysis is limited. Herein, we anchor CdS and Pt nanoparticles on a NaY zeolite (ZP48) fabricated via 48 h crystallization to form a CdS/Pt/ZP48 photocatalyst for visible-light-driven photocatalytic H-2 production from H2O. CdS/Pt/ZP48 shows a H-2 production rate (686.5 lmol h(-1)) which is higher than those on Pt/CdS (263.2 lmol h(-1)) and photocatalysts with zeolite supports prepared by using crystallization times shorter and longer than 48 h, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 23.5% and superior stability. ZP48 promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus releasing more electrons for enhancing the photocatalytic H-2 production on CdS/Pt/ZP48. These results are helpful for fabricating more efficient photocatalysts by zeolites which are widely used in industry but have poor ability in light absorption and charge transfer. Abstract:Zinc indium sulfide materials (ZnxIn2Sx+3, x = 1-5) are known to initiate H-2 production under visible light, among which ZnIn2S4 is the most active with triethanolamine (TEOA) as the sacrificial agent. Herein a new series of ZIS (ZnIn6S10, ZnIn2S4, Zn4In2S7, Zn6In2S9, and Zn11In2S14) have been synthesized via a hydrothermal method. For H-2 production in the presence of TEOA under a 420 nm LED lamp, Zn6In2S9 was not only the most active among the ZIS materials, but also much more active than ZnS, In2S3, and CdS. With the increase of the Zn content, ZIS had an increased band gap, but a negatively shifted flat band potential in aqueous solution. Because of that, Zn6In2S9 was more active than others. Furthermore, after 20 wt% CoS loading, ZIS had a 2.9-6.8 fold increased activity, in terms of the amount of H-2 evolved in 2 h. Through a measurement of proton reduction, open circuit potential, and charge transfer resistance, a possible mechanism is proposed, involving hole transfer from ZIS to CoS, followed by increased TEOA oxidation and proton reduction. This work provides a simple way to modulate the performance of metal chalcogenides for water splitting under visible light.
In Situ Photodeposition of Cobalt Nanoparticles Onto ZnIn2S4 Enhancing H2 Production under Visible Light

Abstract:Hydrogen production via semiconductor photocatalysis has been the subject of extensive research over the past four decades. Recently, much work has focused on ZnIn2S4 (ZIS), due to its ability to initiate water splitting under visible light. In this work, we report a 11-fold increase of H-2 production via Co2+ addition (equivalent to 4 wt% Co on ZIS). Reaction was conducted under a 420 nm LED lamp in presence of triethanolamine. During the photocatalytic reaction, Co2+ ions were quickly reduced into metallic Co. A five-repeat test showed that the in situ Co-0 nanoparticles was relatively stable. By contrast, 4 wt% Co-0 ex situ deposited ZIS via a (photo)chemical or physical route had a low activity, due to partial oxidation of Co-0 into less active CoOx in air. Impressively, all Co deposited ZIS samples were at least 5 times more active than 0.5 wt% Pt-loaded g-C3N4, CdS, ZnS, and In2S3, respectively. Through photoluminescence and (photo)electrochemical measurement, a plausible mechanism is proposed, involving electron transfer from ZIS to Co species, followed by proton reduction. This work shows that cobalt nanoparticles are excellent cocatalysts for H-2 production on ZIS under visible light, but they are better produced in situ without involvement of O-2.
Significantly Increased Production of H2 on ZnIn2S4 under Visible Light Through Co-Deposited CoWO4 and Co3O4

