Abstract:Bioinspired nanostructures can be the ideal functional smart materials to bridge the fundamental biology, biomedicine and nanobiotechnology fields. Among them, short peptides are among the most preferred building blocks as they can self-assemble to form versatile supramolecular architectures displaying unique physical and chemical properties, including intriguing optical features. Herein, we discuss the progress made over the past few decades in the design and characterization of optical short peptide nanomaterials, focusing on their intrinsic photoluminescent and waveguiding performances, along with the diverse modulation strategies. We review the complicated optical properties and the advanced applications of photoactive short peptide self-assemblies, including photocatalysis, as well as photothermal and photodynamic therapy. The diverse advantages of photoactive short peptide self-assemblies, such as eco-friendliness, morphological and functional flexibility, and ease of preparation and modification, endow them with the capability to potentially serve as next-generation, bio-organic optical materials, allowing the bridging of the optics world and the nanobiotechnology field.

Abstract:The supramolecular self-assembly of peptides offers a promising avenue for both materials science and biological applications. Peptides have garnered significant attention in molecular self-assembly, forming diverse nanostructures with α-helix, β-sheet, and random coil conformations. These self-assembly processes are primarily driven by the amphiphilic nature of peptides and stabilized by non-covalent interactions, leading to complex nanoarchitectures responsive to environmental stimuli. While extensively studied in biomedical applications, including drug delivery and tissue engineering, their potential applications in the fields of piezoresponsive materials, conducting materials, catalysis and energy harvesting remain underexplored. This review comprehensively elucidates the diverse material characteristics and applications of self-assembled peptides. We discuss the multi-stimuli-responsiveness of peptide self-assemblies and their roles as energy harvesters, catalysts, liquid crystalline materials, glass materials and contributors to electrical conductivity. Additionally, we address the challenges and present future perspectives associated with peptide nanomaterials. This review aims to provide insights into the versatile applications of peptide self-assemblies while concisely summarizing their well-established biomedical roles that have previously been extensively reviewed by various research groups, including our group.

Abstract:By specifically binding with various inorganic nanomaterials through their functional groups or introducing special reactivity, the nanostructures and biofunctions of designed peptides can be enriched. This review provides a brief discussion on the design, composition, and biomedical applications of bioinspired peptideinorganic nanomaterial hybrids. The attaching mechanisms of different peptide-inorganic nanomaterials are discussed from the viewpoint of the functional group, nanostructure, and conformational freedom. Particularly, the structures and functions of the obtained hybrids based on different nanomaterials are described in detail. In addition, we highlight some examples of self-assembled peptide-inorganic nanomaterial systems with relevance to biomedical applications, including biosensors, cell targeting, bioimaging, biomineralization, biocatalysts, and drug delivery. We also give a short outlook on the broad prospects of the fabrication and applications of peptide-inorganic nanomaterial hybrids.

Abstract:Inspired by biological systems, peptides can self‐assemble into various hierarchical nanostructures through non‐covalent interactions and form functional materials exhibiting excellent chemical and physical propertie, which have broad applications in bio‐/nano‐technologic fields. The self‐assembly mechanism, self‐assembly morphology of peptide supramolecula architecture and their various applications have been widely explored with the merit of biocompatible, easy preparation, and controllable functionality. Herein, we introduce the latest research progress of self‐assembling peptide‐based nanomaterials and review their applications in biomedicine and optoelectronics, including tissue engineering, anticancer therapy, biomimetic catalysis, energy harvesting, etc. We believe that this review will inspire the rational design and development of novel peptide‐based functional bio‐inspired materials in the future.

In this review, we provide a summary of the previously reported proteins/peptides as biotemplates involved in biomimetic mineralization synthesis, and categorize the obtained inorganic NPs ranging from metal nanoclusters (MNCs), quantum dots (QDs), gadolinium derivatives, and metal sulfide nanoparticles (MSNPs) with an emphasis on the recent progress in their use in biomedical applications, including bio-sensing, ion detection, bio-labeling, in vivo imaging and therapy. In the end, the challenges and future outlook in this emerging area are also discussed.

