Abstract:Polymer based composites with high dielectric constant were successfully fabricated using BaTiO3 nanowires with high aspect ratio as inorganic filler and PVDF-HFP as polymer matrix. PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanoparticles composites were also prepared as a contrast. The BaTiO3 nanowires were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method. The BaTiO3 nanowires and its two types of composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. For the composites, breakdown strength measurements, tensile tests and broadband dielectric spectroscopy analyses were also carried out. The results show that the two types of fillers are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix. The dielectric constant of composites filled by BaTiO3 nanowires is larger than that filled by BaTiO3 nanoparticles at the same content. Stronger interfacial polarization was found in PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites. Two theoretical models were employed to predict the dielectric constants of composites, and the experimental data were consistent with the estimated trend. The enhanced dielectric properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites are attributed to the superior interfacial polarization and high aspect ratio of BaTiO3 nanowires.

Abstract:Dielectric polymer nanocomposites have been attracting increasing attention because of their wide range of applications in electronics industry. To improve their dielectric properties, incorporating conducive fillers and ceramic fillers into the polymer matrix is considered to be an effective solution. Here, Ni nanoparticles (about 50-90 nm) were decorated onto the surface of polydopamine (PDA) coated BaTiO3 nanowires to synthesize Ni@ polydopamine@BaTiO3 nanowires (Ni@PDA@BT NWs, also denoted as NPB) with different Ni loading amount The nanowires were then added into poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) matrix and composite films were prepared. The dielectric performance of composite films is largely enhanced owing to the microcapacitor effect and interfacial polarization effect induced by Ni nanoparticles. This enhancement can be improved by increasing the loading amount of Ni. Crystallization behavior of the films were also investigated. With 20 vol% of Ni@PDA@BT NWs added, the dielectric constant of the composite film reaches 48.4 at 1 kHz, in contrast to 29.5 for 20 vol% of BT and 10.6 for pristine P(VDF-HFP). And the dielectric loss tangent remains at a low level of 0.23 at 1 kHz. These composite films exhibit potential for applications in flexible electronic devices and electrical systems.

Abstract:Polymer dielectric materials are extensively used in electronic devices. To enhance the dielectric constant, ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant have been widely introduced into polymer matrices. However, to obtain high permittivity, a large added amount (>50 vol%) is usually needed. With the aim of improving dielectric properties with low filler content, satellite–core-structured Fe2O3@BaTiO3 (Fe2O3@BT) nanoparticles were fabricated as fillers for a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) matrix. The interfacial polarization effect is increased by Fe2O3 nanoparticles, and thus, composite permittivity is enhanced. Besides, the satellite–core structure prevents Fe2O3 particles from directly contacting each other, so that the dielectric loss remains relatively low. Typically, with 20 vol% Fe2O3@BT nanoparticle fillers, the permittivity of the composite is 31.7 (1 kHz), nearly 1.8 and 3.0 times that of 20 vol% BT composites and pure polymers, respectively. Nanocomposites also achieve high breakdown strength (>150 KV/mm) and low loss tangent (~0.05). Moreover, the composites exhibited excellent flexibility and maintained good dielectric properties after bending. These results demonstrate that composite films possess broad application prospects in flexible electronics.

Abstract:A new ceramic/polymer composite based on BaTiO3@SrTiO3 (BT@ST) nanoparticles and Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) had been prepared. It was proved that the BaTiO3@SrTiO3 nanoparticles were dispersed in the polymer matrix by XRD, SEM, and TEM. At then, effects of inorganic filler content of BT@ST nanoparticles on dielectric behavior, the thermal and physical properties of this composite were discussed. The results showed that the BT@ST/PVDF composite film exhibited a relatively high dielectric constant (ε), low loss tangent (tanδ), and good temperature stability. At the same time, the physical properties and thermal properties of the BT@ST/PVDF composite film remained stable, and this composite would be applied in future electronic devices fields.