Abstract:Much work has focused on metal chalcogenides as photocatalysts for water splitting. Herein ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) has been deposited with 10 wt% CoWO4, followed by mixing with 3 wt% Co3O4. Reaction was conducted under a 420 nm LED lamp in the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA). In terms of the amounts of H-2 evolved at 2 h (n(H2h)), Co3O4/CoWO4/ZIS, Co3O4/ZIS, and CoWO4/ZIS were more active than ZIS, respectively, by factors of approximately 9.2, 7.0, and 2.5. In addition, Co3O4/CoWO4/ZIS was more photostable than ZIS. The trend for the n(H2h) not only coincided with those for proton reduction and water (TEOA) oxidation on a dark electrode, respectively, but also matched the reduced emission intensity of the solid in ambient air. However, for water oxidation on a photoanode, Co3O4/ZIS was less active than CoWO4/ZIS. Then the larger n(H2h) of Co3O4/ZIS than CoWO4/ZIS is due to Co3O4 being more active than CoWO4 for catalyzing proton reduction. Based on the solid band edge potentials, a possible mechanism is discussed. The photoholes of ZIS recombine with the photoelectrons of Co3O4 (CoWO4), improving the efficiency of charge separation, and hence increasing the rates of proton reduction on ZIS and TEOA oxidation on Co3O4 (CoWO4), respectively. Because of the combined Z-scheme pathways, Co3O4/ CoWO4/ZIS is more photoactive than others.

Abstract:Copper species have been extensively researched as effective cocatalysts for hydrogen evolution because of their inexpensive nature when compared to Pt. In this work, we have successfully loaded Cu nanoparticles highly dispersed on the surface of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) by an always simple low-temperature vacuum reduction method, which significantly improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. According to the transient photocurrent (TPR) and PL results, when the mass fraction of Cu is 0.6%, the maximum photocurrent density is approximately 0.55 mu A/cm2, which is 2.75 times that of ZIS. And the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers is the fastest at this point. Simultaneously, under visible light and with a Cu loading of 0.6% in the Cu/ ZnIn2S4 (Cu/ZIS) composite material, the efficiency of hydrogen production is 6.56 times greater than that of pure ZIS, ultimately achieving an optimal value of 4.66 mmol/g/h. This study provides a new method for the preparation of photocatalysts with a high efficiency of electron-hole separation.

Abstract:Sulfur-substituted In(OH)3 [hereafter denoted as In(OH)ySz] and Zn-doped In(OH)ySz [hereafter denoted as In(OH)ySz:Zn] are synthesized in an aqueous solution of ethylenediamine via the hydrothermal method. The photoactivities of these catalysts for H2 production are investigated in the presence of Na2S and Na2SO3 sacrificial reagent under visible light illumination (λ>420nm). The absorption edge of In(OH)ySz shifted monotonically from 240 nm for In(OH)3 to 570 nm for In(OH)ySz when the atomic ratio of S/In in the synthesis solution is increased from 0 to 2.0. But the absorption edge of In(OH)ySz:Zn shifted from 570 to 470 nm as the atomic ratio of Zn/In in the synthesis solution was increased from 0 to 1.0. The catalyst In(OH)ySz is active for H2 production, with an average rate of H2 of 0.9–1.8 μmol/h, under visible light illumination. The photoactivity of In(OH)ySz is enhanced by doping with Zn2+. The rate of H2 production is 35.8 and 67 μmol/h on 2wt% Pt-loaded In(OH)ySz:Zn catalyst when X=0.2 and 0.5, respectively, corresponding to a quantum efficiency of 0.32 and 0.59% at 420±10nm, respectively.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is recognized as a prospective technology for energy conversion to alleviate the energy shortage. Hence, we propose a convenient method to synthesize two-dimensional (2D) ZnS-propylamine(pa) hybrid complex materials with traditional solvothermal method, demonstrating prominent photocatalytivity under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, the improvement of hydrogen production has been further investigated by controlling different in-situ ultrasonic times. The optimized hydrogen generation obtained from ZnS(pa)x was up to 1828 μmol/g under 4 h visible light irradiation. The high performance could be contributed by the inorganic-organic coordination effect on optimizing the morphology and structure, which enlarge reaction sites and accelerate carriers migration of the material. This work represents an effective approach to promote and optimize the traditional wide bandgap semiconductors for enlarging visible light photocatalytic performances.

