Abstract:MicroRNA miR-138, which is highly expressed in neurons, represses herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) lytic cycle genes by targeting viral ICP0 messenger RNA, thereby promoting viral latency in mice. We found that overexpressed miR-138 also represses lytic processes independently of ICP0 in murine and human neuronal cells; therefore, we investigated whether miR-138 has targets besides ICP0. Using genome-wide RNA sequencing/photoactivatable ribonucleoside-enhanced crosslinking and immunoprecipitation followed by short interfering RNA knockdown of candidate targets, we identified the host Oct-1 and Foxc1 messenger mRNAs as miR-138's targets, whose gene products are transcription factors important for HSV-1 replication in neuronal cells. OCT-1 has a known role in the initiation of HSV transcription. Overexpression of FOXC1, which was not known to affect HSV-1, promoted HSV-1 replication in murine neurons and ganglia. CRISPR-Cas9 knockout of FOXC1 reduced viral replication, lytic gene expression and miR-138 repression in murine neuronal cells. FOXC1 also collaborated with ICP0 to decrease heterochromatin on viral genes and compensated for the defect of an ICP0-null virus. In summary, miR-138 targets ICP0, Oct-1 and Foxc1 to repress HSV-1 lytic cycle genes and promote epigenetic gene silencing, which together enable favourable conditions for latent infection. Genome-wide RNA sequencing/PAR-CLIP and short interfering RNA knockdown are combined to show that neuronal microRNA miR-138 targets ICP0, Oct-1 and Foxc1 to repress HSV-1 lytic cycle genes and promote epigenetic gene silencing, thereby favouring viral latency.
The Virus-Induced Upregulation of the Mir-183/96/182 Cluster and the FoxO Family Protein Members Are Not Required for Efficient Replication of HSV-1

Abstract:Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) expresses a large number of miRNAs, and their function is still not completely understood. In addition, HSV-1 has been found to deregulate host miRNAs, which adds to the complexity of the regulation of efficient virus replication. In this study, we comprehensively addressed the deregulation of host miRNAs by massive-parallel sequencing. We found that only miRNAs expressed from a single cluster, miR-183/96/182, are reproducibly deregulated during productive infection. These miRNAs are predicted to regulate a great number of potential targets involved in different cellular processes and have only 33 shared targets. Among these, members of the FoxO family of proteins were identified as potential targets for all three miRNAs. However, our study shows that the upregulated miRNAs do not affect the expression of FoxO proteins, moreover, these proteins were upregulated in HSV-1 infection. Furthermore, we show that the individual FoxO proteins are not required for efficient HSV-1 replication. Taken together, our results indicate a complex and redundant response of infected cells to the virus infection that is efficiently inhibited by the virus.

Abstract:After infecting peripheral sites, herpes simplex virus (HSV) invades the nervous system and initiates latent infection in sensory neurons. Establishment and maintenance of HSV latency require host survival, and entail repression of productive cycle (“lytic”) viral gene expression. We find that a neuron-specific microRNA, miR-138, represses expression of ICP0, a viral transactivator of lytic gene expression. A mutant HSV-1 (M138) with disrupted miR-138 target sites in ICP0 mRNA exhibits enhanced expression of ICP0 and other lytic proteins in infected neuronal cells in culture. Following corneal inoculation, M138-infected mice have higher levels of ICP0 and lytic transcripts in trigeminal ganglia during establishment of latency, and exhibit increased mortality and encephalitis symptoms. After full establishment of latency, the fraction of trigeminal ganglia harboring detectable lytic transcripts is greater in M138-infected mice. Thus, miR-138 is a neuronal factor that represses HSV-1 lytic gene expression, promoting host survival and viral latency.
Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Lytic Infection Blocks MicroRNA (miRNA) Biogenesis at the Stage of Nuclear Export of Pre-miRNAs.

