Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxydisulfate (PDS) or peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation have attracted much research attention in the last decade for the degradation of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Sulfate (SO4•−) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals are most frequently generated from catalytic PDS/PMS decomposition by thermal, base, irradiation, transition metals and carbon materials. In addition, increasingly more recent studies have reported the involvement of singlet oxygen (1O2) during PDS/PMS-based AOPs. Typically, 1O2 can be produced either along with SO4•− and •OH or discovered as the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROSs) for pollutants degradation. This paper reviews recent advances in 1O2 generation during PDS/PMS activation. First, it introduces the basic chemistry of 1O2, its oxidation properties and detection methodologies. Furthermore, it elaborates different activation strategies/techniques, including homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, and discusses the possible reaction mechanisms to give an overview of the principle of 1O2 production by activating PDS/PMS. Moreover, although 1O2 has shown promising features such as high degradation selectivity and anti-interference capability, its production pathways and mechanisms remain controversial in the present literatures. Therefore, this study identifies the research gaps and proposes future perspectives in the aspects of novel catalysts and related mechanisms.

Singlet Oxygen Triggered by Superoxide Radicals in a Molybdenum Cocatalytic Fenton Reaction with Enhanced REDOX Activity in the Environment.

Abstract:As an important reactive oxygen species (ROS) with selective oxidation, singlet oxygen (1O2) has wide application prospects in biology and the environment. However, the mechanism of 1O2 formation, especially the conversion of superoxide radicals (·O2-) to 1O2, has been a great controversy. This process is often disturbed by hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Here, we develop a molybdenum cocatalytic Fenton system, which can realize the transformation from ·O2- to 1O2 on the premise of minimizing ·OH. The Mo0 exposed on the surface of molybdenum powder can significantly improve the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling efficiency and weaken the production of ·OH, leading to the generation of ·O2-. Meanwhile, the exposed Mo6+ can realize the transformation of ·O2- to 1O2. The molybdenum cocatalytic effect makes the conventional Fenton reaction have high oxidation activity for the remediation of organic pollutants and prompts the inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus, as well as the adsorption and reduction of heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Ni2+, and Cr6+). Compared with iron powder, molybdenum powder is more likely to promote the conversion from Fe3+ to Fe2+ during the Fenton reaction, resulting in a higher Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio and better activity regarding the remediation of organics. Our findings clarify the transformation mechanism from ·O2- to 1O2 during the Fenton-like reaction and provide a promising REDOX Fenton-like system for water treatment.

Abstract:In recent years, advanced oxidation process (AOPs) based on sulfate radical (SO4●−) and singlet oxygen (1O2) has attracted a lot of attention because of its characteristics of rapid reaction, efficient treatment, safety and stability, and easy operation. SO4●− and 1O2 mainly comes from the activation reaction of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS), which represent the oxidation reactions involving radicals and non-radicals, respectively. The degradation effects of target pollutants will be different due to the type of oxidant, reaction system, activation methods, operating conditions, and other factors. In this paper, according to the characteristics of PMS and PS, the activation methods and mechanisms in these oxidation processes, respectively dominated by SO4●− and 1O2, are systematically introduced. The research progress of PMS and PS activation for the degradation of organic pollutants in recent years is reviewed, and the existing problems and future research directions are pointed out. It is expected to provide ideas for further research and practical application of advanced oxidation processes dominated by SO4●− and 1O2.

Abstract:The utilization of copper oxide (CuO) as a catalyst in the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process holds great promise for effectively degrading aqueous organic pollutants, while the relevant mechanism remains inadequately understood. In this study, we delve into the evolution pathways of reactive species in the CuO/PMS system through a comprehensive series of experimental analyses. Our findings indicate that various reactive species are generated in the CuO/PMS system with the specific sequence, where the decomposition of surface Cu(II)-OOSO3- leads to the formation of surface Cu(III) species, which are responsible for the subsequent generation of HO•. The reactivity of these reactive species and the sequence of their generation explain the distinct oxidation behaviors of pollutants with different values of ionization potential (IP). In addition, singlet oxygen (1O2) may be produced during the PMS activation process, while its involvement in the oxidation of substrates is deemed negligible. This investigation presents a novel perspective, enhancing our comprehension of the mechanism underlying transition metal-mediated PMS activation processes. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The removal of refractory organic contaminations in water constitutes a fundamental concern within the realm of environmental pollution management. Peroxymonosulfate activation induced by transition metal oxides has garnered significant recognition as a promising technological approach for the degradation of aqueous organic contaminants, while the underlying mechanism remains enigmatic. In this study, we systematically investigate the evolution pathways of reactive species in the CuO/peroxymonosulfate system to reveal the mystery of the reaction mechanism between CuO and peroxymonosulfate. The outcomes of our study contribute to enhancing the practical applicability of transition metal-triggered PMS activation processes.

