Abstract:The economic transition in China since the late 1970s has led to not only drastic social transformations but also rapid advancements in science and technology, as well as the revolution in information and communications technology. In order to enhance the global competence of the Chinese population in coping with the challenges of a knowledge-based economy, the higher education sector has been going through restructuring along the lines of marketization, privatization and decentralization. Responding to the the challenges of globalization, the Chinese government has opened up the education market by allowing overseas universities to offer programmes on the mainland. This article sets out in this wider policy context to examine the current developments of transnational higher education in China, with particular reference to how students in Zhejiang province enrolling in these overseas programmes, especially those offered by Australian providers, evaluate their learning experiences. This article will also discuss the major concerns raised by the respondents in our study regarding the newly emerging transnational higher education programmes, with particular reference to examining how far these new programmes would affect the regulatory framework in Chinese higher education.
Understanding international students' motivations to pursue higher education in mainland China

Abstract:In the international education market, much attention has been paid to China, as it is the world's largest source country in sending students abroad. The other side of the story, that is, China, as the world's third most popular destination, is considerably less known and researched. This study seizes this research opportunity and focuses on exploring why international students choose to do their higher education in mainland China. International students from five Chinese coastal universities are the research respondents. Focus group discussions were first conducted and elicited 31 motivating items. They were later evaluated through a questionnaire-based survey. The push-pull model was critically reviewed and then used to organise the results. A questionnaire-based survey (n = 462) was later undertaken. Seven motivation factors were identified and a hierarchical relationship among the motivations was observed. The most influential push factor is the students' desire for learning, novelty and challenge seeking, while the strongest pull factor is their expectation for China's prosperous future. The motivations with medium priority were self-understanding, quality of education, and value for money. Also, stimulating factors and admission issues were important, but significantly less important than other factors. Demographic factors were found to be influential to motivations. Focusing on "reverse" international student mobility, this research enriches knowledge about international students' destination choice. It also offers practical implications to universities and institutes in China and other emerging countries, who are interested in offering better programmes and attracting more international students.
International Students' Experiences in China: Does the Planned Reverse Mobility Work?

Abstract:This study examines the influx of international students to China in recent years and the corresponding internationalization strategies in the higher education sector. In assessing international students’ learning and socio-cultural experiences in Chinese universities, we review the development of internationalization of China’s higher education from the perspective of inbound international students and the national strategy to develop the country’s soft power and international competitiveness. Data from a nationwide census of international students and the Survey of International Students’ Experience and Satisfaction suggest that China is gradually becoming a key higher education destination for developing countries, particularly for students from neighboring Asian countries. Major challenges for international students include limited English resources, inadequate student-faculty interaction on campus, and difficulties in socio-cultural adjustment. This study outlines the key strengths and limitations of the internationalization of higher education in China and also provides directions for future research in this regard.

Abstract:A theoretical model of positioned, positioning, and repositioning is used to conceptualize the evolving process of the internationalization of Chinese higher education and answer the following three questions: (a) How have the quantitative trends of Chinese students studying abroad and international students studying in China changed over the past 30 years? (b) What are the differences between Chinese students studying abroad and international students studying in China in recent years, in terms of the host and sending countries, the level of study, and the fields of study, and what do the differences mean when compared to those in other countries? (c) What are the challenges, opportunities, and strategies in the years to come? To answer the first question, a compilation of descriptive quantitative data is used from numerous large national and international data sources, which reports a long-term upward trend (with some fluctuations) of inbound international students in China and outbound Chinese international students around the world over the past 30 years. To answer the second question, using general international mobile student profiles for context, data were compared of inbound international students in China and the United States in terms of both level of study and field of study. These revealed imbalanced patterns: Chinese outbound students are more likely to be in certain fields (e.g., STEM, business) and at graduate levels, but international students in China are more likely to be undergraduate students and non-degreed students in the humanities and language studies. Based on the data for the first two questions, the issues are synthesized in order to present the opportunities and challenges regarding the continuation of China’s internationalization of its higher education, especially with respect to inbound international students. In terms of issues and opportunities, economic and other impacts (such as political, financial, and pandemic related) are highlighted and call China’s attention to maintaining and expanding the strengths of its higher education system while considering competition from neighboring countries. Six major challenges are identified in this area, and suggestions are provided.

