Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:Hydrogen is regarded as a key renewable energy source to meet future energy demands. Moreover, graphene and its derivatives have many advantages, including high electronic conductivity, controllable morphology, and eco-friendliness, etc., which show great promise for electrocatalytic splitting of water to produce hydrogen. This review article highlights recent advances in the synthesis and the applications of graphene-based supported electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, powder-based and self-supporting three-dimensional (3D) electrocatalysts with doped or undoped heteroatom graphene are highlighted. Quantum dot catalysts such as carbon quantum dots, graphene quantum dots, and fullerenes are also included. Different strategies to tune and improve the structural properties and performance of HER electrocatalysts by defect engineering through synthetic approaches are discussed. The relationship between each graphene-based HER electrocatalyst is highlighted. Apart from HER electrocatalysis, the latest advances in water electrolysis by bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and HER performed by multi-doped graphene-based electrocatalysts are also considered. This comprehensive review identifies rational strategies to direct the design and synthesis of high-performance graphene-based electrocatalysts for green and sustainable applications.

Abstract:The production of solar fuel through photocatalytic water splitting and CO2 reduction using photocatalysts has attracted considerable attention owing to the global energy shortage and growing environmental problems. During the past few years, many studies have demonstrated that graphene can markedly enhance the efficiency of photocatalysts for solar-fuel generation because of its unique 2D conjugated structure and electronic properties. Abstract:The global energy shortage and environmental degradation are two major issues of concern in today’s society. The production of renewable energy and the treatment of pollutants are currently the mainstream research directions in the field of photocatalysis. In addition, over the last decade or so, graphene (GR) has been widely used in photocatalysis due to its unique physical and chemical properties, such as its large light-absorption range, high adsorption capacity, large specific surface area, and excellent electronic conductivity. Here, we first introduce the unique properties of graphene, such as its high specific surface area, chemical stability, etc. Then, the basic principles of photocatalytic hydrolysis, pollutant degradation, and the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 are summarized. We then give an overview of the optimization strategies for graphene-based photocatalysis and the latest advances in its application. Finally, we present challenges and perspectives for graphene-based applications in this field in light of recent developments.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, and O-2 evolution is the decisive step owing to the complex four-electrons reaction process. Though many studies have been conducted, it is necessary to systematically summarize and introduce the research on photocatalytic O-2 evolution, and thus a systematic review is needed. First, the corresponding principles about O-2 evolution and some urgently encountered issues based on the fundamentals of photocatalytic water splitting are introduced. Then, several types of classical water oxidation photocatalysts, including TiO2, BiVO4, WO3, alpha-Fe2O3, and some newly developed ones, such as Sillen-Aurivillius perovskites, porphyrins, metal-organic frameworks, etc., are highlighted in detail, in terms of their crystal structures, synthetic approaches, and morphologies. Third, diverse strategies for O-2 evolution activity improvement via enhancing photoabsorption and charge separation are presented, including the cocatalysts loading, heterojunction construction, doping and vacancy formation, and other strategies. Finally, the key challenges and future prospects with regard to photocatalytic O-2 evolution are proposed. The purpose of this review is to provide a timely summary and guideline for the future research works for O-2 evolution.

Abstract:Graphene-based photocatalysts have gained increasing interest as a viable alternate to increase photocatalytic H-2 production performance in converting solar energy into chemical energy. The use of graphene to enhance the efficiency of photocatalysts has been proved due to its unique two-dimensional conjugated structure and electronic properties. In this Perspective, we have summarized the recent significant advances on the design and applications of graphene-based photocatalytic composites. The rational designs for high-performance photocatalysts using graphene-based materials are described. The applications of the new materials in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution are presented. Finally, the ongoing challenges and opportunities for the future development of graphene-based photocatalysts are also proposed.
Synthesis of WO3@Graphene composite for enhanced photocatalytic oxygen evolution from water

Abstract:Nano tungsten oxide (WO3) particles were synthesized on the surface of graphene (GR) sheets by using a simple sonochemical method. The obtained composite, WO3@GR, was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption/desorption analysis, thermo-gravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra measurements. It was found that chemical bonds between the nano WO3 particles and the GR sheets were formed. The average particle size of the WO3 was evidenced to be around 12 nm on the GR sheets. When used as photocatalyst for water splitting, the amount of evolved O-2 from water for the WO3@GR composite with 40 wt% GR inside was twice and 1.8 times as much as that for pure WO3 and mixed-WO3/GR, respectively. The excellent photocatalytic property of the WO3@GR composite is due to the synergistic effects of the combined nano WO3 particles and GR sheets. The sensitization of WO3 by GR enhances the visible light absorption property of WO3@GR. The chemical bonding between WO3 and GR minimizes the interface defects, reducing the recombination of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the GR sheets in the WO3@GR composite enhance electrons transport by providing low resistance conduction pathways, leading to improved photo-conversion efficiency. The methodology opens up a new way of obtaining photoactive GR-semiconductor composites for photodissociating water under visible light.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for renewable and clean energy, highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have attracted great interest in the field of hydrogen energy. In this work, we report a novel strategy to prepare graphene (Gr, rather than graphene oxide)-supported highly efficient catalyst for OER. Gr-supported Co3O4 free-standing nanosheets (Gr@eCo(3)O(4)) are fabricated by electrodeposition. SiO2 is used as a template for co-electrodeposition, and is further etched by alkali. Gr provides large electrochemical surface area and abundant catalytically active sites, as well as enhances the conductivity of Co3O4. Meanwhile, the charge transfer kinetics of OER is improved on Co3O4 electrodeposited on Gr. Gr@eCo(3)O(4) exhibits superior OER performance with a Tafel slope of 45 mV dec(-1) at 10 mA cm(-2).

