Abstract:The electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) demonstrates a process of NH3 synthesis from N2 molecules under ambient conditions, which is environmentally friendly and recyclable. However, it requires an efficient electrocatalyst to activate inert N2 molecules, which is still difficult to satisfy. Recently, as an active NRR electrocatalyst and a typical metal oxide, CeO2 has featured ultrahigh thermal stability and the ability to apply heteroatom doping, which is an imperative approach importing oxygen vacancy by replacing metal ions with selective elements to greatly influence the activity of catalysts. Here, we analyze the unique properties of manganese dopants in modulating the activity of CeO2 nanospheres for NRR. It attains a larger NH3 yield of 27.79 μg h-1 mgcat-1 and a higher Faradaic efficiency of 9.1% than pure CeO2 at -0.30 V in 0.1 M HCl, with high electrochemical and structure stability. With calculations by density functional theory, the performance enhancement of Mn-doped CeO2 is also proved mathematically.

Abstract:Producing ammonia (NH3) by electrocatalytic N2 fixation is a promising and environmentally friendly strategy, in comparison to the Haber-Bosch process with high consumption of energy and CO2 emissions. Because of the extremely high bond energy, it is indispensable to explore valid catalysts to activate the triple bond. In this paper, Cr-doped CeO2 nanorods are developed to serve as non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for an electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction. Introducing Cr into the catalyst leads to an increase of the oxygen vacancies. In a 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution, the Cr0.1CeO2 nanorods achieve a high Faradaic efficiency (3.84%) and a large NH3 yield (16.82 μg h-1 mgcat.-1) at -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. The Cr0.1CeO2 nanorods also exhibit high stability during the reaction.

Abstract:As a sustainable and environmentally friendly route, electrochemical N-2 reduction has been expected to replace the traditional N-2 fixation process of Haber-Bosch, which is energy-consuming and capital-intensive. In this work, we demonstrate that CeO2 nanorod with oxygen vacancies achieves a great enhancement for NRR with excellent selectivity and stability. Such electrocatalyst delivers NH3 yield of 16.4 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) at -0.5 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and Faradaic efficiency of 3.7% at -0.4 V vs RHE using aqueous 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte, higher than that of pristine CeO2 counterpart (5.4 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1); 2.1%).

Abstract:Electrochemical N-2 reduction (N2RR) in aqueous solutions under ambient conditions is extremely challenging; thus, a rational design of electrocatalytic centers is required to effectively adsorb and activate N-2. Herein, we report Ru cluster-doped, oxygen vacancy-rich CeO2 (Ru/CeO2-V-O) nanorods as an efficient N-2 reduction electrocatalyst. The high-density oxygen vacancies inside CeO2 are beneficial for the adsorption of N-2, and the unsaturated, low-valence Ru nanoclusters provide active sites for N-2 activation and subsequent electron transfer for N-2 reduction. The Ru/CeO2-V-O catalyst exhibits a high ammonia production rate of 9.87 x 10(-8) mmol s(-1) cm(-2) and a partial current density of 32 mu A cm(-2) at -0.25 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 0.05 M H2SO4 solution, corresponding to a faradaic efficiency of 11.7%. Our work suggests that the synergistic effects between Ru nanoclusters and oxygen vacancies in CeO2 for efficient N-2 fixation.
Formation of Interfacial Cu-[OX ]-Ce Structures with Oxygen Vacancies for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction powered by renewable electricity is a promising strategy to produce ammonia. However, the lack of efficient yet cheap electrocatalysts remains the biggest challenge. Herein, hybrid Cu2O-CeO2-C nanorods are prepared on copper mesh through a metal-organic framework template route. The Cu-loaded Ce-MOF is thermally converted to Cu2O-CeO2 heterojunctions with interfacial Cu-[O-X]-Ce structures embedded in carbon. Theoretical calculations reveal the lower formation energy of oxygen vacancies in Cu-[O-X]-Ce structures than in the Cu2O or CeO2 phase. The Cu-[O-X]-Ce structures with oxygen vacancies enable the formation of interfacial electron-rich Cu(I) species which show significantly enhanced performance toward electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction with an NH3 yield of 6.37 x 10(-3) mu g s(-1) cm(-2) and a Faradaic efficiency of 18.21% in 0.10 m KOH at -0.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. This work highlights the importance of modulation of charge distribution of Cu-based electrocatalysts to boost the activity toward nitrogen reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical N-2 reduction reaction (NRR) is an environmentally benign and sustainable approach for NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions, which needs efficient electrocatalyst to meet the enormous challenge of activating the inert N-2 molecule. Recently, TiO2 emerges as an active NRR electrocatalyst with advantages of abundance, nontoxicity, and high thermal stability. Heteroatom doping is an effective oxygen vacancy introduction strategy to manufacture unique electron and structure properties of metal oxides, which will greatly influence the catalysts' activity. In this work, we developed Mn-doped TiO2 nanospheres (Mn-TiO2) for electrochemical NRR. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, Mn-TiO2 shows a large NH3 yield rate of 20.05 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) and a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.93%, which are much higher than undoped TiO2. The mechanism of performance improvement is uncovered by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:NH3 plays an indispensable role in agriculture, fertilizer production as well as in the chemical industry. However, its large‐scale production still relies deeply on the century‐old Haber–Bosch process under high temperature and pressure along with greenhouse gas emission and fossil fuel consumption. The electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N2 reduction reactions (NRRs) for NH3 production are favorable approaches to avoid these issues because they are carbon‐neutral and energy‐saving. Recently, the nonprecious metal oxides (NPMO) have gathered the most attention due to their ease of synthesis, controllable stability, lower cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, the recent advances in NPMO electrocatalysts and photocatalysts for the NRR are narrated and the strategies to improve the poor NRR activity of pristine NPMOs by heteroatom doping to engineer their surface‐active sites and introduction of oxygen vacancies are highlighted. A brief summary of and the future perspective on this research field are also presented.