Abstract:The band structures of semiconductor photocatalysts fundamentally determine the photocatalytic activity and the H-2 production from the visible-light-driven water-splitting reaction. We synthesize a suite of multicomponent sulfide photocatalysts, (CuAg)(x)In2xZn2(1-2x)S2 (0x0.5), with tunable band gaps and small crystallite sizes to produce H-2 using visible-light irradiation. The band gap of the photocatalysts decreases from 3.47eV to 1.51eV with the increasing x value. The (CuAg)(0.15)In0.3Zn1.4S2 (x=0.15) photocatalyst yielded the highest photocatalytic activity for H-2 production owing to the broad visible-light absorption range and suitable conduction band potential. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the highest H-2 production rate is 230 mu molm(-2)h(-1) with a visible-light irradiation of 2.7x10(-5) einstein cm(-2)s(-1), and the quantum yield reaches 12.8% at 420 +/- 5nm within 24h. Furthermore, the photocatalytic H-2 production is shown to strongly depend on their band structures, which vary with the elemental ratios and could be analyzed by the Nernst relation. Abstract:As photocatalysis technology could transform renewable and clean solar energy into green hydrogen (H2 ) energy through solar water splitting, it is regarded as the "Holy Grail" in chemistry field in the 21st century. Unfortunately, the bottleneck of this technique still lies in the exploration of highly active, cost-effective, and robust photocatalysts. This work reports the design and synthesis of a novel zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) coupled Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S hetero-structured photocatalyst for high-performance visible-light-induced H2 production. State-of-the-art characterizations and theoretical computations disclose that the interfacial electronic interaction between ZIF and Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S, the high distribution of Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S on ZIF, and the atomically dispersed coordinately unsaturated Co sites in ZIF synergistically arouse the significantly improved visible-light photocatalytic H2 production performance.
Controlled Growth Of Zns/Zno Heterojunctions On Porous Biomass Carbons Via One-Step Carbothermal Reduction Enables Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic H-2 Production

Abstract:For visible-light-driven H-2 production, rational design of heterojunction photocatalysts might be a feasible strategy to achieve enhanced H-2 evolution efficiency. Herein, we prepared ZnS/ZnO heterojunctions highly dispersed on porous biomass carbons (ZnS/ZnO@C) through a one-step carbothermal reduction process at elevated temperatures. By means of the proposed synthetic pathway, the ZnS/ZnO@C composites were enabled with visible-light-driven photocatalytic capacity, despite either ZnS or ZnO being catalytically inactive for H-2 production under visible irradiation. The as-prepared photocatalyst with a 1 : 1 mole ratio of zinc and carbon sources at 800 degrees C displayed an optimal H-2 production rate of ca. 37.1 mu mol h(-1) g(-1). TEM images and UV-DRS spectra suggested that the formation of ZnS/ZnO heterojunctions would induce the generation of oxygen defects in ZnO to greatly promote visible light adsorption. Electrochemistry analyses and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra demonstrated that more efficient separation of photo-induced carriers took place via the interfaces of ZnO/ZnS heterojunctions, prolonging the charge separation lifetime. Moreover, porous biomass carbons would serve as electron conductors to efficiently improve the photo-induced electron transfer from the bulk of ZnS/ZnO to surfaces for boosting the reduction of H2O to H-2. The ZnS/ZnO heterojunctions with oxygen defects coupled with porous biomass carbons jointly achieved highly efficient H-2 production under visible irradiation. This work thus provided a facile means by using low-cost porous biomass carbons to design robust and flexible photocatalysts for visible-light-driven H-2 production with high efficiency.