Bimetallic nanoparticles have been widely applied in electronic, chemical, biological, and mechanical fields, etc.; however, few researchers have attempted to adopt bimetallic nanoparticles in environmental remediation. Further, in recent years, element molybdenum (Mo) has addressed much more environmental field attention than ever. Although singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) generated commonly in SR-AOPs, its generation mechanism remains controversial. Hence, in this work, bimetallic MoFe/TiO2 nanospheres were rationally constructed via a facile two-step methodology. Undoubtedly, it exhibited superior performance for the degradation of organic pollutants (e.g., rhodamine, phenol, 4-chlorophenol and sulfadiazine) irradiated by simulated solar light. Both photo-generated electrons and transition metallic redox couples (i.e., Mo6+/Mo4+, Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mo4+/Fe3+) play vital roles in the PMS activation. Distinct from conventional SR-AOPs, sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-), hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and peroxymonosulfate radicals (SO5 center dot-) indeed participate in the transformation and generation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)). With the combination of DFT calculation, the Mo sites on the bimetallic MoFe (110) facet are more favorable to adsorb PMS molecules, then followed by the dissociation of PMS progressing on the Mo sites. Electrons transferring from the Mo atoms to the Fe atoms facilitated the adsorption of the negatively charged HSO5- anions, resulting in enhanced PMS activation efficiency. Considering its novelty and generation mechanism, this work highlights the mechanism of O-1(2) generation from PMS reduction and oxidation simultaneously and furnishes theoretical support for further relevant studies.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been received increasing attention in recent years due to their high capability and adaptability for the degradation of emerging contaminants. Persulfate (PS, S2O8 2−) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO5 −) can be activated by thermal, alkaline, ultraviolet light, activated carbon, transition metal (such as Fe0, Fe2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ag+), ultrasound and hydrogen peroxide to form sulfate radical (SO4 −), which is strong oxidant and capable of effectively degrading emerging pollutants. Sulfate radical-based AOPs have a series of advantages in comparison with OH-based methods, for example: higher oxidation potential, higher selectivity and efficiency to oxidize pollutants containing unsaturated bonds or aromatic ring, wider pH range. Therefore, sulfate radicals are capable of removing the emerging contaminants more efficiently. In this review paper, various methods for the activation of PS and PMS were introduced, including, thermal, alkaline, radiation, transition metal ions and metal oxide, carbonaceous-based materials activation and so on; and their possible activation mechanisms were discussed. In addition, the application of activated PS and PMS for the degradation of emerging contaminants and the influencing factors were summarized. Finally, the concluding remarks and perspectives are made for future study on the activation of PS and PMS. This review can provide an overview for the activation and application of PS and PMS for the degradation of emerging contaminants, as well as for the deep understanding of the activation mechanisms of PS and PMS by various methods.

Abstract:The reactions between peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and quinones were investigated for the first time in this work, where benzoquinone (BQ) was selected as a model quinone. It was demonstrated that BQ could efficiently activate PMS for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX; a frequently detected antibiotic in the environments), and the degradation rate increased with solution pH from 7 to 10. Interestingly, quenching studies suggested that neither hydroxyl radical (•OH) nor sulfate radical (SO4•-) was produced therein. Instead, the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) was proved by using two chemical probes (i.e., 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol and 9,10-diphenylanthracene) with the appearance of 1O2 indicative products detected by electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, respectively. A catalytic mechanism was proposed involving the formation of a dioxirane intermediate between PMS and BQ and the subsequent decomposition of this intermediate into 1O2. Accordingly, a kinetic model was developed, and it well described the experimental observation that the pH-dependent decomposition rate of PMS was first-order with respect to BQ. These findings have important implications for the development of novel nonradical oxidation processes based on PMS, because 1O2 as a moderately reactive electrophile may suffer less interference from background organic matters compared with nonselective •OH and SO4•-.
Activation of peroxymonosulfate by phenols: Important role of quinone intermediates and involvement of singlet oxygen

