Abstract:ABSTRACT Numerous landslide accidents lead to thousands of casualties each year and pose great threats to residents nearby in China. Landslide monitoring and early warning are of great significance. As a deep deformation monitoring method, acoustic emission (AE) monitoring technology is expected to realize the goals of early warning and cost saving. To uncover the mechanisms of AE waveguide, this paper chooses a representative element and establishes a series of models by the discrete element method (DEM) to simulate the reaction between the waveguide and landslide. The AE and mechanical parameters are recorded simultaneously. For the landslide geological characteristics, the mass mechanical properties and the surface structure parameters are considered. The roughness of the sliding surface is simulated by changing the angle and quantity of the convex. Moreover, the impacts of backfill particles are investigated through the particle stiffness, strength, dimension or distribution mode. To improve the performance of AE monitoring, the applicable monitoring parameters in different simulated conditions are determined. For the backfill particles, it can promote the ability of AE monitoring by reducing the strength or dimension, enhancing the stiffness, and utilizing better gradation. INTRODUCTION Landslide is a kind of slope rock mass deformation failure process and phenomenon under the action of gravity and external factors (such as rainfall, earthquake, human activities, etc.). As a geologic disaster, landslide is characterized by its high frequency, wide distribution and severe loss, seriously threatening the safety of human life and property and major facilities (Petley, 2012). China is one of the heaviest exposed countries to landslide in Asia and even in the world. Especially since the reform and opening up, land use is progressively expanding to areas at high risk of landslide disasters, leading to an annual increment in landslide disasters (Persichillo et al., 2017). To achieve landslide prevention and mitigation, in addition to landslide treatment, landslide monitoring and early warning are particularly important.

Abstract:The quality of landslide monitoring data is crucial to the reliability of early warning systems. One effective approach to improving data quality is through innovation in monitoring techniques. In the case of existing acoustic emission (AE) monitoring methods, the achievable deformation quantification accuracy is limited by the variability of internal and external factors that affect the generated AE signal. To overcome these limitations and further improve monitoring effectiveness, this study developed a novel monitoring equipment consisting of an AE array, which facilitates the standardisation of equipment manufacturing and improves the consistency of data interpretation, thus providing a system that is simple and practical for field application. The developed AE monitoring system includes modules for on-site monitoring, data transmission, information management, and early warning analysis. The AE monitoring system was installed on different soil landslides in China and is continuously operating. Because the AE array provides a standardised and simple tool for landslide subsurface deformation monitoring, it is well-suited for low-income mountainous areas with a high risk of landslides.

Abstract:Landslide deformation monitoring is an important method for proactive disaster prevention. Acoustic emission (AE) equipment, comprising active waveguides (i.e., a steel tube with granular internal/external backfill), has become an optional monitoring technology for subsurface deformation in landslides. It is also challenging to develop novel AE monitoring equipment that can optimise technological applications and data interpretation. In this study, we developed an equipment named "AE array" with a newly designed assembly and a standardised structure, from which we developed a complete AE monitoring system. We then conducted an experimental investigation of the AE array using speed-controlled compression to explore the acoustic properties in response to deformation. The AE array was also used in the field to demonstrate its practical use and performance for landslide monitoring at a loess slope. The deformation–AE relationship was obtained and compared using data from the compression experiment and the field site. The AE array collectively monitored AE and an inclinometer within a borehole, which has practical applications and data validation advantages. A strong linear correlation was obtained between the cumulative displacement and AE data, independent of the length of the AE array. The complexity and variability of the field-based deformation–AE relationship have implications for potentially improving the performance of the AE array. Machine learning models should be considered to automatically quantify the dynamic deformation–AE relationship, which can provide a basis for landslide early warning systems.

Abstract:Compared with slope surface measurement, subsurface monitoring has the potential to detect abnormal changes at an earlier stage. Due to the large-scale deformation of landslides and the complex geological environment, the existing subsurface devices generally have limited measuring range or high economic cost. Thus, it is urgent to develop an advanced method to improve the sustainable monitoring of large subsurface deformation. In this study, a novel flexible device is designed for slope subsurface monitoring, which combines an active waveguide of acoustic emission and the distinctive structure of a large-deformation bolt. An experimental system is built and a loading process of three-stage deformation is carried out to test the performance of the flexible device. The kinematic, mechanical and acoustic emission parameters are synchronously obtained in the whole landslide model test. The results indicate that different evolution stages of a landslide can be distinguished by sliding acceleration. The axial tension within the anchor cable changes consistently with sliding thrust. In addition, using acoustic emission to quantify slope deformation has achieved strong correlation. An extra experiment with constant velocity is conducted to explore the precision of deformation quantification by acoustic emission. A schematic diagram is presented for how this novel device would be used for landslide monitoring in the field, with the potential practicability of stabilizing the slope.