Abstract:Core-shell structured BaTiO3@polyaniline (BT@PANI) nanoparticles were synthesized via surface hydroxylation and in-situ polymerization method and were embedded into Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) [P(VDF-HFP)] matrix. The dielectric performance as well as thermal behavior of BT@PANI/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposite films are investigated. The crystallinity increases with increasing the BT@PANI content. Compared with BT particles, the BT@PANI core-shell nanoparticles exhibit notable improvement on dielectric properties. Typically, with a filler content of 20 vol% BT@PANI, the dielectric constant of BT@PANI/P(VDF-HFP) composite film reaches 99.1 at 1 kHz, which is 6.2 times larger than that of 20 vol% BT (16.1) and 9.6 times larger than pristine P(VDF-HFP) (10.3). Enhanced permittivity is generated from the interfacial polarization and the microcapacitor effect provided by the core-shell nanoparticles. Moreover, nanocomposite film maintains a low dielectric loss of 0.21 at 1 kHz. This research offers a solution for fabricating dielectric composite with large dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, which could be beneficial for the improvement of advanced electronic devices.

Abstract:Polymer based dielectric composites were fabricated through incorporation of core-shell structured BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles into PVDF matrix by means of solution blending. Core-shell structured BT nanoparticles with different shell composition and shell thickness were prepared by grafting methacrylate monomer (MMA or TFEMA) onto the surface of BT nanoparticles via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The content of the grafted polymer and the micro-morphology of the core-shell structured BT nanoparticles were investigated by thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The dielectric properties were measured by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The results showed that high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss are successfully realized in the polymer based composites. Moreover, the type of the grafted polymer and its content had different effect on the dielectric constant. In detail, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 16.6% for BT@PMMAI/PVDF and 10.7% for BT@PMMA2/PVDF composite in the range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz, in which the grafted content of PMMA was 5.5% and 8.0%, respectively. However, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 5.5% for BT@PTFEMA1/13VDF and 4.0% for BT@PTFEMA2/PVDF composite, in which the grafted content of PTFEMA was 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively. These attractive features of BT@PTFEMA/PVDF composites suggested that dielectric ceramic fillers modified with fluorinated polymer can be used to prepare high performance composites, especially those with low dielectric loss and high dielectric constant. Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites with the dielectric constant comparable to that of percolative composites are successfully prepared by using core-shell structured hyperbranched aromatic polyamide grafted barium titanate (BT-HBP) hybrid nanofiller. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE-CFE) was used as the polymer matrix because of its high intrinsic dielectric constant and easy processability. The BT-HBP hybrid nanofiller were prepared by a solution polymerization of diaminobenzoic acid on the surface of amino-funcationalized BT nanoparticles. Nuclear magnetic resonance ((1)H NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to verify the chemical structure of the hyperbranched aromatic polyamide and core-shell structure of the hybrid filler, respectively. It was found that the nanocomposite with 40 vol % BaTiO3-HBP had a dielectric constant of 1485.5 at 1000 Hz, whereas the corresponding nanocomposite sample with untreated BaTiO3 only showed a dielectric constant of 206.3. Compared with classic percolative composites, the advantage of the PVDF-TrFE-CFE/BaTiO3-HBP nanocomposites is that the composites show high enough breakdown strength and high dielectric constant simultaneously. An enhanced interfacial polarization mechanism between the BT-HBP and the polymer matrix was suggested for understanding the observed unusually high dielectric constant.

Abstract:The interfaces between nanofillers and the polymer matrix in nanocomposites are known to be increasingly important when nanofillers become smaller .A P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) terpolymer is used as the template polymer matrix and low-K (dielectric constant ) SiO2 and high-K BaTiO3 nanoparticles as fillers to determine the enhancement effect of the interfaces .For both kinds of fillers , anomalous increases in the dielectric constant and polarization response are observed at nanoparticle loading less than 1％( volume fraction) .These increases are not related to the intrinsic dielectric properties of the nanofillers and the change of crystallinity of the terpolymer .The crystalline phase is slightly changed from a non-polar structure towards a more polar one ,improving the dielectric response in the interfacial regions .An interfacial model is proposed and the non-uniform dielectric response of the interfacial regions is responsible for the observed dielectric phenomena .The overlapping of the interfacial regions leads to the maximum dielectric response of the nanocomposites with certain particle loading .