Abstract:Recently, photocatalytic CO2 reduction for solar fuel production has attracted much attention because of its potential for simultaneously solving energy and global warming problems. Many studies have been conducted to prepare novel and efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction. Graphene, a two-dimensional material, has been increasingly used in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In theory, graphene shows several remarkable properties, including excellent electronic conductivity, good optical transmittance, large specific surface area, and superior chemical stability. Attributing to these advantages, fabrication of graphene-based materials has been known as one of the most feasible strategies to improve the CO2 reduction performance of photocatalysts. This Perspective mainly focuses on the recent important advances in the fabrication and application of graphene-based photocatalysts for CO2 reduction to solar fuels. The existing challenges and difficulties of graphene-based photocatalysts are also discussed for future application.

Abstract:Converting solar energy into fuels/chemicals through photochemical approaches holds significant promise for addressing global energy demands. Currently, semiconductor photocatalysis combined with redox techniques has been intensively researched in pollutant degradation and secondary energy generation owing to its dual advantages of oxidizability and reducibility; however, challenges remain, particularly with improving conversion efficiency. Since graphene's initial introduction in 2004, three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based photocatalysts have garnered considerable attention due to their exceptional properties, such as their large specific surface area, abundant pore structure, diverse surface chemistry, adjustable band gap, and high electrical conductivity. Herein, this review provides an in-depth analysis of the commonly used photocatalysts based on 3D graphene, outlining their construction strategies and recent applications in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, H2 evolution, and CO2 reduction. Additionally, the paper explores the multifaceted roles that 3D graphene plays in enhancing photocatalytic performance. By offering a comprehensive overview, we hope to highlight the potential of 3D graphene as an environmentally beneficial material and to inspire the development of more efficient, versatile graphene-based aerogel photocatalysts for future applications.

Abstract:Graphene-semiconductor nanocomposites,considered as a kind of most promising photocatalysts, have shown remarkable performance and drawn significant attention in the field of photo-driven chemical con-version using solar energy,due to the unique physicochemical properties of graphene.The photocatalytic en-hancement of graphene-based nanocomposites is caused by the reduction of the recombination of electron-hole pairs,the extension of the light absorption range,increase of absorption of light intensity,enhancement of sur-face active sites,and improvement of chemical stability of photocatalysts.Recent progress in the photocatalysis development of graphene-based nanocomposites is highlighted and evaluated,focusing on the applications of graphene-based photocatalysts on solar energy conversion such as water splitting and photoreduction of CO2 into renewable fuels and the mechanism of graphene-enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:TiO2 (P25)–graphene (P25–GR) hybrids were prepared via solvothermal reaction of graphene oxide and P25 using ethanol as solvent. The as-prepared P25–GR nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence emission spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicated that P25–GR nanocomposites possessed enhanced light absorption ability and charge separation efficiency. As photocatalysts, P25–GR hybrids were much better than the bare P25, when they were used in the hydrogen evolution from aqueous methanol solution under Xe-lamp illumination. A significant enhancement in the rate of hydrogen production was achieved through using P25–GR as photocatalysts, comparing to bare P25. The optimum mass ratio of GR to P25 in the hybrids was 0.5wt%. The higher mass ratio of GR in P25–GR would decrease the photocatalytic activity of P25.

Abstract:In recent years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has received much research interest because of its powerful potential applications in tackling many important energy and environmental challenges at a global level in an economically sustainable manner. Due to their unique optical, electrical, and physicochemical properties, various 2D graphene nanosheets-supported semiconductor composite photocatalysts have been widely constructed and applied in different photocatalytic fields. In this review, fundamental mechanisms of heterogeneous photocatalysis, including thermodynamic and kinetics requirements, are first systematically summarized. Then, the photocatalysis-related properties of graphene and its derivatives, and design rules and synthesis methods of graphene-based composites are highlighted. Importantly, different design strategies, including doping and sensitization of semiconductors by graphene, improving electrical conductivity of graphene, increasing eloectrocatalytic active sites on graphene, strengthening interface coupling between semiconductors and graphene, fabricating micro/nano architectures, constructing multi-junction nanocomposites, enhancing photostability of semiconductors, and utilizing the synergistic effect of various modification strategies, are thoroughly summarized. The important applications including photocatalytic pollutant degradation, H<sub>2</sub> production, and CO<sub>2</sub> reduction are also addressed. Through reviewing the significant advances on this topic, it may provide new opportunities for designing highly efficient 2D graphene-based photocatalysts for various applications in photocatalysis and other fields, such as solar cells, thermal catalysis, separation, and purification.