Abstract:The number of Chinese students studying abroad keeps increasing. A total of 622,100 Chinese students studied at universities abroad in 2018 (Textor 2020). There is growing interest in studying these international students from a variety of perspectives, including the economic benefits to host countries, educational mobility (Cheng 2021), intercultural communication (Yu and Moskal 2019), academic and social adaptation (Gu 2016), and curriculum internationalization (Cheng et al. 2018). The experiences of Chinese students returning "home" have also attracted attention with a focus on identity changes (Wang 2020) and life and work in China (Gill 2010).

Abstract:During recent decades, both institutions of higher education and university students of the world are trying to become international by offering or gaining some form of international education, which has caught the attention of increasingly more researchers (Jackson, 2004; Trenchs-Parera, 2009). As East Asian students have increasingly become the majority of international students on university campuses (Xia, 2009), Chinese institutions of higher education have also been recruiting more and more international students. Nevertheless, research on international students in China has been scarce. The present interview study aimed to document the challenges Korean students had while studying full-time in a prestigious university in Beijing. Interviews with 10 senior Korean English majors revealed that they confronted a series of academic, linguistic and cultural challenges while studying in the university. Based on this finding, some implications are discussed.

Abstract:This qualitative study engaged five international graduate students from four different countries (the U.S., Colombia, Cape Verde Island, and Spain) who were studying at a Chinese university in Shanghai. The researcher investigated their personal and academic lives in China, their interaction with local people and integration into the local context. Their sense of belonging was also explored. Data were drawn from a questionnaire, email correspondence, face-to-face interviews, and follow-up emails during the period of 1 year. In light of the data, I discussed factors such as language proficiency, engagement with culture, and the power of native language in relation to sense of belonging. I conceptualized a mediated space, one incorporating these students’ multiple cultures, and created through negotiation with themselves and the host culture. Implications for China’s international education are discussed.

Abstract:This paper discusses the processes of the educational travel of the Chinese students abroad. Based on data of the Ministry of Education of China, publications from the Chinese Internet, original articles published in the world periodicals, the reasons elucidated why the number of students leaving China changed from 2001 to 2018; describes funding sources of educational travel. Information on the contemporary preferences of Chinese students in selection of countries and study programs, aims and reasons of educational travel abroad is provided. The hard competition of the young persons after school on educational services market, expected job difficulties after graduation from national universities and influence of parents are pushing young Chinese people to consider studying abroad. Over the past 10 years, the number of Chinese citizens studying in foreign universities rates more than doubled and reached to 662.1 thousand in 2018. The aim of such migration is not only acquiring advanced western knowledge or improving foreign language skills but also getting the so-called symbolic capital, which arises after graduation from the famous foreign universities. This capital will bring tangible employment benefits and future career privileges in the Chinese companies. Therefore, currently the largest number of Chinese young people seek to become students in English speaking countries, where the concentration of the best world universities included in the top-100 of international rankings is high. The modern professional preferences of Chinese students correspond to the development trends of the China’s national economy and science, and depend on the future employment and opportunity to receive the scholarships from the Government of China.

Abstract:The development of the global education mission has been strengthened by the widening perspective of transnationalism for higher education. The mobility of international higher education (IHR) has become a global hot trend especially over the past few decades. China continues to be the single largest and fastest-growing nation in terms of sending student bodies for overseas tertiary education today. With the booming of international higher education (IHE) seeking, Chinese international students (CIS) are however troubled by a series of sociocultural and communication challenges, damaging their education outcomes, aspirations, labor market preparations, as well as global education efficiency. This paper explores the major reasons that intrigue CIS to seek IHE, common obstacles they encounter during their foreign education journey, and existent coping strategies. The paper ends with an outlook into a new strategy which requires more researching and data gathering; it serves as a preliminary step to a future proposal of a multidimensional model.
Experiences of Chinese international students within higher education: a narrative study

Abstract:ABSTRACT Research has shown that international students experience challenges in the United States. This study explored how ten Chinese students drew upon their funds of knowledge to deal with challenges within higher education and analyzed how these students studying abroad positioned themselves within their experiences in the United States. Theoretical perspectives included funds of knowledge and positioning theory. Data sources included twenty interviews with ten participants. Findings showed how participants drew upon their funds of knowledge such as first language and social networks to deal with challenges. Findings also showed (a) how these participants positioned themselves within the storyline of challenges in their early years in college, and (b) how these participants repositioned themselves within the storyline of future plans.

