Abstract:In the bad-cavity limit, the collective atomic dipole is highly coherent, resulting in the phase information of an active optical clock (AOC) laser primarily stored in the atomic gain medium. Therefore, compared with the good-cavity laser, the sensitivity of an AOC laser to cavity fluctuations is greatly reduced, as characterized by the suppressed cavity-pulling effect. In this work, the AOC lasing on the cesium 7S1/2-6P3/2 clock transition with a natural linewidth of 1.81 MHz under a weak magnetic field is achieved. We calculate the Zeeman spectra of upper and lower states of clock transition, and measure the beat-note spectrum between different Zeeman-sublevel transitions of 7S1/2-6P3/2. Moreover, the cavity-pulling, temperature, power, and linewidth characteristics of the AOC laser are demonstrated under a weak magnetic field. Such an emerging laser can be applied as a narrow-linewidth local oscillator, as well as an active optical frequency standard, which is promising for the field of precision measurement.
Lasing and Suppressed Cavity-Pulling Effect of Cesium Active Optical Clock

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the collective emission behavior and suppressed cavity-pulling effect of four-level active optical clock with Cesium atoms. Thermal Cesium atoms in a glass cell velocity selective pumped with a 455.5 nm laser operating at 6S_1/2 to 7P_3/2 transition are used as lasing medium. Population inverted Cesium atoms between 7S_1/2 and 6P_3/2 levels are optical weakly coupled by a pair cavity mirrors working at deep bad-cavity regime with a finesse of 4.3, and the ratio between cavity bandwidth and gain bandwidth is approximately 45. With increased 455.5 nm pumping laser intensity, the output power of cesium active optical clock at 1469.9 nm from 7S_1/2 level to 6P_3/2 level shows a threshold and reach a power of 13 μW. Active optical clock would dramatically improve the optical clock stability since the lasing frequency does not follow the cavity length variation exactly, but in a form of suppressed cavity pulling effect. In this letter the cavity pulling effect is measured using a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) to be reduced by a factor of 38.2 and 41.4 as the detuning between the 1469.9 nm cavity length of the Cs active optical clock and the Cs 1469.9 nm transition is set to be 140.8 MHz and 281.6 MHz respectively. The mechanism demonstrated here is of great significance for new generation optical clocks and can be applied to improve the stability of best optical clocks by at least two orders of magnitude.
Optical-lattice-based Cs Active Clock with a Continual Superradiant Lasing Signal

Abstract:We demonstrate state-of-the-art technique of an active clock to provide a continuous superradiant lasing signal using an ensemble of trapped Cs atoms in the optical lattice. A magic wavelength of the proposed |7S1/2; F = 4, MF = 0> - |6P3/2; F = 3, MF = 0> clock transition in Cs atom is identified at 1181 nm for constructing the optical lattice. Pertinent optical lines are also found for pumping and repumping atoms from their ground states. A fractional uncertainty about 10-15 level to the clock frequency has been predicted by carrying out rigorous calculations of several atomic properties. The bad-cavity operational mode of the active clock is anticipated to improve its short-term stability remarkably by suppressing intrinsic thermal fluctuations. Thus, a composite clock system with better in both short-term and long-term stabilities can be built by combining the above proposed active clock with another high-accuracy passive optical clock.

Abstract:The hyperfine structure (hfs) of Cs 7P 1/2 state is measured utilizing four-level active optical clock. Combing the Doppler effect and the active stimulated emission, the accuracy of Cs 7P 1/2 hfs is expected to be optimized. The correction terms of experimental results, such as cavity-pulling effect, light shift and collision shift, are analyzed. Such a scheme can be widely extended to other alkali-metal atoms to enrich the measurements of hfs.