Abstract:Electrochemical N-2 reduction emerges as a promising substitute to the Haber-Bosch process for ambient NH3 synthesis, but it is a tough task to develop efficient catalysts. Here, we propose a CeO2 nanoparticle decorated three-dimensional carbon skeleton derived from Juncus as an active and stable electrocatalyst for N-2-to-NH3 conversion. In N-2-saturated 0.1 M Na2SO4, this nanohybrid attains a large NH3 yield of 33.4 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) with a faradaic efficiency of 6.1% at -0.6 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, it also possesses favorable durability.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy defect engineering is currently an effective strategy to enhance the performance of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO. In our work, ZnO with oxygen vacancies defects by Ce3+ doping were obtained through solvothermal method. The oxygen vacancies defects concentration could be controlled by varying the Ce3+ dopant concentration, which initially increased then decreased. And the CO2ER performance of as-prepared samples is found to be closely dependent with the concentration of oxygen vacancy in the as-prepared CexZn1-xO. The optimized CO2ER to CO performances can be obtained from Ce0.016Zn0.984O with the highest oxygen vacancy concentrations, which exhibited the highest performance (current density 24 mA cm−2 and Faradaic efficiency 88% for CO) at -1.0 V versus RHE. Through CO2 isotherm adsorption curve and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD) test, it was proved that the high concentration oxygen vacancy of Ce0.016Zn0.984O was beneficial to improve the CO2 adsorption and activation. This study proposes a strategy aimed at obtaining a high-performance catalyst for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction by adjusting the concentration of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Industrially, large-scale NH3 production is achieved by the Haber-Bosch process, which operates under harsh reaction conditions with abundant energy consumption and CO2 emission. Electrochemical N-2 reduction is an eco-friendly and energy-saving method for artificial N-2 to NH3 fixation under ambient reaction conditions. Herein, we demonstrate that ZrS2 nanofibers with a sulfur vacancy (ZrS2 NF-Vs) behave as an efficient electrocatalyst for ambient N-2 reduction to NH3 with excellent selectivity. In 0.1 M HCl, this ZrS2 NF-Vs catalyst attains a large NH3 yield of 30.72 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) and a high faradaic efficiency of 10.33% at -0.35 V and -0.30 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively. It also shows high electrochemical and structural stability. The density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Vs facilitates the adsorption and activation of N-2 molecules.

Abstract:For over a century, NH3 synthesis via the Haber-Bosch process has brought huge energy costs and high CO2 emission. The electrochemical N-2 reduction reaction is an environmentally-benign alternative, which can be driven by renewable energy. In this work, CeO2 nanoparticle-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (CeO2-rGO) behave as an efficient non-noble-metal N-2 reduction reaction electrocatalyst with excellent selectivity. In 0.1 M Na2SO4, CeO2-rGO achieves a high faradaic efficiency of 4.78% and a large NH3 yield of 16.98 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) at -0.7 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. The catalytic mechanism was explored using density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 − RR) emerges as a highly efficient approach toward ammonia synthesis and degrading NO 3 − contaminant. In our study, CeO 2 nanoparticles with oxygen vacancies (V O ) decorated N-doped carbon nanorods on graphite paper (CeO 2− x @NC/GP) were demonstrated as a highly efficient NO 3 − RR electrocatalyst. The CeO 2− x @NC/GP catalyst manifests a significant NH 3 yield up to 712.75 μmol·h −1 cm −2 at −0.8 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and remarkable Faradaic efficiency of 92.93% at −0.5 V vs. RHE under alkaline conditions, with excellent durability. Additionally, an assembled Zn-NO 3 − battery with CeO 2− x @NC/GP as cathode accomplishes a high-power density of 3.44 mWcm −2 and a large NH 3 yield of 145.08 μmol·h −1 cm −2 . Density functional theory results further expose the NO 3 − reduction mechanism on CeO 2 (111) surface with V O .