Abstract:In this study, the kinetics of reactions of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with ten model phenols (including phenol, methylphenols, methoxyphenols, and dihydroxybenzenes) were examined. The oxidation kinetics of these phenols by PMS except for catechol and resorcinol showed autocatalysis in alkaline conditions (pH 8.5 and 10), due to the contribution of singlet oxygen (1O2) produced from PMS activation by quinone intermediates formed from their phenolic parents. The oxidation rates of ortho- and meta-substituted methylphenols and methoxyphenols by PMS were much higher than their para-substituted counterparts under similar conditions. This was attributed to the relatively low yields of quinone intermediates from para-substituted phenols. SMX could be efficiently degraded by PMS in the presence of phenols which showed great autocatalysis when they individually reacted with PMS, and the addition of methanol in excess had negligible influence suggesting that 1O2 rather than hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical played an important role. Transformation of SMX by 1O2 underwent three pathways including hydroxylation of aniline ring, oxidation of aromatic amine group to generate nitro-SMX, and oxidative coupling to generate azo-SMX and hydroxylated azo-SMX. These results obtained in this work improve the understanding of in situ chemical oxidation using PMS for remediation of subsurface, where phenolic and quinonoid moieties are ubiquitous.
Revisiting the Heterogeneous Peroxymonosulfate Activation by MoS2: a Surface Mo-Peroxymonosulfate Complex as the Major Reactive Species

Abstract:Heterogeneous peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are under extensive investigation for their great potential in water remediation. The understanding of the PMS activation mechanism is crucial but still debatable. Here, we describe a thorough investigation of the mechanism involved in PMS activation by using molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a catalyst. This MoS2/PMS system exhibited intriguing target-dependent reactivity. Further comprehensive experimental results excluded the major contributions of various possible species, including HO center dot, SO4 center dot-, O-2(center dot-), O-1(2), homogeneous Mo(VI), and heterogeneous Mo(VI). We then proposed a surface Mo-OOSO3- complex as the major reactive species, while SO4 center dot- derived from the decomposition of Mo-OOSO3- acted as the secondary reactive species for pollutant removal. This complex could oxidize pollutants through the oxygen-atom-transfer mechanism and perform both nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks. This work provides novel perspectives for the mechanistic understanding of heterogeneous PMS-based AOPs for water remediation.
Singlet oxygen-dominated activation of peroxymonosulfate by 3D hierarchical MnO2 nanostructures for degradation of organic pollutants in water: Surface defect and catalytic mechanism

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is attracting significant attention in the activation of persulfate for the degradation of organic pollutants in water. But the factor determining the catalytic efficiency of MnO2, and the evolution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) remain equivocal and elusive. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical MnO2 nanostructures are synthesized via the calcination of hydrothermal product and used to active peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) in water. The results show that the calcination temperature can tune the morphology of 3D hierarchical MnO2 nanostructures from flower to urchin-like as well as phase transformation from δ-MnO2 to α-MnO2. Owing to the presence of more surface defects and surface adsorbed oxygen species, the urchin-like α-MnO2 nanostructures prepared at 500 °C (MnO2-500) deliver the best catalytic activity in activation of PMS, and 98.3 % of AO7 is degraded in 300 s. Additionally, the MnO2-500 shows wide pH applicability (3.5–9.6). Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra reveal that the catalytic oxidation of AO7 in the MnO2-500/PMS system is mainly mediated by the non-radical pathway, and the dominated ROS is 1O2. Besides, electrochemical experiment confirms the presence of electron transfer in the catalytic process. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the CN and CS groups of AO7 with high electron density are easily attacked by electrophilic ROS, which is further confirmed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Finally, MnO2-500 exhibits gradually enhanced catalytic activity with the increased cycle number due to the increased surface defects and the surface adsorbed oxygen. This study provides new insight into the PMS activation by MnO2-based catalyst for the remediation of organic pollutants in water.