Abstract:Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) switches between two infection programs, productive ("lytic") and latent infection. Some HSV-1 microRNAs (miRNAs) have been hypothesized to help control this switch, and yet little is known about regulation of their expression. Using Northern blot analyses, we found that, despite inherent differences in biogenesis efficiency among six HSV-1 miRNAs, all six exhibited high pre-miRNA/miRNA ratios during lytic infection of different cell lines and, when detectable, in acutely infected mouse trigeminal ganglia. In contrast, considerably lower ratios were observed in latently infected ganglia and in cells transduced with lentiviral vectors expressing the miRNAs, suggesting that HSV-1 lytic infection blocks miRNA biogenesis. This phenomenon is not specific to viral miRNAs, as a host miRNA expressed from recombinant HSV-1 also exhibited high pre-miRNA/miRNA ratios late during lytic infection. The levels of most of the mature miRNAs remained stable during infection in the presence of actinomycin D, indicating that the high ratios are due to inefficient pre-miRNA conversion to miRNA. Cellular fractionation experiments showed that late (but not early) during infection, pre-miRNAs were enriched in the nucleus and depleted in the cytoplasm, indicating that nuclear export was blocked. A mutation eliminating ICP27 expression or addition of acyclovir reduced pre-miRNA/miRNA ratios, but mutations drastically reducing Us11 expression did not. Thus, HSV-1 lytic infection inhibits miRNA biogenesis at the step of nuclear export and does so in an ICP27-and viral DNA synthesis-dependent manner. This mechanism may benefit the virus by reducing expression of repressive miRNAs during lytic infection while permitting elevated expression during latency. IMPORTANCE Various mechanisms have been identified by which viruses target host small RNA biogenesis pathways to achieve optimal infection outcomes. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is a ubiquitous human pathogen whose successful persistence in the host entails both productive ("lytic") and latent infection. Although many HSV-1 miRNAs have been discovered and some are thought to help control the lytic/latent switch, little is known about regulation of their biogenesis. By characterizing expression of both pre-miRNAs and mature miRNAs under various conditions, this study revealed striking differences in miRNA biogenesis between lytic and latent infection and uncovered a regulatory mechanism that blocks pre-miRNA nuclear export and is dependent on viral protein ICP27 and viral DNA synthesis. This mechanism represents a new virus-host interaction that could limit the repressive effects of HSV-1 miRNAs hypothesized to promote latency and may shed light on the regulation of miRNA nuclear export, which has been relatively unexplored.

Abstract:Human herpesviruses (HHV) are ubiquitous, linear dsDNA viruses that establish lifelong latency, disrupted by sporadic reactivation. HHV have evolved diverse ingenious mechanisms to evade robust host defenses. Incorporation of unique stem loop sequences that generate viral microRNAs (v-miRs) exemplifies one such evolutionary adaptation in HHV. These noncoding RNAs can control cellular and viral transcriptomes highlighting their ability in shaping host-HHV interactions. We summarize recent developments in functional characterization of HHV-encoded miRNAs in shaping the outcome of host-pathogen interaction. Non-immunogenic dissemination of v-miRs through exosomes confer added advantage to HHV in incessant modulation of host microenvironment. This review delineates the mechanistic role of v-miRs in facilitating viral persistence and tropism by targeting genes associated with cellular (apoptosis, angiogenesis, cell migration, etc.) and viral life cycle (latency, lytic and reactivation). Burgeoning evidences indicate plausible association of v-miRs in various immune-mediated diseases (nasopharyngeal carcinoma, neurological disorders, periodontal diseases, etc.) and herpesvirus-related malignancies indicating their broad-spectrum impact on host cellular pathways. We propose to exploit tisssue and systemic levels of v-miRs as diagnostic and prognostic markers for cancers and immune-mediated diseases. Therapeutic targeting of v-miRs will advance the promising outcomes of preclinical discoveries to bedside application.
Neuronal Mir-138 Represses HSV-2 Lytic Infection by Regulating Viral and Host Genes with Mechanistic Differences from HSV-1

