Abstract:Objectives:To explore the mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between attitudinal familism and self-management among people with type 2 diabetes (T 2DM). Methods:A convenience sample of 210 adults with T2DM from Jimenli community health center in Beijing were surveyed, using Attitudinal Familism Scale, Self-efficacy Scale for Patients with T 2DM and Diabetes Self-management Scale. Results:The average score of Attitudinal Familism Scale was (147.10±14.60). Familism was not correlated with self-management behaviors ( P>0.05), while self-efficacy was positively correlated with familism and self-management behaviors ( P< 0.01). The total effect coefficient of familism on self-management behaviors was 0.00, the direct effect was -0.17, and the indirect effect through self-efficacy was 0.17(SE=0.04, Z=3.98, P<0.001). Conclusions:Attitudinal familism among people with T 2DM is consistent with the cultural background of our country. Self-efficacy partly mediated the relationship between attitudinal familism and diabetes self-management behaviors. For those who are with strong familism, medical staff should encourage them to adhere to diabetes self-management behaviors for the purpose of better fulfilling family responsibilities. Meanwhile, future interventions should consider improve self-efficacy to enhance diabetes self-management behaviors.