Abstract:Atomic-scale interface engineering in BaTiO3@TO2 nanofibers (TiO2 nano-fibers embedded with BaTiO3 nano-particles) leads to concurrent enhancement of electric displacement and breakdown strength in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. An ultrahigh energy density of ≈20 J cm(-3) is achieved with only 3 vol% nanofibers, which is by far the highest discharged energy density of PVDF-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:The poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based composites with a novel hybrid BaTiO3-graphene nanoplatelets (BTG) as filler were fabricated and their dielectric properties were investigated. The hybrid BTG filler was prepared by a sol-gel process and then sintered at 800 degrees C. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that BaTiO3 nanoparticles with the average diameter in the range of 15 to 20 nm were immobilized on the surface of graphene nanoplatelets. X-ray diffractions indicated that the BaTiO3 nanoparticles were in cubic crystalline. The BTG filled PVDF composites were prepared by solution casting and followed by hot-pressing. These composites showed high epsilon(r) at 100 kHz, e.g., 300 for BTG-1/PVDF, 75 for BTG-2/PVDF and 50 for BTG-3/PVDF. Accordingly, the dielectric loss was 1.1 for BTG-1/PVDF, 1.6 for BTG-2/PVDF, and 0.5 for BTG-3/PVDF at 100 kHz. The percolation value increased with the increasing of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. In detail, f(BTG-1/PVDF) was 3 wt%, f(BTG-2/PVDF) was 4 wt% and f(BTG-3/PVDF) was 5 wt% respectively. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, high aspect ratio TiO2 nanofibers (TiO2 NFs), BaTiO3 nanofibers (BT NFs), CaCu3Ti4O12 nanofibers (CCTO NFs) and 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 nanofibers (BZT-BCT NFs) were prepared via an electrospinning technique. The nanofibers have been modified with polydopamine (PDA), which exhibited excellent dispersion and good compatibility with the polymer matrix. The effects of the structure and morphology of the fillers on the dielectric properties, leakage current density and energy densities of the composites have been also discussed systematically. On comparing the five different poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites, we discovered that the BZT-BCT NFs/PVDF composite displayed low loss, small leakage current and excellent storage performance. On this basis, BZT-BCT NFs/PVDF composites with different volume contents were also fabricated. It can be found that the 7 vol% BZT-BCT NFs/PVDF nanocomposite possessed an excellent dielectric constant (3 similar to 17.6 at 100 Hz). Nevertheless, the 3 vol% BZT-BCT NFs/PVDF nanocomposite demonstrated higher energy storage density (U-e similar to 7.86 J cm(-3)) and greater efficiency (eta similar to 58%) at 310 kV mm(-1). This study may provide a new direction to enhance the energy density of inorganic/PVDF composites.

Abstract:We report enhancement of the dielectric permittivity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) generated by depositing magnetic iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles on the surface of barium titanate (BT) to fabricate BT–Fe 3 O 4 /PVDF composites. This process introduced an external magnetic field and the influences of external magnetic field on dielectric properties of composites were investigated systematically. The composites subjected to magnetic field treatment for 30 min at 60 °C exhibited the largest dielectric permittivity (385 at 100 Hz) when the BT–Fe 3 O 4 concentration is approximately 33 vol.%. The BT–Fe 3 O 4 suppressed the formation of a conducting path in the composite and induced low dielectric loss (0.3) and low conductivity (4.12 × 10 −9 S/cm) in the composite. Series-parallel model suggested that the enhanced dielectric permittivity of BT–Fe 3 O 4 /PVDF composites should arise from the ultrahigh permittivity of BT–Fe 3 O 4 hybrid particles. However, the experimental results of the BT–Fe 3 O 4 /PVDF composites treated by magnetic field agree with percolation theory, which indicates that the enhanced dielectric properties of the BT–Fe 3 O 4 /PVDF composites originate from the interfacial polarization induced by the external magnetic field. This work provides a simple and effective way for preparing nanocomposites with enhanced dielectric properties for use in the electronics industry.
Large Enhancement in Polarization Response and Energy Storage Properties of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) by Improving the Interface Effect in Nanocomposites

