Abstract:Culture-specific Chinese-styled branding as a rising trend in cultural and branding studies has provided new discourse for the discussion on the national identity of Chineseness or chinoiserie that has long existed, with further reflections on the Chinese fashion brand design known as ‘Guochao’, which has become an increasingly ubiquitous new conceptual identity in the past five years. Chinese fashion brands are changing their peripheral cultural status and impacting global fashion, transforming the global recognition of Chinese national identity and style in the field of fashion. This article investigates this emerging phenomenon in the global fashion system and theorizes ‘Guochao’ as a rising cultural identity that reconfigures and readdresses the national identity in Chinese fashion branding practices in terms of its connotations and industry applications. It shows that the ‘Guochao’ identity can be separated into two sub-connotations: one that addresses the connotations of ‘Guo’ that symbolize, rejuvenate and rematerialize Chinese historical and material culture, and one that emphasizes the ‘Chao’ discourse, featuring subtle Chinese symbolism that incorporates strong western street style and further blurs the boundaries in the West‐East aesthetic binary system. Through case studies on the brand designs and campaigns of two Chinese designer brands that are paradigmatic of the ‘Guo’ identity, Angel Chen and MUKZIN, and two classic Chinese sportswear brands that are representatives of the ‘Chao’ identity, Li-Ning and Warrior Shanghai, the theoretical connotations of ‘Guochao’ as a rising cultural identity in Chinese-styled branding are discussed. This article theorizes ‘Guochao’ as a recreated representative cultural identity in global fashion that challenges the world’s understanding of chinoiserie in the field of fashion and further showcases the popularization of Chinese-styled branding in Chinese fashion.

Abstract:This paper proposes that cultural hybridity presents an important way of synthesizing the study of culture and communication in the context of globalization. It explores the historical development of rap and hip-hop as translocal cultural forms, that have their roots in U.S. African-American culture, but have been adapted in multiple 'translocal' contexts around the world. It takes the highly successful Chinese online entertainment program The Rap of China as a case study in how such a 'foreign' cultural form is adapted and modified in a distinctive political, cultural and media context, and how streaming services such as iQIYI are carrying new and innovative cultural product. It also notes tensions that surround rap and hip-hop in China, particularly around forms of cultural expression, the aspirations of young Chinese, the desire to reach international markets with Chinese television product, and the ambivalent stance of the agencies of the Chinese party-state towards it.

Abstract:Wang Ning holds that as a product of postmodern consumer society, consumer culture distinguishes itself apparently with the elitist modern culture. While some of its elegant products may well become elite cultural products, more will be out of fashion along with the elapse of time. Wang Yichuan insists that consumer culture in contemporary China does not simply follow what Featherstone called the thoroughfare of "commodity world and its structuralization," instead, due to the intricate functioning of its multiple elements, it represents a displaced and time twisted dilemma: a consumer spoiled hot body and a critically reflective mind. To Bao Yarning, however, the logic of consumerism not only becomes the logic of our social space operation, but also the cultural logic dominating the daily life. Finally, Lu Yang tries to illustrate that while the cultural Americanization grows to be the core issue each nation faces, it will be a too naive resolution to dismiss it as a damned consumerism purely stimulated by multiple images, or sound and furry exactly.

Abstract:China has emerged as one of the largest global markets for luxury goods (Millward Brown/Lightspeed Research, 2014; Yu, 2014). The growing research literature on branding in China reflects this growth (for example, Melewar et al, 2006; Cayla and Eckhardt, 2008; Eckhardt and Houston, 2008; Li et al, 2012; Yu, 2012; Zhan and He, 2012; Walley and Li, 2014). However, few papers have focused on efforts to build Chinese luxury brands from within China (for example, Chevalier and Lu, 2010). In addressing this lack, we have turned our attention to two Chinese luxury brands, Shanghai Tang and Shang Xia, which offer insights into brand development and consumer response within China. Shanghai Tang and Shang Xia were launched in collaboration with leading European luxury brands, but nevertheless are generally recognised as Chinese brands, and they each promote distinct aspects of Chinese aesthetics, culture and values in their marketing and retail strategy.

