Abstract:Recently, optical bound states in continuum (BICs) incorporated with optical gain have been reported to exhibit lasing. Here, it is shown that each of the four BICs supported by C4v$_{4v}$ symmetric photonic crystal slab can be made to lase, allowing the control over the topological charge of the resulting laser beam. The type of each BIC and their topological charges are identified by imaging the far-field polarization vortices of the lasing signal. Results are compared with experimentally obtained dispersions, finite element method simulations, and multipole decomposition method based on the microscopic polarization currents in the photonic crystal plane. A demonstration of multimode lasing of two non-degenerate BICs with opposite topological charges is presented. The momentum space overlap of the BICs results in a unique polarization pattern. The study provides a generalizable example for engineering the topological properties of coherent light.
Topological charge engineering in lasing bound states in continuum

Abstract: Recently, optical bound states in continuum in various passive photonic crystals have been identified and similar structures incorporated with optical gain have been reported to exhibit lasing. However, no explicit control over the type of lasing BIC has been reported. In this work, we utilize all four fundamental BICs related to the lowest energy Gamma-point of a square photonic crystal lattice. We identify the associated topological charges from experimentally obtained dispersions, finite element method simulations, as well as from spherical decomposition method based on the microscopic polarization currents in the photonic crystal plane. By tailoring the periodicity and the hole diameter of the photonic crystal slab, we selectively bring each of the four BIC resonances to a wavelength regime, where fluorescent IR702 molecules overlaid with the photonic crystal provide sufficient gain for the onset of lasing. We experimentally analyze all four observed lasing BICs by imaging their far-field polarization vortices and their associated topological charges. The results correspond excellently with the transmission results as well as the simulation results in the absence of gain. Finally, we experimentally present a case where the lasing signal reveals the coexistence of two BICs with opposite topological charges, resulting in a unique polarization pattern. We believe our results enable tailoring the properties, such as polarization winding and topological charge of BICs, by a priori design and thus pave the way for a more general utilization of their appealing properties.

Abstract:Topological photonics is considered to be a robust and flexible platform for the design of nanophotonic devices against structural imperfections and performance degradation. Combining with parity-time (PT) symmetry systems based on spatially distributed gain and loss, photonic crystal (PhC) lasers with micron-size carrier reservoirs offer an ideal test bed for lasing mode competition and topological protection in nanophotonic structures. In this study, single topological edge mode (TEM) lasing is demonstrated in PhC lasers with a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice comprised of coupled nanoresonators. By inducing directional loss control, a mode selection strategy is implemented, that achieves single TEM lasing with a side-mode-suppression ratio exceeding 30 dB. One of the TEMs exhibits remarkable robustness against local potential variation introduced by additional loss channels. This strategy integrating both topological protection and PT symmetry in nanophotonics would open up new prospects for the development of on-chip single-mode topological lasers unperturbed by output channels in nanophotonic integrated circuits. Topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lasers using a chain of photonic crystal nano-resonators are demonstrated with controlled directional losses. A non-trivial topological mode can be chosen to lase with high side-mode suppression ratio in originally multi-mode lasing systems with a uniform pumping scheme. The effective combination of non-Hermiticity, topological photonics, and PhC nanostructures provides a powerful tool for on-chip nanophotonic integration. image

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.
High topological charge lasing in quasicrystals

