Abstract:The Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacted tourism globally due to international travel restrictions. One of the technological advancements, Virtual Reality (VR), offers the pre-travel experience as an alternative method to alter human existence in tourism destinations. VR has been applied in tourism and hospitality to promote tourist experiences, especially for Gen-Z, a generation born in the technology era. This paper investigates the determinant factors of VR experience impact on Gen-Z's visit intention to Indonesian tourism destinations during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study presents a Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework to provide a sequential process of the interaction between antecedents and consequences. The model was examined using 199 respondents and employed Smart PLS 3 for empirical analysis to assess the relationship. This study result confirmed that Gen-Z visit intention was derived from their satisfaction as a part of the response stage in the SOR model. Their satisfaction was affected by telepresence, focused attention, and temporal distortion, influenced by the sense and quality of information. This study contributes to digital tourism literature, particularly in VR studies amidst the pandemic. Furthermore, for the managerial implication, this study will give insight for tourism marketers and local or national governments to understand consumer behaviour through the technology approach in order to thrive back in business.

Abstract:The article presents the results of research carried out among 1086 respondents who, according to the DSM-5 classification, qualify for the group affected by Internet gaming disorder. The aim of the survey was to collect data on the frequency and forms of VR use, as well as the factors determining the choice of virtual reality by young adults. In the course of statistical analyses, the Chi-square test, and Cramer's V interpretation were used. The collected data show that virtual reality presented with VR goggles is more attractive and absorbing than traditional computer games displayed on a monitor screen. The Chi-square test of independence and the study of the strength of the relationship showed among others that: there is a strong relationship between consciously controlling the time spent on VR games and gender (p<0.05; V = 0.514) or age (p<0.05; V = 0.611); cancelling meetings with friends to play VR games and gender (p<0.05; V = 0.673) or education (p<0.05; V = 0.567). Most respondents (50.8 per cent), classified as a group at risk of problematic use of VR games play VR games from 2 to 4 hours a day. Young adults not comply with the rules of digital hygiene, they are also characterized by low awareness of the risks arising from the use of games. Meanwhile, uncontrolled infatuation with VR can lead to addiction, which needs to be discussed and warned against. Special attention and preventive measures should be given to young men.
Immersive experiences as a resource for promoting museum tourism in the Z and millennials generations

Abstract:In recent years, immersive experiences have gained a leading role in cultural and museum tourism. However, not all the benefits of virtual reality as a promotional tool for museum tourism, especially among the younger generation, are being exploited. This paper conducted an experiment in three different immersive scenarios, using the virtual reality headset, the mobile application plus virtual reality glasses and video on a computer screen. The sample contained 157 young people from Gen Z and Millennials. The results have shown that, with higher experience immersion levels, there are higher levels of affective and conative performance in young people. In addition, where there are higher levels of immersive experience, young people with an active cultural profile have an increased affective and conative performance. Likewise, these young people are more proactive with the intention of an actual visit to the museum.

Abstract:Although virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology in tourism, little research has been conducted on what factors make consumers visit destinations presented by VR. To address this gap in the literature, this study developed a theoretical framework including authentic experience, cognitive and affective responses, attachment, and visit intention with VR tourism using a stimulus-organism-response (SOR) theory. The results revealed significant impacts of authentic experience on cognitive and affective responses, indicating that authentic experience is an important factor in VR tourism. The study identified cognitive and affective responses as significant mediators in predicting attachment and visit intention. The results demonstrated that the intention to visit places shown in VR tourism was influenced by attachment to VR. Cognitive response had a stronger influence than affective response on the intention to visit a destination in VR. This study sheds light on why potential tourists visit destinations shown in VR.