Abstract:A novel strategy to improve the interface effect of BaTiO3 (BT)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites is developed to achieve high energy density. The surface of BT is first hydroxylated by H2O2, then modified with a titanate coupling agent DN-101. BT modified with DN-101 is also considered as a control group. Results show that the polarization response of nanocomposites with 10 vol % H2O2-DN-101-BaTiO3 (D-h-BT) is largely enhanced, which is 18% bigger than that of the nanocomposites with 10 vol % DN-101-BaTiO3 (D-BT) at 240 MV m(-1). The dielectric breakdown strength is also improved from 240 MV m(-1) of nanocomposites with 10 vol % D-BT to 260 MV m(-1) of nanocomposites with 10 vol % D-h-BT, which makes the maximum stored energy density increase from 6.5 to 9.01 J cm(-3), and the discharged energy density of the composites improved from 3.01 to 4.31 J cm(-3). The findings based on this research are applicable to various nanofillers and polymer matrix, which provides a simple but effective way for nanocomposites with enhanced dielectric properties in next-generation electric and electronic industry.
High Energy Density Performance of Polymer Nanocomposites Induced by Designed Formation of BaTiO3@sheet-likeTiO2 Hybrid Nanofillers

Abstract:Nanocomposites incorporating inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) within ferroelectric polymeric matrices have great potential for high density energy capacitors, In this strategy, employing the nanostructures with specially designed morphology as fillers would notably improve the energy storage. However, this strategy is extremely challenging and has not been largely explored. Here, the BaTiO3@sheet-likeTiO(2) core shell NPs have been successfully synthesized, and can be well-dispersed into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrices. The nanocomposites with the volume fraction 2.5% BT@TiO2 NPs have higher the electric displacement (6.0 mu m/cm(2)) than that of PVDF films with the 2.5 vol % BaTiO3 (BT) NPs (5.1 mu m/cm(2)) under the same electric field of 350 kV/mm, which is mainly ascribed to the hierarchical interfacical polarization induced by the large surface area of TiO2 sheet assembled on BT NPs in the nanocomposites. Simultaneously, the medium permittivity TiO2 with medium er as a buffer layer between the BT NPs and polymer matrix could minimize the inhomogeneous electric field in the nanocomposites, which results in the enhancement of the breakdown strength (490-kV/mm with 2.5 vol % BT@TiO2 NPs) compared to "pristine PVDF. As a result of a gratifying E-B and D; the energy density of the nanocomposites with 2.5 vol % BT@TiO2 NPs reached 17.6 J/cc.

Abstract:BaTiO3 nanofibers with a large aspect ratio prepared via electrospinning and modified by dopamine were used as dielectric fillers in poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE)-based nanocomposites. Highly flexible polymer nanocomposite films were fabricated via a simple solution-cast method. Enhanced dielectric permittivities were obtained at a low volume fraction of BaTiO3 nanofibers. The breakdown strength of the polymer nanocomposites was also improved, which is favorable for enhanced ferroelectric properties in the nanocomposites. P-r similar to 9.1 mu C cm(-2) was achieved in the nanocomposites with 10.8 vol% BaTiO3 nanofibers. The improved breakdown strength and enhanced ferroelectric properties are attributed to the combined effect of the surface modification by dopamine, the large aspect ratio of the BaTiO3 nanofibers and the improved crystallinity of the polymer nanocomposites induced by the BaTiO3 nanofibers.
