Current Organic Synthesis

Abstract:With the advent of green chemistry, the importance of environmentally benign synthesis has been increasingly recognized. This review summarizes recent progresses in this field, covering mainly the organocatalysis, lanthanide triflate catalysis, and our recent related works. Emphasis will be paid on synthetic applications and their significance to green technology by using environmentally friendly reagents and solvents such as water and ionic liquids. In addition, some new trends in the related areas such as chemoenzymatic catalysis and organic synthesis in ionic liquid will be discussed. Abstract:The biomass-derivable ethyl lactate has been attracting daily increasing attention as a green medium in organic synthe- sis. The unique advantages of nontoxicity, low cost, complete biodegradability, high boiling point, and excellent compatibility to water and most organic compounds of this solvent cater well to the property of a green reaction medium. In recent years, ethyl lactate (EL) has been successfully used as medium in different types of organic reactions, including Suzuki-Miyaura reaction, Glaser reaction as well as cascade synthesis of heterocyclic compounds with biological activities. Based on our own research in- terest in this issue, the advances in organic synthesis employing EL as a green medium are summarized. Abstract:A new green synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfoxide was described. The use of ethylene oxide, strong acid resin, and solid supported phosphotungstic acid made the process green and feasible to industrialize. The optimal condition was selected in the experiments. The total yield was 80.5% and it was eco-friendly. The catalysts were easy to recycle. According to the experiments, the oxidation mechanism was assumed to follow the complex–oxidation–decomplex fashion.

Abstract:Abstract New advances in nanotechnology are driving a wave of technology revolution impacting a broad range of areas in agricultural production. The current work reviews nanopesticides, nano-fabricated fertilizers, and nano activity-based growth promoters reported in the last several years, focusing on mechanisms revealed for preparation and functioning. It appears to us that with many fundamental concepts have been demonstrated over last two decades, new advances in this area continue to expand mainly in three directions, i.e., efficiency improvement, material sustainability and environment-specific stimulation functionalities. It is also evident that environmental and health concerns associated with nano agrochemicals are the primary motivation and focus for most recent work. Challenges and perspectives for future development of nano agrochemicals are also discussed.

Abstract:Lanthanide triflates are stable in water. It is possible for lanthanides to undergo many organic reactions in environmentally friendly solvents. This makes lanthanides very promising in the field of green chemistry. This review describes the recent development of the lanthanidecatalyzed organic reactions in protic solvents. Those reactions include Diels-Alder, Aldol, Allylation, acetalization, pericyclization, radical reactions as well as some newlydeveloped lanthnidesbased catalysts.

Abstract:Modern trends in the greener synthesis and fabrication of inorganic, organic and coordination compounds, materials, nanomaterials, hybrids and nanocomposites are discussed. Green chemistry deals with synthesis procedures according to its classic 12 principles, contributing to the sustainability of chemical processes, energy savings, lesser toxicity of reagents and final products, lesser damage to the environment and human health, decreasing the risk of global overheating, and more rational use of natural resources and agricultural wastes. Greener techniques have been applied to synthesize both well-known chemical compounds by more sustainable routes and completely new materials. A range of nanosized materials and composites can be produced by greener routes, including nanoparticles of metals, non-metals, their oxides and salts, aerogels or quantum dots. At the same time, such classic materials as cement, ceramics, adsorbents, polymers, bioplastics and biocomposites can be improved or obtained by cleaner processes. Several non-contaminating physical methods, such as microwave heating, ultrasound-assisted and hydrothermal processes or ball milling, frequently in combination with the use of natural precursors, are of major importance in the greener synthesis, as well as solventless and biosynthesis techniques. Non-hazardous solvents including ionic liquids, use of plant extracts, fungi, yeasts, bacteria and viruses are also discussed in relation with materials fabrication. Availability, necessity and profitability of scaling up green processes are discussed.