Abstract:The deformation process of soil slopes observed during a landslide can have progressive characteristics, which can be quantified through acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. A model test is designed based on the geological model of a translational landslide, and experiments are conducted to reproduce the three-stage deformation process of a soil slope. The deformation process of progressive landslides is described using equations, and an entire loading process is realized using a programmable logic controller (PLC). The maximum velocity of a sliding body is measured to be approximately 6 mm/s with the final displacement exceeding 210 mm. The AE, deformation, and mechanical measurements of the entire process are compared to comprehensively evaluate the evolution behavior of progressive soil landslides. The experiments demonstrate that AE rates can linearly quantify slope velocity as well as help quantify slope acceleration. A copper tube and an aluminum tube are compared as different waveguides, and the quantitative relationship between the AE and deformation obtained by the active copper waveguide is found to be more distinct. The experiments also show that the acceleration of a slope can be effectively used as a discriminant index of progressive landslides, which has the potential to be applied in field monitoring.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring and intelligent early warning system are crucial and significant to take mitigation measures and reduce casualties and property losses related to landslides. It is difficult to obtain entire monitoring data in the accelerated deformation phase in a landslide event, and hard to issue early warning information using a traditional monitoring approach with fixed and low sampling frequency. Displacement increments of loess landslides induced by agriculture irrigation on the Heifangtai terrace could be sudden and extremely rapid. Typical landslide types include loess flowslides and loess falls. It is of practical significance to develop a self-adaptive data acquisition monitoring technique and establish a real-time landslide early warning system (LEWS) to meet the needs for risk mitigation of rapid sliding slopes on the Heifangtai terrace. The monitoring technique can wirelessly transmit displacement data and the LEWS was devised using the new artificial intelligence. The LEWS could automatically release the warning information in advance of the event once the early warning parameters exceed default thresholds. In this study, the early warning procedures, real-time monitoring approach, intelligent LEWS, a multiple criteria warning model, warning release and emergency mitigation measures, and performance are introduced in detail. Six loess landslides at Heifangtai and eight landslides in other regions of China have been successfully warned since its implementation in 2012. This study proposed an effective and practical solution for the early warning of loess landslides at Heifangtai. Two typical loess landslides that had successful early warnings at Heifangtai were presented. The successful implementation could serve as a reference for global rapid slope failure cases, considering the complex nature of landslide behaviors and failure mechanisms.

Abstract:Due to the uncertainty in soil landslide failure mechanisms, lack of early warning systems for soil landslides and adoption of improper excavation configurations, soil landslides accidents triggered by highway excavation in Chinese mountainous areas generally require expensive remedial measures. This paper describes a soil landslide associated with excavation through integrating field reconnaissance and finite element method simulation. According to the obtained results, the adoption of toe excavation and the presence of a silty clay layer are the two main factors contributing to the failure of the soil landslide, and a strong negative correction was observed between the toe excavation and surface displacement and the safety factor of the investigated cut slope; therefore, a four-level early warning system for this excavation-induced soil landslide was established by employing toe excavation and surface displacement thresholds as the warning indicators. Lastly, a preferable excavation configuration was proposed to facilitate excavation designs in similar landslide-prone areas.

Abstract:Long-term monitoring of slopes is of significance for engineering geology research and geo-disaster prevention. There is a growing need to develop fast, nondestructive and affordable techniques that can detect gradual and cyclic changes inside slopes. For this purpose, we propose a fast and low-cost computational framework based on processing the single-point ambient seismic noise recordings by the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method. To test the efficiency of the proposed framework, we conduct a demonstration study in a road-cut slope in colluvium deposits in Southwest China. First, we carry out short-term ambient seismic noise surveys on the slope, delineate the shear wave velocity (Vs) structure of the slope, verify and establish this structure as the reference Vs model for the slope. Then we conduct the long-term monitoring of the ambient seismic noise on two profiles of the slope, calculate the HVSR curves and observe the time-dependent variations of the predominant peaks that reflect temporal changes of subsurface interfaces. Finally, we perform the Vs inversion to investigate changes in the Vs structure with rainfall. Through the monitoring, we identify the rainfall-induced slope failure and discover that both predominant frequency and shallow subsurface Vs of slope are negatively correlated with rainfall. The HVSR calculation, the predominant peak identification and the Vs inversion can all be implemented in minutes, which is much faster than the array-based surface wave method. The theoretical analysis and the demonstration application show that the framework we proposed in this study has great potential for monitoring changes in performance of slopes.