Abstract:Two feasible schemes are proposed by laser cooling of alkali atoms to realize the narrow-linewidth, continual super-radiant lasing. Utilizing the D1 gray molasses to realize a cloud of cold Cs atoms for the two-level Faraday active optical clock (AOC), the effect of Doppler broadening on the transmission bandwidth of Faraday atomic filter will be effectively suppressed to the level of natural linewidth. Thus, the influence of mechanical or thermal vibrations of cavity mirrors on the clock laser will be decreased by about 102 times, which is expected to further narrow the laser linewidth by two orders of magnitude compared with the thermal atomic Faraday AOC to Hz level. Moreover, the four-level AOC based on the narrow linewidth cooling of Cs atoms using the 6S-7P transition is proposed. The 455 nm laser at 6S(1/2)-7P(3/2) transition plays two roles simultaneously, one is the cooling laser for a magneto-optical trap (MOT), another is the pumping laser for population inversion of 1470 nm clock transition, which is helpful to improve the compactness of the system. In the four-level structure, the frequency of pumping laser is far detuning from that of clock laser, therefore, the light shift resulting from the 455 nm laser is negligible. This four-level AOC based on cold atoms will further reduce the collision shift in thermal atom system to achieve a high-precision optical frequency reference.

Abstract:We are setting up an experiment to investigate an active optical clock scheme in four-level configuration with Cesium atoms. The 1469 nm Cesium active optical clock output in a bad cavity laser regime is generated and the wavelength is measured to be 1469.500 nm by using spectrometer. The 1469 nm lasing threshold and output power is measured when changing 455 nm pumping laser power and frequency. The 1469 nm Cesium active optical clock output multi-threshold is observed when changing bad-cavity length. We also sweep the bad-cavity length and measure the 1469 nm Cesium active optical clock output frequency using a wavelength meter, proving the cavity-pulling reduction due to the bad-cavity effect.

Abstract:This letter presents the principles and techniques of active optical clock, a special laser combining the laser physics of one-atom laser, bad-cavity gas laser, super-cavity stabilized laser and optical atomic clock. As an example, a compact version of active optical clock based on thermal Strontium atomic beam shows a quantum-limited linewidth of 0.51 Hz, which is insensitive to laser cavity-length noise, and may surpass the recorded narrowest 6.7 Hz of Hg ion optical clock and 27Hz of very recent optical lattice clock. The estimated 0.1Hz one-second instability and 0.27Hz uncertainty are limited only by the relativistic Doppler effect may be improved to 10mHz by using cold atoms.

Abstract:We realize the lasing of cesium active optical clock with 459 nm laser pumping, which operates deep in the optical bad-cavity regime. The ratio between cavity bandwidth and gain bandwidth is 55.08 theoretically. With 459 nm laser pumping, the population inversion occurs between the cesium 7S1/2 state and 6P3/2 state, and the stimulated radiation between the two states is realized. The 1469.9 nm output signal of cesium active optical clock can reach a power of 8 μW. The output power also shows a threshold character with pumping laser power and can be influenced by the Cs cell temperature. This active optical clock has an advantage in stability over the conventional optical clocks, due to its suppression of cavity pulling effect, which is also demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract:Abstract Active optical clocks take advantage of the substantial suppression of cavity pulling in the bad‐cavity lasing regime and feature the simple structure and excellent portability. In the extreme case, where the cavity mirror reflection approaches zero and cannot support any quasi‐bound modes for light waves, conventional bad‐cavity lasers become the cavityless lasing and the cavity pulling vanishes. Consequently, the laser frequency is determined entirely by the atomic transition. This work is dedicated to theoretically explore the potential application of the cavityless lasing in active optical clocks. Without loss of generality, Cs atoms with well‐established quantum control techniques are employed as the gain medium that is pumped by a 459‐nm laser. The clock laser wavelength is 1470 nm. The simulation shows that the frequency stability of the clock laser with feasible physical quantities reaches at 1 s of averaging time, one order of magnitude better than the recently demonstrated compact passive optical clocks that are built upon a two‐photon transition in a hot Rb vapor and upon the modulation transfer spectroscopy of thermal Cs atoms. Such compact cavityless lasing‐based active optical clocks have the broad application prospect in satellite navigation and communications and promise an architecture for the integrated photonic metrology.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a new method to suppress the AC Stark effect (light shift) in compact cesium beam atomic clocks. The clock used in experiment uses the optically detected magnetic-state-selection scheme independently proposed and developed by Peking University. This method compensates the AC Stark effect by introducing a detuned laser into the detection light. We demonstrate theoretically that the AC Stark effect can be strongly suppressed with properly chosen detuned light. In addition, we experiment this scheme and the a-coefficient (the sensitivity of the AC Stark effect to laser power fluctuation) is successfully reduced from 1.23 x 10(-12) /mW to 8 x 10(-14)/mW. We also test the long-term frequency stability with additional laser intensity noise. It is shown that the fractional Allan deviation at 20000 s is reduced from 2.0 x 10(-13) to 5.9 x 10(-14), which reveals the suppression of the light shift with our method. These results are relevant for improving the long-term frequency stability of compact cesium beam atomic clocks. Copyright (C) 2022 EPLA