Abstract:Shows how child‐centred marketing in China has gradually developed, using an example the traditional hero figure Wukong, who now appears and behaves in a far more child‐friendly way than before. Uses child‐centred qualitative research, including drawings, play and photography, as well as interviews with parents and children, to assess trends among Chinese children and youth. Finds that gender is important in children’s choice of toys and games, especially for boys, and that empowerment is a dominant theme in their choice, and also in their aspirations for employment; they are curious, and wish to be successful, powerful and popular. Moves on to young people, finding that peer group pressures are their strongest influences and spending time with friends their favourite leisure activity; they appear to put the individual ahead of the family and to value self‐actualisation over external recognition, in strong contrast to traditional Chinese culture. Finishes with what counts as cool in China: this is a mix of western and traditional Chinese values, with sporting ability and competence scoring high, but musical tastes were for Chinese rather than international artists.
Guochao music and new Chinese identities: Gender, generation, and nation

Abstract:Guochao ( 国潮 ) is used to describe a type of ‘Chinese chic’ that values Chinese brand clothing and consumer products incorporating traditional Chinese and international stylistic elements. It is associated with a young generation embracing aspects of traditional Chinese culture and global styles, whilst selectively following foreign trends, whether from the ‘west’ (North America and Europe) or the ‘east’ (South Korea and Japan). Guochao music has been promoted at festivals, on albums, across social media, in performances, and in variety and talent shows. It is a hybrid style that creates musical dialogues linking traditional Chinese forms, practices, and instrumentation, with international pop music, particularly electronic dance music (EDM) and hip hop. Although allowing imaginative musical mixtures, guochao has been adopted to re-assert a dominant masculine identity, apparent on variety shows ‘Guochao music of China’ ( 中国潮音 ) and ‘Young Man of Chinese National Style’ ( 国风美少年 ), that marginalize female singers/ musicians. This paper interrogates the gendered, generational and nationalistic dynamics of guochao music by drawing from research on netizens of major platforms, analysis of variety shows, albums covers and tracks, and an investigation of music industry practices.

Abstract:Dramatic changes have occurred in Chinese society over the past three decades. Many of these changes are attributable to the government’s economic reforms presided over, firstly by MAO Zedong’s successor DENG Xiaoping, and following DENG, JIANG Zemin, HU Jintao and XI Jinping. In this chapter, we focus on changes that have led to a revised understanding of culture. According to a Chinese Communist Party definition, informed by historical materialism, culture ‘in a broad sense, refers to the sum total of all the material and spiritual wealth created by human beings in the course of the historical development of society; in a narrow sense, culture refers to ideology and related institutions and organizations’ (Cihai: Sea of Words. Chinese Encyclopedia 1989, p. 1731). However, over the past three decades, the Chinese government has voluntarily relinquished control over many aspects of cultural production in exchange for the potential benefits of cohesion and increased productivity that social liberalization is seen to promote. Inevitably the market, rather than government propaganda, has become the arbiter of people’s cultural tastes (Gerth 2010). It is important to bear in mind, however, that broadening of consumption practices does not necessarily constitute cultural pluralism. Indeed, the extent to which culture is commercializable remains contentious. In the view of conservatives, culture cannot be left to the forces of the market; yet the same conservatives assert that China’s culture should be globally competitive.