Abstract:With different scales of chirality, chiral materials have various particular properties and potential applications in many fields. Peptides are the fundamental building units of biological systems, and a variety of ordered functional nanostructures are produced through self-assembly and biomineralization of peptides in nature. This Personal Account describes chiral silica materials fabricated by using amphiphilic peptides as building blocks. Three particular biomineralization approaches are described based on different kinds of geometry of amphiphilic peptides: the influence of the specific amino acid proline in the peptide sequence, the hydrophilicity of amphiphilic peptides, and different kinds of hydrophobic tails in amphiphilic peptides. These strategies are useful for designing peptides toward the bottom-up synthesis of nanomaterials as well as improving the understanding of the mechanism of peptide self-assembly.

Abstract:This review summarizes the advances of peptide-based nanomaterials, focusing on the mechanisms, properties, and applications.Outlining the synthesis and properties of peptide nanomaterials is helpful for the relevant research fields.The peptide-based nanomaterials show potential applications in many fields.Peptide-based materials that have diverse structures and functionalities are an important type of biomaterials. In former times, peptide-based nanomaterials with excellent stability were constructed through self-assembly. Compared with individual peptides, peptide-based self-assembly nanomaterials that form well-ordered superstructures possess many advantages such as good thermo- and mechanical stability, semiconductivity, piezoelectricity and optical properties. Moreover, due to their excellent biocompatibility and biological activity, peptide-based self-assembly nanomaterials have been vastly used in different fields. In this review, we provide the advances of peptide-based self-assembly nanostructures, focusing on the driving forces that dominate peptide self-assembly and assembly mechanisms of peptides. After that, we outline the synthesis and properties of peptide-based nanomaterials, followed by the applications of functional peptide nanomaterials. Finally, we provide perspectives on the challenges and future of peptide-based nanomaterials.Peptide-based self-assembly nanomaterials possess many advantages. Based on their ability to self-assemble, peptide nanomaterials provide huge potential applications in biomedical and material technologies. Abstract:Mimicking the evolution processes of Nature, the combinatorial approach to biomolecular recognition properties attracts much attention due to the potential as a generic scheme to achieving complex material structures and hierarchical assemblies with molecular precision from the bottom up. In this paper, some recent efforts in the biomimetic synthesis of inorganic materials are reviewed, with emphasis placed on in vitro material formation with the use of protein/peptide molecules found in natural organisms as well as those with specific affinities to inorganic materials selected through the molecular evolution process. The applications of material-specific peptides and proteins in sensing and guiding hierarchical material assembly are also briefly discussed at the end.

Abstract:Due to the mellow synthetic methods, determined molecular structures, well biocompatibility and controlled degradation, oligopeptides as the self-assembled units have attracted increasing research interest, and their self-assemblies present a great potential in biomedical fields such as drug/gene delivery, 3D cell culture, tissue engineering scaffold and biomineralization. This review summarized the research progress in self-assembly of oligopeptides including linear and cyclic peptides in recent years. The molecular design, self-assembled morpho- logies, proposed mechanisms, as well as their biomedical applications are reviewed in detail.

Abstract:Natural biomolecular systems have evolved to form a rich variety of supramolecular materials and machinery fundamental to cellular function. The assembly of these structures commonly involves interactions between specific molecular building blocks, a strategy that can also be replicated in an artificial setting to prepare functional materials. The self-assembly of synthetic biomimetic peptides thus allows the exploration of chemical and sequence space beyond that used routinely by biology. In this Review, we discuss recent conceptual and experimental advances in self-assembling artificial peptidic materials. In particular, we explore how naturally occurring structures and phenomena have inspired the development of functional biomimetic materials that we can harness for potential interactions with biological systems. As our fundamental understanding of peptide self-assembly evolves, increasingly sophisticated materials and applications emerge and lead to the development of a new set of building blocks and assembly principles relevant to materials science, molecular biology, nanotechnology and precision medicine.