Abstract:Landslides are prevalent throughout the world and pose a significant threat to the natural and social environment. The variability of material properties, landslide kinematics, and interference from external human activities make landslides active at intermittent displacement rates for long periods of time, causing authorities to be unable to accurately target high-risk areas and take appropriate mitigation measures. This paper proposes a circular, full-process dynamic landslide risk assessment framework considering the active state of the potential landslide affected area based on InSAR technology, allowing risk ranking of evaluation objects (e.g. village, landslide) in the study area and detection of areas requiring risk mitigation measures. The method is applied in the Liuyang City, Hunan Province in China where several villages are widely affected by landslides that cause serious damages to buildings and infrastructure resulting in significant economic losses, which can profitably facilitate the decision makers in addressing the issue of the potential landslide risk mitigation in a sustainable way.

Abstract:Landslide triggered by earthquake or rainstorm often results in serious property damage and human casualties. It is, therefore, necessary to establish an emergency management system to facilitate the processes of damage assessment and decision-making. This paper has presented an integrated approach for mapping and analyzing spatial features of a landslide from remote sensing images and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). Several image interpretation tools have been provided for analyzing the spatial distribution and characteristics of the landslide on different dimensions: (1D) terrain variation analysis along the mass movement direction and (3D) morphological analysis. In addition, the results of image interpretation can be further discussed and adjusted on an online cooperating platform, which was built to improve the coordination of all players involved in different phases of emergency management, e.g., hazard experts, emergency managers, and first response organizations. A mobile-based application has also been developed to enhance the data exchange and on-site investigation. Our pilot study of Guanling landslide shows that the presented approach has the potential to facilitate the phases of landslide monitoring and information management, e.g., hazard assessment, emergency preparedness, planning mitigation, and response.

Abstract:Landslides induced by mining always cause serious economic losses and human deaths in mining areas. The nature of these disasters argues for a reverse analysis of slope monitoring data to assess the cause, size, and temporal evolution and to further predict the potential risks of future disasters. In this paper, we investigated the Songmugou Landslide based on multisource remote sensing techniques. More specifically, we first investigated the geomorphological features and the time series subsidence rates across this slope from December 7, 2015 to April 26, 2019, by exploiting unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) monitoring, we then analyzed the deformation characteristics, active zonation, and secondary landslide risk of the study area by integrating geological, engineering, and rainfall data. Finally, we discussed reasonable evolution sequence and potential risk of the landslide and provided several suggestions for subsequent geological hazard prevention. The results indicate that this comprehensive approach can be used to back-analyze and reasonably predict the evolutionary mechanism of landslides.

Abstract:Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring has become an optional technology to quantify slope deformation. However, there are still challenges in developing generic AE interpretation strategies. Dynamics and kinematics models are two physical methods for analysing slope stability, which appear to improve the interpretability of AE monitoring data. The aim of this study is to explore the change patterns and interrelations of dynamics, kinematics, and AE measurements using a model test and physical analysis, to further understand the development process of a progressive landslide. A model test is designed based on the kinematics model of landslide three-stage deformation. An equation between factor of safety (FoS) and thrust is proposed based on the mechanical model of a landslide test. There is a clear correspondence between the displacement and inverse velocity during the deformation-controlled process. Relationships are uncovered between the thrust and FoS as well as the thrust and acceleration. As a characteristic parameter of AE, ring down count (RDC) is able to quantify the deformation process of the soil slope. Moreover, acceleration and RDC can reflect the sudden change of the slope state and, hence, can be effective indicators for the early warning in a progressive landslide.