Abstract:Research studies on the sulfate radical-advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP) have been accumulating in recent decades. This chapter focuses on heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) using metal (zero-valent iron, copper), transition metal oxides (iron oxides, cobalt oxides, manganese oxides, etc.) and perovskite-type metal oxides for the deconstruction of organic pollutants in wastewater and soil. In this chapter we introduce the micro/nano structure characteristics of the above catalysts as well as the activation efficiency and mechanism of the heterogeneous activation of persulfate (PS). Finally, the environmental significance of the heterogeneous activation of PS is also discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been growing interest on the application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on sulfate radical in the elimination of organic contaminants. In such processes, sulfate radical is typically generated from the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or peroxydisulfate (PDS). In this paper, generation of sulfate radical by various methods and mechanism of activation processes for PMS or PDS were discussed. Moreover, certain applications of sulfate radical-based AOPs in wastewater, groundwater, and soil remediation were also summarized. More strategies, such as developing stable and highly efficient metal oxide activators, fabricating efficient carbonaceous-based materials, and combining with other treatment technologies, should be considered in further applications of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). In addition, more attention should be paid to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by coupling experimental analysis with theoretical models. The generation of toxic byproducts, high level of sulfate ion, and complex quenching reactions are pointed out as main limitations. Finally, further studies on mechanistic aspects of the chemistry involved and evaluation of the potential for on-site applications are desired to further explore implementation of such SR-AOPs.

Abstract:This review provides a focused and comprehensive overview of the cutting-edge advancements in advanced oxidation processes employing heterogeneous persulfate activation technologies (PS-AOPs), which can serve as effective tools for tackling emerging organic pollutants. This review focuses on the evolution of PS activation mechanisms and the possible challenges in system application. The review delineates traditional radical mechanisms and elucidates non-radical pathways, such as singlet oxygen, high-valent metal-oxo species, electron transfer, and direct oxidation transfer process. By extensively using empirical data, this review also summarizes the reasons behind the emergence of different oxidation mechanisms and offers potential methods to modulate reaction pathways. It also explores the ecological impacts of the system and suggests prospective strategies for improving by-product management to optimize pollutant removal and ecological sustainability. This review can reveal the untapped potential and future directions of heterogeneous PS-AOPs, making an essential contribution to environmental remediation.

Abstract:Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) has been commonly used as an eco-friendly catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate free radicals (SO4 center dot- and/or center dot OH). However, the activation efficiency of PMS relies heavily on the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) that is slow and rate-limiting. In this study, oxygen vacancies enriched alpha-Fe2O3 was prepared from thermally treated goethite (alpha-FeOOH) and employed as a PMS activator. Systematic characterization demonstrated that alpha-Fe2O3 with most abundant oxygen vacancies could be obtained by heating alpha-FeOOH at 300 degrees C. The as-prepared alpha-Fe2O3 exhibited excellent catalytic activity in activation of PMS for oxidation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX, k = 0.04 min(-1)). The SMX degradation rate was found to be positively correlated with the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Quenching experiments, EPR, LC/MS and XPS analysis revealed that singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) was the predominant reactive oxygen species. The effects of pH, PMS dosage, catalyst loading, temperature, and anions on SMX degradation were comprehensively investigated. Moreover, the plausible degradation pathways of SMX in the alpha-Fe2O3/PMS system were proposed. This work not only provides a valuable insight into the mechanism of PMS activation by alpha-Fe2O3 but also establishes a new strategy for the design of more efficient and practical iron-based catalyst for PMS activation.
Heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate by flower-like cobalt sulfide enhanced sulfamethoxazole degradation via non-radical pathways