Abstract:NH3 is one of the most important chemicals with a wide range of applications. NH3 is mainly produced via the Haber-Bosch process, which leads to large energy consumption and carbon emission. Electrochemical reduction has emerged as an environmentally-benign and sustainable alternative for artificial N2 fixation under ambient conditions, but needs materials to effectively catalyze the N2 reduction reaction (NRR). In this communication, we report that β-FeOOH nanorods behave as an efficient and durable NRR electrocatalyst. In 0.5 M LiClO4, such an electrocatalyst achieves a high NH3 yield of 23.32 μg h-1 mgcat.-1 and a faradaic efficiency of 6.7%, outperforming most reported aqueous-based NRR electrocatalysts under ambient conditions. Notably, this catalyst also shows good electrochemical stability and excellent selectivity. The catalytic mechanism of the NRR on the FeOOH(110) surface is further discussed using density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen-to-ammonia conversion by the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions is regarded as a potential approach to tackle the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process with excessive CO2 emission. However, the NRR is still restricted by low faradaic efficiency and NH3 yield, which is due to the chemical inertness of N-related groups for efficient adsorption/activation on the electrocatalysts. Here, a series of spinel-structured nanosheet wrapped hollow nitrogen-doped carbon polyhedra with abundant oxygen vacancies are constructed successfully. From theoretical aspects, these materials show increased charge density on their surface for enhanced capture and activation of N-2 molecules. As a result, oxygen vacancy-rich NiCo2O4 on hollow N-carbon polyhedra (V-o-rich NiCo2O4@HNCP) shows outstanding electrocatalytic NRR performance with high production yield (NH3: 4.1 mu g h(-1) cm(-2)/17.8 mu g h(-1) mg(-1); faradaic efficiency: 5.3%) and high stability under ambient conditions and is superior to the counterpart oxygen vacancy-poor electrocatalysts. Oxygen vacancy engineering introduces a new concept for rational design of advanced NRR catalysts for energy conversion systems.

Abstract:One-step generation and modulation of oxygen vacancies by enriching zinc to substitute chromium ions in ZnCr2O4 nanofibers are proposed to reduce nitrate to ammonia, which meanwhile induces the formation of zero-valent zinc. The catalyst with the most oxygen vacancies achieves an optimal NH3 yield rate of 20.36 mg h(-1) mg(cat)(-1). and Faradaic efficiency of 90.21 % at -1.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and it also has excellent long-term durability and structural stability. Theoretical calculations reveal oxygen vacancies are more favorable to form in ZnCr2O4, which shift the D-band center (epsilon(d)) of Cr and Zn to higher and lower energy levels, respectively. The free energy for the whole reaction on ZnCr2O4 shows a continuous decreasing tendency, indicating the reaction can spontaneously take place. The results are expected to pave a new avenue to rationally design defective non-noble catalysts for catalyzing nitrate to produce ammonia.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions is emerging as a potential alternative to the Haber-Bosch process when cost and environmental protection are considered. Furthermore, the grand challenge on N-2 activation encourages development of efficient NRR catalysts. Herein, we report the positive effect of oxygen vacancies in Ta2O5 nanorods for effective N-2 reduction. Density functional theory calculations reveal that N-2 can be efficiently activated at the O-vacancy site via coordination with two Ta atoms adjacent to the O-vacancy. Electrocatalytic NRR experiments verify the superior catalytic performance of O-vacancy-engineered Ta2O5 nanorods (NH3 yield, 15.9 mu g h(-1) mg(cat)(-1); Faradaic efficiency, 8.9%). Monodisperse Cu Cluster-Loaded Defective ZrO2 Nanofibers for Ambient N2 Fixation to NH3

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction to ammonia has attracted increasing attention as it is more energy-saving and eco-friendly. For this endeavor, the development of high-efficiency electrocatalysts with excellent selectivity and stability is indispensable to break up the stable covalent triple bond in nitrogen. In this study, we report monodisperse Cu clusters loaded on defective ZrO2 nanofibers for nitrogen reduction under mild conditions. Such an electrocatalyst achieves an NH3 yield rate of 12.13 mu g h(-1) mg(cat).(-1) and an optimal Faradaic efficiency of 13.4% at -0.6 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode in 0.1 M Na2SO4. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the N-2 molecule was reduced to NH3 at the Cu active site with an ideal overpotential. Meanwhile, the interaction between bonding and antibonding of the Cu-N bond promotes activation of N-2 and maintains a low desorption barrier.
Oxygen Vacancy Engineering of MOF-Derived Zn-Doped Co 3 O 4 Nanopolyhedrons for Enhanced Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:Introducing oxygen vacancy (Vo) has been considered as an effective and significant method to accelerate the sluggish electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). In this work, a series of bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on ZIF-67 and ZIF-8 with varied ratios of Co/Zn have been applied as precursors to prepare Vo-rich Zn-doped Co3O4 nanopolyhedrons (Zn–Co3O4) by a low-temperature oxidation strategy. Zn–Co3O4 presents an ammonia yield of 22.71 μg h–1 mgcat.–1 with a high faradaic efficiency of 11.9% for NRR under ambient conditions. The remarkable catalytic performances are believed to result from the plentiful Vo as the Lewis acid sites and electron-rich Co sites to promote the adsorption and dissociation of N2 molecules. Remarkably, Zn–Co3O4 also demonstrates a high electrochemical stability.