Abstract:According to UNESCO statistics, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) sends far more students to study overseas than any other country in the world. Similarly, from the receiving countries’ point of view, PRC students form by far the highest proportion of international students. In many respects, this is a success story, but it also poses a number of risks to universities. This paper focuses on one of those key risks that of student dissatisfaction (including from PRC students themselves). Using a sequential mixed-method study, it addresses two research questions: (a) Chinese students’ level of satisfaction with their social integration into the university community and (b) the barriers that Chinese students’ perceive in becoming more socially integrated into the university student community. The research finds that many Chinese students are dissatisfied with their range of friendships and that they find it more challenging to socialise with students of other nationalities than other students do. They point out a number of barriers to integration, with cultural distance playing a major role, but also argue for the impact of individual factors. The paper concludes by considering the implications for universities and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:Purpose The number of international students in China has been increasing over the recent decades. The rapid expansion of the international student population aroused concerns over the capacity of Chinese universities to fulfill international students’ expectations toward academic development. Perceiving student learning experiences as an important indicator of higher education quality, this article focuses on undergraduate international students in China and discusses their learning experiences from three perspectives, i.e., perceived learning environment, academic engagement, and student development. Design/Approach/Methods Data were generated by a survey involving 1,428 international students studying for an undergraduate degree at 34 universities in China. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and the structural equation model was applied. Findings The research showed the respondents’ academic development in a range of skills and abilities, while their learning experiences at the Chinese higher education institutions (HEIs) were largely unsatisfactory. Specifically, the research revealed the respondents’ moderate-to-low-level evaluation of perceived classroom learning environment, their low level of academic engagement, and the significant negative influences of the perceived classroom learning environment and academic engagement on their academic development. Originality/Value The analysis holds implications for the enhancement of positive learning experiences of international undergraduate students in China and the improvement of the quality of Chinese international student education. Student learning experiences are an important indicator of the quality of college teaching. Drawing on the data generated by a survey involving 1,428 international students studying for an undergraduate degree at 34 universities in China, this presentation explores the characteristics of international undergraduate students’ learning experiences in Chinese universities and analyzes the relationship among the three dimensions of their learning experiences.

The Complexity of Study Abroad: Stories from Ethnic Minority American Students in China

Abstract:This study focuses on the experiences of two African American and three Chinese American college students studying in China during the 2013–2014 academic year. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, all five students made progress in their Chinese proficiency, measured by test scores, lexical diversity, and total amount of language produced in each conversation. Qualitatively, the following themes emerged: (a) interactions with Chinese people outside the classroom, (b) how the concept of "self" was viewed by the Chinese people, (c) personality factors, and (d) the language progress. The student who did not enjoy the experience as much as the other students was ethnic Chinese with the highest level of Chinese proficiency. The explanation might be a mismatch between her ideal subject position of a successful language learner and the perceived subject position of a local Chinese person. This study provides additional evidence to show that experience abroad is complex and highly individualized. Even students from the same ethnic groups might have different experiences. Factors such as personality, prior cross-cultural experiences, language proficiency, expectations, and self-identification interact with each other in complex ways to influence the students' experience abroad. Encouraging students to cultivate a more outgoing self in their second language (L2) might help them better take advantage of the study abroad experience.