Abstract:Photonic modes exhibiting a polarization winding akin to a vortex possess an integer topological charge. Lasing with topological charge 1 or 2 can be realized in periodic lattices of up to six-fold rotational symmetry. Higher order charges require symmetries not compatible with any two-dimensional Bravais lattice. Here, we experimentally demonstrate lasing with topological charges as high as -5, +7, -17 and +19 in quasicrystals. We discover rich ordered structures of increasing topological charges in the reciprocal space. Our quasicrystal design utilizes group theory in determining electromagnetic field nodes, where lossy plasmonic nanoparticles are positioned to maximize gain. Our results open a new path for fundamental studies of higher-order topological defects, coherent light beams of high topological charge, and realizations of omni-directional, flat-band-like lasing.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PhCs) have been demonstrated as a versatile platform for the study of topological phenomena. The recent discovery of higher-order topological insulators introduces new aspects of topological PhCs that are yet to be explored. Here, we propose an all-dielectric PhC with an unconventional higher-order band topology. Besides the conventional spectral features of gapped edge states and in-gap corner states, topological band theory predicts that the corner boundary of the higher-order topological insulator hosts a 2/3 fractional charge. We demonstrate that in the PhC such a fractional charge can be verified from the local density-of-states of photons, through the concept of local spectral charge as an analog of the local electric charge due to the band filling anomaly in electronic systems. Furthermore, we show that by introducing a disclination in the proposed PhC, localized states and a 2/3 fractional spectral charge emerge around the disclination core. The emergence of the fractional spectral charges and topological boundary modes here, however, is distinct from the known cases; particularly by the 2/3 fractional spectral charges and the unique topological indices. The predicted effects can be readily observed in the state-of-the-art experiments and may lead to potential applications in integrated and quantum photonics. (C) 2021 Chinese Laser Press
Inherent spin-orbit locking in topological bound state in the continuum lasing

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are exotic optical topological singularities that defy the typical radiation within the continuum of radiative modes and carry topological polarization vortices in momentum space. Enabling ultrahigh quality factors, BICs have been applied in realizing lasing and Bose-Einstein condensation via micro-/nano- photonic structures, and their momentum-space vortex topologies have been exploited in passive systems, revealing novel spin-orbit photonic effects. However, as representative topological properties, the spin-orbit-related phenemona of BICs in active systems have not yet been explored. Here, we demonstrate the inherent spin-orbit locking in topological BIC lasing. Utilizing photonic crystal (PhC) slabs with square (C4v) and triangular (C6v) lattices, we achieve distinct spin-orbit locking combinations in topological BIC lasing of +1 and -2 topological charges. These BIC lasing profiles manifest as vortex and high-order anti-vortex polarization configurations, directly tied to the topological properties of BICs. Our experimental results directly reveal the spin-orbit locking phenomena through momentum-space spin-dependent self-interference patterns and real-space spin separations of the lasing emissions. This study not only highlights the inherent spin-orbit-locking behaviours of topological BIC lasing but also opens new possibilities for dynamically switchable orbital angular momentum (OAM) lasing by controlling photonic spin, presenting significant potential for advancements in topological photonic source applications.

Abstract:It is well known that spatial symmetry in a photonic crystal (PhC) slab is capable of creating bound states in the continuum (BICs), which can be characterized by topological charges of polarization vortices. Here, we show that when a PT-symmetric perturbation is introduced into the PhC slab, a new type of BICs (pt-BICs) will arise from each ordinary BIC together with the creation of rings of lasing threshold modes with pt-BICs embedded in these rings. Different from ordinary BICs, the Q-factor divergence rate of a pt-BIC is reduced and anisotropic in momentum space. Also, pt-BICs can even appear at off-high symmetry lines of the Brillouin zone. The pt-BICs also carry topological charges and can be created or annihilated with the total charge conserved. A unified picture on pt-BICs and the associated lasing threshold modes is given based on the temporal coupled mode theory. Our findings reveal the new physics arising from the interplay between PT symmetry and BIC in PhC slabs.

Janus Bound States in the Continuum with Asymmetric Topological Charges and Intrinsic Chirality

Abstract:We propose a novel topological defect called Janus bound states in the continuum (BICs), featuring asymmetric topological charges in upward and downward radiation channels. Our approach involves a photonic crystal slab (PCS) that initially exhibits both out-of-plane and in-plane mirror symmetry, and this PCS possesses one BIC at the $\Gamma$ point and two BICs off the $\Gamma$ point. By introducing perturbations that break the out-of-plane mirror symmetry, the two off-$\Gamma$ BICs decompose into four circularly polarized states (C points) with identical topological charges. Then, we selectively manipulate the four C points associated with downward radiation channel to converge at the at-$\Gamma$ BIC, forming a Janus BIC with Janus topological charges. By further introducing in-plane mirror symmetry perturbation, we can bring two of the C points with the same handedness and identical topological charges for upward radiation to merge into the Janus BIC. This process results in a Janus chiral BIC which exhibits large intrinsic chirality and an infinite Q factor. Janus BICs can induce distinct Pancharatnam-Berry phase singularities in momentum space for different incident channels, providing a new approach to control optical angular momentum. Janus chiral BICs hold promise in enhancing direction-dependent and spin-dependent asymmetric light-matter interaction, opening new pathways for improving chirality-dependent operation for on-chip devices.

