Abstract:Rural hollowing is changing rural landscapes worldwide, but its impacts on large-scale farming are still being debated in the scientific literature. Certain researchers see it as a threat to large-scale farming, whereas others view it as an opportunity for modern agriculture. This paper presents an integrated framework for confronting this issue. We use a case study to exemplify the impacts of rural hollowing on large-scale farming. An assessment of the rural hollowing and efficiency of large-scale farming in Pinggu District showed that both have experienced an increasing tendency from 2005 to 2019. By expanding on the spatial pattern, a positive spatial autocorrelation between them was observed in the region, changing from low-low to high-high, together with the global bivariate Moran's I decreasing from 0.2804 to 0.2178 ( p<0.01 ). Notably, contrasting impacts were recorded in different types of villages based on the farming system. Their relationship in villages practicing efficient agriculture and semi-subsistence agriculture tended to be more consistent, with an almost fourfold increase in high-high spatial clusters, which was explained by the rural exodus, farmland abandonment, and residential vacancy providing crucial preconditions for large-scale farming. However, the impacts differed in villages with leisure agriculture: rural hollowing, especially the low dwelling density and population aging, has trapped large-scale farming in a disadvantaged position, where the high-low spatial outliers were increased by 71.43%. Accordingly, adapting various farming systems may represent an effective way to reverse environmental degradation, which could facilitate the implementation of successful policies aimed at stopping and reversing rural hollowing as well as accelerating large-scale farming.