Abstract:Indium zinc sulfide (ZnIn<INF>2</INF>S<INF>4</INF>) has been reported to be highly photoactive for H<INF>2</INF> production with Na<INF>2</INF>S and Na<INF>2</INF>SO<INF>3</INF> as sacrificial reagents, but it still suffers from serious corrosion. In this work, we report an efficient composite of hexagonal ZnIn<INF>2</INF>S<INF>4</INF> microspheres (ZIS) and cerium UiO-66 metal-organic framework (MOF) octahedra, both of which harvest light at wavelengths up to 550 nm. Under a 420 nm LED lamp and in a Na<INF>2</INF>S/Na<INF>2</INF>SO<INF>3</INF> aqueous solution, the amount of H<INF>2</INF> evolved at 2 h (nH<INF>2</INF>h) was negligible for the MOF. After 18, 27, 37, and 47% MOF loading, however, ZIS had an increased n<INF>H<INF>2</INF>h</INF> by factors of approximately 4.8, 5.6, 4.2, and 3.2, respectively. This trend for the n<INF>H<INF>2</INF>h</INF> coincided with that for the efficiency of charge separation, inferred by emission spectroscopy. A five-repeat test for H<INF>2</INF> production showed that ZIS partially decomposed into metallic indium, while MOF/ZIS was much more stable than ZIS. Moreover, for proton reduction or for water photo-oxidation on an electrode, MOF/ZIS was also more active than ZIS, followed by the MOF. According to the measured band parameters, a possible mechanism is proposed, including the electron transfer from ZIS to Ce-U66, and the hole transfer from Ce-U66 to ZIS, which improves the efficiency of charge separation. It is worth noting that 30% Ce-MOF/ZIS is approximately 1.4 times more active than 30% Zr-MOF/ZIS.
Non-precious Metal MoO2 Co-Catalysts Efficiently Enhance Hydrogen Production of ZnIn2S4 under Visible Light

Abstract:Photogenerated electron-hole separation and transfer and band gap modulation are the main reasons for the performance of semiconductor catalysts. These problems can be effectively solved by the proper use of co-catalysts. However, the current co-catalysts are generally noble metal co-catalysts, which cannot be used industrially because of their high cost. Therefore, it is important to use non-noble metal co-catalyst to solve these problems. In this study, MoO2 with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect loaded onto ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) by primary hydrothermal method and structured to form type II hetero-junctions. The formation of the heterojunctions not only tunes the band gap to improve the light absorption intensity, but also reduces the charge transfer resistance and promotes electron-hole directed movement to improve the electron-hole separation efficiency. The tuning of the band gap and the increase in the electron-hole separation rate lead to improved performance of all ZIS/MoO2 heterojunctions under visible light (lambda >= 420 nm). Among them, ZIS/MoO2-4% has the best photocatalytic performance of 2.757 mmol g(-1) h(-1), which is 3.75 times higher than that of pure ZIS (0.736 mmol g(-1)h(-1)). Controlled Deposition of ZnS Nanoparticles on CuS Nanoplates for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic H-2 Production