Abstract:Abstract Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized states despite in a radiation continuum, rendering the ultra-high quality factor for enhanced light–matter interactions and supporting exotic topological properties. So far, most of studied BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs are only vertically localized, i.e. allowing propagations in the plane of slab therein but forbidding radiations, and the density of optical states (DOS) at their frequencies is limited due to the steep dispersion characteristics. Here, we report a BIC existing on a flatband of symmetry-broken PhC slab. The flatband, associated with largely reduced group velocity, significantly sharpens the DOS at the frequency of BIC, which can be realized via finely controlling broken vertical symmetry in the PhC slab. The effect of broken symmetry is revealed in a simple effective Hamiltonian near the second-order Γ point of such system. Our results show the simultaneous engineering of dispersion and leaky characteristics of modes, offering new opportunities to boost light–matter interactions and to enhance the performance of photonic devices.

Abstract:Arbitrary polarized vortex beam induced by polarization singularity offers a new platform for both classical optics and quantum entanglement applications. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been demonstrated to be associated with topological charge and vortex polarization singularities in momentum space. For conventional symmetric photonic crystal slabs (PhCSs), BIC is enclosed by linearly polarized far fields with winding angle of 2π, which is unfavorable for high-capacity and multi-functionality integration-optics applications. Here, we show that by breaking σz-symmetry of the PhCS, asymmetry in upward and downward directions and arbitrarily polarized BIC can be realized with a bilayer-twisted PhCS. It exhibits elliptical polarization states with constant ellipticity angle at every point in momentum space within the vicinity of BIC. The topological nature of BIC reflects on the orientation angle of polarization state, with a topological charge of 1 for any value of ellipticity angle. Full coverage of Poincaré sphere (i.e., [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) and higher-order Poincaré sphere can be realized by tailoring the twist angles. Our findings may open up new avenues for applications in structured light, quantum optics, and twistronics for photons.
Topologically Protected Plasmonic Bound States in the Continuum

Abstract:Experimental realizations of bound states in the continuum (BICs) with strong robustness and advanced maneuverability in optical loss systems remain a long-standing challenge in nanophotonics. Here, we propose and fabricate a paradigm of diatomic metagratings incorporating the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model into the design of plasmonic nanocavities to demonstrate optical resonators with a continuous "quasi-BICs (qBICs)-BICs-qBICs" transition. These resonators feature a topological band inversion, making high-quality (Q) resonances immune to the perturbation of incident angles and geometrical parameters. Furthermore, we strive to establish theoretical models to verify the topological nature of BICs-inspired resonances and introduce nonlinear optical probes to quantify strongly enhanced local fields at high-Q resonances. Our findings may provide a simple yet feasible design strategy for facilitating the dissipationless manipulation of surface/interface-enhanced light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, substantially broadening the functional scope of metaphotonics.
Topological photonic states and directional emission of the light exiting from the photonic topological structure composed of two dimensional honeycomb photonic crystals with different point group symmetries

Abstract:In this work, we investigate a two dimensional honeycomb photonic crystal (2D HPC) with C_6 symmetry point group, which is known to demonstrate a double Dirac cone at k=0 of the Brillion zone. Then we design two deformed PCs from the original one, by modifying the radius of the cylinders from the unit cell center in which the symmetry C_6 is reduced to the C_3\u{psion} group and new structure exhibits the photonic topological edge states. Consequently, the topologically protected propagation of the edge states with back scattering-immune feature is observed along the interfaces of the two deformed PCs without any defects or including cavities or bend. Furthermore, the directional surface modes exit from the photonic topological insulators (PTIs) including various defects, is investigated. As well as, we explore the propagation and coupling of light through the coupled photonic topological insulators (CPTIs).