Abstract:The treatment of emerging pollutants has become a challenging and multidisciplinary subject. Advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate are a strategic opportunity to address this issue, with research into catalysts and catalytic processes being the focus of this process. In this work, flower-like cobalt sulfide (F-CoS) particles acted as catalysts in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for degrading an organic pollutant, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results indicated that F-CoS/PMS combined system performed excellently, with SMX being completely oxidized within 10 min. And the system exhibited superior resistance to environmental factors (e.g. pH and anions). Radicals quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses indicated that non-radical pathways based on high-valent cobalt-oxo (Co(IV)) species and 1 O 2 take a dominant position in SMX degradation, instead of SO 4 •- and •OH. Electrochemical, in-situ Raman and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that PMS interacts with Co sites on the F-CoS surface, and then electronic transfer processes occurred, in which PMS acts as an electron acceptor to produce Co(IV) species and as an electron donor to produce 1 O 2 . This study not only implies a method with great potential application in organic wastewater treatment but also contributes to further comprehending the heterogeneous activation process and catalytic mechanism of PMS.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) have received widespread attention in recent years, but the precise nature of PMS activation and its impact on the overall process performance remain poorly understood. This study presents the first demonstration of the critical role played by the oxygen reduction reaction in the effective utilization of PMS and the subsequent enhancement of overall pollutant remediation. We observed the concurrent generation of H2O2 via oxygen reduction during the cathodic PMS activation by a model nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube catalyst. A complex interplay between H2O2 generation and PMS activation, as well as a locally increased pH near the electrode due to the oxygen reduction reaction, resulted in a SO4•-/•OH-mixed oxidation environment that facilitated pollutant degradation. The findings of this study highlight a unique dependency between PMS-driven and H2O2-driven EAOPs and a new perspective on a previously unexplored route for further enhancing PMS-based treatment processes.

Abstract:Persulfate oxidation is a recently emerging technology for the pollution control.Produced by activated persulfate,the sulfate free radical SO-4·,a powerful oxidant,can degrade most of the organic compounds.This paper,for the first time,provides an up-to-date overview of single activation methods,such as thermal persulfate,photochemical persulfate,persulfate combined with transition metal ions,alkaline persulfate,zero-valent metal Fe0,and multiplex activation technologies as well including dual oxidant system,and hybrids of single activation method mentioned above.Moreover,the relationship between the activation method and organic structure as well as pH value,and also the residue of SO2-4 are discussed.Finally,on the basis of our preliminary findings,the research trends for promoting its development are prospected.

Abstract:Singlet oxygen-based advanced oxidation processes ( 1 O 2 -AOPs) have attracted extensive interest in selective removal of organic pollutants in the complicated water matrices. However, both the highly efficient 1 O 2 production and selective pollutants oxidation degradation are challenging. In this work, a 2D Co-MOF (Co-tib) was synthesized and applied to accomplish nearly 100% 1 O 2 production during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, which exhibited excellent selective catalytic oxidation performance toward multiple organic pollutants. More importantly, >99% selective removal efficiencies for rhodamine B (RhB), bisphenol A (BPA) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are achieved in the mixed RhB/BPA/SMX/Benzoic acid (BA) solutions, and >90% selective removal efficiencies for RhB, BPA and SMX are achieved in the mixed RhB/BPA/SMX/P-nitrobenzoic acid (NBA) solutions. The influences of PMS dosage, pH, pollutant concentrations and inorganic ions for pollutants degradation were investigated. The reaction mechanisms were proposed via active species quenching tests, probe experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR). This work will provide new inspiration for 1 O 2 production and selective degradation toward multiple pollutants in a complicated aqueous matrix via the catalytic PMS activation over MOFs catalysts.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate activation by sulfur-containing minerals has been applied extensively for the degradation of contaminants; however, the role of sulfur conversion in this process has not been fully explored. In this study, pyrite (FeS2)-based PMS activation process was developed for diethyl phthalate (DEP) degradation, and its underlying mechanisms were elucidated. PMS was found to be efficiently activated by FeS2 for DEP degradation and mineralization, achieving 58.9% total organic carbon removal using 0.5 g/L FeS2 and 2.0 mM PMS. Sulfides were the dominant electron donor for PMS activation, and mediated Fe(II) regeneration to activate PMS on the surface of FeS2 particles. Meanwhile, different sulfur conversion intermediates, such as S-5(2-), s(8)(0), S2O32-, and SO32-, were formed from the oxidation of sulfides by Fe(III) and PMS, and determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in-situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. SO32- was the dominant sulfur species responsible for sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) generation by activating PMS directly or activating Fe(III) to initiate a radical chain reaction, which was supported by the electron paramagnetic resonance results. This study highlights the important role of sulfur conversion in PMS activation by pyrite and provides new insights into the mechanism of oxidant activation by sulfur-containing minerals.