Abstract:With giving property to guide and control charge carries at the nanoscale, fabrication of heterostructure photocatalyst with desirable spatial distribution has been significantly valued. In this study, by using CuS nanoplates as seeds, CuS@ZnS core-shell heterojunction photocatalysts with diverse morphologies were developed via controlled synthesis kinetics. Kinetic control was completed through manipulation of the injection rate of Zn2+ precursor with a syringe pump as well as the reaction temperature. It is found that the growth is determined by the deposition rate relative to the diffusion rate of the ZnS growth monomers. Specifically, at a high injection rate and a relatively low reaction temperature, ZnS monomers on the surface of the CuS nanoplate will be in a localized manner and tend to form island nanoparticles. On the contrary, when surface diffusion is facilitated at a lower injection rate and a higher reaction temperature, the morphology of the ZnS nanocrystals can be switched to flat ZnS layers covering the surface of CuS. In addition, the heterostructures have found with shape-dependent photocatalytic performance toward H₂ evolution under visiblelight irradiation. The CuS@ZnS core-shell composites that possess ZnS islands exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. The corresponding H₂ generation rate reaches 6.3 μmol h-1 g-1, which is 37.9 times of that for CuS@ZnS core-shell nanostructure with flat surface. This work thus provides a powerful means for the rational design and synthesis of heterojunctions with spatially controlled distribution of the component.
Increased Production of H2 under Visible Light by Packing CdS in a Ti, Zr-Based Metal Organic Framework.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials, and some of them have been used as photocatalysts for H2 production in the presence of Pt and sacrificial reagents. Herein we report a significantly enhanced production of H2 on mixed CdS and MOF, measured under a 420 nm LED lamp in a N2-saturated aqueous solution containing Na2S and Na2SO3. MIL-125-NH2, UiO-66-NH2, and PCN-415-NH2, which are Ti-, Zr-, and Ti, Zr-based MOFs, respectively, were prepared, followed by a two-step precipitation of CdS. All MOFs were nearly not active, but CdS-loaded MOFs were not only active, but also more active than either CdS or Pt/CdS. Moreover, at 40% CdS loading, the MOF activity was PCN-415-NH2 > MIL-125-NH2 > UiO-66-NH2. N2 adsorption showed that CdS nanoparticles were present in the micropores of MOFs. Then the solid photoluminescence, band parameters, and (photo)electrochemical reactions were measured. Accordingly, a possible mechanism is proposed, involving the electron transfer from CdS to PCN-415-NH2, and the hole transfer from PCN-415-NH2 to CdS. In the reaction process, both CdS and MOF act as photocatalysts, other than co-catalysts. This work shows a simply strategy for enhancing H2 production under visible light.
Incorporating a Molecular Co-Catalyst with a Heterogeneous Semiconductor Heterojunction Photocatalyst: Novel Mechanism with Two Electron-Transfer Pathways for Enhanced Solar Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is considered to be a promising solution to the global energy crisis and to environmental pollution caused by fossil fuel consumption. In the present study, a core/shell cadmium sulfide/zinc oxide (ZnO/CdS) semiconductor heterojunction photocatalyst is used with a cobalt salon molecular co-catalyst for highly enhanced photocatalytic activity. CdS nanorods were synthesized using a simple solvothermal method and a ZnO shell was grown by a solution deposition method. Under optimum conditions, the system exhibited a H-2 evolution rate of 725 mu mol h(-1) mg(-1) with a turnover number of similar to 102,700 and excellent stability over 50 h in the presence of Na2S/Na2SO3 as the electron donor under visible light. The highest apparent quantum yield of the system was 44% under monochromatic 420 nm light. The formation of ZnS during photocatalysis was proved due to surface dissolution of ZnO in alkaline sulfide solution. ZnS can enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnO/CdS nanorods by providing increased charge transfer interfaces. The molecular cobalt co-catalyst also contributed to the enhanced activity by accepting the photogenerated electrons from the semiconductor photosensitizer. The proposed mechanism suggests that the photogenerated electrons in CdS are transferred not only to ZnO but also to the molecular co-catalysts, leading to highly improved photocatalytic activity for H-2 production. Abstract:Developing highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts for H2 evolution is intriguing, but their efficiency is subjected to the following three critical issues: limited light absorption, low carrier separation efficiency, and sluggish H2 evolution kinetics. Element surface doping is a feasible strategy to synchronously break through the above limitations. In this study, we prepared a series of Co-surface-doped ZnS photocatalysts to systematically investigate the effects of Co surface doping on photocatalytic activity and electronic structure. The implantation of Co results in the emergence of the impurity level above the valence band (VB) and the upshifted conduction band (CB) and enhances its visible light absorption. Co gradient doping inhibits the combination and facilitates the migration of carriers. S atoms are proven to be reactive active sites for photocatalytic H2 evolution over both ZnS and Co-doped ZnS. Co doping alters the surface electronic structure and decreases the absolute value for the hydrogen binding free energy (ΔGH) of the adsorbed hydrogen atom on the catalyst. As a consequence, Co-surface-doped ZnS shows boosted photocatalytic H2 evolution activity relative to the undoped material. Synergistic Promotion Effect of ZnCoS Solid Solution and Co 1– x S on Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production of the CdS Composite