Abstract:The immersive technologies of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have been widely applied in the tourism sector. Previous research has independently explored effective applications of AR/VR in tourism from different perspectives and in various contexts; however, no integrated empirical study has drawn conclusions regarding these findings. This study constructs a meta-analytic framework featuring 24 constructs, using data from 65 independent studies retrieved from 56 papers (N = 16,559). Thus, presence was identified as the core feature of AR/VR in tourism. Through the 472 relationships involved, we found that presence has varied effects on tourism experience, either directly or indirectly, through the mediators of value perception and psychological response. Furthermore, simulation type and social interaction positively moderated the effect of presence on tourism experience, prior visitation had a negative moderating effect, while the effect of experience type was not significant. These findings contribute to the development of AR/VR in tourism.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (VR) media and the influence of user's age in the context of destination marketing by exploring their impact on cognition (presence), affection (arousal), and behavioral (intention to visit and intention to recommend the destination) outcomes. Design/methodology/approach A laboratory experiment was conducted to compare the impact of using immersive VR (vs. 2D desktop) to experience a 360-degree virtual tour of Valencia on consumers' behavior. The sample included 187 participants. Both self-reported and physiological measures were collected during the experimentation. Findings Results showed that participants in the immersive condition experienced a stronger sense of presence and higher physiological arousal than those exposed to nonimmersive content. Presence significantly mediated both the intention to visit and the intention to recommend the promoted venue. Physiological arousal mediated the relationship between media typology and the intention to recommend the destination. Upon introducing age as a moderating variable, the effect of physiological arousal on behavioral outcomes proves to be significant. Practical implications The study presents destination marketing organizations with a compelling use case for immersive technologies. It also offers design principles, potential applications and targeting strategies for VR marketing in hospitality management. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the combined effect of physiological arousal and presence on behavioral intentions in VR destination marketing, while also examining the impact of age as an individual characteristic.

Abstract:The rapid development of virtual reality (VR) technology offers opportunities for a widespread consumption of VR tourism content. It also presents challenges to better understand the effectiveness of VR experience in inducing more favorable attitude toward tourism destinations and shaping visitation intention. Based on two studies, one conducted in Hong Kong with 202 participants and another in the United Kingdom with 724 participants, this research identified several positive consequences of the sense of presence in VR experiences. First, the feeling of being in the virtual environment increases enjoyment of VR experiences. Second, the heightened feeling of being there results in stronger liking and preference in the destination. Third, positive attitude change leads to a higher level of visitation intention. Therefore, this study provides empirical evidence to confirm the effectiveness of VR in shaping consumers’ attitude and behavior.

Abstract:Virtual reality has become a more common phenomenon in both destination marketing and on-site experience. The recent challenges such as overtourism and the COVID-19 pandemic have created a pressing need to examine virtual tourism as an alternative to traditional travel. This conceptual article aims at clarifying virtual experience in tourism, discussing the main antecedents and outcomes of virtual experience, and proposing a conceptual model of virtual tourism experience. The review of the literature revealed that virtual experience in tourism is influenced by factors related to information, quality, technology acceptance, and affective involvement and has significant effects on tourists’ attitudes and behavioral intentions. This paper contributes to knowledge and practice by classifying the main groups of factors influencing virtual tourism experience, introducing the conceptual model, discussing opportunities for future research, and providing recommendations for tourism practitioners.

Abstract:Virtual reality technology has been widely applied in the tourism industry, but the literature examining the relationship between the virtual tourism experience and cultural dissemination behavior is limited. This present study examines how a virtual reality tourism experience could stimulate tourists’ cultural dissemination behavior intention. It does so by developing a moderated mediation model to explore how virtual reality tourism uses digital technology to improve tourists’ experiential value, enhances their pride, and then affects their cultural dissemination behavior intentions. Results derived from a sample of 359 respondents show that VR experiential value can stimulate tourists’ cultural dissemination behavior and that the link between VR experiential value and tourists’ cultural dissemination behavior is mediated by pride. Furthermore, the cultural value of individual collectivism moderates the relationship between VR experiential value and pride. This study extends the theoretical understanding of virtual reality tourism from the emotional perspective and also has practical implications for VR design and destination marketing.

Abstract:Virtual Reality (VR) technology has emerged as a transformative force in the realm of Human-computer interaction (HCI), offering novel applications and redefining user experiences. VR games have changed traditional electronic games, providing a human-computer interactive immersive gaming experience. In social media, VR innovative applications allow users to have an immersive conversation through various interactions, giving users a more immersive and real experience. The paper synthesizes recent research findings, highlighting key trends, challenges, and opportunities in the integration of VR into HCI and illustrates the embodiment of immersive experiences while using VR compared to the traditional way. At the same time, the challenges associated with VR technology such as motion sickness, accessibility concerns, ethical considerations, and medical challenges, are also discussed, offering a balanced perspective on the current state of the field. The future development perspective is also mentioned. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more immersive and interactive experiences that blur the lines between the physical and virtual worlds, offering users new ways to engage with digital content and each other.