Abstract:Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) establishes latent infection in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons after productive (lytic) infection in peripheral tissues. A neuron-specific microRNA, miR-138, favors HSV-1 latency by repressing viral ICP0 , and host Oct-1 and Foxc1 genes, yet the role of miR-138 in HSV-2 infection was unknown. The ICP0 mRNAs of HSV-1, HSV-2 and chimpanzee herpesvirus each have one to two canonical miR-138 binding sites. The sites are 100% conserved in 308 HSV-1 and 300 HSV-2 published sequences of clinical isolates. In co-transfection assays, miR-138 repressed HSV-2 ICP0 expression through the seed region and surrounding interactions that are different from HSV-1. An HSV-2 mutant with disrupted miR-138 binding sites on ICP0 showed increased ICP0 expression in Neuro-2a cells. Photoactivatable ribonucleoside-enhanced crosslinking and immunoprecipitation confirmed miR-138 binding to HSV-2 ICP0 , and identified UL19 and UL20 as additional targets, whose expression was repressed by miR-138 during co-transfection. In Neuro-2a cells, transfected miR-138 and its antagomir decreased and increased HSV-2 replication, respectively, and knockout experiment showed that miR-138’s host targets OCT-1 and FOXC1 were important for HSV-2 replication. In primary mouse DRG neurons, both ICP0 and FOXC1 positively regulated HSV-2 replication, but both overexpressed and endogenous miR-138 suppressed HSV-2 replication primarily by repressing ICP0 expression. Thus, miR-138 can suppress HSV-2 neuronal replication through multiple viral and host pathways. These results reveal functional similarities and mechanistic differences in how miR-138 regulates HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection and indicate an evolutionary advantage of using miR-138 to repress lytic infection in neurons. Importance Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and HSV-2 are closely related viruses with major differences. Both viruses establish latency in neurons from which they reactivate to cause disease. A key aspect of HSV latency is repression of productive infection in neurons. Based on previous work with HSV-1, we investigated the role of a neuron-specific microRNA, miR-138, in HSV-2 infection, and established it as a repressor of HSV-2 productive infection in neuronal cells. This repression is mediated mainly by targeting viral ICP0 and host Foxc1 mRNAs, but other pathways also contribute. Despite functional conservation of the role of miR-138 between HSV-1 and HSV-2, many molecular mechanisms differ including how miR-138 represses ICP0 expression and miR-138 targeting of HSV-2 but not HSV-1 UL19 and UL20 . To our knowledge, this study provides the first example of host microRNA regulation of HSV-2 infection.

Abstract:Background/Aims: The main obstacle to cure HIV infection is the existence of long-lasting latent reservoirs. Many efforts have been made to understand basal mechanisms of HIV-1 latency, in which miRNAs play an important role. However, integrated analysis of miRNA and mRNA expression in HIV-1 latency is lacking. Methods and Results: Global miRNA and mRNA expression was determined by microarrays and quantitative reverse transcription PCR in well-characterized HIV-1 latently and actively infected cells, respectively. Interactions of miRNA-mRNA, mRNA-mRNA, and transcription factor-miRNA pairs were assembled into the function network. Our results show that transcription regulation related genes were mostly enriched in HIV-1 latently infected cells. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed nuclear transport related pathways were up-regulated in the latency group. Network dynamic analysis highlighted many gene-pairs sharing the largest changes in different HIV-1 infection state. 83.33% miRNA-target pairs were validated against database, and RHOB related genes constitute the interface between HIV-1 latency and replication state. Conclusion: We show for the first time a joint miRNA and mRNA expression profile related to a HIV-1 latency phenotype, outline a dynamic network of potential regulators involving in HIV-1 latency or replication state, and gain new insights into the source messages for affecting HIV-1 latency.
Viral miRNAs Alter Host Cell miRNA Profiles and Modulate Innate Immune Responses