Abstract:Plasmonic lattices of metal nanoparticles have emerged as an effective platform for strong light-matter coupling, lasing, and Bose-Einstein condensation. However, the full potential of complex unit cell structures has not been exploited. On the other hand, bound states in continuum (BICs) have attracted attention, as they provide topologically protected optical modes with diverging quality factors. Here, we show that quadrumer nanoparticle lattices enable lasing in a quasi-BIC mode with a highly out-of-plane character. By combining theory with polarization-resolved measurements of the emission, we show that the lasing mode has a topological charge. Our analysis reveals that the mode is primarily polarized out-of-plane as a result of the quadrumer structure. The quality factors of the out-of-plane BIC modes of the quadrumer array can be exceedingly high. Our results unveil the power of complex multiparticle unit cells in creating topologically protected high-Q modes in periodic nanostructures.

Abstract:Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have emerged as new optoelectronic materials in the two dimensional (2D) limit, exhibiting rich spin-valley interplays, tunable excitonic effects, and strong light-matter interactions. An essential yet undeveloped ingredient for many photonic applications is the manipulation of its light emission. Here we demonstrate the control of excitonic light emission from monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) in an integrated photonic structure, achieved by transferring one monolayer onto a photonic crystal (PhC) with a cavity. In addition to the observation of greatly enhanced (~60 times) photoluminescence of WSe2 and an effectively coupled cavity-mode emission, we are able to redistribute the emitted photons both polarly and azimuthally in the far field through designing PhC structures, as revealed by momentum-resolved microscopy. A 2D optical antenna is thus constructed. Our work suggests a new way of manipulating photons in hybrid 2D photonics, important for future energy efficient optoelectronics and 2D nano-lasers.

Exploiting extraordinary topological optical forces at bound states in the continuum

Abstract:Polarization singularities and topological vortices in photonic crystal slabs centered at bound states in the continuum (BICs) can be attributed to zero amplitude of polarization vectors. We show that such topological features are also observed in optical forces within the vicinity of BIC, around which the force vectors wind in the momentum space. The topological force carries force topological charge and can be used for trapping and repelling nanoparticles. By tailoring asymmetry of the photonic crystal slab, topological force will contain spinning behavior and shifted force zeros, which can lead to three-dimensional asymmetric trapping. Several off-Γ BICs generate multiple force zeros with various force distribution patterns. Our findings introduce the concepts of topology to optical force around BICs and create opportunities to realize optical force vortices and enhanced reversible forces for manipulating nanoparticles and fluid flow.

Selective activation of topological valley corner states in C3-symmetric photonic crystals

Abstract:Higher-order topological insulators have drawn great research attention in nanophotonics due to their ability to both support robust edge states and lower dimensional corner states. In this work, we present a theoretical proposal for achieving topologically switchable and valley-selective corner states based on two-dimensional C3-symmetric photonic crystals (PCs), with breaking of inversion symmetry. Through the concatenation of two valley PCs with contrasting topological indices, we demonstrate the emergence of two types of valley-locked chiral topological edge states resulting from the valley–valley interaction. More importantly, we find that the system exhibits two distinct types of corner states, characterized by strong robustness and high localization, when the PCs are spliced at a 60° angle. However, the corner states are absent when the splicing angle is set as 120°. According to the theoretical analysis, the selective activation of topological valley corner states is related to the sign flip of valley Chern number at the corner. Based on this feature, we further propose a topological photonic switching device, in which the corner can be lighted up or off selectively. By combining the benefits of higher-order topology and valley degree of freedom, our work provides an efficient and flexible method for light manipulation.

Abstract:The advance of topological photonics has heralded a revolution for manipulating light as well as for the development of novel photonic devices such as topological insulator lasers. Here, we demonstrate topological lasing of circular polarization in a polymer-cholesteric liquid crystal (P-CLC) superlattice, tunable in the visible wavelength regime. By use of the femtosecond-laser direct-writing and self-assembling techniques, we establish the P-CLC superlattice with a controlled mini-band structure and a topological interface defect, thereby achieving a low threshold for robust topological lasing at about 0.4 uJ. Thanks to the chiral liquid crystal, not only the emission wavelength is thermally tuned, but the circularly polarized lasing is readily achieved. Our results bring about the possibility to realize compact and integrated topological photonic devices at low cost, as well as to engineer an ideal platform for exploring topological physics that involves light-matter interaction in soft-matter environments.
