Abstract:An axial adjustable common-path interferometric phase imaging system with simple structure is proposed based on the theory of interference imaging. In this design, making full use of the reversibility of the optical path and the reflection and refraction characteristics of the splitter prism, the incident beam is split into two parallel beams by a prism. One beam is incident on the sample and reflected by the reflecting stage as object light, and the other beam is directly reflected as reference light. The interferograms can be captured by combining object beam with reference beam through the same beam splitter. The interferometer can achieve different types of interference by adjusting the angle between the layer of the beam splitter prism and the optic axis. Taking Fourier transform and three steps phase shift norm method as examples, the phase of the interference fringe is recovered, and the performance of the system is evaluated by the analysis of the results. The feasibility of the proposed design for biological cells phase imaging is demonstrated. The system has the characteristics of simple structure, easy operation and low system error, which can provide an easy and simple method for label-free morphological detection of homogeneous cell.
Coherent Diffraction Imaging Using Structured Phase Modulation

Abstract:Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is a kind of computational technique seeking to reconstruct a complex wavefront from the measured intensity. To solve the phase retrieval problem, phase modulation is introduced to be a physical constraint. In this work, the alternative structured phase modulation (ASPM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) are used to be the physical constraints. The ASPM can act as the phase grating. The modulated intensities are concentrated, which can be captured with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). OAM is recently employed as a type of reliable modulation. The topological charge is robust during propagating in the atmosphere. The maximum value of the spectrum intensity is reduced by a factor of 170 under OAM modulation when topological charge is 50. The stagnation can be avoided using multiple ASPM and OAM modulations. The complex wavefront can be robustly reconstructed from redundant measurements without a priori knowledge.

Abstract:This paper proposed a diffractive imaging technology called rotary astigmatic diffractive imaging (RADI). The system uses a rotatable cylindrical lens for rotary astigmatic modulation and a camera for collecting the diffractive patterns distorted in different angles. Then a field can be reconstructed with the patterns by an iterative algorithm. Compared with the original astigmatic diffractive imaging system, our simulations show RADI system has the greater performance of convergence with the same number of constrained patterns. In addition, it is easy for RADI to increase the number of diffraction measurements to accelerate the convergence further. Considering the center of the cylindrical lens does not coincide with the center of rotation, a calibration method is proposed. An optical vortex of charge two is reconstructed experimentally demonstrating the system can solve the problem of unique phase recovery. Besides, the reconstructions of a USAF resolution chart with different numbers of constrained patterns shows the rate of convergence increases obviously with the increase of the number of diffraction measurements. The reconstruction shows the resolution of our system is about 14.25 lp/mm, which is 60% of the diffraction limited resolution. Our RADI can provide a high-performance way but with simple setup to realize field reconstruction.

Abstract:Conventional phase retrieval algorithms for coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) require many iterations to deliver reasonable results, even using a known mask as a strong constraint in the imaging setup, an approach known as masked CDI. This paper proposes a fast and robust phase retrieval method for masked CDI based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We propose a plug-and-play ADMM to incorporate the prior knowledge of the mask, but note that commonly used denoisers are not suitable as regularizers for complex-valued latent images directly. Therefore, we develop a regularizer based on the structure tensor and Harris corner detector. Compared with conventional phase retrieval methods, our technique can achieve comparable reconstruction results with less time for the masked CDI. Moreover, validation experiments on real in situ CDI data for both intensity and phase objects show that our approach is more than 100 times faster than the baseline method to reconstruct one complex-valued image, making it possible to be used in challenging situations, such as imaging dynamic objects. Furthermore, phase retrieval results for single diffraction patterns show the robustness of the proposed ADMM.

Abstract:Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) has emerged as a thriving field promising applications in materials and biological sciences. Transmission geometry is adopted in most CDI methods, which is not suitable for opaque structures or objects of interest comprising only surfaces or interfaces. Here, we present a reflective CDI system using binary random sampling patterns, which extends the application range to bulk and opaque samples. Instead of resorting to an array of lenslets in Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensing or a reference beam in interferometry, the spatial information is captured by illuminating the object with four patterns generated with a digital micromirror device (DMD). On this basis, an adaptive algorithm for updating the support constraints in the iteration process is proposed to solve the problem of pattern deformation caused by the height variations of the sample surface. Our method achieves high-speed modulation, high-accuracy and high-fidelity quantitative phase imaging (QPI). The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated and real experiments.

Abstract:Coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) is a lensless, high-resolution imaging method. In order to overcome the problems of poor-quality image and slow convergence of iterative algorithm in traditional CDI, here multimode fiber source is selected as the lighting source to replace the traditional plane-wave. A phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) is used as a negative lens instead of a positive lens in a 4f imaging unit. The diffraction field can be rapidly changed at a very short distance so as to realize a fast convergence and then save a lot of iteration times. This proposed setup has advantages such as a simpler structure and static recording. Both simulations and visible-light experiments demonstrate the good imaging quality and robustness of this method.