Abstract:Photocatalytic reactions over effective photocatalysts are attractive to explore clean hydrogen energy from water with the utilization of solar energy. Ternary Co1-xS@ZnCoS/CdS (ZCS/CdS) composites are constructed as photocatalysts through the hydrothermal formation of Co1-xS and ZnCoS nanoparticles on CdS nanorods. Superior to the binary Co1-xS/CdS composite, ZCS/CdS shows the improved photocatalytic activity with a hydrogen production rate of 58.4 mmol·g-1·h-1, which is 31.4 and 2.1 times higher than those of CdS and Co1-xS/CdS, respectively. Different from binary Co1-xS/CdS, the participation of a small amount of zinc favors the formation of ZnCoS solid solution in ZCS/CdS. A synergistic promotion effect of ZnCoS and Co1-xS is confirmed due to tight heterojunctions among Co1-xS, ZnCoS, and CdS in ZCS/CdS. The unique heterostructure of ZCS/CdS benefits its enhanced absorption ability of visible light, accelerating the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and the electron transfer. ZCS/CdS exhibits the strong reduction ability and superior photocatalytic stability due to the role of double Z-scheme electron transfer pathways in the ternary composite. This work provides a suitable way to tune noble metal-free composite photocatalysts for efficient H2 production.

Abstract:A hierarchical Co9S8/N, S-CNTs-ZnIn2S4 (CSCNs-ZIS) composite was reasonably constructed by grafting ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on the ZIF (67) derived Co9S8/N, S-doped carbon nanotubes for effective photocatalytic hydrogen production. The aggregated ZnIn2S4 nanosheets were uniformly wrapped on the surface of CSCNs, forming a hierarchical core-shell configuration, which effective inhibition of charge-carrier recombination. The CSCNs was adopted as an effective multi-component co-catalyst and further promoted photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. The H-2 production rate of optimized CSCNs-ZIS composite reached 2409.2 mu mol center dot h(-1)center dot g(-1) and has high stability after three cycles. This work may inspire the design of a new noble-metal-free multi-component co -catalyst for sustainable H-2 production.

Abstract:The difficulty in fabricating a multifaceted composite heterojunction system based on CdxZn1-xS limits the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. In the present scrutiny, novel ZnO/CdxZn1-xS/CdS composite heterojunctions are successfully prepared by the alkaline dissolution etching method. The internal electric field at the interface of I-type and Z-scheme heterojunction improved the effective charge separation. The ZC 8 sample exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance and the H2 production efficiency is 15.67 mmol g−1 h−1 with good stability up to 82.9% in 24-hour cycles. The performance of CH4 and CO capacity in the CO2RR process is 3.47 μmol g−1 h−1 and 23.5 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. The photogenerated accelerated charge transport is then examined in detail by in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISXPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work presents a new idea for the synthesis of CdxZn1-xS solid-solution-based materials and provides a solid reference for the detailed mechanism regarding the electric field at the heterojunction interface.

Abstract:(CdS)(x)/(ZnS)(1-x) nanoparticles were synthesized as a visible light-driven photocatalyst using the stepped microemulsion technique with a series of the ratio factors (x). The photocatalytic test results showed that (CdS)(x)/(ZnS)(1-x) with x = 0.8 had the highest photo-reactivity for H-2 production from water under visible light. The composite (CdS)(0.8)/(ZnS)(0.2) catalyst had a heterogeneous structure that exhibited a much greater photocatalytic hydrogen production activity than either pure CdS or the homogeneous Cd0.8Zn0.2S solid solution. ZnS deposition also was shown to largely improve the stability of CdS in the heterostructured CdS/ZnS catalyst. Thermal treatment of the catalyst, i.e., annealing (CdS)(0.8)/(ZnS)(0.2) at 723 K, improved the crystallinity of the catalyst and increased its photocatalytic H-2 production rate by more than 36 times. Deposition of Ru on the surface of the catalyst particles by in situ photo-deposition further increased the photo-H-2 generation rate by 3 times. The photocatalyst of 0.5%Ru/CdS/ZnS achieved the highest H-2 production activity, at a rate of 12650 mol/g-h and with a light to hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 6.5%.
