Abstract:Considering the rapid evolution of Monkeypox in many countries in the past few months, we analyzed the spatiotemporal tendency shown in different countries. Specifically, we modified a hierarchical model with a conditional autoregressive structure by taking into account the autocorrelation of infections during neighboring time points, which can not only capture the spatiotemporal effects but also identify the temporal autocorrelations for each country. By analyzing the surveillance data of Monkeypox from France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the United States, we find that (1) there clearly exist space-time correlations among these six countries with respect to the random effect terms and long-term temporal trend for the confirmed cases; (2) countries with a high population density more likely have a risk of Monkeypox infection following the estimated coefficient 0.953 (95% CI: 0.094 – 1.764); (3) all six countries have a positive correlation between the last and current confirmed cases. Such results suggest that the comeback of Monkeypox will cause a worldwide pandemic with a high probability in the near future and effective interventions like smallpox vaccine inoculation must be taken in advance.Funding Information: Rui’s work was supported by the Outstanding Innovative Talents Cultivation Funded Programs 2021 of Renmin University of China.Declaration of Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