Abstract:Journal of Vacation Marketing, Ahead of Print. This study aims to investigate the effect of both the affordance of virtual reality (VR) technology and users' digital media literacy on users' emotions, which leads to recommendations to use VR experiences in cultural heritage tourism. A survey was conducted at a realistic VR studio in Gyeongju World Culture Expo Park, South Korea using high-quality and sophisticated VR content that accurately reflects users' physical movements in real-time rendering. A total of 157 visitors participated in the study, and the measurement model and structural model were analysed using partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The findings show that the cognitive, physical, sensory, and functional affordance of VR devices, as well as user digital media literacy, had a significant effect on the visitors' positive emotional experiences. In addition, visitors' positive emotions had a significant effect on the recommendation intention. This empirical result shows that digital media literacy is a new major variable that affects the virtual experience of cultural heritage sites.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) games construct an immersive context for the youth’s entertainment and learning. VR game addiction (VAD) occurs simultaneously and brings about psychological issues. The current research employed a maximum likelihood estimation method to construct a structural equation model, by which learners’ VR consumption behaviors were examined. The bootstrapping approach was adopted to explore further the mediation of VR realism (VRR) and the moderation of VR affordance on learners’ VAD, which potentially leads to distressing behavioral and psychological circumstances. Data were collected from 575 students recruited in the survey, which was followed by a test of reliability and validity through confirmative factor analysis. Results concluded that VRR and consumers’ cognitive satisfaction played a significant role as mediators while conceptualizing addictive behavior based on VR-perceived experience of consumers, self-efficacy, and interactivity. Moreover, this study conceptualized addictive behavior toward VR games through a structural equation model in a media-rich environment and suggested practical implications to reduce addictive behavior.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to understand how virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) are transforming the travel and tourism sectors as well as preserving cultural heritage. We are living in a digital interaction world where new immersive experiences have been induced by the interplay between technological breakthroughs, societal needs, and commercial imperatives. Given that tourism is about cultural heritage sites worldwide, this study examines the current challenges associated with their conservation within the globalization of culture. The objective is to understand how AR and VR technology can change the way people think about tourism and protect the world's cultural heritage. With this aim in mind, the paper explores different applications of AR and VR technologies while focusing on how these can offer contemporary tourists immersive and educational experiences. The authors suggest that the advantages of accessibility should be thoroughly examined; virtual visits could be used to bypass logistical, financial, or physical barriers; and the implications of such technologies for digital preservation will also be considered under this approach. It was found out that AR and VR serve as effective means of access, enabling a larger number of people from around the world to reach cultural heritage sites. Besides, it is through these technologies that significant changes in the field of preservation can be achieved, ensuring the survival of cultural assets for future generations. Lastly, this research paper will be helpful to researchers within academic circles as well as industry practitioners and policymakers who want to know how AR/VR technology is changing the travel industry or contributing to cultural heritage protection efforts. Essential for unlocking the potential of emerging digital channels fully is the need to appreciate such intricate linkages in our rapidly changing digital world.

Abstract:Purpose Virtual reality (VR) technology is a potential tool for tourism marketers to maintain the attractiveness of their destinations and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the effectiveness of VR technology in motivating potential tourists' visit intention under lockdown conditions remains unknown. An integrated model based on the experience economy framework and mood management theory was, therefore, used to explain how tourists' VR experiences affect their mood management processes and subsequent behaviors. This research also examined how perceived travel risk influenced the relationship between mood management processes and future decisions. Design/methodology/approach This study used a cross-sectional design based on a sample collected from a Chinese survey company, Sojump. The author surveyed 285 respondents who had experienced VR tourism activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research model was tested using partial least squares–structural equation modeling. Findings The results demonstrated that the four dimensions of VR experiences differently affected mood management processes, while perceived travel risk differently moderated the influence of mood management processes on visit intention and VR stickiness. This provides insights for tourism marketers to adapt to the current tourism environment and develop recovery strategies. Originality/value In response to gaps in the literature, this research examined the effectiveness of VR technology in driving tourists' visit intention during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing insights for tourism marketers to successfully implement VR tourism and plan timely recovery strategies.
Virtual Reality in Destination Marketing: Telepresence, Social Presence, and Tourists’ Visit Intentions

Abstract:Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) have widely adopted virtual reality (VR) commercials to highlight attractions for potential tourists and encourage visitation. This study extends the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) model by incorporating telepresence and social presence as stimuli and elucidating these factors’ possible interplay in jointly shaping users’ cognition, affection, and (re)visit intentions. A 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment was conducted with a sample of 254 participants. Results showed that VR commercials with higher telepresence elicited stronger (re)visit intention, and this effect was mediated by cognition (i.e., education) and affection (i.e., entertainment, and esthetics). Such causal effects appeared stronger in contexts with lower levels of social presence. Findings offer valuable insight into the design of destination VR commercials.