Abstract:Known as a unique optical clock, active optical clock has prior advantages to surpass the limitation of the conventional optical clock in potential stability. In this paper, we proposed an improved Cesium active Faraday optical frequency standard with 459 nm laser pumping. This scheme reduces the residual Doppler broadening in previous results with 852 nm laser pumping. The transmission is 2.4% and the bandwidth of the transmission peak is 12.3 MHz. It greatly narrows the bandwidth of Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter and decreases the length of the bad cavity used in Cesium active Faraday optical frequency standard. This will be very helpful for further suppression of cavity pulling effect.

Preliminary Results of Active Optical Clock with Cavity-Length Stabilization

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated the active optical clock with a good suppression to cavity-length noise compared with the passive one. However, the frequency stability of the four-level active optical clock for thermal atoms is still limited by the residual cavity-pulling effect. In this paper, we preliminarily realized the cavity-length stabilization in 1064/1470 nm dual-wavelength good-bad cavity system. The synchronous cavity-length change between two dual-wavelength systems is realized by using the phase locking technique of 1064 nm good-cavity lasers. Therefore, the beating linewidth of 1470 nm bad-cavity lasers will also be reduced considering that the 1064/1470 nm dual-wavelength lasers share the one cavity. The tracking accuracy of 1064 nm good-cavity lasers is better than 3x10(-16) at 1 s after phase-locking, and the linewidth of 1470 nm bad-cavity laser is reduced to 77 Hz. The linewidth of active optical frequency standard is still limited by the light shift, collision shift and Zeeman shift. The beating signal of magnetic sublevels corresponding to the Cs 1470 nm clock transition is observed under Zeeman effect. Further research is needed, such as, the design of vacuum chamber and magnetic shielding, to reduce the linewidth of the continuous 1470 nm active optical frequency standard.
A Compact Pumping Laser at 459 Nm with 10−15stability for Cs Four-Level Active Optical Clock

Abstract:Utilizing the modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) technique, we realize a compact pumping laser at 459 nm based on cesium (Cs) 6 2 S 1/2 F=4 to 7 2 p 1/2 F'=3 transition with a stability of 1. 8 ×10 -14 /√{τ} and decreasing to 8×10 -15 at 60 s. The 459 nm pumping laser stabilized by MTS technique, achieves the stability by about 2 orders of magnitude better than that of the saturation absorption spectroscopy (SAS), which will contribute to the linewidth reduction of 1470 nm ultimate laser in Cs four-level active optical clock. The 1470 nm stimulated radiation can reach a power of 100 μW with the stabilized 459 nm pumping laser power being 6 mW. Such a stable laser not only can be used as the pumping laser in active optical clock system, but also a novel optical frequency standard for length and other applications.