Abstract:Prevalence of the members of herpesvirus family in oral inflammatory diseases is increasingly acknowledged suggesting their likely role as an etiological factor. However, the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. In our recent miRNA profiling of healthy and diseased human tooth pulps, elevated expression of human herpesvirus encoded viral microRNAs (v-miRs) were identified. Based on the fold induction and significance values, we selected three v-miRs namely miR-K12-3-3p [Kaposi sarcoma-associated virus (KSHV)], miR-H1 [herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1)], and miR-UL-70-3p [human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)] to further examine their impact on host cellular functions. We examined their impact on cellular miRNA profiles of primary human oral keratinocytes (HOK). Our results show differential expression of several host miRNAs in v-miR-transfected HOK. High levels of v-miRs were detected in exosomes derived from v-miR transfected HOK as well as the KSHV-infected cell lines. We show that HOK-derived exosomes release their contents into macrophages (Mφ) and alter expression of endogenous miRNAs. Concurrent expression analysis of precursor (pre)-miRNA and mature miRNA suggest transcriptional or posttranscriptional impact of v-miRs on the cellular miRNAs. Employing bioinformatics, we predicted several pathways targeted by deregulated cellular miRNAs that include cytoskeletal organization, endocytosis, and cellular signaling. We validated three novel targets of miR-K12-3-3p and miR-H1 that are involved in endocytic and intracellular trafficking pathways. To evaluate the functional consequence of this regulation, we performed phagocytic uptake of labeled bacteria and noticed significant attenuation in miR-H1 and miR-K12-3-3p but not miR-UL70-3p transfected primary human Mφ. Multiple cytokine analysis of <i>E. coli</i> challenged Mφ revealed marked reduction of secreted cytokine levels with important roles in innate and adaptive immune responses suggesting a role of v-miRs in immune subversion. Our findings reveal that oral disease associated v-miRs can dysregulate functions of key host cells that shape oral mucosal immunity thus exacerbating disease severity and progression.

Abstract:MicroRNAs are potent gene expression regulators involved in regulating various biological processes, including host-pathogen interactions. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing to investigate cellular miRNA signatures related to HIV-1 replication and latent infection in CD4+ T cell lines, which included HIV-1-replicating H9/HTLV-IIIB, HIV-1-latently-infected CEM-Bru cells, and their parental uninfected H9 and CEM-SS cells. Relatively few miRNAs were found to be modulated by HIV-1 replication or latent infection, while the cell-lineage-specific miRNA difference was more pronounced, irrespective of HIV-1 infection. In silico analysis showed that some of our HIV-1 infection-regulated miRNA profiles echoed previous studies, while others were novel. In addition, some of the miRNAs that were differentially expressed between the productively and latently infected cells seemed to participate in shaping the differential infection state. Thus, the newly identified miRNA profiles related to HIV-1 replication and latency provide information about the interplay between HIV-1 and its host.

Abstract:MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are the recently discovered small non-coding RNA molecules that have post-transcriptional regulatory functions in many important biological processes. A large number of miRNAs have been found to be encoded by viral genomes, especially in herpesviruses. Previous research regarding miRNAs encoded by herpesviruses, including Marek's disease virus (MDV), has demonstrated their involvement in lytic replication, latent infection, T-lymphocyte transformation and tumorigenesis. MDV is an oncogenic alphaherpesvirus, with the ability to induce tumors in natural hosts; however, formation of these tumors can be prevented by immunization with attenuated or nonpathogenic forms of the virus. Marek's disease is considered to be a good biomedical model for investigating the biology, genetics, and immunology of tumorigenesis. In this paper, we review the discovery and identification of MDV-encoded miRNAs, along with their genomics, expression profiles, and currently known functions. We also discuss the prospects and techniques possibly applicable to the further investigation of the biological roles of MDV-encoded miRNAs.

Abstract:Herpesviruses are ubiquitous human pathogens. After productive (lytic) infection, all human herpesviruses are able to establish life-long latent infection and reactivate from it. Latent infection entails suppression of viral replication, maintenance of the viral genome in infected cells, and the ability to reactivate. Most human herpesviruses encode microRNAs (miRNAs) that regulate these processes during latency. Meanwhile, cellular miRNAs are hijacked by herpesviruses to participate in these processes. The viral or cellular miRNAs either directly target viral transcripts or indirectly affect viral infection through host pathways. These findings shed light on the molecular determinants that control the lytic-latent switch and may lead to novel therapeutics targeting latent infection. We discuss the multiple mechanisms by which miRNAs regulate herpesvirus latency, focusing on the patterns in these mechanisms.