Abstract:<span>This article takes a policy-as-discourse approach to understanding how Chinese policy texts construct international students. This is important given the growth of China as a study destination, and the fact that the majority of the studies on Chinese internationalisation policy are descriptive, and poorly integrated with literature focused on other contexts. Drawing upon a thematic analysis of 19 policy texts, the article reveals that economic rationales are absent in the policy texts; it also reveals five somewhat contradictory ways in which international students are constructed in policies: As 'para-diplomats' and 'future elites', but also as sources of 'mutual exchange', of 'insufficient quality' and finally, as requiring 'guidance' to understand Chinese laws. The article also discusses these constructions and problems with the assumptions within them, and how such problems could be thought about differently, with reference to the 'critical internationalisation studies' literature developed largely with a focus on the Global North.</span>

Abstract:China has continuously provided international students studying abroad, whose number has mounted to over 2 million in the past four years. While even-more people paid attention to their learning difficulties, seldom did they notice the issues such as identity loss. In this essay, the author discussed the concept about culture, language, identity and difference, the relationship between them on the basis of own experience as an international student in Australia. Facing the unfamiliar environment as well as the challenges, international students may accept the differences, adapt the attitudes and expand the horizon to embrace new culture.

Abstract:The largest group of international students pursuing their overseas higher education in the UK come from China; and yet, little qualitative research has explored the experiences of Chinese students who have recently made this transition, with even less focusing on the experiences of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The present article set out to explore the unique perspective of a small sample of first-year undergraduate and first-year postgraduate students ( N = 18), on their experience of transitioning to a higher education institution in the UK. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was used to explore their experiences in greater depth. Two superordinate themes are reported here: "Education Dialogues and Scholarship" and "Intercultural Relations and Notions of Difference." The findings suggest that despite advances in institutional practices to support international students' transition to higher education in the UK, more work needs to be done to redress the sociocultural (and other) challenges that continue to exist for international Chinese students.
Examining Chinese Students’ Motivations for Overseas Education and the Implications of the Study Abroad Experiences on Their Transitions to Adulthood

Abstract:Studying overseas is a popular option for many young individuals to undertake as part of their educational journey. Since China has emerged as the world's largest source of international students, Chinese students' motives of pursuing foreign education have gained remarkable scholarly attention. Furthermore, as the cross-border sojourn often occurs in the youthful period of one's life course, the implications of this journey on Chinese youths' transitions to adulthood have also been of interest to recent research. Situated in the field of international education and youth studies, this paper discusses the motivations behind Chinese students' decisions to study abroad and how this international sojourn shapes their transitions to adulthood. Through literature review, this paper found that the target group's study-abroad decision making is influenced by various macro-level drivers, including globalisation, neoliberalism, and China's economic and socio-cultural conditions. From a micro-level perspective, this paper identified that studying overseas is not only a sought-after route to overcome individual academic failures and systemic deficits in China, but also to accrue valuable resources and satisfy the desires to explore the world. Moreover, this paper noticed that with respect to their transitions to adulthood, Chinese youths' study-abroad experiences are fraught with struggles, tensions, and complexities. Specifically, the overseas journeys can both accelerate and delay their adolescence-adulthood pathways in the aspects of physical freedom, self-responsibility, economic independence, as well as marriage. Broadly, this paper offers practical implications on international student recruitment in higher education. It also serves as a basis for future research on international education and youth studies to explore diverse study-abroad destinations and experiences.

Abstract:International education in China is developing rapidly, and the current situation of the international department of public schools, a special category of international schools, is unclear and problematic. This paper analyzes the current situation and problems of the international section of public schools in China from different perspectives: the history and origins of this form of education, the cities where it is located, the quality of the student population, the content of the curriculum, the conflict between Chinese and foreign teaching methods, the conflict between learning modes, the use of learning equipment, the problems of the school management, the international section of public schools in the context of the epidemic, and the changing trends in the destination of study abroad. This paper is a comprehensive analysis of the international education system in public schools, from the perspective of students and those who have experienced it, using a variety of data and concrete analysis based on real-life situations to sort out existing problems and clarify the current situation so that it can be analyzed in greater depth.

Abstract:With the economic development and the progress of globalization and internationalization, some Chinese students start to seek overseas study opportunities and China has become the largest exporter of international students since the year 2009. Successfully accomplishing study overseas is a prior task for Chinese students. This review was designed to understand the situation of Chinese overseas students’ academic adaptation, including factors affecting their academic success and related strategies to facilitate their study. Twenty-one empirical studies were identified to meet the criteria and these studies show various factors such as language capacity, pedagogic differences, social support, etc. Related strategies adopted to cope with academic challenges were also revealed.