Abstract:Coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (CXDI) experiments are intrinsically limited by shot noise, a lack of prior knowledge about the sample's support, and missing measurements due to the experimental geometry. We propose a flexible, iterative phase retrieval framework that allows for accurate modeling of Gaussian or Poissonian noise statistics, modified support updates, regularization of reconstructed signals, and handling of missing data in the observations. The proposed method is efficiently solved using alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and is demonstrated to consistently outperform state-of-the-art algorithms for low-photon phase retrieval from CXDI experiments, both for simulated diffraction patterns and for experimental measurements.

Abstract:Coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) is a lensless, high-resolution imaging method. Then a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) is used as a negative lens instead of a positive lens in a 4f imaging system for the advantage of larger detection space. This proposed setup has many advantages such as a simpler structure and static recording. The comparison experiments with plane waves confirm that our proposed method has higher reconstruction resolution and smaller iteration errors.

Abstract:This paper focuses on solving the diffractive phase retrieval problem of arbitrary complex objects by modulating the object phase. Unlike classical diffraction interferometry such as point-diffraction and phase-shifting interferometry, this method does not require precise location, size, information on the phase shifting area, or direct reference waves. By considering regional division and small area phase shift on the object plane, one can obtain relatively accurate object reconstruction with few algebraic calculations. To simplify the scheme, a structured phase grate is designed to split the diffraction beam into four parts so that quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is achieved simultaneously with a combined phase mask. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that this method is applicable to real-time QPI for coherent diffraction imaging (CDI).

Abstract:Phase retrieval is a long-standing problem in imaging when only the intensity of the wavefield can be recorded. Coherent diffraction imaging is a lensless technique that uses iterative algorithms to recover amplitude and phase contrast images from diffraction intensity data. For general samples, phase retrieval from a single-diffraction pattern has been an algorithmic and experimental challenge. Here we report a method of phase retrieval that uses a known modulation of the sample exit wave. This coherent modulation imaging method removes inherent ambiguities of coherent diffraction imaging and uses a reliable, rapidly converging iterative algorithm involving three planes. It works for extended samples, does not require tight support for convergence and relaxes dynamic range requirements on the detector. Coherent modulation imaging provides a robust method for imaging in materials and biological science, while its single-shot capability will benefit the investigation of dynamical processes with pulsed sources, such as X-ray free-electron lasers.

Abstract:Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is a powerful approach to study dynamics associated with both thickness and refractive index fluctuations. In this work, we propose a coherent diffractive QPI scheme based on single-pixel imaging structure and coherent modulation imaging. In this scheme, digital micro-mirror device with high refresh rate is employed for structured illumination. Synchronously, a single point detector is used to perform mode selected measurement of diffraction intensity. Based on the illumination structure and point signals, phase imaging is realized using a reweighted amplitude flow phase retrieval algorithm. Non-interference modality omits the reference arm, which simplifies the apparatus and improves the system robustness. This proposed technique is demonstrated by QPI of both digital binary and grayscale objects. The three-dimensional profile measurement of a plano-convex lens shows the possibility of phase retrieval for real objects. Accordingly our technique will promote the application of single-pixel phase imaging to biomedical imaging, x-ray diffraction imaging and three-dimensional profilometry.

Abstract:Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is a promising imaging technique revealing most of the information from diffraction measurements. An ideal CDI should reconstruct complex-valued object from a single-shot far-field diffraction without any priori information about the target. To realize the ideal CDI, we propose a class of parameter-robust illumination pattern. A direct phase optimizing algorithm is also raised here to improve the performance of phase retrieval in strong noise. Experimental result demonstrates the efficiency of our scheme in practical noisy measurement for complex-valued target.

Abstract:In coherent diffraction imaging systems, mulplex measurement on unknown object can enhance the quality of output image. We apply angular mulplexing scheme to capture several diffracting images. A tilt diffraction model is used for addressing the illumination beam in the imaging process. And an iterative phase retrieval algorithm is desingend and adopted to recover the image of sample. Numerical simulation results are provied to test the imaging method. This approach can be used to enhance the quality of reconstructed images in coherent diffraction imaging.

Abstract:Complex-field imaging is indispensable for numerous applications at wavelengths from X-ray to THz, with amplitude describing transmittance (or reflectivity) and phase revealing intrinsic structure of the target object. Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) employs iterative phase retrieval algorithms to process diffraction measurements and is the predominant non-interferometric method to image complex fields. However, the working spectrum of CDI is quite narrow, because the diffraction measurements on which it relies require dense array detection with ultra-high dynamic range. Here we report a single-pixel CDI technique that works for a wide waveband. A single-pixel detector instead of an array sensor is employed in the far field for detection. It repeatedly records the DC-only component of the diffracted wavefront scattered from an object as it is illuminated by a sequence of binary modulation patterns. This decreases the measurements' dynamic range by several orders of magnitude. We employ an efficient single-pixel phase-retrieval algorithm to jointly recover the object's 2D amplitude and phase maps from the 1D intensity-only measurements. No a priori object information is needed in the recovery process. We validate the technique's quantitative phase imaging nature using both calibrated phase objects and biological samples, and demonstrate its wide working spectrum with both 488-nm visible light and 980-nm near-infrared light. Our approach paves the way for complex-field imaging in a wider waveband where 2D detector arrays are not available, with broad applications in life and material sciences.