From Symbols to Spirit: Changing Conceptions of National Identity in Chinese Fashion

Abstract:This article explores the evolution of conceptions of national identity in contemporary Chinese fashion by analyzing Chinese designers and their work over the last thirty years. It focuses on the post-Mao years of “opening up and reform” since 1978 and draws evidence from a textual analysis of published reports and interviews with a selection of established and emerging designers. This study shows that contemporary Chinese fashion designers still hark to a notion of “Chineseness.” This invocation of an essential and identifiable “Chinese” quality is a result of China's nationalistic education curriculum but is also a mechanism by which Chinese fashion designers seek to gain rapid recognition and a distinctive place in the international community. This distinctive identity facilitates their competitiveness on the global fashion stage. This article shows that conceptions of national identity in Chinese fashion have evolved from the promotion of concrete “traditional Chinese” symbols to more amorphous ideas about “the Chinese spirit.” This spirit is manifest in two particular styles of recent years. First, the works of the “Zen” designers that seek to invoke “Oriental” ideas of peacefulness, calm, and harmony by adopting pale or neutral colors, natural fabrics, and naturally flowing shapes. Second, the designers that invoke images of “modern” China, either by sourcing inspiration from contemporary daily life or rejuvenating traditional Chinese elements with a modern look. This article argues that the evolution from the use of traditional Chinese symbols to the Chinese spirit within the fashion design world signifies a new form of Chinese nationalism: instead of delivering Chinese culture in an explicit, direct, and exterior form, Chinese designers have switched to convey their unique “Chineseness” in a subtle, indirect, and hidden form. Such evolution is a result of modernization, hybridization, and competition between the twin tensions of nationalism and globalization.

Abstract:One globalization paradigm argues that developing countries will increasingly resemble Western societies. Although influenced by Western trends, I argue that global consumerism will not make most Chinese abandon traditional values and adopt a different and totally Western consumer culture. This article, which is based on empirical evidence, stresses the role of culture and how it affects people’s strategies toward economic decision-making. I explore the changing values before and after the opening up policy, and how they influenced consumption patterns in different eras. The Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) in China was a campaign designed to pursue a purer form of communism and led to a distinctive set of cultural values and ideologies, resulting in unique consumption patterns. “Status goods” during this period were based on a person’s “revolutionary background” and loyalty to Chairman Mao, rather than on individual consumption preferences. After the opening up policy, consumer behavior moved closer to the patterns found in Western capitalist societies, but the mechanisms that drive this consumption are quite different. Chinese traditional values were challenged but did not disappear, and the impact of the Cultural Revolution also had a profound influence on those who lived through it. Contemporary Chinese consumers selectively choose certain cultural values from a range of options in order to legitimize their spending decisions.

Abstract:Reviewed by John Lowe, Charlene Tan and Ting-Hong WongIf one is interested in studying 'social change' – almost however one interprets that broad phrase – then China is a magnet to researchers. What makes it so is not only the extent of the social change that is on offer to the interested observer, but also, and perhaps more significantly, the speed at which change has taken and is taking place here. Living in China and engaging with 'life as it is lived' on a daily – if often vicarious – basis, it is easy to feel that 'ways of life' are changing at a rate that is almost sensible. Add to this observation of rapid change the claim widely made by various Chinese authorities – and commonly repeated to me in student essays – that China is 'unique' in its 5000-year cultural continuity; then similarly note the frequent, insistent references one meets to the need to recognise the influences of a philosopher-teacher from 2500 years ago if one is to 'understand' contemporary China. With this mix of cultural change and continuity the study of change in Chinese society becomes not just interesting but enigmatic. The relationships and tensions that are present in all societies, between cultural change and cultural continuity, between what we make of our present daily lives and what we take in from the past in that making process beg to be taken as being particularly significant in China (and woe betide any naïve Western researcher who does not accept this). Or do they? Should we also be questioning how much of what constitutes China and what is happening there is as 'unique' as Chinese authorities' sources claim – and my students and acquaintances like to echo. Can we approach a study of China by asking whether the uniqueness of China is any more than that of any country or culture? Should we take a 'particularist' or 'universalist' view of China, its social arrangements and its culture? As Willis is aware, and seems to be wary of, the former can lead to 'exoticism' and Orientalism in our accounts; the latter can take us to other extremes of dismissing differences as merely local matters within a generalized story of human 'progress'. We might indeed ask whether the use of concepts of 'the modern' and of 'modernity' as a framework for 'progress' might lead us in the latter direction: are they tools of an homogenizing approach to cultural analysis?