Abstract:Infection with herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) brings numerous changes in cellular gene expression. Levels of most host mRNAs are reduced, limiting synthesis of host proteins, especially those involved in antiviral defenses. The impact of HSV-1 on host microRNAs (miRNAs), an extensive network of short non-coding RNAs that regulate mRNA stability/translation, remains largely unexplored. Here we show that transcription of the miR-183 cluster (miR-183, miR-96, and miR-182) is selectively induced by HSV-1 during productive infection of primary fibroblasts and neurons. ICP0, a viral E3 ubiquitin ligase expressed as an immediate-early protein, is both necessary and sufficient for this induction. Nuclear exclusion of ICP0 or removal of the RING (really interesting new gene) finger domain that is required for E3 ligase activity prevents induction. ICP0 promotes the degradation of numerous host proteins and for the most part, the downstream consequences are unknown. Induction of the miR-183 cluster can be mimicked by depletion of host transcriptional repressors zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1)/-crystallin enhancer binding factor 1 (δEF1) and zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 2 (ZEB2)/Smad-interacting protein 1 (SIP1), which we establish as new substrates for ICP0-mediated degradation. Thus, HSV-1 selectively stimulates expression of the miR-183 cluster by ICP0-mediated degradation of ZEB transcriptional repressors.
Micrornas Are Biomarkers of Oncogenic Human Papillomavirus Infections

Abstract:Cellular and viral microRNAs (miRNAs) are the transcriptional products of RNA polymerase II and are regulated by transcriptional factors for their differential expression. The altered expression of miRNAs in many cancer types has been explored as a marker for possible diagnosis and therapy. We report in this study that oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPVs) induce aberrant expression of many cellular miRNAs and that HPV18 infection produces no detectable viral miRNA. Thirteen abundant host miRNAs were specifically regulated by HPV16 and HPV18 in organotypic raft cultures of foreskin and vaginal keratinocytes as determined by miRNA array in combination with small RNA sequencing. The increase of miR-16, miR-25, miR-92a, and miR-378 and the decrease of miR-22, miR-27a, miR-29a, and miR-100 could be attributed to viral oncoprotein E6, E7, or both, all of which are known to target many cellular transcription factors. The examination of 158 cervical specimens, including 38 normal, 52 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and 68 cervical cancer (CC) tissues, for the expression of these eight miRNAs showed a remarkable increase of miR-25, miR-92a, and miR-378 with lesion progression but no obvious change of miR-22, miR-29a, and miR-100 among the HPV-infected tissues. Further analyses indicate that an expression ratio ≥1.5 of miR-25/92a group over miR-22/29a group could serve as a cutoff value to distinguish normal cervix from CIN and from CIN to CC.
Selective inhibition of miRNA processing by a herpesvirus-encoded miRNA

Abstract:Viral microRNAs are one component of the RNA interference phenomenon generated during viral infection. They were first identified in the Herpesviridae family, where they were found to regulate viral mRNA translation. In addition, prior work has suggested that Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is capable of regulating cellular gene transcription by miRNA. We demonstrate that a miRNA, hsv1-mir-H27, encoded within the genome of herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), targets the mRNA of the cellular transcriptional repressor Kelch-like 24 (KLHL24) that inhibits transcriptional efficiency of viral immediate-early and early genes. The viral miRNA is able to block the expression of KLHL24 in cells infected by HSV-1. Our discovery reveals an effective viral strategy for evading host cell defenses and supporting the efficient replication and proliferation of HSV-1.

Abstract:Background: During its latent infection, hepatic stellate cell (HSV-1) produces only a micro RNA (miRNA) precursor called latency-associated transcript (LAT), which encodes six distinct miRNAs. Recent studies have suggested that some of these miRNAs could target cellular mRNAs. One of the key cell signaling pathways that can be affected by HSV-1 is the TGF-β/Smad pathway. Herein, we investigated the potential role of the LAT as well as three LAT-derived miRNAs in targeting SMAD3 and SMAD4, as two main mediators in TGF-β/Smad. Methods: The selection of LAT-derived miRNAs was based on the search results obtained from an online miRNA prediction tool. HEK293T cells were transfected with each miRNA-expressing lentivector and with the construct-expressing LAT. To survey the effect of LAT on the expression of pro-fibrotic markers, we transfected LX-2 cells with LAT construct. The impact of viral miRNA overexpression on SMADs and fibrotic markers was measured by quantitative PCR and luciferase assays. Results: Among the LAT-derived miRNAs, miR-H2, miR-H3, and miR-H4 were selected for the study. Our results demonstrated that while miR-H2 binds to both SMAD mRNAs, miR-H3 and miR-H4 inhibit only the expression of the SMAD4 and SMAD3, respectively. Transfection of the LX-2 with LAT also decreased pro-fibrotic genes expression. Conclusion: Our findings display that LAT negatively regulates TGF-β/Smad through targeting SMAD3 and SMAD4 by its miRNAs. These viral miRNAs can also contribute to the development of therapeutic interventions in diseases for which prevention or treatment can be achieved through targeting TGF-β pathway.