Abstract:As a powerful lensless imaging method, coherent diffractive imaging reconstructs an object from its diffraction pattern by computational phase retrieval algorithm. The reconstruction quality relies heavily on the coherence of the illumination and suffers from artifacts or fails under partially coherent imaging conditions, such as the illumination by broadband or multi-wavelength source. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot coherent diffractive imaging of multi-wavelength illumination by using sparse representation and modulation optimization. Sparse representation is utilized in the phase retrieval algorithm to reduce the ambiguity of solutions caused by multi-wavelength aliasing. Furthermore, phase modulation is optimized by maximum likelihood estimation based on Cramér–Rao lower bound and is applied to encode sufficient information in diffraction patterns. Simulations and experiments have been complemented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A different x-ray phase contrast imaging technique based on the combination of structured illumination and an optimized hybrid input-output algorithm for phase and amplitude retrieval is presented and discussed. Based on a modified and flexible experimental setup, compared to standard propagation-based x-ray imaging setups, the method we propose here represents a real advance in the phase-contrast imaging technique relating to the determination of the phase and amplitude distribution. Moreover, in coherent diffractive imaging applications, the proposed technique may yield high spatial resolution with currently available imaging detectors.

Abstract:Aberrations in the optical components and misalignments in the optical system cause a background phase in the coherent illumination. To reconstruct the object phase, the background phase illuminating the object must be measured and subtracted. For diffraction imaging and in-line holography, the traditional phase retrieval method reconstructs the phase diffracting from clear edges. However, it falls into stagnation when solving a background phase slowly varying in the spatial domain. In this study, we propose to solve the background phase using a modulation-based phase retrieval method. Alternative structured phase modulation (ASPM) can be the phase constraint to avoid stagnation when solving the background phase without clear edges. With ASPM, the background phase in the experiment can be efficiently retrieved when 16 phase patterns are employed. The ASPM acts as a phase grating to concentrate the intensities and provides robustness to noise. Compared to the conventional random phase modulations, the ASPM method had a smaller error value in the reconstruction iterations, which leads to a better reconstruction quality. After measuring and subtracting the background phase, the object phase was retrieved using a coherent diffraction imaging system. A phase plate can be accurately reconstructed under three different background phases.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a noniterative diffractive imaging method for reconstructing the complex-valued transmission function of an object illuminated by spatially partially coherent light from the far-field diffraction pattern. Our method is based on a pinhole array mask, which is specially designed such that the correlation function in the mask plane can be obtained directly by inverse Fourier transforming the diffraction pattern. Compared to the traditional iterative diffractive imaging methods using spatially partially coherent illumination, our method is noniterative and robust to the degradation of the spatial coherence of the illumination. In addition to diffractive imaging, the proposed method can also be applied to spatial coherence property characterization, e.g., free-space optical communication and optical coherence singularity measurement.

Abstract:Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI) is an experimental technique to get images of isolated structures by recording the light scattered off the sample. Thanks to the extremely bright and short coherent light pulses provided by X-ray Free Electron Lasers, CDI makes it possible to study nanostructures in the gas phase and get time-resolved snapshots of their ultrafast dynamics with unprecedented resolution. In principle, the sample density can be recovered from the scattered light field through a straightforward Fourier Transform operation. However, only the amplitude of the field is recorded, while the phase is lost during the measurement process and has to be retrieved by means of suitable, well-established, phase retrieval algorithms. We present the Memetic Phase Retrieval (MPR) method, an improved approach to the phase retrieval problem, which makes use of a combination of existing phase retrieval algorithms and evolutionary algorithms to mitigate the shortcomings of conventional approaches. We benchmark the method on experimental data acquired in two experimental campaigns at SwissFEL and European XFEL. Imaging results on isolated nanostructures reveal considerable stability of the algorithm's behavior on the input parameters, as well as the capability of identifying the solution in challenging conditions. A user-friendly implementation of the MPR method is released as open-source software, aiming at being a reference tool for the FEL imaging community.

Abstract:A moveable lens is used for determining amplitude and phase on the object plane. The extended fractional Fourier transform is introduced to address the single lens imaging. We put forward a fast algorithm for the transform by convolution. Combined with parallel iterative phase retrieval algorithm, it is applied to reconstruct the complex amplitude of the object. Compared with inline holography, the implementation of our method is simple and easy. Without the oversampling operation, the computational load is less. Also the proposed method has a superiority of accuracy over the direct focusing measurement for the imaging of small size objects.