Abstract:Biomineralization is an attractive pathway to produce mineral-based biomaterials with high performance and hierarchical structures. To date, the biomineralization process and mechanism have been extensively studied, especially for the formation of bone, teeth, and nacre. Inspired by those, abundant biomimetic mineralized materials have been fabricated for biomedical applications. Those bioinspired materials generally exhibit great mechanical properties and biological functions. Nevertheless, substantial gaps remain between biomimetic materials and natural materials, particularly with respect to mechanical properties and mutiscale structures. This Review summarizes the recent progress of micro- and macroscopic biomimetic mineralization from the perspective of materials synthesis and biomedical applications. To begin with, we discuss the progress of biomimetic mineralization at the microscopic level. The mechanical strength, stability, and functionality of the nano- and micromaterials are significantly improved by introducing biominerals, such as DNA nanostructures, nanovaccines, and living cells. Next, numerous biomimetic strategies based on biomineralization at the macroscopic scale are highlighted, including in situ mineralization and bottom-up assembly of mineralized building blocks. Finally, challenges and future perspectives regarding the development of biomimetic mineralization are also presented with the aim of offering insights for the rational design and fabrication of next-generation biomimetic mineralized materials.

Abstract:Combining physics, engineering, chemistry and biology, we can now design, synthesize and fabricate biological nano-materials at the molecular scale using self-assembling peptide systems. These peptides have been used for fabrication of nanomaterials including nanofibers, nanotubes and vesicles, nanometer-thick surface coating and nanowires. Some of these peptides are used for stabilizing membrane proteins, and others provide a more permissive environment for cell growth, repair of tissues in regenerative medicine, and delivering genes and drugs. Self-assembling peptides are also useful for fabricating a wide spectrum of exquisitely fine architectures, new materials and nanodevices for nanobiotechnology and a variety of engineering. These systems lie at the interface between molecular biology, chemistry, materials science and engineering. Molecular self-assembly will harness nature's enormous power to benefit other disciplines and society.

Abstract:Inspired by self-assembling peptides found in native proteins, deliberately designed engineered peptides have shown outstanding biocompatibility, biodegradability, and extracellular matrix-mimicking microenvironments. Assembly of the peptides can be triggered by external stimuli, such as electrolytes, temperature, and pH. The formation of nanostructures and subsequent nanocomposite materials often occur under physiological conditions. The respective properties of side chains in each amino acids provide numerous sites for chemical modification and conjugation choices of the peptides, enabling various resulting supramolecular nanostructures and hydrogels with adjustable mechanical and physicochemical properties. Moreover, additional functionalities can be easily induced into the hydrogels, including shear-thinning, bioactivity, self-healing, and shape memory. It further broaden the scope of application of self-assemble peptide materials. This review outlines designs of self-assembly peptide (β-sheet, α-helix, collagen-like peptides, elastin-like polypeptides, and peptide amphiphiles) with potential additional functionalities and their biomedical applications in bioprinting, tissue engineering, and drug delivery.

Abstract:The most important aspects in biomineralization are the controlled nucleation and growth of inorganic minerals from aqueous solutions under the mediation of organic matrix secreted by the cell, and the formation of the biomineralized materials (bone, teeth, shell etc. ) with the hierarchical structure and special assembly. Biomimetic synthesis inspired by the biomineralization involves the controlled formation of inorganic materials with organic assembly as template, and the production of inorganic materials with special microstructure and excellent physical and chemical properties. Biomimetic synthesis has now become a promising field in inorganic materials chemistry research. The research status of biomimetic synthesis of inorganic materials is reviewed.