Abstract:Diverse types of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed, including products used for the remediation of contaminated waters and soils. However, conventional NP production, whether by physical or chemical assembly, is associated with secondary impacts to human health and the environment. Green synthesis is an emerging field dedicated to the development and improvement of NP production in an effective, non-hazardous, and eco-friendly manner. This can be achieved by either: (i) the use of green materials as synthesis reagents, or (ii) employing production methods that consume less energy or natural resources. Numerous efforts have been expended to find greener materials or methods for these purposes. For instance, natural plant extracts and microbiological materials have been investigated as reducing, capping, and stabilizing reagents, and microwave energy has been explored as a way to reduce energy and reagent requirements. Green synthesis researchers are increasingly developing new NPs to treat a wide range of environmental contaminants, including heavy metals and organic pollutants. For instance, nano-scale zero valent iron synthesized with green tea extract has been reported to be effective at reducing soil bound Cr(VI) concentrations. Among the main challenges for the synthesis of NP products for environmental remediation is the ability to control the particle size and morphology. It was found that variables in green synthesis processes, such as pH, temperature, reaction/incubation time, and the use of different stabilizers can directly influence such characteristics. This review provides an overview of the various green synthesis constituents and methods that have been developed to date, characterizes green NPs including their sizes and morphologies, and considers their performance in the remediation of contaminated soils and waters. Recommended future directions are put forward to fill in the research gaps.

Abstract:Benzothiazoles have played an important role in the field of biochemistry and medicinal chemistry due to their highly pharmaceutical and biological activity. The development of synthetic processes is undoubtedly one of the most significant problems facing researchers. In this review paper, we provided recent advances in the synthesis of benzothiazole compounds related to green chemistry from condensation of 2-aminobenzenethiol with aldehydes/ketones/acids/acyl chlorides and the cyclization of thioamide or carbon dioxide (CO2) as raw materials, and the future development trend and prospect of the synthesis of benzothiazoles were anticipated.

Abstract:The field of nanotechnology spans the synthesis of nanoscale matters, understanding/utilizing their exotic physicochemical and optoelectronic properties, and organization of nanoscale structures into predefined superstructures. Over the past decade, researchers in various fields of chemistry have been studying novel methods through which the morphology and the dimensions of inorganic materials can be controlled at the micro- or even the nano-scopic level. As far as the synthesis of nanoparticles is concerned, there is an ever-growing need to develop clean, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly ("green chemistry") synthetic procedures in the pursuit of nanotechnology, especially for nanoproducts targeted at bioapplications. Thus, during the last few years, "green" has become a common term to designate those nanomaterials with the aim of replacing nondegradable and toxic regents, thereby reducing the environmental pollution. Biological processes have recently been considered as possible methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles, especially the development of "green" synthetic approaches. The advantageous features of the biomolecules' applications in nanomaterials green synthesis are that they possess the ability to guide the oriented growth of organic or inorganic substances, and are thermally and chemically stable, easy to obtain, cheap, and, most importantly, environmentally friendly. Combined with traditional chemical techniques, the biomolecules-assisted synthesis method has proven promising in the generation of a large variety of inorganic structures that are currently unattainable through any other methods. Herein, we review the biomolecules-assisted green synthesis of nanomaterials in this context, which covers our recent interesting results and mainly includes (1) nanomaterials obtained by biomolecules- assisted green method, (2) growth mechanism, and (3) their properties.

Abstract:The application of the twelve principles of green chemistry in nanoparticle synthesis is a relatively new emerging issue concerning the sustainability. This field has received great attention in recent years due to its capability to design alternative, safer, energy efficient, and less toxic routes towards synthesis. These routes have been associated with the rational utilization of various substances in the nanoparticle preparations and synthetic methods, which have been broadly discussed in this tutorial review. This article is not meant to provide an exhaustive overview of green synthesis of nanoparticles, but to present several pivotal aspects of synthesis with environmental concerns, involving the selection and evaluation of nontoxic capping and reducing agents, the choice of innocuous solvents and the development of energy-efficient synthetic methods.

Abstract:Indole motifs are important heterocycles found in natural products, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, and material science. Despite the well-established classical name reactions for indole synthesis, these transformations often require harsh reaction conditions, have a limited substrate scope, and exhibit poor regioselectivity. As a result, organic synthesis chemists have been exploring efficient and practical methods, leading to numerous strategies for synthesizing a variety of functionalized indoles. In recent years, electrochemistry has emerged as an environmentally friendly and sustainable synthetic tool, with widespread application in organic synthesis. This technology allows for elegant synthetic routes to be developed for the construction of indoles under external oxidant-free conditions. This feature article specifically focuses on recent advancements in indole synthesis from non-indole-based substrates, as well as the mechanisms underlying these transformations.