Abstract:The Meijiayan landslide in Pengshui County within Chongqing City is a medium-scale soil landslide triggered by the excavation of roadbeds. To delve into the influencing factors and assess the stability of this landslide, it is crucial to meticulously map the subterranean geological framework of the area. Such an analysis lays the groundwork for evaluating and mitigating the risks of future landslide instabilities. In this context, the semi-airborne transient electromagnetic method (SATEM), which is complemented by a receiving system mounted on an aerial platform, stands out as an innovative geophysical exploration technique. This method is adept at conducting swift measurements across complex terrains, making it particularly valuable for areas prone to such geological events. This paper presents the utilization of a cutting-edge loop source SATEM system, which was operationalized via a rotor-based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The system was employed to conduct shallow geological structure detection experiments on the Meijiayan landslide. The SATEM detection outcomes have unveiled fluctuations in the electrical distribution across the upper strata, which are indicative of the subsurface geological boundaries, faults, and areas potentially rich in water within the landslide region. These discoveries affirm the viability of utilizing loop source SATEM for the identification of shallow geological structures in regions susceptible to landslides. The findings indicate that while the landslide is currently in a stable condition, it poses a significant risk of movement, especially during the rainy season, with the potential for landslides to be exacerbated by extreme or sustained rainfall events.

Abstract:Rapid societal development and increased engineering construction have exacerbated the disturbance of the geological environment. The impact of extreme climatic factors has grown, leading to a surge in geological disasters, with landslides emerging as particularly significant. Consequently, fundamental research in geological disaster detection or monitoring necessitates an in-depth study of the physical phenomena accompanying landslides' development, evolution, and occurrence. Exploring the signal characteristics associated with landslides is crucial to indirectly understanding their development and change processes—a scientific question deserving thorough exploration. Despite this research's importance, there is a notable gap in the investigation of the key design and specific implementation of electromagnetic instruments tailored for landslide detection. This gap is particularly pronounced in designing and implementing data acquisition software for electromagnetic instruments. This interdisciplinary research draws on theoretical frameworks from embedded computer science, software engineering, digital signal processing technology, geophysics, and engineering geology. It focuses on developing specialized data acquisition application software for landslide detection or monitoring, contributing to the scientific understanding of landslide development and providing independent intellectual property in the electromagnetic wave signal detection field.

The Experimental Investigation on Progressive Deformation of Shear Slip Surface Based on Acoustic Emission Measurements

Abstract:The sliding surface deformation of the soil slope mainly presents progressive failure characteristics, and serial acoustic emission (AE) signals are generated during the deformation process of progressive landslide. Early warning systems for soil slope instability should alert users of slope deformation stage to make the right decision. Thus, a model test aiming at reproducing the typical shear surface deformation of a soil slope is designed. The displacement, AE data and corresponding time–frequency characteristics are comprehensively analyzed to evaluate the progressive deformation behavior. Comparisons with different granular backfills measurements show that cumulative AE count increases proportionally with the shear surface displacement, and the experiments demonstrate that the glass sand backfill exhibits remarkable AE detection characteristics and stronger correlation results. Significantly, AE signal exhibits variant dominant frequencies at different deformation stages, and there is the significant phenomenon that not only the low-frequency signals generated with a significantly increase number, at the same time the continuous high-frequency signals appear during the accelerating deformation stage. Furthermore, from the statistical trend of the energy percentage of the high-frequency band into 312.5–500 kHz, it is found that the correlative energy proportion occupies up to 15%, or even higher during the accelerating stage, indicating that the landslide may be about to enter a severely dangerous stage. This study proposes a new perspective on the frequency characteristics as the early warning index, which can be combined with other traditional acoustic emission indicators to improve the accuracy of the field warning monitoring for the soil progressive landslides.

Abstract:Fast and accurate assessment of slope topography and geological information and understanding of slope deformation evolution are of great significance in emergency investigation and monitoring of landslides. In this study, using the geometric information contained in terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point clouds, an automatic discontinuity identification algorithm and a quantitative overall displacement evaluation method were developed. The automatic discontinuity identification algorithm is based on a k-means fuzzy cluster, allowing fast visual identification of any discontinuity from the acquired point cloud data to obtain accurate geometric information including occurrence, spacing, and continuity. It can provide adequate assessment of potentially unstable blocks in landslides during emergency disposal. The quantitative overall displacement evaluation method characterizes the overall displacement trend of local areas based on statistics from the M3C2 algorithm results. It can be used to quantify the deformation/displacement of relatively independent blocks (or local areas of slopes) and provides technical support for multi-temporal monitoring of potentially unstable blocks during emergency landslide disposal. These methods were applied to the Baige landslide during emergency disposal in 2019. Based on a comprehensive geological survey and monitoring results, the overall remnant slope was in a relatively stable state after the Baige landslide. However, the back edge of the slope was somewhat broken, and there were two large blocks with a relatively high risk of instability. The results show that these methods can provide effective technical support for emergency investigation, monitoring, and risk assessment of large-scale landslides.