Abstract:Introduction: This study aims to comprehensively understand the existing literature on immersive technology in museum exhibitions, focusing on virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and the visitor experience. The research utilizes a bibliometric approach by examining a dataset of 722 articles with two main research objectives. Firstly, it seeks to analyze current trends in immersive technology literature, specifically emphasizing VR and the user experience in museum exhibitions through co-citation analysis. Secondly, it aims to identify emerging research trends using co-word analysis. Methods: The study employs a bibliometric approach, specifically co-citation and co-word analysis, to investigate trends and forecast emerging areas in the field, particularly the role of VR in the museum context. Results: The analysis reveals the presence of five interconnected thematic clusters in the literature. These clusters include (1) VR and AR-enhanced heritage tourism, (2) VR and AR-enabled virtual museums, (3) interactive digital art education in immersive environments, (4) immersive storytelling in virtual heritage spaces, and (5) mobile AR heritage revival. Discussion: The article highlights influential works within these areas, showcasing the historical evolution of the field and the current emphasis on utilizing VR to create immersive, educational, and engaging experiences for museum visitors. The findings indicate that research on VR applications for museum exhibitions has predominantly focused on profound game-driven experiences and interactive 3D heritage, resulting in improved visitor engagement and access to cultural content. The adoption of VR technology holds the potential to revolutionize user experiences within the cultural heritage sector and reshape the overall landscape of museums and exhibitions. By presenting these research trends, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the vital role of VR in enhancing visitor experiences in museum settings. Furthermore, it paves the way for further exploration and innovation in immersive technology.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to explore the capabilities of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in enhancing the tourism experience and addressing physical travel constraints. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted among 412 tourists who had used VR and AR technologies for tourism purposes. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, multidimensional scaling, multiple regression analysis, structural equation modelling and mediation and moderation analysis. Findings VR and AR enhance tourism via immersive experiences. They overcome traditional travel barriers, but accessibility concerns, like cost, persist. The perceived potential of these technologies strongly predicts future adoption, emphasising the need to highlight their immersive benefits. Research limitations/implications This study offers ground-breaking insights into VR and AR in tourism. It acknowledges inherent limitations in accessibility, with VR and AR technologies not being universally adoptable due to costs and complexity. Theoretically, the research enriches academic discourse by highlighting the pivotal role of perceived potential in technology adoption. It also delineates the intricate relationship between VR/AR experience, satisfaction, destination image and revisit intention. Practical implications The findings emphasise crafting immersive VR and AR experiences for differentiation. By integrating these technologies into strategic marketing, organisations can enhance customer satisfaction and provide richer destination experiences. Social implications The research underscores VR and AR's potential to foster inclusive tourism, benefitting those with limitations. Additionally, promoting cultural exchange and sustainability, these technologies can drive societal harmony and contribute to economic growth through enriched tourism experiences. Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the structural relationships between the dimensions of virtual reality (VR) experiences (immersion, interaction, usability and illusion), the dimensions of VR attachment (VR dependence, VR identity, VR affect and VR familiarity) and the dimensions of VR experiential outcomes (VR experiential satisfaction, VR experiential loyalty and VR experiential advocacy). Design/methodology/approach A total of 490 visitors who tried 360 VR travel video games in the TripMoment VR were surveyed. Findings In this study, there are positive relationships between VR experiential satisfaction and immersion, interaction, illusion, as well as VR identity, VR affect and VR familiarity. In addition, VR experiential satisfaction has a positive relationship with VR experiential loyalty. In addition, VR experiential advocacy has a positive relationship with both VR experiential satisfaction and VR experiential loyalty. Practical implications The results show that tourism operators should focus on increasing VR experiential satisfaction and experiential loyalty to enable visitors to have intentions to advocate their VR experiences. Originality/value This paper provides the data that lead to a better understanding of the relationship between the dimensions of VR experiences, VR attachment and VR experiential outcomes in the tourism industry.

Hong Kong college students (<i>N</i> = 203) were assigned to three experimental groups in which they were exposed to a hotel advertorial on an online blog, a VR 360° video on a mobile phone, or a VR 360° video using Google Cardboard goggles. The results supported the hypothesis that presence plays a mediating role in the relationship between the use of VR in tourism advertising and consumer response. As one of the first studies in the tourism field to investigate the effects of a virtual depiction of a real-world environment on consumption intentions, the findings reveal how VR technology can be used to promote a hotel by generating a sense of presence. This study makes a further contribution to the VR literature by finding that the use of Cardboard goggles did not produce a significantly greater sense of presence in the experience of advertorial viewers. The theoretical contributions and practical implications of the findings for the use of VR technology in branding and promotion are discussed.