Abstract:<p>The review summaries our achievements in biomineralization. A new understanding of non‐classical nucleation is introduced, which highlights the formation of ionic clusters during the early mineral formation. This discovery directs to a new chemical concept of inorganic ionic oligomers and their crosslinking. Different from the conventional syntheses of inorganic materials, the inorganic ionic oligomers can be used as the conformable precursors to achieve moldable constructions, which arises from a fusion of classic inorganic and polymer chemistry by sharing the same process for the manufacture of materials. By using the inorganic oligomers, the biomimetic regenerations/repairs of hard tissues such as tooth enamel and bone can be realized. And the advanced artificial materials superior over biological ones can be developed by inorganic‐organic co‐polymerization. Moreover, biomineralization is a tool for the integration of materials and biological organism. Our attempts demonstrate that the rationally designed materials‐biologicals can contribute to vaccine improvement, universal blood transfusion, and cancer treatment, etc. They follow a transformation of biomineralization study from biomimetic synthesis of materials to biomimetic modification of organisms and furthermore, start an understanding of chemical biological regulation by materials.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The design and fabrication of self-assembled peptide nanostructures offer an amazing platform for creating functional nanomaterials for various biomedical applications. Utilizing the mechanical and biological advantages of the protein-mimetic peptide (PMP) system, and combining self-assembled PMP nanofibers with other nanomaterials like nanoparticles, the fabricated PMP-based hybrid fibrous nanostructures can serve as promising candidates for advanced technological applications. In this review, we present the design, synthesis, modification, and fabrication of PMP nanofibers by mimicking the properties and functions of several types of proteins, including extracellular matrix proteins, silk proteins, amyloid proteins, and heparin. The sequence and motif design of PMPs, and the relationships between the design of PMP monomers and the fabrication of functional fibrous biomaterials are introduced and discussed. Furthermore, we summarize a basic classification of various peptide motifs, and provide some instructions for the function-based design of peptide nanostructures, in which some issues on the motif design and function tailoring are discussed. Finally, the recent advances in the PMP nanofiber-based functional nano materials in biomineralization, cell culture, tissue regeneration, drug delivery, hemostasis, bioimaging, and biosensors are presented in detail. We believe that this review will be very helpful for researchers to understand the property-specific molecular design, controllable supramolecular self-assembly, and motif-specific applications of both peptides and proteins. Abstract:The self-assembled peptide nanomaterials have been the focus of considerable research in recent years. Due to their good biocompatibility and the structure diversity, these materials are extremely attractive as building blocks for various applications such as material science, tissue engineering, bioengineering, and drug delivery. Firstly, this paper reviews the recent research concerning the self-assembly of peptides and their derivates into nanomaterials, including hydrophobic dipeptides, surfactant-like peptides, amyloid peptide fragments, and peptide-amphiphiles. Through the molecular self-assembling, these peptide molecules are assembled into various nanometer-scale structures and then further orgnaized to form nanotuber, nanofiber, nanovesicle, nanosphere and nanohydrogel. Meanwhile, the mechanism for the fomation of peptide assemblies and molecular dynamics simulation of the peptide self-asssembly are discussed. Finally, we introduces the application progress of the peptide-based nanomaterials, including the templates for the fabrication of metal/semiconductor materials, elements in biosensors, scaffolds for tissue engineering and regeneration, and carriers for drug delivery.

Abstract:Peptides, the fundamental building units of biological systems, are chiral in molecular scale as well as in spatial conformation. Shells are exquisite examples of well-defined chiral structures produced by natural biomineralization. However, the fundamental mechanism of chirality expressed in biological organisms remains unclear. Here, we present a system that mimics natural biomineralization and produces enantiopure chiral inorganic materials with controllable helicity. By tuning the hydrophilicity of the amphiphilic peptides, the chiral morphologies and mesostructures can be changed. With decreasing hydrophilicity of the amphiphilic peptides, we observed that the nanostructures changed from twisted nanofibers with a hexagonal mesostructure to twisted nanoribbons with a lamellar mesostructure, and the extent of the helicity decreased. Defining the mechanism of chiral inorganic materials formed from peptides by noncovalent interactions can improve strategies toward the bottom-up synthesis of nanomaterials as well as in the field of bioengineering.