Abstract:microRNA (miRNA ) is a class of small non‐coding RNA with the length of 18‐25 nucleotides , which plays an important role in regulating posttranscriptional level gene expression through binding to 3′‐untranslated region (UTR) of mRNA .Given its involvement in the development of various human diseases , miRNAs are emerging as a new generation biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis , as well as novel therapeutic targets . The disease progression of human immunodeficiency virus ( HIV )/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) might be modified by miRNA through the regulation of viral replication or host immune responses induced by HIV‐1 infection .Here ,the progresses on host miRNAs as potential biomarkers for disease progression in HIV‐1 infection ,as well as potential targets for antiretroviral therapy are reviewed in the present paper .

Abstract:Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) including high-risk (HR) and low-risk (LR) subtypes have distinguishable variation on both genotypes and phenotypes. The co-infection of multiple HR-HPVs, headed by HPV16, is common in cervical cancer in female. Recently accumulating reports have focused on the interaction between virus and host, particularly the role of human microRNAs (miRNAs) in anti-viral defense by targeting viral genome. Here, we found a well-conserved target site of miRNAs in the genomes of most HR-HPVs, not LR-HPVs, by scanning all potential target sites of human miRNAs on 24 HPVs of unambiguous subtypes of risk. The site is targeted by two less common human miRNAs, miR-875 and miR-3144, and is located in E6 oncogene open reading frame (ORF) and overlap with the first alternative splice exon of viral early transcripts. In validation tests, miR-875 and miR-3144 were identified to suppress the target reporter activity markedly and inhibit the expression of both synthetically exogenous E6 and endogenous E6 oncogene. High level of two miRNAs can inhibit cell growth and promote apoptosis in HPV16-positive cervical cancer cells. This study provides a promising common target of miRNAs for most HR-HPVs and highlights the effects of two low expressed human miRNAs on tumour suppression.

Abstract:Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) preferentially targets neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in congenitally infected fetal brains, inducing neurodevelopmental disorders. While HCMV expresses several microRNAs (miRNAs) during infection, their roles in NPC infection are unclear. Here, we characterized expression of cellular and viral miRNAs in HCMV‐infected NPCs during early infection by microarray and identified seven differentially expressed cellular miRNAs and six significantly upregulated HCMV miRNAs. Deep learning approaches were used to identify potential targets of significantly upregulated HCMV miRNAs against differentially expressed cellular mRNAs, and the associations with miRNA‐mRNA expression changes were observed. Gene ontology enrichment analysis indicated cellular gene targets were significantly enriched in pathways involved in neurodevelopment and cell‐cycle processes. Viral modulation of selected miRNAs and cellular gene targets involved in neurodevelopmental processes were further validated by qRT‐PCR. Finally, a predicted 3' UTR target site of hcmv‐miR‐US25‐1 in Jag1, a factor important for neurogenesis, was confirmed by mutagenesis. Reduction of Jag1 RNA and protein levels in NPCs was observed in response to transient expression of hcmv‐miR‐US25‐1. A hcmv‐miR‐US25‐1 mutant virus (ΔmiR‐US25) displayed limited ability to downregulate Jag1 mRNA levels and protein levels during the early infection stage compared with the wild type virus. Our collective experimental and computational investigation of miRNAs and cellular mRNAs expression in HCMV‐infected NPCs yields new insights into the roles of viral miRNAs in regulating NPC fate and their contributions to HCMV neuropathogenesis.This article is protected by copyright.