Abstract:Landslide susceptibility mapping is an integral part of geological hazard analysis. Recently, the emphasis of many studies has been on data-driven models, notably those derived from machine learning, owing to their aptitude for tackling complex non-linear problems. However, the prevailing models often disregard qualitative research, leading to limited interpretability and mistakes in extracting negative samples, i.e. inaccurate non-landslide samples. In this study, Scoops 3D (a three-dimensional slope stability analysis tool) was utilized to conduct a qualitative assessment of slope stability in the Yunyang section of the Three Gorges Reservoir area. The depth of the bedrock was predicted utilizing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), incorporating local boreholes and building on the insights from prior research. The Random Forest (RF) algorithm was subsequently used to execute a data-driven landslide susceptibility analysis. The proposed methodology demonstrated a notable increase of 29.25% in the evaluation metric, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC), outperforming the prevailing benchmark model. Furthermore, the landslide susceptibility map generated by the proposed model demonstrated superior interpretability. This result not only validates the effectiveness of amalgamating mathematical and mechanistic insights for such analyses, but it also carries substantial academic and practical implications.

Abstract:With the rapid development of human society and the surge of engineering construction, the disturbance of the geological environment has grown substantial. The influence of extreme climatic factors and the frequency of geological disasters have increased. Landslide is an important geological disaster. The foundational research in geological disaster detection or monitoring involves studying the physical phenomena associated with the occurrence of landslides, analyzing their signal characteristics, and indirectly determining their development and changes. This scientific area is worthy of in-depth exploration. However, research on the key design and specific implementation of electromagnetic instruments tailored for landslide detection remains lacking. This study is based on the interdisciplinary theoretical system of electronic circuits, embedded computer science, digital signal processing technology, geophysics, and engineering geology. It independently develops a functional prototype of an electromagnetic detector for landslide detection. This design combines the current level of development of electronic disciplines and applies the embedded multicore Da Vinci industrial-grade computer system in the field of earth detection instruments. This study then designs and implements a landslide detection system with independent intellectual property rights.

Abstract:Knowledge of landslide displacement trends is important to understand risks and establish early warning trigger thresholds so that action can be taken to protect people and critical infrastructure. However, the availability of direct continuous displacement measurements is often limited due to relatively high costs. This has driven research to establish models that quantify relationships between landslide displacements and other measured parameters such as pore water pressures, rainfall and more recently acoustic emission (AE), so that displacement can be predicted, and hence made available at a lower cost. This paper describes an investigation of established machine learning models to predict displacements using time series measurements of AE and rainfall. Data from a case study site has been used to train models using measured displacements and then test to assess prediction accuracy. The LASSO-ELM model was shown to perform best. It was able to predict displacements to a mean absolute percentage error < 2.5% up to 60 days after the end of the training period, which is better than similar reported studies. Training a LASSO-ELM model using continuous high resolution AE measurements combined with rainfall data has potential to provide predicted displacement trends once direct measurement of displacement is no-longer available.

Abstract:Slope failures are an ongoing global threat leading to significant numbers of fatalities and infrastructure damage. Landslide impact on communities can be reduced using efficient early warning systems to plan mitigation measures and protect elements at risk. This manuscript presents an innovative geophysical approach to monitoring landslide dynamics, which combines Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and low-frequency Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), and was deployed on a slope representative of many landslides in clay rich lowland slopes. ERT is used to create detailed, dynamic moisture maps that highlight zones of moisture accumulation leading to slope instability. The link between ERT derived soil moisture and the subsequent initiation of slope deformation is confirmed by low-frequency DAS measurements, which were collocated with the ERT measurements and provide changes in strain at unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution. Auxiliary hydrological and slope displacement data support the geophysical interpretation. By revealing critical zones prone to failure, this combined ERT and DAS monitoring approach sheds new light on landslide mechanisms. This study demonstrates the advantage of including subsurface geophysical monitoring techniques to improve landslide early warning approaches, and highlights the importance of relying on observations from different sources to build effective landslide risk management strategies.
